Two lightweights coming off of losses will face one another at The Ultimate Fighter Finale 16 on December 15 in Las Vegas. UFC officials announced today that Jamie Varner and Melvin Guillard have verbally agreed to face one another.
Jamie Varner made his return to Zuffa a successful one at UFC 146 when he was brought in as an injury replacement for Evan Dunham against undefeated Brazilian Edson Barboza. Not too many people gave the former WEC Lightweight Champion a chance, but he wound up knocking Barboza out at 3:23 of the first round.
Varner followed that bout up with a Fight of the Night performance against Joe Lauzon at UFC on Fox 4 in Los Angeles this past August. The two went back and forth before Lauzon doubled his bonus money by catching Varner in a fight ending triangle choke midway through the third round.
At one point last year Guillard was well on his way towards title contention, but one punch by Lauzon followed be a rear naked choke ended a five fight win streak for the Blackzilian lightweight. Guillard would go on to lose to Jim Miller again by rear naked choke just three months later.
After defeating Fabricio Camoes via unanimous decision, Guillard fought good friend and training partner Donald Cerrone at UFC 150. After stunning the Cowboy early, Guillard got careless and wound up getting knocked out just 76 seconds into round number one. The pair did earn the Fight of the Night bonus for their efforts.
TUF Finale 16 will be headlined by a heavyweight match-up pitting bitter enemies Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson against one another. The two finalists will meet to determine the winner of the six-figure contract. Here is the full card:
