Michael Bisping: “I was doing this when Chris Weidman was probably getting bullied out of his lunch money in school.”

UFC middleweight Michael Bisping has no problem with the notion of 185-pound peer Chris Weidman’s status as a tough competitor with a ton of promise. However, the same cannot be said when it comes to Weidman being the division’s top contender.

In Bisping’s estimation he’s done enough over the past few years to earn a title-shot including his recent win over Brian Stann. And, if the UFC isn’t willing to acknowledge his status as the chief challenger to Anderson Silva’s crown, Bisping’s open to fighting Weidman to prove it.

“I was doing this when Chris Weidman was probably getting bullied out of his lunch money in school,” said Bisping in an interview with Inside MMA. “He’s undefeated, but he’s only had nine fights. Listen, the guy’s an incredible talent, and he’s a great prospect, but he’s still young in his career. Weidman’s got the youth and potential and all the tools to have a great career.”

“I’ve got nothing against Chris Weidman,” he continued. “It certainly seems that I do, because of I’ve been talking a lot of trash about him. I’m just trying to sell myself. I’m trying to provide for myself, and Chris Weidman’s a competitor against me. I wish him all the best. But, I think I deserve it, and my time’s now. If I’ve gotta fight Chris Weidman in the meantime? So be it.”

“The Count” Breaks Down the Middleweight Division

Bisping was not listed on the medical report from UFC 152 where he fought last weekend. As such, he is technically available to fight again in the coming months. Meanwhile, Weidman is scheduled for a bout with Tim Boetsch on December 29 at UFC 155.

Carlos Condit: “I feel like I did the right thing in waiting for Georges.”

With the UFC officially confirming Carlos Condit’s upcoming clash with Georges St-Pierre in November, the 28-year old “Natural Born Killer” can finally breathe a sigh of relief after putting his own career on hold in order to let the linear welterweight champion recover from a serious knee injury. Condit was awarded the division’s interim title after beating Nick Diaz in February, passing on opportunities to defend it against a number of worthy contenders while maintaining faith GSP would return on time to fight in 2012.

Though he received a good deal of criticism from fans who questioned his approach to competition, as well as the notion of an interim belt collecting dust, it seems clear Condit would make the same decision again if given a second go at the situation.

“My goal in this sport is to be the best in the world. Georges St-Pierre is the best fighter in the welterweight division. He has proven that time and time again. So, to be the best, I have to beat Georges. I feel like I did the right thing in waiting for Georges,” revealed Condit at a press conference today promoting UFC 154.

As far as his November 17 effort against St-Pierre, Condit stated he wasn’t focused on any particular flaws in his foe’s skills but rather set on entering the bout as prepared as possible in every facet of the sport.

“I think a lot of Georges opponents in the past looked at Georges and said this is where he’s weak, this is where I can beat him; that was a mistake. Georges is truly the best fighter in the world and that is not the approach I am taking,” explained Condit. “My approach is to be the best I can be.”

Dan Hardy vs. Rory Markham is your knockout of the week

Dan Hardy usually fights well in his home country of England. For example, check out what he did to Rory Markham at UFC 95 in London.

On Saturday, he will fight Amir Sadollah in his hometown of Nottingham. He's gone 1-4 in his last five fights, but recaptured that knockout ability against Duane Ludwig in May. Will Hardy come up with another fine performance for the people of Nottingham? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Showboating amateur fighter gets knocked out (VIDEO)

Showboating can give a fight a little bit of personality, but there are times it goes wrong. At the Tuff 'n' Uff amateur MMA card on Sunday, Shai Lindsey raised his arms at Carlo Juinio in the Nick Diaz-ian, "Come at me, bro," gesture. Unfortunately for Lindsey, Juinio did as he requested.

By the end of the video, Lindsey is sitting up and on a stool. The only lasting wound is on his pride.

A note to all fighters and future fighters out there: Only showboat if you're ready to accept the kick to the face it may inspire.

UFC ON FUEL 5 PREVIEW: Penick's main card fight picks for "Struve vs. Miocic" event in Nottingham

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_on_Fuel_5_poster_180_2.jpg
One of the positives for the UFC in being on Fuel TV is that it allows them to stage international shows that can air live in the U.S. On Spike TV, they were often forced to delay the broadcast of free cards until primetime, leading to viewer complaints and internet avoidance for fans who wished not to be spoiled.

