UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones and Chael Sonnen will serve as coaches for Season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter. UFC President Dana White revealed the news to the LA Times on Tuesday.
Filming for The Ultimate Fighter will begin on October 29th in Las Vegas. The new season, which debuts in January, will feature fighters in the middleweight division. Jones and Sonnen will then square off against each other in April.
Jones and Sonnen became linked in August during the fallout of the cancellation of UFC 151. Jones was scheduled to defend his title against Dan Henderson in the main event of the card. However, Henderson was injured and Sonnen was ultimately offered as a replacement opponent. Jones declined the fight with Sonnen much to the ire of White and MMA fans everywhere.
UFC 151 would be canceled as Jones would eventually defend his title against Vitor Belfort at UFC 152. Leading up to the fight Sonnen continued to hint that he would still be fighting Jones. That wasn’t the case as Jones would defeat Vitor by submission in the fourth round. However, Sonnen continued to take shots at Jones on Twitter and as an analyst for UFC events. Over the last few days on Twitter it seemed that Jones had also warmed to the possibility of facing Sonnen. White stated it best, “This should be a good one. Jon has accepted the fight. He knows the fans want to see that fight.”
