UFC 155: Dana White believes he made a mistake putting Chris Leben-Derek Brunson bout on pay-per-view
By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief
When Forrest Griffin was forced out of Saturday's UFC 155 event due to injury, the UFC pulled his scheduled opponent, Phil Davis, from the card. That left an opening on the pay-per-view portion of the event, one UFC President Dana White opted to give to a returning Chris Leben.
Even when Leben's originally scheduled opponent, Karlos Vemola, was pulled from the event and replaced on a week's notice by newcomer Derek Brunson, White kept that bout on pay-per-view. Come Saturday night, the fight itself was the worst of the night, and White said afterward that he made a mistake putting that fight on the main card.
"I love Chris Leben, personally and professionally," White said at the post-fight press conference (transcribed by MMAJunkie.com). "But tonight, I think I made a mistake putting him on the pay-per-view. I should have had him on the undercard. He's been off with personal problems for a while. He's had a lot of time off, and he looked slow tonight. I wasn't crazy about that fight. That wasn't my favorite fight of the night, that's for damn sure."
The Leben fight wasn't even the UFC's first choice to put on the main card, and it was White who made a change to put Leben there. He took responsibility for that after the event, and said he got some grief from UFC matchmaker Joe Silva for making the switch.
"There was another fight that was starting the show, and I switched it," White said. "Believe me, Joe Silva ran over and let me know he told me that. And he was right. Joe, you're smart, I'm dumb – I get it."
Despite the fact that he took the fight on a week's notice, Brunson received some of White's ire for part in the less than thrilling fight, and didn't make much of an impression in his UFC debut.
"The other kid was looking at the clock like he was a 14-year-old waiting for school to get out the entire fight – looking at the clock," White said. "You're in the UFC your first time, and I wasn't very impressed."
Penick's Analysis: Brunson certainly didn't have a great showing, but anyone overly criticizing him after that is being too harsh. He wasn't prepping for a fight on the card, and came into it on very short notice with a lot of weight to cut. He did as well as he could have in that scenario, and still won the fight. He'll have to hope he can make a better impression in his next showing, which is likely coming on Fuel TV at best.

Study: No Affiliation Is Third-Largest Religious Group Worldwide
This makes them the third-largest group worldwide, behind Christians who number nearly 2.2 billion (32 percent) and Muslims at 1.6 billion (23 percent). Their size is relative to those of Catholic faith.
The research is from a demographic study published on Dec. 18 of more than 230 countries and territories by the Pew Research Centers Forum on Religion & Public Life. The study is based on analysis of more than 2,500 censuses, surveys and population registers across the globe.
And those who identify with religious practices still make up the vast majority of the worlds population.
The study shows that the religiously-affiliated make up 84 percent of earths population, with 5.8 billion of the worlds 6.9 billion people associating themselves with a religion in 2010.
Following Christians and Muslims in size, there are nearly 1 billion Hindus (15 percent), almost 500 million Buddhists (7 percent) and 14 million Jews (0.2 percent). Additionally, more than 400 million people (6 percent) practice various folk or traditional religions, including African traditional religions, Chinese folk religions, Native American religions and Australian aboriginal religions.
But the religiously-unaffiliated are a rapidly growing group.
The religiously unaffiliated includes atheists, agnostics and others who do not identify with any particular religion in surveys. However, many of the religiously unaffiliated have some religious beliefs. For example, belief in God or a higher power is shared by 7 percent of Chinese unaffiliated adults, 30 percent of French unaffiliated adults and 68 percent of unaffiliated U.S. adults.
The religiously unaffiliated are heavily concentrated in Asia and the Pacific, where more than three-quarters (76 percent) of the worlds unaffiliated population resides.
There are six countries where the religiously unaffiliated compose a majority of the population: the Czech Republic (76 percent are religiously unaffiliated), North Korea (71 percent), Estonia (60 percent), Japan (57 percent), Hong Kong (56 percent) and China (52 percent).
This report estimates that 16.4 percent of the total U.S. population (adults and children) was unaffiliated as of 2010.