On Fuel TV, however, they can run events in Sweden, the UK, even China, and fans who wish to see them live have the option to do so during the day due to the time difference. So it is with tomorrow's event in Nottingham; what is perhaps the best Fuel card to date top to bottom will air live in the middle of the day, so for those who wish to catch it live, they can (provided they have Fuel TV).

And with Saturday's card, there's plenty to catch, as the six-fight main card features a ton of entertaining matchups. Here are some quick thoughts on that main card, along with some predictions for those bouts.

Stefan Struve vs. Stipe Miocic (Heavyweight): Struve wasn't wrong this week when he said this fight won't go five rounds, and one of them is likely to finish it in impressive fashion in the first couple of rounds. Miocic had a rough start against Shane Del Rosario in his last bout, but he brutalized him on the ground in the second frame to take the win. Struve's long limbs work wonders with his submission game, but he hasn't fully been able to utilize his reach on the feet. Miocic hasn't lost a fight yet, so it's tough to say what his real weaknesses are into this one, but while he can connect on the feet and do damage on the ground, things could change it Struve puts him on his back. I think Struve's ground game will be superior here, and though he's just as capable of delivering a finishing blow on his feet, the submission game is his edge here. Struve by submission in the second round.

Dan Hardy vs. Amir Sadollah (Welterweight): Sadollah's win over DaMarques Johnson last March was a performance that seemed to indicate he was turning a corner as a fighter. Then, he got beat by Duane Ludwig in an uninspired performance and edged Jorge Lopez by split decision in an awful fight. Hardy finally bounced back from an awful string of losses in his last bout, knocking out the aforementioned Ludwig in a redemptive victory at UFC 146. Now, returning to fight in his hometown for the first time in years, Hardy will be out to finish Sadollah quickly. If he doesn't he'll be kept along the cage for three rounds en route to a decision loss. No one wants to see that, so let's go with the more exciting pick and Hardy by KO in the first round

Brad Pickett vs. Yves Jabouin (Bantamweight): This is sure to be a fast-paced, back and forth, entertaining bantamweight fight, and Pickett will have a raucous crowd cheering him on here. Though Pickett lost in convincing fashion against now-Interim Bantamweight Champ Renan Barao, he's still a premier talent in the division. Jabouin enters with an undefeated mark at 135 lbs., but this is a big step up for him as well. Pickett's simply the better fighter, and though Jabouin will get in some offense of his own, I like Pickett's overall game to take over, and he may even pull off another highlight reel submission. That's what I'll go with, Pickett by submission in the second round.

Paul Sass vs. Matt Wiman (Lightweight): Speaking of highlight reel submissions, if Paul Sass can pull off another one, this time against a man who has never been submitted in his career, that will be one insane statement. Wiman knows what Sass wants to do. Everyone knows what Sass wants to do. Still, it's been impossible to avoid for anyone who has faced him in the Octagon. Wiman's going to be confident in all aspects of his game, and he's probably not going to shy away from fighting on the ground with Sass. Whether that works for him or against him, it's probably going to be a struggle throughout. I can't bet against Sass at this point, not until someone proves they can avoid what they know is coming. Wiman might be that man, but until then, I'm taking Sass by submission in the first round.

John Hathaway vs. John Maguire (Welterweight): Hathaway's rise up the welterweight ranks came to a screeching halt when he ran up against a better grappler in Mike Pyle, and though he's added decision wins over Kris McCray and Pascal Krauss, he hasn't yet gotten back to the type of performances he had prior to the Pyle loss. Maguire, meanwhile, was very impressive with his win over DaMarques Johnson earlier this year. Though Hathaway is a step up in competition from that fight, this is still a winnable bout for Maguire, who hasn't loss since a 2010 decision against now UFC fighter Simeon Thoresen. This should be a competitive fight, but it's going to depend on how Hathaway looks as far as how tough an opponent he'll be. For now, I'm sticking with the theme of the night, with Maguire by second round submission winning out.

Che Mills vs. Duane "Bang" Ludwig (Welterweight): Mills got rag-dolled and beat up by Rory MacDonald in his last bout, but he's taking on the right level of competition in this matchup. Ludwig is going to stand and trade with Mills, and this fight will be about who lands first and who lands hardest. At this stage, Ludwig's chin is the bigger question mark, and Mills is a fighter who can test it. I'll take Mills by TKO in the second round.

