There was something almost inevitable about it: the scene was perfect, the timing essential, and the man in form. Eight years after his first prologue win in Liege in the Tour de France, ‘Monsieur Prologue’ Fabian Cancellara rolled back the years to claim his fifth Tour de France prologue, with a comprehensive win in the Belgian city on Saturday.
The RadioShack-Nissan rider turned out a time of 7:13 over the 6.4km course. Not even a determined Bradley Wiggins (Sky) finishing second, 7 seconds down, or world time trial champion Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) could come close, although the German will feel aggrieved after he set the fastest time at the first time check but suffered a mechanical and was forced to change bikes.
Defending champion Cadel Evans (BMC) finished in 13th place, nine seconds down on Cancellara, with Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas) and Denis Menchov (Katusha), Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Sharp) impressing with solid performances. French time trial champion Sylvain Chavanel had led for a large portion of the afternoon, nervously awaiting the time trial specialists at the line, but he was demoted, first by Wiggins, and then by Cancellara, to third.
But after all the talk of Wiggins and Evans in the build-up to the race, the day belonged to Cancellara. In the last twelve months, the Swiss rider has found himself on the receiving end of a number of high level losses, with Tony Martin usurping his long-standing crown as the best time triallist in the world, and two campaigns in the Classics without a win. “I thought about my wife, the baby that’s coming, about team that’s given me help, and I’m proud of having done the work I should have done,” Cancellara said at the finish. “This victory is even more special than the other ones I’ve had in the Tour de France., Yes, I’m proud, which is important, and I’m also confident about the rest of the Tour.”

Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland, wearing the overall leader's yellow jersey, mimics rocking a baby as he holds the stuffed lion trophy after winning the prologue of the Tour de France cycling race, an individual time trial over 6,4 kilometers (4 miles) with start and finish in Liege, Belgium
There were murmurs that Cancellara was no longer the powerhouse he used to be, his legs slowing as younger riders developed, and despite uncertainty within his team surrounding missed wages and in-fighting, the experience and most importantly the power were there for all to see in Liège.
“I’m looking forward and not looking back. I’m here on the Tour de France not thinking about the past. The last time the Tour was here, in 2004, I beat Lance [Armstrong] by 1.6 seconds and took the jersey, but that was eight years ago. We have to focus on now because if we let [USADA’s decision to manager Johan Bruyneel with doping] crack us, I wouldn’t be able to perform on the road like I did today. It’s up to Lance and Johan to sort out. One year I was in Bjarne Riis’s team, and he stayed away from the Tour to leave us in peace, so I’ve experienced this before. Johan is just leaving us to get on with the job in peace.”
Liège loosens the Tour tension
The pro peloton had descended on Liège on Wednesday, settling into a pattern of reconnaissance and press conferences. By Friday, as the final pre-race press noise died down, it was clear that the peloton were ready to race. The tension was clear in Liège on Saturday morning with riders testing themselves over the prologue course. Wind variants were considered, final adjustments made to bikes and in the end it was Tom Veellers (Argos-Shimano) who set the ball rolling. The Tour had finally started.
A number of early pacesetters came and went until Brett Lancaster posted the first serious time of the day with a time of 7:24. The GreenEdge rider was edged out by Sky’s Edvald Boasson Hagen but it wasn’t long before Chavanel was on the road.
The Frenchman has improved greatly against the clock in the last twelve months – something he has put down to overcoming a longstanding back problem – and had already won the time trial in De Panne this spring. Along the Liège course he married power with precision, dancing through the few corners in the tricolore of France.
It looked like an unlikely winner could be crowned when he crossed the line in 7:20 and when Philippe Gilbert, David Millar and Andreas Klöden all failed topple the Omega Pharma-QuickStep rider, France dreamed of their first opening day win since Jacky Durand in 1994.

FUEL TV’S RATINGS BLOOM IN JUNE

LOS ANGELES, CA – Three live Ultimate Fighting Championship® Fight Nights and two live motocross races in June delivered FUEL TV its most-watched month ever and it continues to be the industry’s fastest growing ad-supported cable network, according to Nielsen Media Research.

FUEL TV’s June viewership growth was powered by 406 hours of Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) programming, including three live prelim shows for main cards featured on FX. The “TUF Finale Live” Prelims on Friday, June 1, delivered the network its most-watched prelims to date, most-watched Friday and second most-watched Friday prime time in its history. The 406 hours of UFC programming in the month edges out the previous record of 384 hours in April.

