Despite some controversy surrounding the placement of champion Zoila Gurgel on the lineup, Bellator 78 delivered a solid dose of entertainment thanks to a number of other notable appearances on the main card. Slated for scraps tonight in Ohio, Bellator stars Daniel Straus and Brian Rogers saw action in addition to the show featuring welterweight semifinal bouts between Marius Zaromskis-Andrey Koreshkov and Lyman Good-Michail Tsarev.
Straus, a former featherweight tournament finalist and one of the brightest 145ers outside of the UFC‘s roster, looked sharp en route to a second round submission of opponent Alvin Robinson. Straus maintained a relentless pace, grinding Robinson down until the right opportunity appeared for a fight-ending Rear-Naked Choke.
Meanwhile, Rogers did his best to end Dominique Steele‘s evening with strikes in hopes of earning his ninth knockout in ten total wins. However, Steele showed a ton of durability throughout their tilt, eating some stiff blows but hanging on to ultimately lose a decision.
In tournament action, Koreshkov likely surprised a number of viewers with his crisp stand-up and maybe even Zaromskis too as it turned out. The former DREAM champ never got off any real shots in the bout, as the unbeaten Russian showed superiority from start to finish, dropping Zaromskis in the opening round and pounding him out for the TKO win.
Facing Koreshkov for the right to compete against divisional champ Ben Askren will be Good who also earned a strike-based stoppage in his respective rumble. The finish came in the second stanza after Tsarev complained of an eye-poke and Good pounced, firing off a combo with one strike putting Tsarev on his backside to draw the referee’s attention for the TKO victory.
Last but certainly not least, Gurgel got back to business by picking up a hard-fought decision win over Casey Noland. The bout was back-and-forth at times though “The Warrior Princess” got the better of nearly every striking exchange and scored with mat-work as well.
