Rick Story: “It feels like I’m on the chopping block.”

It wasn’t long ago most people felt as though UFC welterweight Rick Story was on the cusp of challenging for the divisional title after stringing together six straight wins. Now, with back-to-back losses behind him, Story is in the unenviable position of potentially being cut from the roster if he suffers another stumble inside the Octagon.

Story faces Brock Jardine later tonight at UFC on FX 4 who he’s only had three weeks to prepare for after two previously scheduled foes were forced out due to injury. The 27-year old has no illusions about the situation he’s in, and though it’s possible he’ll hold on to his spot even with another defeat, Story is approaching the bout as though it could be his last in the UFC.

“It feels like I’m on the chopping block,” said Story in an interview with Sherdog Radio. “But I felt that way in my last fight. Anytime I go into a fight, I want to win. When I lose, I’m probably the one that beats myself up the most. It just motivates me more to work hard in my next training camp, but I can’t sit on the past. I’ve just got to let that motivate me to do better in the future. That’s what I’ve done so far. I’m looking forward to this fight to get me going in the right direction again and come out with a win.”

A Detailed Look at Story’s Decision Loss to Martin Kampmann

Jardine is a newcomer with a 9-1 record and a trio of consecutive victories to his credit. While Story admitted the only video he’s found of his adversary came by way of YouTube, it doesn’t appear as though he’s fazed by what Jardine has to offer any more than he would be by any opponent.

“I’m sticking to my game plan and imposing my will rather than reacting to what everyone else is doing,” explained Story of his strategy against Jardine.

Fans can catch Jardine-Story fight on the Fuel TV portion of the evening’s prelims (scheduled to start at 6:00 PM EST).

Five Finger Death Punch to Perform During International Fight Week

Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino will celebrate the July 4th holiday as well as another spectacular UFC event weekend in Las Vegas when it kicks off Metal Hammer’s Trespass America Festival with a Five Finger Death Punch hometown concert on the Mandalay Bay Beach stage Friday, July 6 at 9 p.m. Tickets priced at $25, not including applicable service charges, are now on sale. Five Finger Death Punch, the heavy metal band hailing from Las Vegas, features Ivan Moody (vocals), Zoltan Bathory (guitar), Jason Hook (guitar), Jeremy Spencer (drums) and Chris Kael (bass). The group released its third album, American Capitalist, in November 2011 and has morphed into the melodic heavy metal machine that they’ve been moving towards since the 2007 debut of The Way of the Fist. The band’s fans’ not only believe the sound is bigger, but better, and the music has become more intricate and infectious.

Since its formation in 2006, Five Finger Death Punch continues to progress in the face of all odds and opposition.  The Way of The Fist, the band’s first album, and 2009’s War is the Answer (second album) have both surpassed gold certification status. The two albums have spawned a combined nine consecutive Top 10 singles at Active Rock Radio with “Bad Company” peaking at No. 1 and “Far From Home” reaching No. 2.  Additional tracks have appeared on NBC’s “Criminal Minds” and on the video game “Madden 2012.”

Georges St-Pierre says his “right knee is super strong”

Returning UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre has been actively updating fans on his condition since going under the knife in December to repair a completely torn ACL, even occasionally providing video of the rehabilitation process. While no images were included with his last bit of new of the matter, none were needed to convey the joyous information as it appears GSP has gotten over the hump and is back to working full speed in the gym.

“I’m back in Montreal and full-time training! Already tried a few kicks – right knee is super strong,” Tweeted the 31-year old title-holder.

“Rush” Honing His Skills in New Venue While Sidelined with Injury

St-Pierre’s news seems to indicate he will be ready to fight Carlos Condit in November as had been hoped for. Condit currently holds the division’s interim belt, winning the strap in a clash with Nick Diaz this past February.

bibiano not going out like no punk

Quote:

Owner of two belts of the extinct Dream, in Japan, Bibiano Fernandes wants other title in Asia. The Brazilians is one of the new hires at One FC, event that came up with the intention of waking up the Asian market, and the fighter wants to be a part of it.

“It’s an event that needs to be watched, needs to grow too because that way the competition comes. UFC’s going to win it all. There’s no competition, none whatsoever”, said Bibiano, on an exclusive interview with TATAME. “I guess it’ll grow, I’m sure of that”.

The Jiu-Jitsu black belt is focusing on conquering his fourth MMA title, but still has no opponent set for his debut, scheduled for August 31st. “Oh man, I’ve fought the toughest guys from both feather and bantamweights. I’ll welcome whoever they ask me to fight against. Let’s go to war”, warns.

Red below the complete interview, on which the athlete explains all the confusion about a possible hiring by the UFC.

What are the expectations for your One FC debut?

I’ve fought all my life in Japan. Most of my fans live there. I guess One FC is just an extension of Dream. It’s not Dream, but the guys there have been helping one another at One FC. If you really look at it, you’ll see the guys that used to work on Dream here.

Do you think they learned their lessons and now their gathered to do it right this time at One FC?

One FC is One FC. They hired the good employees from Dream. They picked some people up and brought into their organization. I guess it’s gonna grow. Actually, I’m pretty sure of it. I believe in them.