For the year, FUEL TV has delivered nearly 1800 hours of UFC programming, and that has driven FUEL TV’s explosive audience increases. In the first six months of 2012, FUEL TV has established itself as the fastest growing network in year-to-year percentage audience growth in total day and during prime time among households, total viewers and men 18-49 compared to Jan. – June 2011.

The Saturday live airings of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship motocross races have emerged this month as an incredible complement to the UFC programming. On June 9, the FMF High Point National, the fourth stop of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, drew 214,000 total viewers and 105,000 men 18-49, ranking as the network’s second most-watched program ever and third in the target demographic. The following race on Saturday, June 16 was the network’s tenth most-viewed program ever with 141,000 total viewers.

FUEL TV June 2012 Audience Highlights:
• June 2012 is the network’s most viewed month ever, surpassing February 2012;

"The UFC fans have found FUEL TV and are tuning into the network every day now,” says Mike Feller, Vice President of Programming, FUEL TV. "The increased viewership numbers are also carrying over to other programs, as we’ve seen with the ratings growth of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship. It’s apparent that both UFC and motocross share similar viewers and make for great complementary programming.”

Extensive UFC coverage continues in the month of July, with FUEL TV telecasting the live Weigh-in and Postfight shows for UFC 148: SILVA VS. SONNEN II on Saturday, July 7; the Weigh-ins, Prefight, Fight Night and Postfight shows for UFC ON FUEL TV: MUNOZ VS. Back door or not, Joey Beltran ready for 'new tricks' in return at UFC on FUEL TV 4

Joey Beltran might not be sure who would play him, but he definitely feels like he's in a movie all of a sudden.

And now, he says, "I've just got to go out and get that storybook ending."

Beltran was cut by the UFC after a January loss to Lavar Johnson. But after just one fight away, he's back - and with the kind of changes he hopes will rejuvenate his career.

Here Comes The Boom! UFC Goes Hollywood with Kevin James

http://www.mmaweekly.com/here-comes-...th-kevin-james

Here Comes The Boom starring Kevin James, Salma Hayek and a slew of other notable names from both Hollywood and the sport of mixed martial arts is starting to build a buzz in the MMA community, as well as the overall entertainment media.

Kevin James and Mayhem Miller in Here Comes the BoomExpected for release on Oct. 12, 2012, Here Comes The Boom follows former collegiate wrestler and 42-year-old high school biology teacher Scott Voss (played by MMA fan and active training participant Kevin James) as he competes in MMA to help raise money for his fledgling high school and the potential cancellation of the school’s music program. The high school music director is played by Henry Winkler (aka “The Fonz” for those of you old enough to remember Happy Days).

The trailer for Here Comes The Boom includes footage from Mark DellaGrotte’s Sityodong, features Bas Rutten as James’ friend and also a large role for UFC commentator and Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner Joe Rogan.

Jason “Mayhem” Miller, Wanderlei Silva, Chael Sonnen, and Arianny Celeste, as well as other notables from the sport of MMA are featured throughout the movie.

The addition of Salma Hayek as the object of James’ affection adds some additional credibility to the film. It should also be noted – and it’s visible in the trailer – that this is the first time in the Zuffa era of the UFC that the promotion has allowed anyone to use its brand name since purchasing the company in 2001.

“I like Kevin and he called me up and he’s passionate about the sport, he wanted to do this movie. We haven’t given the rights to anybody (before),” explained UFC president Dana White. “(In the movie) it’s UFC, we gave him the rights to it.”

Frank Shamrock calls UFC President Dana White "a total douchebag and a bully"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

WhiteDana_TB150_16.jpg
The UFC's Hall of Fame will add Tito Ortiz next week at the UFC Fan Expo before UFC 148, but while Ortiz marks a deserving addition to the field, one name continues to be conspicuously absent: Frank Shamrock.

Shamrock was the first ever UFC Light Heavyweight Champion (then known as the middleweight championship), and defended the title three times before "retiring" after defeating Ortiz at UFC 22. However, his importance to the UFC at that stage hasn't been recognized by Zuffa, and most notably UFC President Dana White.

