David Petraeus, the director of the CIA, has submitted a letter of resignation to US President Barack Obama, citing an extramarital affair.
In a message on Friday to the CIA workforce, Petraeus said: "After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair.
"Such behaviour is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organisation such as ours."