They releases the date you will debut but not who your opponent is. Do you know his name already?

Oh man, I’ve fought the toughest guys from both feather and bantamweights. I’ll welcome whoever they ask me to fight against. Let’s go to war.

How’s their broadcasting system?

All I know it’s on ESPN Asia. When I finish my fight at the 31st, I’ll call you and tell you what my impressions of the event are (laughs).

Do you think One FC will be a huge success in the Asian market?

It’s an event that needs to be watched, needs to grow too because that way the competition comes. UFC’s going to win it all. There’s no competition, none whatsoever. Even at my weight class, and I hope they hire good fighters in other classes too, but in all light divisions so things are balanced.

There was a surprise when UFC announced you signed in for the Canada event but days latter it was announced they let you go. Days later you said you didn’t even sign that same contract. What really happened?

Apart from family, it’d be a great opportunity for Bibiano, but when you put the family in the picture it’s not worth it. I don’t fight for me. I have people who rely on me. I’ve built what I had to build in MMA. It can be many people’s dream to fight in the UFC, but it ain’t mine. It’s all business to me. I’ve dreamed about being a champion, I earned three belts: one in Canada and two in Japan. If you have a dream, keep dreaming. If you want to fight, keep on trying. But this I’ll tell you: worship yourself otherwise nobody else will. And it’s not only on the fighting business, but in everything in life. People use you, use you, use you and them through you away like garbage.

MMA is getting big in Brazil. Do you want to fight here?

I dream on fighting in Brazil, of course. I want that. I’m an athlete and I like to compete. If it was at my hometown, Manaus, it would be even better. Fighting in front of my family and friends would be amazing but maybe in the future. We carry on and follow God’s plan.

This is a business, and bibiano knows how to make good business decisions that suits him and his family.

if he fights in ufc he does, if he doesnt then he doesn't, thats the way it should go if you look at this as a business and not a sport.

Rematch between Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen getting UFC Primetime treatment

For a bout as widely anticipated as next weekend’s rematch between UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva and arch-nemesis Chael Sonnen it seems logical to amp up the promotion in comparison to the standard fare. While the UFC wasn’t able to coordinate a complete UFC Primetime series to document the build up towards their headlining bout at UFC 148, it appears the organization will at least release a single installment highlighting the weeks leading up to the year’s biggest fight.

The show premieres tomorrow night (June 30) at 7:00 PM EST on Fuel TV. The episode will also be available on the UFC’s website for those who aren’t fortunate enough to have Fuel TV.

Rick Story glad for UFC on FX 4 win, but still critical of own performance

Rick Story got back to his winning ways with a lopsided victory over Brock Jardine at UFC on FX 4 this past Friday.

But even after his dominant decision, the 27-year-old Story left Atlantic City, N.J., wanting more.

"I hold myself to high standards," Story recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio. "I'd rate it about (A-minus, B-plus). I don't want to fall in the category of one of those guys that just ride out wins."

Ultimate Fighting Champion

After watching a UFC fight, you might be interested in working your way to become a fighter in the ring. What preparations can you do in order to make it in Mixed Martial Arts training? Are you interested in becoming the next ultimate fighting champion? What are the essential elements that you need to know and understand to become successful in this sport? Where do I get those cool mma clothing and gear used by fighters? These are just some of the questions you might be asking. But aside from this, you also need to ask yourself a few questions before plunging in. Are you up to the challenge of undergoing gruelling training for MMA? Are you psychologically and physically fit to do the exercises involved in the training? Do you want to train to stay physically fit or you want to know the techniques because you want to be a fighter? Knowing your goals will eventually help you in deciding the kind of training you wish to get. This also makes it easy for you to choose the gym you want to join.

dude wheres my car

first i put down 100 bucks on chael sonnen on an online betting website because im feeling the luck. but anyways ithen i got bored and needed something to do, so i, drove to vancouver for no apparent reason. that was all good, but on the way back i stopped and wandered into the bush to rock a piss and had a close encounter with an adult brown bear. yeah that mother****er damn near made me piss myself prematurely. im not kidding that thing was huge and scared the **** out of me

i guess somehow it noticed me before i noticed it, it noticed me and for some reason it fled. though i dont believe it was anywhere near as scared of me as i was of it. anyways i pissed out some of the beer on me and headed on my way . popped my rear tire in osoyoos which is basically the border town between canada and the USA and im thinking oh great. now im drunk as **** and im thinking about calling triple a so they can **** me in the *** for the cost of a new tire?

oh hell no. i balls'd up and drove from osoyoos to penticton with a flat left rear tire. a few people went past me along the way on the highway but nobody even honked...which is good because im not stupid. i know damn well im pretty much rolling on rim. there is no need to be an ******* driver and honk the horn to remind me of what i am already damn well aware of. thank you very much

i know a friend there and i parked my **** at his house and got him to drive me the rest of the way home. i i dont even have a spare tire and i dont think im gonna make it for work today. im drunk as **** and dont even know what kind of condition my car is in but somehow the tire stayed on the rim when i left it there so im happy about that. its that ****ing bear that ive still got the jitters about. i pulled over along the side of the road and went to take a piss was spitting distance away from a huge *** bear before we noticed each other and for some reason it got more spooked and ran into the bush. i dont think my day could get any more ****ed up at this point i just thought id share.