The relationship between Shamrock and White has been contentious for some time, and Shamrock's refusal to bend at any point, along with a continued outspokenness against the UFC and White throughout the years has kept him from being recognized by the organization.

Appearing on Thursday's edition of MMA Uncensored Live on Spike TV, Shamrock commented on Ortiz's induction, as well as the fact that he's still not in that field.

"Honestly, I didn't really care, but my wife was pretty pissed that I wasn't in the Hall of Fame," Shamrock said (transcribed by BloodyElbow.com). "I don't care. I think it's awesome that Tito's in. He deserves to be in there. I believe I should be in the Hall of Fame, but it ain't my Hall of Fame. If they wanna put me in, that's great. It's not gonna keep me up at night...

"Here's my thing. I did everything I could for the sport, from speaking to the commissions to presenting in front of cable companies - anything and everything, I was hired to go do it. I was a great spokesman, and I believe in this sport. If they wanna put me in or not, it's totally up to them. I think it's just a big knuckle-fest. God bless Tito, and I'm real proud that he's made it."

While Shamrock would like to get the recognition of the UFC Hall of Fame, he quickly made it clear that his feelings on White haven't changed, and it's a very personal feud between the two of them.

"It's definitely personal between Dana and I," he said. "To further that, I've done everything I can possibly do for this sport. I hope that would include UFC. You know, Dana and I don't get along. I think he's a total douchebag and a bully. I just, I got no breath for him."

Shamrock went even further than that, commenting on getting a chance to meet White in a dark alley.

"As Dana's first martial arts instructor, I understand his skill set and his limitations," Shamrock said, "and I would love to have that moment."

Penick's Analysis: Shamrock likes to believe he has the moral ground on everything, but he often undermines a lot of what he says. Look, there's no good reason for Shamrock's absence from the UFC Hall of Fame. In any MMA Hall of Fame, Shamrock's credentials from the early days of the sport absolutely put him in there. However, his issues with Dana White blind him at times. Calling White a "douchebag and a bully" and then saying he'd "love" to have a moment with him in a back alley is ridiculous. That's a ridiculous mindset that can say "he's a bully/oh, I'd love to beat him up," and it's not the first time he's contradicted his message in that way. Still, to the point at hand, Shamrock should be in the UFC Hall of Fame, and his absence keeps that particular Hall of Fame from being anything other than a promotional tool.

The Rise and Fall of “The Last Emperor” (Part 1)

Fedor EmelianenkoFedor Emelianenko began his mixed martial arts career in Ekaterinburg, Russia, after a stint in the military and a successful grappling career that left him well trained but struggling with financial hardship. While small by today’s heavyweight standards, the Russian fighter would only taste defeat once (by technicality) for ten years before falling to Fabricio Werdum. Unfortunately, his legacy has been marred due to the fallout of bitter failed negotiations, with his fans clinging to his halcyon days in PRIDE and his detractors using revisionist history to belittle his career. So what is the real legacy of “The Last Emperor?” Well to know that, you have to take a look at the rise and fall of Emelianenko with the understanding of how things were then.

Fedor’s hype did not come from garish entrances, self-promotion, or any other forms of marketing. While it helped to have an absolute master of hyperbole in Mauro Ranallo calling many of the man’s fights for US fans, the Russian fighter never once came across as boastful or arrogant. The aura of greatness came from cutting a swath through the heavyweight division like no one has or may ever do again. While a lot has been said about the competition he faced, it is important to consider for a moment that Gan McGee, the late Justin Eilers, “Tank” Abbott, etc. all challenged for the UFC heavyweight title during the same period. Also keep in mind that Fedor typically weighed around 225lbs in a division with no weight limit. Just about every heavyweight drops a bout early in their progression no matter how good they are, but only a technicality would give Fedor a loss for the first ten years of his career.

Heavyweight (and MMA in general) was one or two-dimensional everywhere at the time of Fedor’s reign, with guys specialized in one or two areas but rarely having it together like today. The fact that Combat SAMBO is a comprehensive martial arts system enabled him to be a rare, well-rounded fighter in the early days of MMA (it helps that Fedor is considered the best to ever don the kurtka). Fedor gained the hype by defeating the best out there in multiple disciplines, often by turning what made a fighter good into a weakness.