But a 2012 survey shows that number has increased to 19.6 percent of adult Americans reporting they are non-religious. The recent study also showed that one-fifth of the U.S. public and a third of adults under the age of 30 are religiously unaffiliated the highest percentages ever in Pew Research Center polling.

UFC 155's Junior dos Santos: "If I land 10 punches on Cain Velasquez, he's not going to stand back up"
By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief
Entering Saturday's UFC 155 event, UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos is feeling calm and confident about his rematch with Cain Velasquez. That said, he understands that Velasquez has a lot on the line in the fight, and he's not taking him lightly.
"I saw his interviews after our last fight, and I've seen his interviews recently," Dos Santos said in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. "I saw how upset he was to lose the title, and I know how badly he wants to get it back. You can see that very clearly in him."
He's not expecting this fight to end in a minute like the first bout did, but he still believes his skill set is more conducive to finishing the fight in Las Vegas.
"Cain Velasquez might be able to take me down," dos Santos said. "He might be able to take me down 10 times. But for each of those times he takes me down, I'm going to stand back up."
"If I land 10 punches on Cain Velasquez, he's not going to stand back up."
Penick's Analysis: This is one of the main keys to the fight on Saturday night. Dos Santos' striking game is superior to that of Velasquez, and he's shown an ability to avoid damage quite often in his career. Velasquez needs to get him down and keep him down, and that's something that may prove extremely difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish. If Velasquez can't accomplish that, then dos Santos just needs to score more often with his striking throughout the fight.

After UFC 155, Dana White says Michael Bisping definitely next Middleweight Title challenger if he beats Vitor Belfort
By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief
Heading into Saturday night's UFC 155 event, the UFC's middleweight division was starting to get a little cluttered with potential challengers. However, things cleared up considerably after the event, with two rising challengers suffering setbacks.
Alan Belcher's bid to break into the title conversation came to a screeching halt against the man who defeated him six years earlier in his UFC debut, Yushin Okami. The one-sided decision halted a four fight winning streak, and sent Belcher back to the middle of a crowded field.
Then Tim Boetsch had his own four fight winning streak snapped in the next fight, as a possible broken hand and a poke to the eye ultimately led to a loss against Costa Philippou.
Both of those results cleared a path for longtime UFC vet and Ultimate Fighter 3 winner Michael Bisping.
UFC President Dana White confirmed after the event that Bisping will be the next challenger to Anderson Silva's UFC Middleweight Championship, provided he defeats Vitor Belfort next month at UFC on FX 7 in Brazil. Bisping's got no obstacles left in his path, save Belfort, and is the one clear option if he wins that fight next month. Saturday's results just affirmed that status, and he's got just one thing left to do to get that elusive shot.
Penick's Analysis: Things cleared up greatly on Saturday for the next year, but it also created a new issue in the division. The next two challengers are almost assuredly going to be Bisping and Chris Weidman, as Weidman will just need one win to get the next shot after Bisping. But after that, where do they go? All of the rising challengers will have a recent loss, and though Philippou has won five straight fights, he's not necessarily an attractive option at the moment. And he could still lose between now and when he'd get a shot. There's a lot that's at play, but for now the one thing that is clear is Bisping's next in line. He just needs to beat Vitor Belfort.

Jim Miller - Ready to Face His Mirror Image
If you find yourself at the 21-4 fighter’s home, it’s a safe bet that whatever you see, eat, or touch has been a personal project of Miller’s. The food? He cooked it. The vegetables? From his garden. The bread? From his oven. The meat? Hunted it. The fish? Caught it. The beer? Home brewed. The wine? Home vinted. The chair you’re sitting on, he made it last year, but he put a fresh coat of stain on it yesterday because he had some free time. Everything from carpentry to automotive repair to anything else one can think up, Miller is ready and able to do it now or willing to learn and do it the first chance he gets.
Basically, Miller doesn’t always _____, but when he does, he prefers to do it himself.
“I try to do anything,” says Miller. “Whether it is working on my truck or cooking dinner. I'm trying to cook the best thing I can make. I'm trying to be better than average at everything. I don't think average is a good adjective to describe anything. I try to be good at everything I do and try to do everything as well.”
