The UFC hasn't shaken the massive injury bug that has hit them in 2012, as they've lost another major fight. According to a report from Newsday.com, Chris Weidman has suffered a shoulder injury, taking him out of a fight with Tim Boetsch at UFC 155 on Dec. 29.
Weidman said the injury occurred during a grappling session on Tuesday. He's likely to need surgery and could be out for three-to-six months.
"I hit a double-leg and that's it," Weidman said. "My shoulder landed weird and I felt a pop. I can't even move my arm."
In his place will be teammate Costa Philippou, who lost a fight at UFC 154 when Nick Ring fell ill on Saturday, the day of the event in Montreal. He's won four straight fights into this fight, the same mark Boetsch will enter with at the Las Vegas event.
Penick's Analysis: This is just awful luck for Weidman, whose home in Long Island suffered severe damage from Hurricane Sandy at the end of October. This was a chance for him to keep himself in the running for a title fight late in 2013, and this injury setback will keep him out of the picture for some time. That said, it could move him right into a fight with Michael Bisping should Bisping defeat Vitor Belfort, keeping him on the same timetable as if he would have beaten Boetsch. The only difference will be he'll be on the mend from a likely surgery and coming back after a year or so out of action.