With that said, it takes more than just skills in this sport. Fedor’s ability to take punishment and then gain an advantage is a large part of what propelled him up the ladder. A perfect example of this was his 2004 defeat of former UFC heavywight champion Kevin Randleman, who had just defeated Mirko Cro Cop. Fedor was slammed in one of the most horrific positions imaginable, yet less than a minute later the former UFC champion was tapping to a kimura from Fedor. That ability to make a dramatic shift happen anywhere in the ring is what elevated him to mythical levels. Of course, all of that adds up over time and it is what began the Fedor’s fall as a top heavyweight.

Fedor was a fighter who entered into his prime with the demise of RINGS and the ascension of PRIDE FC. From about 2002 to 2005 Fedor fought a staggering 15 times against some of the best the heavyweight division had to offer. During that same period he also won two World SAMBO championships. To put that in perspective, Junior Dos Santos has fought 16 fights in his nearly six-year career. The amount of wear and tear on the body while fighting so often in a short time span is tremendous. So there is perhaps little coincidence that after that period Fedor only fought more than twice a year once. Couple Fedor’s growing injuries with the deterioration of PRIDE’s finances, and the rise of the UFC, and it was clear that times were changing.

Make sure to check back tomorrow as we look back at Fedor’s complicated fall from the top of the heavyweight ranks.

UFC 148 Primetime features revealing look at camps of Chael Sonnen, Anderson Silva

This coming Saturday night the biggest MMA fight of the year is set to unfold from Las Vegas at UFC 148 when middleweight champion Anderson Silva mixes it up with nemesis Chael Sonnen. The two fought once before in 2010 in a bout seeing Sonnen nearly earn a decision win before suffering a submission loss in the closing minutes of the final frame. Since then the talented 185ers have been jawing at each other, offering up both personal and professional insults, and things certainly didn’t change on the episode of UFC Primetime produced for the bout.

The program aired over the weekend and featured both men preparing for the title-fight.

“I’ve been paying the price since I was nine years old when I started. I’ve sacrificed everything, and I would give everything I’ve got – everything, I’d give it all back – to be world champion for one night,” admitted Sonnen at one point in the show.

Sonnen Doesn’t Care if He’s in Silva’s Head

The UFC has now made the episode available for fans unable to catch it the first time around and delivered it in a commercial-free format.

Five Reasons For Concern Of UFC Over Saturation

By Matt Molgaard
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Let’s be honest here, as of late, we’ve been force fed a
slew of UFC hosted events. Being highly addicted to the sport in general, I’m
not personally opposed to all the action, but one must wonder, has the
abundance of events stolen away from the mystique of the fight game? Once upon
a time fans were forced to wait months in between events. At the time, it
seemed to be quite disheartening having to wait months to catch a good fight,
but in hindsight, the scheduling enabled the promotion to create stars.

Remember the days when fans clamored for a Chuck Liddell
fight? It was almost painful to wait months to see the man take to the cage,
and that manufactured a level of anticipation that is all but non-existent in
today’s mixed martial arts landscape. Cards seemingly roll in with the breeze
these days, and it’s made for a challenge in creating truly massive draws.
Fighters like Jon jones, Anderson Silva, Georges St. Pierre, Nick Diaz and
Junior dos Santos still garner heavy anticipation; we can’t wait to see these
men compete. However, when you’re running a promotion that boasts hundreds of fighters
on their roster, a small handful of truly marquee faces isn’t exactly profound.

The problem, in my personal opinion, is the UFC’s sudden and
strange inability to create bona fide household names. There are spectacular
fighters signed with the promotion, but they’re never gifted the promotional
push to elevate their status from “good fighter”, to legit “superstar” status
worthy of raking in major ticket sales and big Pay-Per-View buys.

Fighters like Dominick Cruz, Fabricio Werdum, Dan Henderson,
Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida, Michael Bisping, Chris Weidman, Martin Kampmann,
Jake Ellenberger, Gray Maynard, Anthony Pettis, Jose Aldo, Chad Mendes, Diego
Nunes and Renan Barao (to name just a few) are supremely talented individuals
who aren’t being marketed as legit superstars, when in fact, they should,
without a doubt be. These are remarkably skilled individuals who should command
undivided attention. Yet, they’re not; ask a casual fan to name a few mixed
martial artists, and it’s highly unlikely that these names will surface in
conversation. It’s a travesty in my mind, as these guys are deserving of the
highest level of respect from fans.