yeah i am damn well drunk right now too. im gonna wake up tomorrow and be like dude wheres my car? yeah. what a ****ed up day for me over here. i dont see what else can go wrong. im never leaving my house on a day off again. my car is sitting in penticton and im so drunk as **** im trying to make a note to myself so that when i wake up o can figure this **** out. only problem is once i remember ive got a flat im gonna be pretty pissed off. for now ill just stay drunk and hungry

yeah i had to post this here. more of a reminder to myself when i get back to this thread in the morningg im gonna be pretty spaced out in the morning wondering what the **** happened. and unless somebody feels like donating me a tire and possibly a rim as well then im probably going to end up being pretty pissed off once i figure this all out. i try to hve a nice relaxing day away from the world and this is what happens

Ronda Rousey vs. Sarah Kaufman official for August 18 Strikeforce headliner in San Diego; tickets on sale this week

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Ronda_Rousey_180_8.jpg
Ronda Rousey's first defense of her Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Championship will indeed take place on August 18, as Strikeforce officials announced this week that the fight will headline a card at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, Calif. on that date.

"We're excited to head back to the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego with the first title defense of bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, arguably the best female fighter in the sport today," Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said. "She's submitted all of her opponents thus far, but number one contender Sarah Kaufman has the experience and tenacity to push her like no one else. This is a great title fight for Strikeforce fans and we look forward to another tremendous night of fights in San Diego!"

Rousey comes into the event with an undefeated record, which was extended in March when she nearly tore former Champ Miesha Tate's arm apart with an armbar, finally forcing her to submit. All of her career wins have come by armbar.

Kaufman, the division's former Champion, earned her way back into a title fight with a decision win over Alexis Davis on that same card in March. The win was her third straight win since losing her title to Marloes Coenen back in October of 2010.

Tickets for the event go on sale this week. UFC Fight Club members have their first crack at tickets today, June 27, beginning at 10AM PT. UFC and Strikeforce Newsletter subscribers will have a presale tomorrow, June 28, and tickets will open up to the public on Friday, June 29. Prices range from $45 to $150.

Poll states NY voters unaware of MMA legislation

A poll indicates 52% of registered New York voters have heard nothing about the legalization of mixed martial arts in New York.  The latest Siena College Research Institute poll asked 766 New York registered voters about a variety of topics including the legalization of MMA in the state.

The following are the results:

766 New York registered voters
Margin of Error +/- 3.5

52% – Heard nothing at all about legalizing MMA in NY.  This response stems from the question:  Legalizing mixed martial arts  - or MMA – in New York State. How much have you heard or read about it – a great deal, some, not very much, nothing at all. The rest of the results are as follows:

8% responded with “a great deal”
17% some
22% not very much
52% nothing at all
1% don’t know/no opinion

On legalizing MMA in the state:
32% – Support
26% – Oppose
38% – Don’t have enough information
4% – No opinion

Among other things the poll asked New York voters included legalizing medical marijuana and raising the minimum wage.

Payout Perspective:

The polling information is a little dated so we apologize but we thought it would be interesting.

Fight Opinion has an extensive analysis and opinion on the results of the latest poll including a comparison as to the results from an April 2012 poll which had 52% of the respondents siding with opponents of MMA.  Zach Arnold points to the wording of the question which may have caused the disparity in results.  As Arnold notes with the results of the latest poll conducted in May 2012, despite the lobbying efforts, economic studies and public relations, the message is still not making it through to the bulk of New York voters according to the poll. While one might argue that the sample size is relatively small, it still may reflect the voting public.  Thus, it seems that either most New Yorkers aren’t aware of the sport of MMA, that its not legal within the state or just don’t care.

WWE RAW Backstage Fallout: Jack Loses Swagger, Ziggler and Del Rio Drop Comedy Anvils On Each Other

Jack Swagger is in a bad place: the former World Heavyweight Champion took a Cobra for a loss against Santino Marella in a quick U.S. Title match on RAW, a week after losing the managerial services of Vickie Guerrero. Despite having the best organized hair in wrestling, Jack’s chakras are all out of whack, as you can see on RAW Backstage Fallout this week. Losing streak storylines are the opposite of helpful to getting guys over, yet it’s a well WWE keeps going back to that well for guys who are just important enough that they’d be missed if they disappeared altogether. It was rough enough to go through that roller coaster when I was a big Shelton Benjamin fan and I don’t look forward to it again with Swagger.

WWE stuck two of their best in-ring performers, Dolph Ziggler and Alberto Del Rio, in a Thing On A Pole match to challenge for Sheamus‘s World Heavyweight Championship Friday on Smackdown. Matches with things on poles are reliable trainwrecks pretty much no matter who’s in them: a lot of yanking and slapfights in the corner and everyone sells having trouble with climbing and standing up. This one turned slapstick pretty fast after Ziggs grabbed and dropped the contract, leading to the two of them groping after the clipboard like Velma looking for her glasses on Scooby-Doo as Michael Cole did his best to make some nonsense up about how you have to control it! no one controlled it!