Igor Pokrajac apologizes for criticism of Vinny Magalhaes' gameplan

In a fight where UFC light heavyweight Igor Pokrajac clearly had the advantage on the feet, and his opponent Vinny Magalhaes had a sizeable advantage on the ground, Pokrajac curiously made what turned out to be a fight-ending mistake. With Magalhaes pinned up against the cage in their UFC 152 meeting, early in the second round,  Pokrajac did the unthinkable and took the BJJ specialist down.

Within seconds, Magalhaes had framed up  Pokrajac’s arm, and it didn’t take long for the black belt and ADCC Champion to roll belly down to get the submission win. The second round only lasted 74 seconds, and at the end Pokrajac was writhing on the floor cradling his arm.

The frustrated Pokrajac recently took to Twitter to vent his frustrations, but he had a different angle on the fight than you might think, writing, “If I wanted to do a grappling match I would go on a grappling tournament , this is MMA and UFC fans want a fight.”

The fan reaction, as you can imagine, wasn’t very supportive of the way “The Duke” saw the fight. In fact, it was quite harsh. However, his opponent empathized with foe.

“I don’t think he should be saying that, because it would be the same as me getting knocked out and saying, ‘I didn’t sign up for a boxing match,’” said Magalhaes on MMAJunkie Radio. “I understand the guy, I’ve lost so many fights. People know that, and I would hate to be in his situation.”

Pokrajac has sinced apologized for his Twitter remarks, insisting he was just venting and spoke too quickly.

“Sorry to all MMA fans on my fast Tweet after the fight, was pissed off because of my mistake. I lost the fight. Vinny did his best . I don’t show anything I was prepared for, next fight I will do my best for all UFC and MMA fans. Thank you all on big support,” he posted.

Jon Jones will now fight Vitor Belfort at UFC 152

Remember how on that long ago, far away day of yesterday we heard UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones would face Lyoto Machida at UFC 152 instead of Dan Henderson at UFC 151? Hope you didn't start etching that fight card into stone, because MMA Junkie is reporting Jones will now face Vitor Belfort at UFC 152.

So in the past 24 hours:

1. Henderson had to pull out of the title bout with Jones. Though Jones was offered Chael Sonnen and Chris Weidman as late replacements, he turned them down and UFC 151 was canceled.
2. Instead, a rematch between Machida and Jones was scheduled. Their last bout was in December in Toronto, and Jones won by guillotine.
3. Machida turned down the fight. Considering his last fight was on Aug. 4, you could see why he wouldn't want to take on a five-round, championship fight on less than a month's notice.
4. Vitor Belfort, who was scheduled to fight Alan Belcher at UFC 153, will now move up to light heavyweight and fight Jones for the title at 152.

Got all that? Just be happy you're not responsible for continually redesigning the UFC's event posters.

Chris Leben’s year-long suspension has left him “flat-out broke”

Despite middleweight Chris Leben’s troubled career it’s easy to end up rooting for the hard-hitting brawler who first emerged in the UFC as a cast-member on the first season of TUF. From the beginning Leben has loved to entertain fans, taking to the Octagon with reckless abandon in hopes of leaving the crowd on their feet and his opponent on the canvas.

Over the years Leben has struggled with substance abuse with the latest incident costing him a year of his career after “The Crippler” tested positive for painkillers following a November 2011 fight. The situation has also been expensive based on the hit to Leben’s income.

“I’m flat-out broke right now,” Leben admitted in an interview with MMAMania. “Being broke sucks. It’s probably one of my biggest things where I just feel terrible. I feel terrible for having put my wife through so much and all because of the poor decisions that I’ve made. The year’s been hard. The year’s been a struggle.”

“The only thing I can say is it’s already happened. It’s water under the bridge,” Leben continued, trying to put a positive spin on his present circumstances. “The only thing I can do now is try to make sure it never happens again in the future and prepare for the future now.”

Leben will make his return to the ring on December 29 at UFC 155 where he’s set to face Karlos Vemola and will undoubtedly contend for Knockout of the Night honors.

Video: Bellator 74 headliner Lyman Good thankful for notable opponent in tourney opener

You might be tempted to question the wisdom of taking two of the biggest names from Bellator's Season 7 welterweight tournament and matching them in the opening round.

Why guarantee you eliminate one of the tourney's marketable fighters after just one round?