It’s not happening, and I’ve got a few theories as to why.

Watered Down Cards: I understand that UFC brass is aiming to
make more names and faces recognizable, I really do (and I respect them
immensely for that), but when you’re running events with two to three
recognizable fighters competing, while cluttering undercards with virtual
unknowns, it steals away from the event’s mystique. Fans enjoy cards with
plenty of familiar faces, not a small handful, and if a fan is expected to buy
a card, he (or she) is probably hoping for a solid half dozen top notch
talents, not a few great fighters and a load of unrecognizable competitors
cluttering the undercard.

Schedules: We’ve gotten to a point in which events are being
showcased on damn near every night of the week. Friday nights don’t
statistically draw huge viewer bases. It’s Friday night, the work week has
wound down and most are eager to get a little time on the town after five
grueling days of listening to a boss raise qualms over any mistake made. The
first thing on many minds is knocking back some cold ones and venting with
friends and associates, not dedicating two to three hours watching fights,
especially when Saturday nights have long been the practice for showcasing UFC
events.

Too Much of The Ultimate Fighter: I personally still tune in
to every season of TUF. I love fights, and I like to get a look at the inner
recesses of a fighters mind. However, in just over a half decade we’ve seen
more than fifteen seasons of the show, and it’s begun to wear thin on casuals.
I understand the desire to take the reality show to an international level, but
one season a year could go a long way in producing genuine stars. When it
becomes difficult to keep up with reality show contestants and the sheer number
of seasons produced, it’s not all too easy to become emotionally attached to a
fighter.

Television Expansion: Again, I personally love all the
fights available to fans. However, with FOX, FX and FUEL constantly running
past events, fights and newly aligned cards, the sport has taken on a bit too
much for even diehard fans to keep pace. I don’t have a problem with the
abundance of fights being televised, but new fans are being bombarded with so
many events that it’s become difficult distinguishing one fighter from another.
To make matters worse, some of the smaller shows to be broadcast by channels
like FUEL TV and FX are often severely under-promoted. The promotion for UFC on
FX 3 was treated to a dismal promotional push: I can’t count how many
associates I had to inform that the card was even taking place. There’s a
serious lack of visibility for some of these cards which seem to lack star
power. If the goal is to lure viewers into the fold, make every event
(regardless of how significant the fights may or may not be in the grand scheme
of things) highly visible, and work endlessly to promote these headlining
competitors to the greatest extent possible.

Sheer Volume: At this point, just six months into 2012, the
UFC has hosted fourteen events (sans the actual reality show), with another two
scheduled back-to-back for this weekend. Sixteen events inside a half calendar year
can easily be considered rather excessive.

Averaging nearly three events a month is (arguably) draining the magic
from the sport, and as aforementioned, it’s hindering the ability to build big
personalities. We never get a chance to learn who these fighters are, because
the promotion’s stable of fighters has grown so massive that it’s challenging
to find familiar faces and styles that truly capture the adoration of fans. At
this point, another eleven events are already scheduled for 2012, totaling
twenty five cards this year, and we may still be in for the announcement of a
year-end show, which would lift the tally to twenty six events. Again, factor
in the multiple seasons of The Ultimate Fighter this year, and we’re being
bombarded with so many events it’s difficult to even keep track of the action.
Not to mention, in today’s economy, shelling out $50-$60 per Pay-Per-View event
isn’t realistic: when at least fifteen to eighteen shows will hit the play platform.
Think for a minute and do the math. Fifteen events at $50 bucks a pop is $750.
That’s an awful lot to shell out for one single year’s entertainment,
especially if you plan on having some drinks while watching.

The Techniques of MMA

Fans agree – boxing and wrestling have been taken over in popularity in recent years. Mixed Martial Arts is now being considered as the number one combat sport. It continues to receive positive reviews from various sports organizations and sports fans all over the world. This increase in popularity of MMA has prompted schools and martial arts centers to include MMA in their training programs. Learning the techniques of MMA, however, is not an easy thing. It’s not as simple as choosing your mma clothing and gear and attending training sessions. MMA training is difficult and the programs may look easy but they are even more challenging than other disciplines like judo or karate. But if you’re serious in learning the techniques of MMA and you’re looking for a gym in your area, chances are they have programs that match your goals and it doesn’t matter whether you just want to improve your physique or if you want to be a fighter in the arena.