This was better than I’m making it sound, as it involved two wildly expressive personalities (four if you count Guerrero and Ricardo Rodriguez at ringside) flinging themselves across the ring for our amusement in what looked like a really animated game of catch. Cartoon-wise it was actually more Looney Tunes than Scooby-Doo. If you get a kick out of Daffy Duck having to set his face right after his beak explodes to the wrong side of his head, you probably liked this match. Ziggler is Daffy Duck in that analogy, FYI.

Eventually Sheamus appeared to say eh f*ck it and invite them both for a triple threat match. Everyone seemed pretty content with this, and the contract got left sitting there for the crew to pick up because Sheamus made them forget to try to win at stuff.

Dolphus and ADR with Rodriguez in tow gave their $.02 on their upcoming triple threat match. Del Rio abuses Rodriguez as per usual. Ziggler remains WWE’s most lovable, fastest-talking narcissist. Check it all out below:

Silva and Sonnen made comic book characters

The UFC is pulling out all of the stops to ensure that UFC 148 is a success including a comic book strip depicting Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen.  The comic depictions appear on the UFC’s Facebook page and will be updated daily to promote July 7th’s showdown.

Via UFC press release:

Reigning UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and bitter rival and No1 contender Chael Sonnen have long been known as two of the most colorful characters in the Ultimate Fighting Championship® organization. But that has been taken to a whole new level in a special comic strip which will countdown to the UFC 148 main event between the two bitter rivals.

Each day another page of the strip will be published on the UFC’s Facebook page, Facebook.com/UFC leading to the biggest fight of the summer at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, on July 7.

The strip has been drawn by British artist Dave Golding, 37, a professional comic book artist since 2006. Golding was the original artist for the critically acclaimed Dare graphic novel ‘The Hunter’, which has recently been optioned by Hollywood, and his work has been featured throughout the medium as well as on designs for various science-fiction shows for British television.

The strip – which launched on Sunday on Facebook – will tell the story of this almost-inevitable rematch of the 2010 fight of the year, and is peppered with in-jokes long-time UFC fans will appreciate.

Golding has also re-imagined Silva – a lifelong comic book fan – and Sonnen as costumed heroes for two special faux comic book covers. Silva dons the tights as ‘the Silver Spider’ and wears an outfit featuring the colors of his beloved Brazil’s national flag. Sonnen, meanwhile, is taken at his word and has been transformed into the ‘American Gangsta’, and given a patriotic Old Glory color scheme.

Silva said: “I’ve always been a comic book fan since I was young. I liked heroes who had everyday problems but still tried to help people.”

Sonnen said: “What a thrill, to see myself in comic book form. Never before has a real life super-hero been turned into a mortal in a comic book, you will never see this in your lives again.”

Payout Perspective:

This is a unique way to promote this match and great tie-in to utilize social media via its Facebook page with a new comic each day.  The obvious inference made by the comic strip depictions are that Silva and Sonnen are superheros on a collision course of enormous importance.  It’s a reason for fans to keep returning to the UFC page and a constant reminder for fans to order the PPV July 7th.

Brian Choi Looking to Make the Most of Unexpected Opportunity at ONE FC: Destiny of Warriors

Brian Choi’s long awaited ONE FC debut will arrive sooner than expected on Saturday night when he steps up to take on Arnaud Lepont at the sold out Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur. He was in preparation to fight on the Manila card when his Evolve MMA team mate Eddie Ng suffered a shoulder injury in training and the call came in,

“As soon as Eddie got injured they were looking for a replacement and One FC asked me and my coaches thought it would be a good fight so right away I just accepted,” explained Choi in a conversation with Fighters.com. “I was in pretty good shape at the time because I was preparing to fight on the next One FC card in Manila so I was training hard and I was lifting weights and doing normal stuff as if I had a fight.”

As well as having to accelerate his training schedule Choi, whose record currently stands at 3-1, was also required to move up in weight to face the French fighter. It is not a move he plans to make permanently but the Korean has no problem with fighting at 155 pounds.

“Not cutting weight is good but I am more comfortable at featherweight because I’m short. I am more suited to 145 but if I have a chance to fight at 155 I can do that. I have fought different weight classes my entire career it doesn’t matter,” said Choi.

His last fight was for Road FC in December where he suffered a disappointing decision loss to outstanding Korean featherweight Bae Young Kwon. Choi has been desperate to get back into the cage ever since and is delighted that this unexpected opportunity has arisen, stating, “I’m just happy I can fight because my last fight was in December which is a long time ago so I am happy to fight and to have this chance. It’s every fighters dream to fight on a big show like ONE FC and I am beyond excited, I cannot even explain.”

Fighting at an unfamiliar weight class against a more experienced opponent with only a few weeks to prepare makes Choi the underdog in most people’s eyes but it is a situation he is used to.

“When I fight I am almost always the underdog, I just want to go in the cage and do my job. I don’t care what other people think. I know I have the best training partners in the world at Evolve MMA and I am prepared for anything my opponent might do.”

Lepont is 8-1 and riding a five fight win streak. He has never been to a decision and is renowned for his heavy hands but Choi does not believe that his power will pose him too many problems, admitting, “I don’t watch my opponent’s fight but all my team mates watch them and Heath (Sims) and Chatri (Sityodtong) watched his fights and they gave me the strategy, round by round, so I could prepare what was coming. When I spar with somebody they advise him how to be like Arnaud so whatever he does I will be used to it.”