It is more than being a hobbyist for Miller because he is never satisfied with just doing it; he wants to be good at it. What originally drove Miller to take on new pursuits like welding were a natural curiosity and a desire for self-sufficiency. Now, the 29-year-old is a father of two and would like to pass down this legacy of practical knowledge and handiness, as well as inspire the same passion for learning that Miller clearly has.
“In all the things I do, the first and foremost is always a father,” tells Miller. “That's my main role on this Earth. I'm a father first, husband second, and everything else is coming after that. A lot of the things I do, I just like to learn. I like to try new things and like to figure things out. A lot of these things are things that I can teach my children. I can prepare them for anything. To have them not only go through life, but to thrive. My biggest goal is to make sure they're capable people.”
The goal to be versatile everywhere is no better illustrated than watching Miller fight. Inside the Octagon, Miller is an incredibly impressive 10-3 and, at one time, was riding a seven fight win streak in what many believe is the most talent rich division in the UFC. From Submission of the Night wins over Melvin Guillard and Charles Oliveira to vicious striking displays like the TKO of Kamal Shalorus to gritty grinding decisions against Mac Danzig and Matt Wiman, there isn’t a scrapping style or a facet of the fight where Miller isn’t dangerous. He’s the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt people don’t want to stand with, an aggressive Muay Thai striker people don’t want to take to the ground, and Miller grew up wrestling.
In essence, Miller is the epitome of a well-rounded cagefighter.
“I sure as hell try to be,” asserts Miller. “I like to learn new things outside and inside the gym. I'm just trying to build on the things that I have and be more dangerous. That's what is so great about this sport and what drew me to this sport, you're never done. You're never done learning. It's not just run, catch, throw. There is always more technique to learn. To get enough reps in to perfect even a dozen techniques is difficult to do in a career, so it's a matter of trying to get it all in. That's really what I enjoy. I love learning new techniques and I love playing around with them. I really want to be well-rounded and I'm never going to be satisfied. As much as I try and as much as I train in my life, the way I look at it, I'll never be as technical and as well-rounded as I would like to be.”
At the end of the day, a fight is a fight, and sometimes no matter how well prepared or ready to battle one is, the unpredictable can derail all that hard work. In his most recent Octagon outing, Miller took on The Ultimate Fighter season 5 winner Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC on FOX in Newark, New Jersey. In his first and only stoppage loss, Miller was tattooed by a two-pronged attack of a freak leg injury and a helluva good wallop from the top lightweight contender.
“Nate, you have to fight him solidly basically,” explains Miller. “You can't give him any opportunities to gain momentum. I thought I was doing a good job of that in the first part of the first round, but then a couple things went wrong for me. I tore a muscle in my lower calf and then as I came in on one of the exchanges he met me with a beautiful straight left hand that rang my bell. It had me seeing stars for quite a while after the fight as well. I tried to suck it up and tried to keep going in there and going after him. I felt like I didn't really recover between rounds and I think he noticed that and really put pressure on me in the second and got me in trouble.”
Certainly a disappointing outcome, but there is always something to gleam from each Octagon appearance. “I had a lot of time leading up to the fight and used my time better in the gym and broke it down a lot better than just going in there and getting the crap beat out of me for 12 weeks,” says Miller, who believes he was in his best shape cardio and fitness wise for the bout with Diaz. “That first round with Nate, I think that was the most energy I've used in a round of any fight and I felt fine between rounds and was barely breathing heavy, even though my nose was pushed around a little bit. We definitely prepared for that one pretty much perfectly if you asked me. I'm going to carry that over into my other fights and prepare more like a professional athlete and less like a tough guy going in there to fight.”
Up next for Miller, a tangle at UFC 155 with another lightweight sniffing around a title shot: Joe Lauzon. Originally, Lauzon was scheduled to fight Gray Maynard before a knee injury forced the former TUF housemate to withdraw. The 28-year-old with a professional record of 22-7, including a mind-boggling 11 UFC Fight Night bonuses, Lauzon is an equally distressing multi-dimensional threat of an opponent, with all of his wins coming by some form of finish. Lauzon likes to strike with crisp, clean boxing and follow his foe to the floor with slick submission wizardry, which should mean this bout will be an endless frenzied attack no matter where it goes.
