Alistair Overeems hopes of becoming UFC champion will have to wait, as The Reem has been relegated to the back of the bus once again.
Overeem, a former Strikeforce and K-1 champion, was originally scheduled to take on UFC titleholder Junior dos Santos this May, though an abnormal T/E ratio dashed those hopes and the Dutchman was subsequently unable to file a new application with the Nevada State Athletic Commission until late December.
Since the initial ruling by the NSAC, Overeem and Dos Santos have traded words in the media and the champion had, for a time, set aside a pivotal rematch with former champion Cain Velasquez and instead campaigned for a bout against Overeem.
Though UFC President Dana White was intrigued by the buddig rivalry, Dos Santos will still have to take on the No. 1 contender in Velasquez first.
White confirmed plans of a Dos Santos-Velasquez rematch following last nights UFC 150 event in Denver, Colorado with MMAJunkie.com, and the bout will headline the UFC year-end show in Las Vegas on December 29th.
Velasquez and Dos Santos first clashed last November for the UFCs first-show on FOX. The Brazilian banger floored Velasquez with a right hook and finished him off with ground-and-pound blows in less than two-minutes into the opening round.
Since that time, Dos Santos has successfully defended the title by knocking out former champion Frank Mir while Velasquez has gotten back to his winning ways, topping Strikeforce import Antonio Big Foot Silva with a hellish barrage of fists to face this May.
As for Overeem, he will have to re-apply for his license with the NSAC before the year is out, and only then will he be eligible to fight, which means we likely wont see the PRIDE veteran till early 2013.