The French fighter lives and trains in Kuala Lumpur and will probably be the fan favorite but the prospect of having an entire stadium against him does not phase Choi.

“I’m only focused on the fight so when I go inside the cage I don’t care about the crowd I only listen to my coaches, I probably won’t even see how many people are there. If he has a lot of supporters that is good for him but it won’t affect me, the only people I will be listening to are my coaches.”

Since the loss to Kwon one significant difference to Choi’s training routine has been the arrival at Evolve MMA of Dan Henderson’s long term trainer Sims. The former US Olympian wrestler has been working intensively with the fight team and Choi feels he has become a completely different fighter as a result, saying, “As soon as Heath arrived he started giving us a lot of advice and for me my game has been changed and I am on a completely different level since Heath started teaching, he has made a huge difference.”

Sims was the latest addition to a team of trainers which is already recognized as the most decorated in the world and Choi has been preparing at Evolve MMA along with four other fighters doing battle on June 23 including ONE FC’s Zorobabel Moreira, Leandro Issa and Mitch Chilson, as well as the UFC’s Rich Franklin.

He believes that this preparation could make all the difference in this coming contest and believes that he is capable of scoring a surprise KO victory.

“I work every day on my Muay Thai with Kongtranee Payakron, he was Lumpinee Champion at five different weights and he has very fast hands so whenever we do the padwork he uses his speed and I get used to getting hit and he understands MMA and he touches my knee so it is like a takedown and I sprawl.”

Choi has also been getting some high caliber help from another Thai and is confident that come fight night he will be ready for whatever his French opponent can throw at him, adding, “My sparring partner was former WBA Champion Yodsanan Sityodtong. He has more power than Arnaud and I can take a couple of hits from him so I am not too worries about his punching. I don’t want to go to a decision, this time I want to finish the fight as soon as possible. I am training for that.”

MMA fans from around the world can witness the action of ONE Fighting Championship: Destiny of Warriors online via live streaming on www.onefc.com. The first four under card fights are available for viewing free of charge. The remaining six main card fights are now available for purchase on Pay-Per-View at just $9.99. Actress Charlize Theron wonders what her love of the UFC says about her

Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron was out promoting "Prometheus" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" when she took a chance to discuss her love for the UFC. She told Conan O'Brien that a friend introduced her to fights and she hasn't looked back.

"I wonder what it says about me that I like sweaty, hot men bleeding all over each other and bashing each other in the face, but I can live with that," Theron said.

Oh, Charlize. You're not truly an MMA fan until you have that conversation with yourself. Welcome to the fold.

Thanks, Bloody Elbow.

Top Quality MMA Gear

There are many reasons why you would need to step back and take a look at the extensive line of mma clothing and gear available before making any decisions on which to purchase. It’s not just a matter of picking the first pair of gloves you see or that shiny red pair of fight shorts hanging in the rack. You need to take a look at your needs and how a particular brand will hold up to your expectations. Because of the extensive line of products coming out in the market almost every week, it is important to give it a lot of thought first. MMA is an extreme sport and everybody knows why it’s important to get durable gear that you will use in training. You need to invest if you want the top quality gear, but if you’re on a budget you can still find reasonable brands. Ask your coach or an MMA store clerk because they can make recommendations depending on your needs and your budget as well.

AMADI: UFC's low TV numbers in 2012 due to Friday nights, not declining interest in the product

By: Jason Amadi, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Staff10Amadi_130_62.jpg
Following the first season of the Ultimate Fighter in 2005, the UFC saw an incredible period of exponential growth in North America. There were some low pay-per-view buys and some low television ratings along the way, but generally speaking everything from 2005 to 2010 trended upward for the UFC. Especially on pay-per-view, where they were able to set records year after year.

Unfortunately, as a result of injury, illness, new faces, and new champions, the UFC's unprecedented pay-per-view run ended in 2011. Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre were able to bring in big numbers at the beginning of the year, and Brock Lesnar and Jon Jones were able to close the year with a bang, but almost everything else tanked.

The more pay-per-views underperformed last year, the more people kicked around the idea that the UFC's popularity had begun to plateau in North America. Looking purely at the numbers, it certainly looked that way. Back when the UFC was on a steady rise, it was easy to forget what a star driven industry mixed martial arts truly was. It was easy to attribute their pay-per-view success to the strength of the UFC brand and not the name value that their top guys had worked the better part of a decade to achieve.

We're halfway through 2012, and it's fairly safe to say that the UFC's pay-per-view business is trending upwards once again. The first five UFC pay-per-view offerings this year featured title fights involving guys who headlined shows in 2011. Each fighter did a superior number this year than they did last year; in four of the five cases, markedly so.

Jose Aldo co-headlined two events last year, but his solo effort in 2012 brought in an estimated 235,000 buys; that's 10,000 more buys than UFC 136 did last October.

Nick Diaz took on B.J. Penn late last year at UFC 137 and headlined his very first UFC pay-per-view. That show did an estimated 280,000 buys. This year, Diaz was able to draw an estimated 400,000 buys at UFC 143 against Carlos Condit, an opponent who also had never headlined a UFC pay-per-view before.