“Coming off a loss, I wanted a big name and I wanted a tough fight,” reveals Miller. “I wanted a fight that would get me back at the top of the card in a tough fight to fight even better contenders. Joe has definitely solidified himself as one of the top lightweights, so it is an exciting fight for me. Joe is one hell of a fighter and I'm a big fan of watching his fights. I really like the way he approaches fighting, so it is really cool because I like to fight guys who I have this level of respect for. It's going to be a fun night.”
There are a lot of parallels between these fighters: dynamic striking and grappling, the majority of wins by submission, neither talks trash, a lot of mutual respect for each other, both entering the UFC cage for the 14th time, and so on. Even their own ground game (offensive, attacking) and those of their respective coaches (methodical, position oriented) are comparable. For Lauzon, the immovable object to his unstoppable force is Pedro Sauer black belt Ricky Lundell. For Miller and the rest of the AMA Fight Club in Whippany, New Jersey, the head BJJ instructor is Renzo Gracie black belt Jamie Cruz.
“I think Joe and I have a very similar style that works well for us,” affirms Miller. “It's a basic aggressiveness. My instructor Jamie, his style is more of a pressure and methodical type game, so I have that in there. It is something that I do revert back to and go to, but a lot of my style has been combating that, someone who is looking to pass and slowly hook your arm and then eventually take something. I have found the best way to go after that is to attack, attack, attack. It's cool to have both of those in my repertoire. To be able to do a tighter game and more technical game and then also have that scrambling ability. It is something that I try to use and bounce in between in a fight to catch people off guard.”
As far as standup, Miller works with two striking coaches in Nick Avalos and Muay Thai living legend Kaensak Sor Ploenjit. “My striking has evolved a lot, it's been evolving a lot,” says Miller, who has had notable striking performances like the one against Shalorus, but to Miller that was only the tip of the iceberg. “I'm actually pretty frustrated that I haven't been able to really show it off in the last couple fights. It's kind of like you're working on a technique and it's just not quite ready to throw out against one of the best in the world, so you kind of hold back on it. I love Muay Thai and the whole sport of it and it is actually something that I would love to do after my UFC career is over.”
Lastly, Miller can be found honing that never-ending gas tank for his trademark come forward and often fighting style with Martin Rooney at Training for Warriors. “In my opinion, he is one of the best if not the best strength and conditioning coaches in the business,” asserts Miller, who gives credit to where credit is due for the previously mentioned best shape he’s been in for the Diaz fight to Rooney. “He's coached world champions in just about every sport. He's trained guys for the NFL combine. He's a phenomenal coach and definitely knows what it takes to train at a world class level.”
On December 29th, lightweights will collide in a war on the feet and on the floor when Miller battles Lauzon. “I like butting heads with somebody,” affirms Miller, who is excited to throw every technique he’s learned at Lauzon, who will be looking to do the same in return. “I'm going in there to fight as hard as I can and leave it all in there. I expect if the fight goes the full 15 minutes then I'll be dead tired and I won't be able to stand up. If that's not the case then I'm not going to be happy about it.”
The only thing that would be more satisfying than defeating Lauzon inside the Octagon is if the UFC let Miller build it first before fighting in it. Maybe that's a project for next year.

Robbie Lawler returns to UFC, meets Josh Koscheck at UFC 157
Robbie Lawler will return to the UFC for the first time in more than eight years and gets a stiff test in his return in former welterweight title challenger Josh Koscheck.
Lawler (19-9 MMA, 4-3 UFC) also will return to 170 pounds for the fight with Koscheck (17-6 MMA, 15-6 UFC), which is set for UFC 157 in Anaheim, Calif. The Orange County Register first reported the booking, confirming the bout with UFC officials.
