The all-female Invicta FC event scheduled for October 6 in Kansas City took a hit a month or so ago when they learned that Cat Zingano would not be fighting on the card because she was taking a Strikeforce fight against Amanda Nunes. Zingano, undefeated at 6-0, would have taken to the ring this weekend at the since-cancelled Strikeforce card previously scheduled for this Saturday. With the show scrapped, Invicta FC has announced “Alpha” is back on the card and will be fighting as originally planned.
“We are excited about bringing Cat back into the fold and to be able to give her the opportunity to compete on an Invicta FC card after preparing as much as she did for her scheduled fight with Amanda,” said Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp in a press release. Zingano will face Raquel Pennington (3-1) in a bantamweight fight at the company’s third entry into the MMA lexicon.
Invicta had offered Nunes and Zingano an opportunity to fight on the card, but according to Invicta, Nunes had sustained an injury and was not able to fight anyways. As such, they decided that Zingano would be fighting Pennington.
Zingano has finished four of her six opponents by knockout or submission. She began training Jiu-Jitsu under Professor Mauricio Zingano in 2007 and by the end of the year she had picked up a huge win at the World Jiu Jitsu Championships. She later married Mauricio, took her first amateur bout in MMA, and hasn’t looked back.
“Rocky” Pennington will be fighting for the second time in Invicta cage when she steps into it against Zingano. After winning a unanimous decision over Sarah Moras at Invicta FC 2 in July, she headed to Hawaii for a fight just six weeks later. At that event she picked up a first round submission win over Raquel Pa’aluhi. Pennington’s amateur career, where she put together a 7-1 record, included a TKO win over Kim Couture whom she finished by TKO with knees to the body.