UFC 144 featured a lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and Benson Henderson. The two lightweight title fights in 2011 drew two of the worst buyrates of the year. Last year, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard headlined UFC 125 which drew an estimated 270,000 buys and UFC 136 which drew an estimated 225,000 buys. The Edgar-Henderson title fight from earlier this year did an estimated 375,000 buys.

Jon Jones fought on four UFC pay-per-views last year and headlined three of them in title fights. Jones put up some of the better numbers in 2011 and was able to do his best buyrate to date against Rashad Evans this year. UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans drew an estimated 700,000 pay-per-view buys.

Junior dos Santos headlined his first UFC pay-per-view ever against Shane Carwin last year at UFC 131 and drew an estimated 325,000 buys. This year, dos Santos drew an estimated 560,000 buys against Frank Mir.

Despite the death of the UFC's pay-per-view business evidently having been greatly exaggerated, the idea of the UFC's popularity having plateaued in North America remains pervasive. Some would suggest that the idea remains pervasive because of low television ratings on FX and a poor outing on Fox this past May, but I believe it's simply a result of the MMA community's refusal to adopt new metrics for success.

The UFC is no longer on Spike TV. Looking at a lot of the numbers the UFC is pulling on FX, perhaps they should be, but they aren't. There is no way to spin the fact the UFC has done significantly lower numbers for UFC on FX cards than they were for "UFC Fight Night" cards on Spike TV. There is also no way to spin the fact the Ultimate Fighter, Ultimate Fighter Finale card and UFC Primetime episodes are also well short of where they were just a few months ago on Spike TV.

However, to suggest that this is indicative of a decline in interest of the UFC product isn't really fair or rational. After all, pay-per-view is recovering from where it was last year and UFC pay-per-view prelims on FX are still on par with what the UFC was drawing on Spike.

The fact is, Friday night can be a pretty bad night for television viewership in general, but it's far and away the worst possible night for mixed martial arts programming.

It's really all in the numbers. The TUF 10 finale did an average 2.6 million viewers in Spike TV. The TUF 11 finale averaged 2 million viewers but peaked at 2.4 million. The TUF 12 finale averaged 2 million viewers and peaked at 2.3 million viewers. TUF 13 was the weird Brock Lesnar-Junior dos Santos season that aired on Wednesdays at an earlier timeslot, so the Finale number dipped to a 1.8 million viewer average. However, TUF 14 rebounded and did a 2.5 million average with a muscular 3.4 million viewer peak.

The TUF 15 finale drew a comparatively low one million viewers. The 15th season of the Ultimate Fighter in general was bottom of the barrel as far as the franchise goes. In fact, all of the UFC's Friday night content has been substantially lower than what they were doing last year.

Looking at the numbers, it's not hard to see what's changed. I suppose you form some convoluted theory based around "over saturation," but Occam's razor suggests that Friday nights are simply a terrible night for MMA.

Going forward, when looking at the UFC's numbers we all have to adopt new metrics for success; things are simply radically different than they were a year ago.

The UFC answers to different masters and is constantly expanding into new markets, most notably Brazil. The UFC has put on three cards there in the last year and none of them have been especially successful domestically. However, tens of millions of Brazilians have watched these events on television.

How do you measure success in that situation? If the UFC breaks even or better on the event in terms of pay-per-view and continues to put up big numbers internationally, can we really call that a failure?

Some just want to make definitive statements about the UFC's decline and they'll likely dismiss the Friday night timeslot woes and their international expansion as "excuses" and that's fine; and to an extent they aren't really wrong. However, for the rational, it's important to recognize that the UFC is swimming in much deeper waters this year than ever before. To be honest, they don't seem to be in danger of drowning any time soon.

Clay Guida says tenacity will be difference in key fight with Gray Maynard

The similarities between Clay Guida and Gray Maynard are striking: Each are elite wrestlers whose striking has come a long way. Each is coming off a loss to a lightweight champion, Guida to Benson Henderson and Maynard to Frankie Edgar. And each man believes he's destined to regain the belt.

The one difference, though, that Guida believes will carry him to victory over Maynard in their five-round lightweight fight Friday in Atlantic City, N.J., is his tenacity.

"Without a doubt, I think that's going to be in my favor," Guida told Cagewriter. "I've been in fights where I've been down and come back. I am never, ever, going to quit or concede in a fight and I think that's a major advantage for me."

Guida's movement and tenacity are two of his trademarks, but he's also at least as well known for his wild, flowing hairstyle. Maynard's new coaches at the American Kickboxing Academy, but not Maynard himself, complained to the New Jersey commission about it.

Guida agreed to put his hair in cornrows to end any controversy before it began and laughed it off as a non-issue.

"I'm not sure what they were trying to do by complaining about that, but whatever it was, it didn't work," Guida said. "I'm here to fight and not talk about my hair."

Guida knows a win over Maynard, who had a draw and a knockout loss to Edgar in back-to-back title fights last year, will go a long way toward getting him his coveted first title shot.