UFC 157 takes place Feb. 23 at Anaheim's Honda Center. The pay-per-view card will be headlined by the first women's bout in UFC history as bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey defends her belt against Liz Carmouche. A light heavyweight contenders fight between Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida and a bantamweight bout between Urijah Faber and Ivan Menjivar also have been announced for the show.
Lawler left the UFC following a submission loss to Evan Tanner at UFC 50. He went on to win middleweight titles for Icon Sport and EliteXC before moving to Strikeforce in 2009 after a nearly yearlong layoff following EliteXC's collapse.
In Strikeforce, Lawler's run was up and down. He went 3-5 in the promotion, dropping fights to Jake Shields, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Tim Kennedy and Lorenz Larkin.
But when he was on, he was ferocious. His three wins were brutal first-round knockouts of Melvin Manhoef, Matt Lindland and Adlan Amagov, the most recent coming this past January. But a July unanimous decision loss to Larkin gave Lawler three losses in his past four fights.
He'll look to rebound with the return to welterweight, where he fought for the first 10 bouts of his career, including a 4-1 start in the UFC that included a win over Chris Lytle. After a loss to Nick Diaz at UFC 47, he moved from welterweight tot middleweight for the fight with Tanner and, with the exception of a 182-pound catch weight fight against Shields, has fought at 185 pounds ever since.
Koscheck was scheduled to fight Jake Ellenberger this past September, but was forced out of the fight with a back injury. Now he returns looking to get back in the win column after a split-decision loss to current welterweight title contender Johny Hendricks in May at UFC on FOX 3.
Koscheck was on the shelf for nine months after a unanimous decision loss to champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 124 two years ago. But when he returned, he did so in a big way with a "Knockout of the Night" win over UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes at UFC 135.
After being booked for a fight with Carlos Condit at UFC 143, Koscheck instead fought Mike Pierce when Condit was moved into an interim welterweight title fight against Diaz. He beat Pierce by split decision and admitted to being uninspired with the matchup.
The loss to Hendricks was a contentious one. But Koscheck did what former teammate Jon Fitch and recent contender Martin Kampmann could not do against Hendricks by not only going the distance, but getting out of the first minute with him.
With the welterweight booking, the latest UFC 157 card now includes:
Ronda Rousey vs. Liz Carmouche - for women's bantamweight title
Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida
Urijah Faber vs. Ivan Menjivar
Lavar Johnson vs. Brendan Schaub
Josh Koscheck vs. Robbie Lawler*
Court McGee vs. Josh Neer*

Social Networking Can Lead to Divorce
Furthermore, according to statistical evidence from an association of lawyers in U.S.A., almost 80% of the evidence about partners is being gathered through these social networking sites which become the strength of various divorce cases.
The question over here is how to address this situation and what exactly makes social networking the prime cause of the increase in divorce rate these days? The answer to this question is varied. First of all, the too much sharing of information and privacy issues are the major cause of stressed relationships which eventually result in a divorce. The sharing of pictures, hidden conversation in the inbox that cannot be deleted now and a lot more has created havoc for millions of couples all around the globe.
Moreover, friend requests from ex-partners, continued discussions with other people and sticking all day long glued to the social networking sites have become a common issue for high divorce rate. It is truly said that these days, the news is no more created by the television or newspapers, but the social networking sites and that too, with a lot of sensation from the real life situations.
An interesting research shows that nowadays, the time people take to fall for each other is three times faster through social networking sites as compared to face to face discussions. And this holds true in case of the reason for high divorce rates and broken relationships through social networking sites too.
Thus, the presence of social networking media has become an over-whelming part of the lives of each one of us. In this digital age, when technology has taken over each one of us, it has also trapped us in many alarming risks and evils. It is now up to us that how smart we are with these social networking sites and how we manage our relationships with it. It is only through this balance that the divorce rate can be decreased.

Mike Goldberg out of announcing duties for UFC 155, Jon Anik joins Joe Rogan for the broadcast [UPDATED]
By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief
There will be a new pairing in the broadcast booth for the UFC on Saturday night, as longtime UFC broadcaster Mike Goldberg is out of the event. According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, FX/Fuel event play-by-play announcer Jon Anik will step in for Goldberg, with Joe Rogan remaining on color commentary for the night.
