Matt “Meathead” Mitrione has been tapped to replaced injured Shane Carwin at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale on December 15th. Mitrione will square off against Roy “Big Country” Nelson in the main event of the evening. UFC officials confirmed the bout on Thursday.
Mitrione and Nelson were both members of TUF 10; a season in which “Big Country” walked away as the winner.
Mitrione (5-1) was previously scheduled to take on Philip De Fries at the year-end event UFC 155. De Fries is expected to be offered a replacement opponent for the event. Mitrione has not completed since last October at UFC 137 where he would suffer the only loss of his career when he was outpointed by Cheick Kongo. Four of Mitrione’s five career wins have come by knockout.
Nelson (17-7) is currently serving as a coach for TUF 16. He last fought at UFC 146 in May where he needed just 0:51 to knockout Dave Herman. Nelson captured the TUF 10 title with a first round knockout of Brendan Schaub.
The TUF 16 Finale takes place from The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The main card will be televised live on the FX channel at 9:00pm ET.
