UFC 148 Conference Call: Silva Surprises Everyone, Threatens Sonnen

Most of the time the UFC conference calls are a rather tedious affair, with the same fighter cliches being thrown around and the same questions being asked every time.. Typically, when Chael Sonnen is on the call the call becomes his show, that was not the case on Monday. UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva took frontstage at the call and called out what he was going to do to Sonnen when the Octagon door closes July 7 in Las Vegas.

Silva went off on his UFC 148 opponent like no one had ever heard Anderson speak before for nearly thirty minutes. It seemed as if someone finally told Silva what Chael had been saying about his wife, his friends, his family, and country for over two years and the champ did not hold back. Silva started off the call by referencing Chael’s 2011 money laundering plea deal stating:

“Well first of all, Chael is a criminal, he’s been convicted of crimes, he doesn’t deserve to be in the Octagon and when the time comes and the time is right, I’m going to break his face, and break every one of his teeth in his mouth,”

Silva did not stop there, as the normally laid back fighter completely disappeared and he insisted that he was not kidding stating:

“Right now, I’m focused on what’s going to happen in the next few weeks and right now the playtime is over. I’m going to beat Chael’s ass like it’s never been beat before. The joke is over, there’s no more talking, I know he’s on the line listening and the game’s over. I’m going to beat his ass out of the UFC. He’s never going to want to fight again after I’m done with him. It doesn’t matter if I’m on the bottom, the side, the top, it doesn’t matter. Chael Sonnen’s going to get his ass kicked like he’s never gotten his ass kicked before. What I’m going to do inside the Octagon is something that’s going to change the image of the sport. I’m going to beat his ass like he’s never been beaten before. I’m going to make sure that every one of his teeth are broken, his arms are broke, his legs are broke, he’s not going to be able to walk of the Octagon by himself. I can guarantee that.”

The comments from Silva shocked every  one listening but Silva did not stop there. Insisting that beating Chael in the rematch was not just for his own sake but for his home country of Brazil, which has been a frequent target of Chael’s vitriolic comments.

“I’m just going to make him pay and make him eat everything that he’s said, not only about myself, but about our country, about everything. I’m going to make him pay and make sure that he never disrespects any Brazilian, any fighter. I’m going to beat him maybe the way his parents should have beat him to maybe teach him some manners because he’s disrespectful, he’s a criminal, and I’m going to beat him up like he’s never been beat before, The game’s over. I’m not playing anymore.

There’s going to be no difference in the end. The first time we fought he stepped out the loser and he’s going to step out losing again this time, the only difference this time, he’s going to have to go see a plastic surgeon after the fight.”

While he was speaking through a translator, those that could understand Portuguese could hear that Soares was actually toning down a lot clear anger that Silva was speaking with.

The usually bombastic Sonnen mostly ignored his opponents words but said of the fight:

“There is no fight in combat history that’s got as much weight and as much emotion, not just from the fans and media but from the athletes participating, as this one. So, the stakes are completely different [this time].”

No one was able to ask Sonnen what he thought about Silva’s words however, since Sonnen did not stay on the line long after Silva abruptly left.

UFC President Dana White was clearly thrilled with what went down as he ended the call before Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin had a chance to get involved with the conference. White had this to say about Silva’s comments:

“I’ve promoted every Anderson Silva fight since he’s been in the UFC and I’ve never heard him talk even remotely close to this.”

White said he is believes this event will do PPV buyrates like UFC 100, which did 1.6 million PPV buys. Those kind of numbers would be a welcome site for the UFC, which has not eclipsed a million buys since UFC 121: Velasquez vs. Lesnar.

UFC 148 takes place July 7 live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will be headlined by Silva vs. Sonnen II and co-headlined by Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin III. The event will cap off the first annual “International Fight Week” and will include the induction of Tito Ortiz into the UFC Hall of Fame.