Lyman Good, the first-ever Bellator welterweight champ, doesn't really care. He's just happy to face a tough opponent like Jim Wallhead.

MMA Marketplace: Battle of the UFC 152 walkout shirts

It's time to break down UFC 152's main event via the most important factor: walkout shirts. Sure, Vitor Belfort is a historic underdog and is not expected to last long in the fight against UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, but what do the shirts say? Let's see.

On the left, Vitor Belfort's shirt by RVCA. It's available in green and white and you can buy it straight from RVCA for $29.95.

On the right, we have Jones' shirt ... maybe? Here's the deal. Jones is now sponsored by Nike, and he tweeted out this "Bones Knows" Nike shirt before UFC 151 was canceled. According to the tweet:

#Nike only made 80 signature T-shirts for UFC 151, I absolutely cannot wait to bless my fans, talk about #exclusive

So, there were only 80 shirts made, but it's not 100 percent clear on how to get them. Nike's online store doesn't have them or any mention of Jones. If you want to buy gear from Jones now, take a look at his UFC store online which has items from his last fight.

By virtue of pretty green color and the ease in buying the shirt, Belfort wins. Tune in Saturday to see if that pans out.

The Downes Side: UFC 152 Predictions

That’s right boys and girls, you shall wander in the darkness no longer because Danny Boy Downes is back with another edition of the Downes Side! A lot has happened since the last time we were together over a month ago: UFC 151 disappeared, main events have changed and Dr. Phil McGraw celebrated his 62nd birthday.

Even without Dr. Phil’s assistance, the show will go on and UFC 152 comes to the Air Canada Centre in Toronto Saturday night with  Benavidez vs. Johnson Jones vs. Machida 2 Jones vs. Belfort. The main event features fan favorite Jon Jones as he battles Vitor Belfort to keep his light heavyweight title. In the co-main event of the evening, Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson compete for the first ever UFC flyweight championship.

Cub Swanson (17-5) vs Charles Oliveira (16-2)
The main card kicks off in the featherweight division as Greg "Sport Killer" Jackson product Cub "KO of the Night" Swanson faces off against Brazilian submission ace Charles "Do Bronx" Oliveira. Finally able to avoid training camp injuries, Swanson has looked like a world beater in his last two TKO wins over George Roop and Ross Pearson. Oliveira also has also looked strong in his last two bouts, defeating Eric Wisely with a calf cutter in January and handing Jonathan Brookins his first-ever submission loss last June.

This boils down to whether or not Do Bronx can get this fight to the ground. Even though Swanson has only tapped out once since 2007, Oliveira’s grappling skills are on a whole different level. Unfortunately for the Sao Paulo native, he’ll be standing longer than people at the DMV line (that’s still topical right?). Thanks to his fan favorite coach, Swanson will be patient and tag Oliveira without committing too much to make himself vulnerable to the takedown. He’ll utilize straight punches and quick flurries to earn himself a decision win.

Matt Hamill (10-4) vs Roger Hollett (13-3)
Next we head to the light heavyweight division as Matt “The Hammer” Hamill takes on Roger “The Hulk” Hollett. After back to back losses to Rampage Jackson and Alexander Gustafsson, Hamill looks to get back in the win column after what has to qualify as the shortest retirement in UFC history. Hollett makes his UFC debut riding a five-fight win streak. An aggressive fighter, only four of his career fights have made it out of the first round.

Whenever a fighter has an extended layoff, you have to question their conditioning as “Cage Corrosion” is much more than the next YouTube sensation. Luckily for Hamill he’s making his return against someone whose wins have mostly come via submission. Hollett has never faced someone with the Hammer’s wrestling skills and won’t be able to get him in a vulnerable position to finish. Hamill will pin the "Hulk" up against the fence, finish the takedown and show everyone why he's the only man who's been able to defeat Jon Jones (too soon?). TKO in the 2nd.

Michael Bisping (23-4) vs Brian Stann (12-4)

We drop down to middleweight as “Likable” Michael Bisping looks to move another rung closer to the number-one contender spot against Brian “All-American” Stann. Despite a loss to Chael Sonnen in January, Bisping rides a lot of momentum into the fight. Speaking of momentum, Brian Stann has won four of his last five fights (finishing all of them) showcasing the power that has earned him nine career knockouts.