Anderson Silva shows off goofy side (VIDEO)

If Anderson Silva is your favorite fighter, chances are it's not just because he can front kick people into oblivion or pull last-minute triangle armbars out of thin air. He also has a goofy side to him fans can relate to. The top fighter in the world puts that goofiness on full display in the blooper reel from his series of Budweiser ads that will be aired in Brazil.

Did you know that Silva can dance? Perhaps he needs to be the next fighter on "Dancing with the Stars."

Very good Long Steven Seagal Interview

I thought this guy was a clown, but have much more respect for him. I started listening to this and ended listing to the whole dam thing!! Very interesting. I don't agree with everything he says, discredits Jon Jones, but does not think Anderson should fight him because of a size difference. Seems kind of weak seeing Silva has a size advantage over most of his opponents @ 185. He keeps up with what is going on in MMA and really does not have much to gain trying to seek attention when he shows up at events. I used to think it was a self promoting type of thing but he sounds genuine and just loves combat and wants to be a part of it. If he was blowing smoke he could have laid it on much thicker but he sounds genuine to me.

MMA Marketplace: Rich Franklin’s not-awful UFC 147 Affliction walkout shirt

Among the companies who sponsor fighters and make MMA clothing, Affliction is at the bottom of the ladder. Its clothes are usually badly designed and overpriced, but with their shirt for Rich Franklin for UFC 147, they did alright.

It's a cool, aviator nod to his nickname "Ace," and though a skull is used, it's not overdone. It's still ridiculously overpriced at $57.95, but at least it's not ugly and overpriced.

Sam Stout-Spencer Fisher end trilogy on high note with Fight of the Night bonus

UFC lightweights Sam Stout and Spencer Fisher reminded the world last night why their trilogy was still relevant even if they hadn’t fought each other in five years, turning in an extremely entertaining back-and-forth brawl seeing Stout emerge with a closely-contested Unanimous Decision. In honor of both their bout at UFC on FX 4, as well as their two previous meetings, the two received Fight of the Night honors and an extra $50,000 for their collective showing.

Fisher Expected to Retire After Fight with Stout

Submission of the Night also went to an individual involved in a “feel good” story with Dan Miller notching the award. Miller put opponent Ricardo Funch away in closing minutes of the third round to snap a two-fight losing streak to the raucous approval of his fellow New Jersey natives in attendance. He too came away with $50,000 for the distinction.

Finally, Knockout of the Night and $50,000 were dished out to Cub Swanson for his scintillating stoppage of Ultimate Fighter 9 winner Ross Pearson. The win was Swanson’s second in a row by way of TKO.

Mr. Rubinstein has been a member of the board of directors of Stratus since March 2011 and has been chairman of the audit committee since that time. He is a member of the board of directors and the chairman of the audit committee of CKE Restaurants, the parent company of Carl’s Jr. Restaurants and Hardee’s Restaurants, which had $1.3 billion in revenues in 2011. He also serves as the non-executive chairman of U.S. Global Investors Inc., a mutual fund advisory company which had $42 million of revenues in 2011 and $2.6 billion of assets under management. Mr. Rubinstein has created and sold numerous companies during his career, including Bel Air Savings and Loan and DMX, a cable and satellite music distribution company. Mr. Rubinstein started and sold XTRA Music Ltd., a satellite and cable music distribution company in Europe. Most recently Mr. Rubinstein consults with, and serves on, 3 early stage development companies. Mr. Rubinstein is both a CPA and attorney.

Payout Perspective:

It will be interesting to see how Rubinstein will do with ProElite. As reported this past March, ProElite was delinquent with its SEC reporting. At the time of the report, ProElite indicated that it would take care of the necessary filings with the SEC. As of now, ProElite has no events scheduled and it could be a result of the lack of capital at this point. Hopefully, Rubinstein will be able to turn the company around.

UFC 148 Conference Call: Silva Surprises Everyone, Threatens Sonnen

Most of the time the UFC conference calls are a rather tedious affair, with the same fighter cliches being thrown around and the same questions being asked every time.. Typically, when Chael Sonnen is on the call the call becomes his show, that was not the case on Monday. UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva took frontstage at the call and called out what he was going to do to Sonnen when the Octagon door closes July 7 in Las Vegas.

