ROUNDTABLE: Impressions of World Series of Fighting debut on NBC Sports Network

What were your impressions of the first World Series of Fighting event? What would you like to see from them in the future?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Honestly, I don't really have an impression of what the WSOF is, what they're trying to be, or what they accomplished on Saturday night. Part of me thinks they're trying to make a quick buck and cash out, based on the three gigantic mismatches they put on the main card. But another part of me thinks they want to breed up and coming talent regardless of name recognition, based on putting Marlon Moraes in against an overrated and declining Miguel Angel Torres (as an aside, had Torres caught Moraes early, then he would been added to the mismatch list, so what do I know, right?).

So I'm pretty well ambivalent, and I don't have enough information to make anything more than an educated guess on this one. I think I'd be surprised if they were around by the end of 2013. Their deal with NBC Sports isn't a locked in type of deal; it's a glorified time-buy. So I don't think we can look at their TV deal as proof that they're going to be here for the long haul. And look, I don't know if I want them to exist, seeing as how their first show had Devin Cole on the card, and in the main event no less.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I thought it was a good card, depending on your expectations. There was some good fights, and a few surprises. I was surprised that Miguel Torres lost, but I guess he's not the fighter he used to be. They just need to try to put on the best fights they can and don't worry about getting big names. It doesn't matter if they're famous or not, don't overpay for fighters. Try to build slowly.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

This was not the best MMA event I have ever watched, but I knew it would not be. The best fighters in the world are in the UFC and Bellator. Having said that, this is a promotion that could stay around because it has the backing of a large network with a huge amount of money behind it. I would like to see a better mix of older fighters trying to make it back to the big show and more young fighters trying to make it period. This league needs to figure out what it wants to be when it grows up. How many promotions have come and gone? If they can have consistently good cards then they can stay around as the third largest promotion. Other smaller promotions have had some success and have had some great cards. NBC could have done a WAY better job promoting the card. How hard would it have been to run some promo’s on the regular NBC networks? If they use their size correctly, NBC can make the World Series of Fighting a brand that is worth watching and one that stays around for a long time.

BRAD WALKER, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I think it was a solid card that (mostly) delivered what was expected of it, solid knockouts. Rumble looks like an absolute beast at 205, a weightclass he should definetly stay at. Arlovski picked up a win that was completely expected and in the process is starting to gain some more traction in the US as a reasonably decent fighter. I was absolutely floored by the Torres fight, Miguel is really in a weird spot in his career right now, he should be a top 10 fighter but he repeatedly fails himself morally (twitter) gets fired (UFC) then loses to an opponent he should have crushed. Tyrone Sprong is going to be an absolutely scary light heavyweight, I think coming out of the card he's the one I want to see the most in the future, the man has an infinite amount of potential. They need to keep the formula they have started here with some big names on the top of a card against under dogs until they establish a deep enough talent pool to have some of the top guys face off against eachother. Overall not a bad card at all, except I still strongly dislike the fact that Devin Cole is employed by them.