This is a clash of two very different strikers. Stann is a heavy-handed boxer who uses his brute strength and KO power to overwhelm opponents. A more technical kickboxer, Bisping throws more combos and doesn’t seek the big single KO punch. In the grappling department, Bisping gave Chael Sonnen (the best wrestler in the UFC) all he could handle. Stann doesn’t come anywhere close to that. After learning his lesson from the Dan Henderson fight, Bisping will avoid the big right hand, counter effectively and probably even work in a few takedowns of his own. Stann is not one to go away easily and will have flashes here and there of turning the tide, but it won’t be enough. The Count takes this one with 30-27s across the board. The performance won’t earn him a title shot, but his post fight interview will give Josh Koscheck a run for his money for the title of most beloved fighter.

Joseph Benavidez (16-2) vs Demetrious Johnson (15-2-1)

That brings us to the co-main event of the evening. After a slight delay caused by an Australian judge’s poor arithmetic, Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson will finally decide who becomes UFC flyweight champion. Undefeated against anyone not named Dominick Cruz, Benavidez may be known for his guillotine choke, but he's also shown knockout power, most recently in his semi-final match against Yasuhiro Urushitani. Johnson’s speed and workrate are what helped him earn a spot in the finals. His ability to transition from striking to takedowns has given all his opponents tremendous difficulty.

Both fighters are extremely well-rounded, but you have to give the edge to Benavidez in every department. He has the strength and wrestling to match Johnson grappling and holds a distinct power advantage in the striking department. The rounds will be fast-paced, entertaining and close, but Benavidez will be able to outland Johnson on the feet and negate his takedown attempts. If the flyweight division has shown us anything, it’s been that all of them are hard to put away...except this time. The fight will enter the championship rounds, Mighty Mouse will get more desperate to get the finish and find himself in the aforementioned guillotine choke. Joe B. gets submission in the fourth and sets up Bisping/Benavidez match we’ve been waiting to see.

Jon Jones (16-1) vs Vitor Belfort (21-9)
Now time for the main event! Jon Jones has taken some heat lately for his actions outside the cage, but nobody can deny what he’s done inside it. “Bones” has shown why he’s one of the most dangerous strikers in MMA with dominant wins over names like Rashad Evans, Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida and Mauricio Rua. Looking to derail the hype train is the self-proclaimed “young dinosaur” Vitor Belfort. For someone who made his UFC debut in 1997, Belfort finds himself in the position to achieve the most important accomplishment of his entire career.

Even considering Belfort makes the jump to light heavyweight for the first time in years, “The Phenom” still possesses knockout power. That being said, Jones never seems to put himself in vulnerable positions on the feet. Vitor will make it out of the first round, but he’ll push too hard for the big shot, Jones will counter him and that’ll be the end of it. After rolling through Vitor, no one knows what’ll be next for the 25 year old champ, but one thing’s for sure -- people will have plenty to say about it.

Well that wraps up another much anticipated edition of the Downes Side. Be sure to follow me on twitter @dannyboydownes and check out some of my other writing here. Also, be sure to leave your queries, comments and list other things you’ve been longing to tell me during my absence.

Demetrious Johnson reflects on making history at UFC 152 with flyweight title win

During Demetrious Johnson’s win over Joseph Benavidez at UFC 152 it became apparent Johnson had a speed advantage over his adversary. In fact, even commentator Joe Rogan mentioned the story of the fight was the speed of Johnson, a notion “Mighty Mouse was quick to agree with as well when asked about the co-headlining clash.

“When Joseph starts to duck his head a little bit at me, I can tell that he’s about to throw that overhand right. There were a couple of times where I actually stayed in the pocket, and I blocked it just by raising my hand up because it’s such a wild punch,” Johnson told Sherdog. “It’s not coming straight down the pipe, so you can get away with having your arms wide out. It worked out to my advantage. You could see them coming because Joseph likes to bury his feet and duck his head when he throws.”

Johnson continued by saying the Benavidez fight went exactly the way he thought it would, explaining, “Joseph Benavidez is a tough competitor. He likes to throw those big haymakers, and when I watched the fight, I thought I did a great job making him miss a whole lot. I wish I could have stayed in the pocket a little more to make him pay for missing. He missed a lot of shots and he got away with just missing.”

The Split Decision win over Benavidez resulted in the 26-year old becoming the UFC’s first flyweight champion. Despite the closeness of the scorecards, one of the few times Johnson was really in trouble came in the fourth round when Benavidez mounted him with a Guillotine Choke sunk in. Still, Johnson said he never panicked and felt comfortable the entire time.