Though it was initially reported as an illness, UFC President Dana White said that Goldberg is actually taking time off from the UFC.
"He's taking time off and is not working this weekend," White said. "I don't know when he will be back."
Anik, the former host of MMA Live on ESPN2 and one-time play-by-play voice for Bellator Fighting Championships, was hired by the UFC last fall, and began his run with the UFC in January. He's done play-by-play for almost all of the UFC's events on FX and Fuel TV this year along with Kenny Florian, with Goldberg and Rogan remaining the broadcast team for pay-per-view and Fox events.
This will be Anik's first pay-per-view booking for the UFC, and the first time Anik and Rogan have worked together on a UFC broadcast.
Penick's Analysis: Many will be thrilled by this news, as Goldberg's never gotten the most fan support. For me, I'm excited to see how the Anik-Rogan pairing works. As ridiculous as Goldberg can be at times, he's a familiar voice, and there's a recognition and comfort in the broadcasts with him at the helm. But this could be a very beneficial replacement, and the Anik-Rogan team could work out quite well also.
-With the update on Goldberg's status, I sincerely hope that he is alright personally, and that there aren't any home issues at play, as "taking time off" could be for any number of reasons. And the cryptic status of not knowing when he's coming back is not a good sign.

Top 10 of 12: No. 5 GSP returns
MMA Payout’s No. 5 story of 2012 is the return of Georges St. Pierre. After an 18 month absence, GSP returned to the UFC and defeated Carlos Condit to unify the UFC welterweight title.
After receiving news of the PPV buys, Dana White indicated at the UFC on Fox 5 press conference that GSP “delivered” and that “the king of PPV” was back.
GSP broke a string of sub-500K buy PPVs in 2012. The much-anticipated Silva-Sonnen II was the only card that had more PPV buys (925K) this year.
Below is a list of GSP PPVs since 2010.
UFC 111 vs. Dan Hardy – 770K PPV Buys
UFC 124 vs. Josh Koscheck – 800K
UFC 129 vs. Jake Shields – 800K
UFC 154 vs. Condit – 680K
GSP draws consistent buys averaging over 750K buys. With him on the shelf for 18 months, it left the UFC without a known main eventer guaranteed to hit 750,000 PPV buys at least twice a year.
Despite a lower gate and attendance for UFC 154 than 124 (UFC 124 was in the same venue in Montreal) the PPV buys were in line with his usual buy rate. In 2013, GSP’s average is likely to increase considering a spring date to defend his title against Nick Diaz and the possibility of Anderson Silva later in the year.
Its also worth noting that GSP’s brand has been very successful despite the injury layoff. With the assistance of his marketing agents, he’s secured blue chip sponsors including Google, Coca Cola and Bacardi.

Leonard Garcia - Going Old School for UFC 155
“I am in a very good spot,” said Garcia. “I feel like I have pressure because I have to prove a lot. I have to prove to myself that I belong, I have to prove to the fans that I belong, and I have to prove to the UFC that I belong. And pressure is what I need.”
Some fighters are just like that, needing that proverbial back against the wall feeling to truly bring the best out of them. For Garcia, it was a feeling that listening to everybody else and not his own gut had taken away what always made him special. So in an effort to get better and show off different aspects of his game while letting fans know that he could be disciplined in the Octagon, he got civilized. And everyone knows that in the Octagon, Garcia is at his best in the midst of chaos, not a civilized mixed martial arts match.