Silva went off on his UFC 148 opponent like no one had ever heard Anderson speak before for nearly thirty minutes. It seemed as if someone finally told Silva what Chael had been saying about his wife, his friends, his family, and country for over two years and the champ did not hold back. Silva started off the call by referencing Chael’s 2011 money laundering plea deal stating:

“Well first of all, Chael is a criminal, he’s been convicted of crimes, he doesn’t deserve to be in the Octagon and when the time comes and the time is right, I’m going to break his face, and break every one of his teeth in his mouth,”

Silva did not stop there, as the normally laid back fighter completely disappeared and he insisted that he was not kidding stating:

“Right now, I’m focused on what’s going to happen in the next few weeks and right now the playtime is over. I’m going to beat Chael’s ass like it’s never been beat before. The joke is over, there’s no more talking, I know he’s on the line listening and the game’s over. I’m going to beat his ass out of the UFC. He’s never going to want to fight again after I’m done with him. It doesn’t matter if I’m on the bottom, the side, the top, it doesn’t matter. Chael Sonnen’s going to get his ass kicked like he’s never gotten his ass kicked before. What I’m going to do inside the Octagon is something that’s going to change the image of the sport. I’m going to beat his ass like he’s never been beaten before. I’m going to make sure that every one of his teeth are broken, his arms are broke, his legs are broke, he’s not going to be able to walk of the Octagon by himself. I can guarantee that.”

The comments from Silva shocked every one listening but Silva did not stop there. Insisting that beating Chael in the rematch was not just for his own sake but for his home country of Brazil, which has been a frequent target of Chael’s vitriolic comments.

“I’m just going to make him pay and make him eat everything that he’s said, not only about myself, but about our country, about everything. I’m going to make him pay and make sure that he never disrespects any Brazilian, any fighter. I’m going to beat him maybe the way his parents should have beat him to maybe teach him some manners because he’s disrespectful, he’s a criminal, and I’m going to beat him up like he’s never been beat before, The game’s over. I’m not playing anymore.

There’s going to be no difference in the end. The first time we fought he stepped out the loser and he’s going to step out losing again this time, the only difference this time, he’s going to have to go see a plastic surgeon after the fight.”

While he was speaking through a translator, those that could understand Portuguese could hear that Soares was actually toning down a lot clear anger that Silva was speaking with.

The usually bombastic Sonnen mostly ignored his opponents words but said of the fight:

“There is no fight in combat history that’s got as much weight and as much emotion, not just from the fans and media but from the athletes participating, as this one. So, the stakes are completely different [this time].”

No one was able to ask Sonnen what he thought about Silva’s words however, since Sonnen did not stay on the line long after Silva abruptly left.

UFC President Dana White was clearly thrilled with what went down as he ended the call before Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin had a chance to get involved with the conference. White had this to say about Silva’s comments:

“I’ve promoted every Anderson Silva fight since he’s been in the UFC and I’ve never heard him talk even remotely close to this.”

White said he is believes this event will do PPV buyrates like UFC 100, which did 1.6 million PPV buys. Those kind of numbers would be a welcome site for the UFC, which has not eclipsed a million buys since UFC 121: Velasquez vs. Lesnar.

UFC 148 takes place July 7 live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will be headlined by Silva vs. Sonnen II and co-headlined by Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin III. The event will cap off the first annual “International Fight Week” and will include the induction of Tito Ortiz into the UFC Hall of Fame.

2 Title Changes At TNA’s No Surrender PPV

Two title changes took place Sunday night at No Surrender as Winter regained the Women’s Knockout Championship from Mickie James while Austin Aries beat Brian Kendrick to capture the X Division Championship.

The title changes were forewarned prior to the event as a match line-up for the Sept. 23 TNA live event in Springfield, Illinois listed Aries as the X Division Champion and Winter as the Women’s Knockouts Champion. We reported both these title changes in our **SPOILER** report on Sunday afternoon.

Robert Roode defeated Bully Ray via pinfall to win the Bound for Glory Series and earn a match for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship next month at Bound for Glory. Roode beat Gunner via submission earlier in the show, tying Bully Ray’s 52-point total—Ray beat James Storm in the second match of the event. This set up the tiebreaker match between Roode and Ray. It obviously looks like Roode is in for a huge TNA push.