The UFC has promised Nate Diaz a championship shot against the winner of the rematch between Henderson and Edgar at UFC 150, but Guida told Sherdog Radio he believes an impressive win over Maynard could force the UFC brass to rethink its plans.

If I go out there and beat the brakes off of him and really put it on him, I think the UFC is going to have a hard time denying us. I know Nate Diaz is right up there. Yeah, he won three in a row, but look, Gray won six or seven in a row. He hadn't lost for how many years? … [And] I went on a decent little run there. I won four over a couple of tough guys, former world champs, [Takanori] Gomi in Pride and [Anthony] Pettis in the WEC, and I lost a very, very close fight to Ben Henderson. So it's one of those, it all depends on the way of victory.

The five-round fight figures to work to Guida's advantage. One of the reasons for his popularity is his ability to fight at a frenetic pace pretty much all of the time. The pace often slows in the latter stages of a long fight, but Guida insists that will never happen to him.

He said he's better conditioned now, at 30 years old, than he's ever been.

"Five rounds is tailor-made for me," he said. "When I'm done with three rounds, really, I'm just getting loose and ready to go. I go through a grind every day to get to where I am and you haven't seen anything from me in terms of pace and stamina. The longer this fight goes, people are going to be shocked at the way I can go.

"It's a mindset. I refuse to be tired and I have always vowed to work harder than my opponents. I put myself in the worst possible situations in training and I go and go and go. It makes the fight seem easy by comparison."

Forrest Griffin: “I want to fight on my own terms.”

This Sunday Forrest Griffin will celebrate his 33rd birthday. The following Saturday night he’ll face legendary light heavyweight Tito Ortiz in co-headlining action at UFC 148 where the two will complete a trilogy featuring a pair of opposing Split Decisions. Perhaps it’s the fact Ortiz is retiring after the bout or the annual reminder of mortality but the situation in general has Griffin thinking about his future.

The affable Ultimate Fighter OG recently reflected on what tomorrow may bring in his career, showing a stark sincerity where his limited years left in the sport were concerned and humility regarding his accomplishments in the cage.

“I don’t know what the future holds for me because I won’t look past Tito, but when this fight is over I will sit down and assess what I want to do. There are some fights out there that do get me excited,” began Griffin in an interview with Fightline. “I like what Matt Hughes is doing. He picks the fights that he thinks he can win and does it on his own terms. I want to fight on my own terms. I’m on the other side of the fence now and don’t see myself fighting these younger guys like Alexander Gustafsson.”

Griffin also acknowledged the looming discussion on retirement, admitting he’d already exceeded his own expectations but would soldier on until it stopped making sense to do so.

“I really don’t know how I want to be remembered when my fighting days are over. It’s an honor if people do remember me at all. For now I will keep fighting as long as my body holds up and I can keep doing it,” he revealed. “No one wants to stop fighting and have to get a real job, especially me! Fighters want to fight forever. When people retire they wind up dying! When I first started fighting I just wanted to make enough money so I wouldn’t have to work. I never thought I’d wind up a UFC champion, maybe in some distant dream I did, but I never imagined it would really happen.”

Renato Sobral earns quick submission win at ONE FC: Destiny of Warriors

It was an action-packed night in Kuala Lumpur thanks to the latest offering from Asian MMA organization ONE FC. The show, dubbed “Destiny of Warriors” featured a number of familiar faces on the lineup including Masakazu Imanari, Roger Huerta, and Renato Sobral.

Sobral, who hadn’t fought since a 2010 loss to Dan Henderson, returned to the ring showing little rust as evident in a quick submission of opponent Tatsuya Mizuno. The finish came after Mizuno scored an early takedown only to end up in the Brazilian’s clutches where “Babalu” sealed the deal with a slick Armbar. The stoppage came less than a minute into the opening round of their bout.

Huerta and Imanari were not as fortunate with each suffering a defeat. A master of leg-locks, Imanari was never able to lock anything concrete in and ended up on the wrong end of a Unanimous Decision with Leandro Issa picking up his seventh straight win. Meanwhile, Huerta fell for the fourth consecutive time after being knocked out cold with a soccer kick by late replacement Zorobabel Moreiria. It was also his third loss by way of a strike-based stoppage.

The Zuffa Family’s Fighters

This should probably begin with a forewarning, I am in no way accusing Zuffa of nepotism by writing this article. Everyone knows, however, a UFC contract alone does not make you part of the Zuffa family. The nucleus of the “family” is made up of the familiar faces of UFC President Dana White, CEO/Owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, matchmakers Joe Silva and Sean Shelby, and to a lesser extent the known voices of the company Bruce Buffer, Joe Rogan, and Mike Goldberg.

There is, however, a list of fighters who have proven to be the promotion’s company men. This is a list of a few men who are consistently at the UFC’s beck and call for any situation, be it short-notice fights, media tours, or any of the other nuances that come with being a part of the world’s largest MMA entity. For the sake of fairness, current champions are excluded from the list.

Considering the fact that two men on this list just anchored UFC 147, now is an appropriate time to look at the peripheral members of the Zuffa family.

The Retirees

Chuck Liddell: Although retired, Chuck serves as the most prominent example of what it means to be “Dana’s boy.” Liddell, the former long-time light heavyweight king, ran roughshod through the division for years. There has not been, and will likely never be another man who did more for the promotion inside the cage. For his services, coupled with his background in business studies, Liddell was given a position as the Vice President of Business Development.