“It was nowhere near close,” revealed Johnson. “The choke was a good application around my neck, but other than that, I was nowhere near close to going out. We trained that a lot at AMC. I mean, for 10 weeks straight. There’s been a couple of times during training camp where I almost bit through my lip because guys were trying to crank on it.”

Johnson concluded by saying he was unsure how the judges were going to score it before Bruce Buffer announced the results, but he personally felt like he’d won the fight. Upon second review he still feels the same way.

“When you look at mixed martial arts, you look at every aspect of the game. I felt that I won every aspect. The stand-up, I felt that I had the cleaner strikes, the better counterattacks. Takedown defense, I think I defended the majority of his takedowns. He dropped me once, but I recovered. I defended all of his submission attempts. I took him down multiple times, had a couple of good slams in there,” said the proud member of UFC history. “When you look on paper, I felt that I won that fight. It looks like the judges got it right.”

Joey Beltran booked for bout with Anthony Perosh at UFC on FX 6

The UFC has announced Anthony Perosh will take on Joey Beltran at UFC on FX 6. The show is set to take place on December 15 in Queensland, Australia and features Rousimar Palhares-Hector Lombard in the main event.

Beltran (14-8) will be out to get back into the win column after losing a unanimous decision to James Te Huna in July. “The Mexicutioner” was cut after suffering a knockout loss Lavar Johnson as a heavyweight, but the fan-favorite was brought back after slimming down to light heavyweight and picking up a win outside of the organization. Beltran could be fighting for his job at the event as well, dropping five of his last six contests despite employing an entertaining style inside the ring.

When he steps into the Octagon Perosh (13-7) will be looking to rebound from his UFC 149 loss to Ryan Jimmo. Like Beltran, the Aussie has had several fights at heavyweight but won’t be going back up for this bout.  He has finished all of the opponents he’s beaten including nine by way of submission, a stark contrast to the strike-centric Beltran.

Other fights scheduled for UFC on FX 6 include a bout between TUF: Australia vs. UK coaches George Sotiropoulos-Ross Pearson as well as the final from the reality show’s ongoing run.

Facebook and Twitter feed anxiety, study finds

Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter feed anxiety and make people feel inadequate, a study has found.

By Laura Donnelly, Health Correspondent

A poll of those using the technology found more than half of those surveyed said the sites had changed their behaviour - and half of those said their lives had been altered for the worse.
Most commonly, those who suffered a negative impact from social media said their confidence fell after comparing their own achievements to those of friends online.
Two-thirds said they found it hard to relax completely or to sleep after spending time on the sites.
And one quarter of those polled said they had been left facing difficulties in their relationships or workplace after becoming confrontational online.
In total, 298 people were polled by Salford Business School at the University of Salford, for the charity Anxiety UK.

Of those, 53 per cent said the launch of social networking sites had changed their behaviour - and of those, 51 per cent said the impact had been negative.
The research also demonstrated the addictive powers of internet, with 55 per cent of people saying they felt "worried or uncomfortable" when they could not access their Facebook or email accounts.
More than 60 per cent of people said they felt compelled to turn off electronic gadgets in order to have a break, with one in three of those surveyed saying they switched the devices off several times each day.
The findings about behaviour changes after using social networking sites came from smaller in-depth research which was then carried out by Anxiety UK.
Nicky Lidbetter, the charity's chief executive said: "If you are predisposed to anxiety it seems that the pressures from technology act as a tipping point, making people feel more insecure and more overwhelmed."
She said the charity was surprised by the high proportion of people who found that the only way to ensure a break from the demands of their devices was to switch them off, as they were not capable of simply ignoring their mobile phones, BlackBerry devices and computers.
Dr Linda Blair, a clinical psychologist said many people suffered increased anxiety because they failed to take charge of the demands being placed on them.
She said: "I think one of the key things is that people have begun to behave as though technology is in control of them, instead of the other way round. We can switch the gadgets off but a lot of us have forgotten how to".
Last year, a global study found that turning off mobile phones, avoiding the internet and tuning out of the television and radio can leave people suffering from symptoms similar to those seen in drug addicts trying to go "cold turkey".
Scientists asked volunteers from 12 universities around the world to stay away from computers, mobile phones, iPods, television and radio for 24 hours.
They found that the participants began to develop symptoms typically seen in smokers attempting to give up. The majority of those who enrolled in the study failed to last the full 24 hours without demanding their gadgets back.

