Jon Anik needs to be fired (open letter to the mma gods)

i've been a loyal mma fan for over a decade now. the first ufc i ever watched was ufc 34, and since then i've been hooked. later i found pride fc which only pulled me deeper into my new addiction. there was something about mma that stuck out. yeah, yeah, we all love the blood, the violence, and we even love the technique, the athleticism, the discipline, and all that good shit. the thing that made mma so diffrent is that it was so fucking real. all the great fighters that came out of the early ufc days or out of the glory days of pride were so genuine that you almost felt like you knew them. sakuraba was such an enchanting character because you knew for sure that his quarky sense of humor and his showmanship came from his love of entertaining. it wasn't cause he wanted a shoe deal with nike, it wasn't cause he was trying to reach a specific demographic, he came to fight cause he loved to do it, and he did it in his own innovative way. even the commentating teams of bass and quadros and goldie and rogan were so genuine in their assesment of the action that we felt like we knew them a buddies sitting down to watch the fights with you. even the president of the ufc, as annoying and cunty as he may be at times, is a genuine guy. this is exactly where jon anik sucks. he may be a real fan of mma, but the fact is that he is not my buddy.

listening to him call fights sounds like a guy doing something he gets paid to do. joe rogan, bass rutten, hell even mauro fucking reanallo sound like guys who are there watching the fights with you. (michael schivello also sucks and though he does sound like he is there to enjoy the fights he;s not my buddy either. he's more like that guy from work who invites himself over and you give him shitty directions in hopes he gets lost, but he just grabs your address from a directory and uses his gps to find your house) i don't think anik is a shitty analyst. i think he's great on ufc tonight and other post production recap shows, but he's just not good at calling the fights. like an enthusiasm vampire, anik just sucks the life out of every fight he calls.

this last ufc on fx card had two HL reel KO's, a sub, and a back and forward split decision battle... i should have really enjoyed the card, but i didn't... why? well half way through watching the barboza fight i realized that anik and florian are bad at their jobs. the whole card was full of awkward silences, forced enthusiasm, and monotone analysis in the way of rehearsed statistics and strait up cliches. yeah i know, goldie has rehearsed statistics on hand and has more cliches than a fucking 80's movie, BUT he's my buddy. i know goldie, i like goldie; despite all his imperfections he's my goddamn buddy.

to be fair this isn't anik's fault. one can't blame him for taking a job that all of us keyboard warriors would love to have. it's fox sports... they're the ones to blame. as mma gets bigger we're gonna meet more aniks. fox is run by old white guys who refuse to die. even if young people, like anik, get to positions of power, they still had to appease these old relics. it's not just anik either, jon jones should be the most loved guy in mma. what he does in the cage is nothing short of memorizing. yet, because of his fakeness, we all wish he had hit that tree just a little harder.

i know mma is gonna grow and i know we are far removed from the "just bleed" era, but it is my hope that the ufc remembers what got them through the dark ages. when the ufc was banned on ppv, it was internet forum dwellers that kept it alive. when pride was making noise in japan, it was the sherdog.net's and the underground's that allowed the american public to take interest. as we all know, the online community demands authenticity. (or exceptional lying skills... war judo throws) just a hint of fakeness is enough to set off an avalanche of privacy invasion, harassment, and even death threats. but despite all of that, mma won the aproval of the internet and the young people who grew up with it. (and wimmy) jon anik wouldn't make it through the asylum; there's no room for his canned statistics and lethargic puns. and if the ufc wants to keep the momentym that got them to the big lights, they need to fire anik.

with that it's 2:30am and my porn is done downloading. fap time