“It took a lot of swallowing of my own pride to realize that the work that I was doing was good, and I was trying to learn different things and trying to turn different corners, but I was just trying to do that to be considered a smarter fighter, not just a brawler,” he explains. “But then I started to think ‘man, I used to nip on Cowboy (Cerrone)’s heels whenever we were training. I used to do these things and I used to challenge him and now I’m getting outclassed by these guys. My focus was on being competitive and not winning, and trying to be a smarter fighter, but not an effective fighter. That wasn’t my forte. My forte was to go into fights, get in there, grind it out, push the guy really, really hard, and get a victory. I started to think ‘man, how come my skill set keeps dropping?’ And the reason was, I would learn a move, and instead of going over it a hundred times like I’m supposed to, I would learn the move and try to make it seem like ‘okay, this is the technical way of doing it, and this is the way it should be done.’ But everybody knows me, man. I don’t do things the technical way. I make things look chaotic. If I’m going for an armbar, it looks like I’m going for a triangle or omoplata, and I end up getting an armbar. (Laughs) That’s just my way of doing things. I’m more reckless about it, and I really go in there and make my own way of doing stuff and it worked for me for all those years, and I tried to change it for the fans’ point of view.”
Since 2011, Garcia hasn’t entered the winners’ circle in the UFC, getting submitted by Chan Sung Jung in their rematch, losing a Fight of the Night decision in another rematch against Nam Phan, and then dropping a three round nod to Matt Grice. Each fight was competitive, but Garcia couldn’t get over the hump to get his hand raised. Along the way, as he promised a more disciplined and technical fighter, his longtime fans wondered where the old “Bad Boy” had gone.
“They were like, ‘We love you, man. What are you doing different?’ ‘Where’s the old Leonard? What’s going on?’ ‘Yeah, you’re getting these Fights of the Night, but you used to get in these situations and win. Where is that guy at?’” recalled Garcia of the reaction to his losing streak, which was mixed in with various injuries that kept him from fighting at the rate he wanted to.
“The training wasn’t doing what it was supposed to be doing,” he said. “I was trying to make something that I wasn’t. It was tough to deal with because I knew I was in there doing the right things. I was in there working, trying to figure things out, but I wasn’t making it my own stuff. And it took the three losses to make me see.”
Luckily, in this sport, three losses can be quickly erased by one win, at least from a mental standpoint, and even with a late change in opponent from Cody McKenzie to Holloway, it doesn’t matter to Garcia as long as he brings his old style back to the Octagon in order to fight his fight.
“I’m submitting guys again, I’m beating people up again, and I’m not missing six punches, I’m landing six of ‘em,” said Garcia of his prep work for the fight. “I haven’t been this excited for a fight in a long time.”
When you hear that from someone who will often break out with an ear to ear grin in the midst of a prize fight, that means something, and the 33-year-old hopes that while Saturday’s bout is the end of his 2012 campaign, maybe it’s going to be the start of something big for next year.
“I really want to come into my own this next year,” he said. “I’ve been working hard in the gym and I feel like this is something that needs to happen for me. It’s really important that I stay healthy and actually make a run. I need to bring the name Leonard Garcia back up to standard, and to do that I have to be active and fight at least four times a year. It took a lot of soul searching, and I feel like I’m back, and 2013 is gonna be my year, God willing.”

After A Few Detours, Derek Brunson Arrives in the UFC
But when that certain something is a call from the UFC to make your debut on this Saturday’s UFC 155 main card against one of the organization’s standout names in Chris Leben, it tends to improve your outlook a bit.
“Now it’s the greatest opportunity of my life, and that’s how I look at it right now,” said Brunson, a former Strikeforce standout who got the late notice call after Karlos Vemola was forced from the Leben bout due to injury. When that happened, Brunson’s manager didn’t get a ‘hey, would Derek like to fight Chris Leben?’ call a week ago. It was more to the point than that. It was ‘is Derek in shape?’
When the answer came back in the affirmative, he was offered Leben. Brunson didn’t hesitate to say yes.
“He (Leben) is definitely a name guy, I like the stylistic matchup, and I thought it was a good opportunity for me,” said the 28-year-old North Carolina native, who got a rousing response on social media outlets when he announced his signing.
“It’s been good,” he said. “Everybody’s been sending positive vibes and are real happy about the situation, and they’re glad I got my opportunity, as well as I am.”
All good things. So what’s the downside of getting one week to prepare for a fight?
