Ronda Rousey not interested in fighting “Cyborg” Santos at 140 pounds

As much as the MMA world may want to see undefeated Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey face former featherweight title-holder Cristiane Santos it appears the bout is as far away from coming to fruition as it’s been since the beginning despite a recent glimmer of hope. Santos, who initially said she could not slim down to 135 pounds in a healthy manner, backed off her stance some last week to explain she could make 140 pounds if necessary.

However, Rousey isn’t taking the bait and is unwilling to meet “Cyborg” halfway, claiming Santos’ inability to cut the required weight relates to steroid use.

“If we did a catchweight of 140, I 100 percent think she’d just come in overweight and be like, ‘Whatever, come fight me.’ Want to know why? Because she’s done it several times before. She has a track record of doing these things. This girl does things that are blatantly disrespectful to her opponents, over and over and over her whole career,” said Rousey in an interview with The MMA Hour. “Someone needs to put their foot down about it. So, yeah, I’m going to be the one that has to do it because I can.”

Rousey Doesn’t Feel Request for “Cyborg” to Slim Down is Unreasonable

Interestingly enough, one area Rousey is no longer so concerned about has to do with Santos undergoing a pre-fight drug test. Santos is currently serving a yearlong suspension after getting popped for performance enhancing drug use this past December.

“I really don’t care about the drug testing. She’s obviously been getting around it for many years,” explained Rousey. “Advances in drug testing, they come up with new ways to catch people every single year because people are coming up with new ways to get around them all the time. The cheaters are always just ahead of the people trying to catch them. That’s why there are always more cheaters.”

“I think the only real way to ensure this is a fair fight is to have her come down to 135, where if she’s doping, anything that she’s taking will be just as much of a detriment as it will be a help to her,” the 25-year old fan-favorite concluded, adding she would gladly fight the winner of a November bout between Sara McMann-Liz Carmouche if Santos remains unwilling to budge on becoming a bantamweight.