Kenny Florian: With Florian recently hanging it up, it came as no surprise that the lightweight, who stepped up in every capacity that he was needed, was given a position with the UFC. Ken Flo, who has long flexed his analyst chops in the booth, is now a permanent fixture for the promotion’s FX and Fuel TV offerings, as well as a panelist on their very own news show, UFC Tonight.

The TUF Bunch

Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar: These two are eternally linked by what many consider to be the most important fight in the history of the UFC. Their instant classic at the first Ultimate Fighter Finale catapulted the UFC into the mainstream. Dana White has admitted that they will always have a place in the UFC in some capacity. In a UFC 100 video blog, Stephan Bonnar stood against a wall, dejected, after having just dropped his fourth fight in a run of six. The president came up and patted him on the shoulder, congratulating him on a good fight, saying “You and Forrest are like my kids, you’ll always be with the UFC.” Both men have been given broadcasting roles outside of their fighting careers, to some degree, be it the occasional segment on UFC Tonight, or a slot on the broadcast team for shows on Fox’s various platforms in Bonnar’s case.

Josh Koscheck: While oft considered the most hated fighter today, it’s all marketing for Josh Koscheck. He’s comfortable playing that pro wrestling-esque heel role, and he’s damn good at it. Despite this, the NCAA wrestler is always willing to step up and take any challenge on short notice. Often controversial, Koscheck is extremely well spoken when he needs to be and is absolutely one of the premier hype men in the sport today. He has more than proven his loyalty to the promotion and will likely be blessed with some sort of position in the company once he calls it quits, likely in a similar capacity as Florian. The man was born for the spotlight and will hopefully be in front of the cameras when that day does come.

The Legacy Players

Rich Franklin: Yet another man who will do anything for the UFC, Rich Franklin most recently helped the company out by stepping in to face Wanderlei Silva at UFC 147. The long tenured Franklin is the promotion’s former middleweight champion, and has shown that he will compete anywhere and step up whenever the UFC calls. Prior to his rematch with “The Axe Murderer,” Franklin had once again stepped in on short notice to face Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 after Tito Ortiz was pulled from the bout with an injury. Franklin not only took the fight, but took over Ortiz’s coaching position on that season’s TUF. The fan-friendly “Ace” will surely be with the UFC in some capacity when the story of his career come to a close, likely in broadcasting.

Wanderlei Silva: Showing up as a bit of a surprise on this list is “The Axe Murderer”. While Silva spent the majority the of his career in PRIDE, the only promotion to truly rival the UFC in popularity, he has become one of the UFC’s most beloved fighters. In an interview with Karyn Bryant, that took place after Silva’s loss to Franklin on Fuel TV this weekend, the UFC President assured that “since he (Silva) came into the UFC, he’s acted like he’s been in the UFC his whole career. He’s been more than awesome and Wanderlei’s going to be with us for a long time whether he’s fighting or not.” A coach on the inaugural season of TUF: Brazil, Wand, who moved to the states in 2007 stayed in his home country after the six weeks of filming were up to do further promotion for the brand. Meanwhile, in his off-time Silva has been involved in several stateside promotional tours as well, truly the epitome of a company man.

Frank Mir: The former UFC Heavyweight Champion, who nearly had his career cut short, certainly has one of the most inspiring stories in the sport’s history. It comes of no surprise that Mir has shown his appreciation for the UFC never giving up on him and then some with all he’s done outside of the cage. Mir, whose UFC 100 main event with Brock Lesnar remains the highest selling event in the history of the promotion, is always willing to step-in and when needed. Whether it’s a short-notice fight, play-by-play analysis for the WEC, or being a panelist on the various shows for the Fox network, Mir is there for the company in any capacity he’s needed.

Up-and-Comers

Chael Sonnen: The man from the mean streets of West Linn, Oregon has proven to be a commodity for the UFC, both in and out of the cage. Sonnen’s bombastic personality has become a marketing juggernaut for the promotion. Chael P. is one of the most in-demand fighters for interviews, Q-and-A sessions, and media tours today; a call to which he has happily answered by obliging the UFC’s and every one of their whims. On top of all the aforementioned media responsibilities, the best promo man in the business has also served as a panelist on a variety of the UFC’s pre-fight shows and has been given his own segment on UFC Tonight, “Chael’s Corner.” While Sonnen’s role in the media  been slightly turned down recently, ahead of headlining the marquee fight of the summer in his rematch with Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight Champion, it’s a safe bet that he’ll be back in the spotlight regardless of the outcome.

Rashad Evans, Mark Munoz, and Brian Stann: These three men share this slot as they have all been given the role of analysts for nearly all UFC pre-show coverage. All three possess favorable personalities, and a work ethic that is nearly unrivaled both in and out of the cage. They have all proven to be more than competent in their newfound broadcasting roles. It is likely that we will be seeing more of them in this capacity, especially when their plates are not full with upcoming fights. Given the shear volume of UFC programming that fans are treated to these days, this level of insight and personality is a welcome addition to any show the company produces in the future.
