Asian organization ONE FC returned this weekend with another solid show featuring a slew of regional talent and a handful of familiar faces in the form of ONE FC: Destiny of Warriors. The event, held in Kuala Lumpur, was headlined by Strikeforce/UFC veteran Renato Sobral returning to the ring for the first time since a 2010 loss to Dan Henderson in hopes of reminding the world why he was at one point considered to be Top 10 talent.
While “Babalu” still has a ways to go before reasserting himself as a true threat, the 36-year old still looked sharp en route to victory. Sobral only needed 31-seconds to dispatch of opponent Tatsuya Mizuno, latching on to an Armbar after his Japanese foe scored an early takedown. The victory improved Sobral’s overall record to 37-9 and was the nineteenth submission of his career.
Meanwhile, fan-favorite Roger Huerta was not as fortunate as Sobral in his respective rumble against late replacement Zorobabel Moreira. Huerta, who entered the fight having lost five of his last six outings after winning sixteen straight, was left in la-la land thanks to a brutal soccer kick in the third round of their bout. It was his third consecutive strike-based stumble, a fact made more concerning by the notion he had never lost by way of knockout prior to the slide.