New UFC Flyweight Champ Demetrious Johnson admits he didn't execute as planned against Joseph Benavidez

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Demetrious_Johnson.jpg
"The gameplan was to use my speed, which is one of my greatest assets. Joseph, he throws big bombs, and when you throw big bombs, you have to swing your arms wild, and that's where you get that power. When people do that, they leave themselves open for a lot of big shots. That's one of the things that I didn't get to execute on: staying in the pocket. I made Joseph miss, but I wasn't able to make him pay for missing as much as I wanted to... When I fought Ian McCall, and when I fought Joseph Benavidez, you look at those guys' records, and these guys have only lost twice in their entire lives. And they're not even finishes. When you look at the guy, you think he's got heart, determination, and he's mentally focused. In order for this guy to get knocked out or finished, he's got to make a stupid mistake. When you've got the best guys in the world going after it, there's no room for error, and we're not going to go out there and make an error because we're not stupid. So that's basically what you see."

-New UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson talks to MMAJunkie.com about his gameplan against Joseph Benavidez at UFC 152, and addresses the criticisms of Saturday's fight.

Penick's Analysis: My main issue with Johnson's performance in the fight is exactly what he addressed here, the fact that he didn't execute and make Benavidez pay for missing. Avoidance is one thing, but there needs to be offense delivered as well, and Johnson himself realized that he didn't do enough of that. That's one of the main reasons there are a lot of critics of Dominick Cruz, and it's something that Johnson now faces. Johnson's not wrong about why a fight like Saturday's will play out the way it did, and it's definitely a fair point. But that competitiveness and mistake-free mindset can often lead to some duller fights. That's one of the reasons Georges St-Pierre has been criticized in the last several years, and it's going to continue to be an issue for many fans in fights like that one on Saturday.

Gilbert Melendez injury causes Strikeforce to cancel Saturday’s card

Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez was hit with an injury just a week before he was scheduled to fight Pat Healy. He had to withdraw from the fight. Without Healy-Melendez, Showtime decided not to air the card. Without Showtime, Strikeforce canceled the event.

"When Showtime informed us that it would not be airing the event, we made the difficult decision to cancel Saturday's card in Sacramento," Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said via press release. "Without a television partner, we simply could not move forward with this event. We wish Gilbert a speedy recovery and will work diligently and quickly to reschedule the fighters affected by this news on upcoming cards."

This is the second major injury to hit Strikeforce recently. UFC heavyweight Frank Mir pulled out of his Nov. 3 bout with Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champ Daniel Cormier with an injury.

Healy told Bloody Elbow Radio that he was told he would not be fighting again until Melendez is healthy, and that he wasn't given the option to fight someone else.

"I'm like in a daze, still. I have to think about, if Gil's going to be out six months and I have to wait the whole time, I have to start making some plans to make money right now so I'm not in a situation where I have to make money right before training for a fight," Healy said.

Outside of Melendez Healy, Saturday's card featured:

• Guto Inocente vs. Gian Villante
• Caros Fodor vs. Josh Thomson
• Adriano Martins vs. Isaac Vallie-Flagg
• Quinn Mulhern vs. Jorge Santiago
• Jorge Gurgel vs. Mizuto Hirota
• Amanda Nunes vs. Cat Zingano
• Mike Kyle vs. Dion Staring
• Nah-Shon Burrell vs. Yuri Villefort
• Michael Bravo vs. Estevan Payan

Those fighters didn't create enough firepower for Showtime. Perhaps a re-airing of the "Weeds" season finale will be enough for the network instead of a live sporting event.

This creates a problem for the Strikeforce fighters on the card. One of the complaints heard most often from Strikeforce fighters is that they don't fight enough. In 2012, Strikeforce has held just five fight events. With such infrequency, fighters have few chances to fight and make money from their fight purse and sponsors.

Outside the main event, Strikeforce has nine fights place. Though there is room on the Nov. 3 card, it won't be enough to accommodate every fighter. Plus, the fighters thought they were getting paid on Sept. 29, and best case scenario has them getting paid a month from now. Fighting is never an easy way to make a living, but cancelling cards in the last minute makes the job much harder.