“Exactly what you said – I’ve got a fight in a week,” laughs Brunson. “But if you can’t get up for the UFC, you can’t get up for nothing when it comes to the fight world. So I definitely look to that as my ultimate motivation and that’s gonna get me through the fight more so than anything. Obviously I didn’t have the longest training camp, but it’s a great opportunity and a lot of people would love to be in my spot. I’m definitely not looking to go out there and lay down. I’m going out there to win and do work.”
And if you’ve seen Brunson in action, you know that he can handle life in the UFC. A three-time Division II All-American wrestler for the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, he has long been one of Strikeforce’s rising stars, winning three of his four bouts in the promotion, but after a 9-0 start to his career, that pesky 2012 rolled around.
First, a scheduled March bout with former Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza was scrapped when Brunson wasn’t licensed due to his failure of an eye exam. Quickly undergoing PRK laser eye surgery, Brunson was back in the gym within six days, but as he waited for his next call from Strikeforce, he took a bout with UFC vet Kendall Grove on four days’ notice in June. What followed was his first pro loss, albeit one via highly controversial split decision.
Two months later, he got the Souza fight in Strikeforce, but he may have wished he didn’t, as he was knocked out in 41 seconds by the Brazilian standout. Now 9-2, things got even nuttier for Brunson when a spot on The Ultimate Fighter’s 17th season cast was yanked away due to a contractual issue. It kind of makes all that “worst year of my life” stuff all make sense.
“This past year was so rough, it was ridiculous,” he said. “It seemed like everything that I set up was just broken down and things didn’t go my way. But the UFC was my ultimate goal from the beginning, so it’s a fresh start for me.”
Sometimes, that’s all a fighter needs, even though it might be weird for someone who has been moving up the ranks the last couple years being put in the position of being the “new guy” simply because casual UFC fans may not have seen him before.
“It’s not weird,” Brunson counters. “Honestly, when I set my goals when I started doing MMA, this is definitely where I expected to be at. I actually had a chance early in my career to be in the UFC, I just needed a couple more fights, but Strikeforce came and offered me more fights at that time. This has definitely been my plan since Day One, and where I wanted to be, so I feel like it’s just the next step and I need to put on a good performance and get the job done this weekend.”
In a lot of ways, coming into a big fight like this on short notice is the best case scenario for Brunson, a fighter who wants to fight and stay active, and who doesn’t have two months to overanalyze his opponent and the idea of his Octagon debut.
“That’s definitely a positive,” he said. “I wasn’t too worried about the UFC jitters - I have an extensive college wrestling background, and I also fought in Strikeforce, which is a big stage, so I definitely wasn’t worried about the jitters thing so much. But two months to analyze and think about your opponent, ‘man, he’s really good here,’ or ‘he can really do this.’ Now it’s just kinda like okay, I know what he does, let’s go out there and do it and stop what he’s doing.”
And hey, debuting on the main card of one of the biggest shows of the year is a lot better than spending a season in the Ultimate Fighter house, right?
“Oh yeah, for sure,” laughs Brunson. “That would have been a grind. To be stuck in that house for close to seven weeks would have just been miserable.”
Who said things don’t happen for a reason?

Paul Daley pulled from Bellator MMA's season eight tourney after arrest on assault charges
By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief
Bellator MMA had hoped to kick off their first season on Spike TV by incorporating fans into their season eight welterweight tournament. Unfortunately, neither of the two fighters who received the most fan votes will competing in the field.
The fan vote would have put British welterweight Paul Daley against War Machine in the opening bout of Bellator's first Spike TV show, but an injury to War Machine put that on hold. Now, Daley has been pulled from the tournament as well.
According to a report from Josh Gross at ESPN.com, Daley's tumultuous MMA career hit another snag as he has been arrested on assault charges stemming from a bar fight. Per the report, he's been barred from entering the United States, and faces up to two years in prison with the charges.
It's another major setback for Daley, who was released from his UFC contract in 2010 after sucker punching opponent Josh Koscheck after the bell at UFC 113. However, despite the pending charges, Irish MMA site SevereMMA.com reports that Daley will return to action in Dublin at Cage Contenders 16 on February 23. No opponent is yet set, but his manager says they are looking at four former UFC vets for the fight.
