Daniel Cormier: “Love him or hate him, Jon Jones is a great champ.”

Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier has spoken openly before about his interest in slimming down to 205 pounds for an opportunity to face UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones. However, just because Cormier wants to put his paws on Jones doesn’t mean he has a problem with the polarizing pugilist on a personal level. Rather, it’s the opposite, as Cormier has a great deal of respect for Jones’ talent and wants to test himself.

Cormier’s glowing opinion of Jones grew even more as a result of the 25-year old’s UFC 152 title-defense against Vitor Belfort. While Belfort’s near-submission of “Bones” left some folks thinking Jones is more vulnerable than previously believed, Cormier came away with a different take on the matter.

“People saying Saturday night gives (the light heavyweight division) hope. I disagree. Jon Jones showed that he loves being the champ and everything that comes with it,” wrote Cormier on Twitter. “Someone will have to take his belt. He isn’t giving it up. Most men would have tapped to that Armbar. Love him (or) hate him Jones is a (great) champ.”

Cormier Elaborates on Desire to Fight Jones

The unbeaten Cormier is expected to join the UFC after a final fight under the Strikeforce banner. He is currently scheduled for a November 3 show in Oklahoma City but lacks an adversary, as original opponent Frank Mir recently went down with injury.