UFC looking to have Lyoto Machida duel Dan Henderson for contendership claim

It appears the UFC has a solution for the logjam created light heavyweight Dan Henderson’s recent injury and Lyoto Machida’s refusal to face champion Jon Jones without a full camp to prepare. Rather than force one of the two top contenders to wait for six months before receiving a title-shot, it looks like the organization has designs on having them fight each other in a bout eliminating one from the equation.

UFC President Dana White hinted at the plan during a gathering with media at the UFC offices in Las Vegas, though nothing official has been announced at this point.

Machida’s Camp Discusses Possibility of Fighting Again in a Non-Title Bout

“He should have taken the fight,” said White of Machida’s decision to turn down a short notice meeting with Jones. “We’ve seen it, history always repeats itself. Look how long it took Rashad Evans to fight for the title again. So you wanted to fight Jon Jones, you climbed up to the title fight and you don’t take it.”

“Now you’re fighting (expletive) Dan Henderson,” he continued. “Now you might not even get to the (expletive) title again. You lose to Dan Henderson, you’re not anywhere near Jon Jones.”

MMAWeekly was on hand and kind enough to transcribe White’s comments.

While some fans may feel making the two tussle is unfair after having already been promised a crack at the divisional championship, in reality Machida is only a single win removed from his submission loss to Jones while Henderson hasn’t fought since November. However, both are former champions with past success against some of the sport’s elite, combining for wins over the likes of Evans, Fedor Emelianenko, Mauricio Rua, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Wanderlei Silva, Rich Franklin, and Randy Couture.

Chris Weidman’s reaction to the Anderson Silva-Stephan Bonnar match-up

Chris Weidman is at the front of the line of middleweights clamoring for a bout with Anderson Silva. His undefeated record and recent knockout of Mark Munoz makes him a good candidate for Silva's next title bout. However, Silva wasn't interested in a bout with Weidman. Instead of Silva, Weidman will fight Tim Boetsch at UFC 155.

So what was Weidman's reaction when Silva instead chose to fight light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar in a non-title bout at UFC 153?

Yep, that about sums it up.

“We wanted to make a show that would take the action and drama of Die Hard and The Expendables and combine it with the reality of Cops,” said John Stevens ZOO Productions co-founder and Executive Producer on The Z Team. “REELZ knows the world of movies and entertainment better than any network and they are the perfect partner to make The Z Team come to life.”

Adds Lorenzo Lamas, “Ever since Renegade, my fans and I have been waiting for the right opportunity to take on the next challenge in the world of law enforcement. The Z Team is it – and the group of characters I have assembled is like no other. The best part is we get to take our skills as trained performers and apply them to real life situations. What people will see on this show is like nothing else on television today.”

Lorenzo Lamas, veteran of over 70 movie and TV roles was nominated for a Golden Globe for his work on Falcon Crest and is the only actor who appeared in all 228 episodes. Leandro Issa and Soo Chul Kim fighting for bantamweight belt at ONE FC: Rise of the Kings

It was announced today that Leandro Issa and Soo Chul Kim will meet for the second time on at ONE FC: Rise of the Kings October 6 with the bantamweight belt on the line.

Issa, from Brazil, is 10-2 overall and has won his last seven fights while Kim, a Korean, is 6-4 and is coming off two very impressive wins of his own.

At just 20-years old, Kim is one of the best prospects in Asia and really showed his potential when he knocked out Sengoku and Pancrase veteran Shoku Sato in the fourth round of their fight at Road FC 8.

He followed that up with another impressive win over URCC champion Kevin Belingon at ONE FC: Pride of a Nation which catapulted him into title contention.

Issa has long been expected to challenge for the bantamweight belt as he has won back to back decisions over Kim last September and Japanese veteran Masakazu Imanari in June. He is a BJJ black belt and a member of the fight team at the world renowned Evolve MMA camp in Singapore.

Interestingly the first time they fought Kim finished very strongly and was extremely aggressive in the final round. With the title match set for five rounds this could be a factor in his favor and he also showcased some impressive stamina in the win over Belingon.

The last time they met Issa was able to rough Kim up with knees and elbows on the ground but, to his frustration, could not find a submission finish despite getting in some good positions. The Brazilian will want to win more decisively this time around while Kim feels he came close enough to winning the first fight to be confident that with another year’s training under his belt he will be good enough to walk away with the belt after the rematch.

ONE FC: ‘Rise of the Kings’ is taking place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on October 6th. For more information visit: www.onefc.com.
