TUF 15 winner Michael Chiesa colliding with Rafaello Oliveira at UFC on FOX 5

Few, if any, stories from the long-running Ultimate Fighter franchise have elicited as many good feelings as that of recent winner Michael Chiesa. The 24-year old Chiesa, whose positive attitude and work ethic were infectious in themselves, suffered the loss of his father hours after being admitted into the house with an elimination-round victory. The death would prove to be an incredible source of motivation for the “Maverick” who found his way by beating every opponent he faced including Al Iaquinta this past June to claim the seasonal crown.

Chiesa won’t be getting any kind of break, however, as the bearded brawler has been booked against 15-5 Rafaello Oliveira at UFC on FOX 5. Officials have confirmed the match-up.

The Seattle-bound event will mark a homecoming of sorts for the 8-0 Chiesa who hails from Spokane, Washington. Six of his wins have come by way of submission including the opening round triumph he scored against Iaquinta.

Oliveira is also coming off an instance of summer success, scoring a decision over Yoislandy Izquierdo at UFC 148. He also holds a victory over John Gunderson inside the Octagon.

UFC on FOX 5 is headlined by a lightweight title-fight between champion Benson Henderson and surging contender Nate Diaz.

Tribute to the REAL men of MMA

With all these sissy wanna be warriors like Jon Jones and Machida ducking left and right, I needed to go back and reassure myself that there was real men in the sport, so instead of being negative I'll look at the positive and salute these fine gentleman who never back down from a challenge. Feel free to add to this list as I'm sure I'm forgeting LOADS of real dudes.

I appologize in advance to Ninjashoes if the weight of balls and fortitude in this thread causes the server to crash.

Vitor Belfort - took a fight with Bones on 30 days notice. Tried to take a fight with Fedor when Juicy Josh Barnett pissed hot and killed an organization, despite Fedor being the #1 HW and Vitor competing at 185lbs at the time.

Chuck Liddell - Was entitled to a shot against Tito Ortiz (who ducked him like crazy), but stepped aside temporarily so the UFC could make the Tito/Shamrock megafight. Invaded Pride and brutally KO'd Mezger and Overeem.

Wanderlei Silva - Took a fight with HW Mark Hunt on 2 day's notice after Sakuraba had to drop out of their fight. Hunt was 60lbs heavier and a terrible matchup stylistically for Wandy but he took it anyway.

Danny Castillo - not the most exciting guy but I don't think he has had a UFC fight that wasn't short notice yet.

And a shout out to all the other fighters who fought injured or on short notice, who didn't need 3 months of training to step in a fight a guy.

Lyoto Machida’s team addresses Jon Jones’ comments about fighter’s drawing power

When UFC light heavyweight title-holder Jon Jones was recently asked about the prospect of possibly fighting Lyoto Machida a second time, as will be the case if “Bones” gets by Dan Henderson at UFC 151, the 25-year old champion showed minimal interest in the match-up rather than excitement about taking one of the division’s toughest tests a second time. According to Jones, his main source of opposition to the pairing has to do with the low PPV numbers his December dance with Machida drew and the negative impact in had on his income.

Machida’s camp has since responded to the matter, pointing out some key figures while expressing their disappointment in Jones’ attitude.

“Dragon” Reacts to Earning Top Contendership at 205 Pounds

In a rare bit of online news from UFC Tonight, manager Ed Soares explained that international PPVs generally draw 30% less buys than domestic cards meaning it may not have necessarily been Machida’s fault the show didn’t do as well as others have. He also pointed to Machida’s knockout of Ryan Bader on FOX in August increasing fans’ desire to see “The Dragon” fight, also adding Machida’s respectful attitude may have hurt the buy-rate as well when compared to trash-talkers like Quinton Jackson and Rashad Evans.

Fortunately for Machida, Jones not only has a difficult draw ahead of him in Henderson but also isn’t the UFC matchmaker.

Stephen Thompson taking on Besam Yousef at UFC 154

The official lineup for UFC 154 is starting to take shape for the Octagon’s return to Montreal after the organization added a third welterweight bout to the card. According to an official announcement on UFC Tonight, Stephen Thompson and Besam Yousef have agreed to fight at the November 17 event.

Thompson (6-1) exploded on the UFC scene with a head kick knockout  over Dan Stittgen at UFC 143. Nicknamed “Wonderboy”, the undefeated kickboxing champion also stepped up to face Matt Brown on short notice and turned in an extremely entertaining effort despite ultimately ending up on the wrong side of a decision against his vastly more experienced adversary.

Meanwhile, the Swedish-born Yousef (6-1) was undefeated coming into the UFC when he faced Simeon Thoresen earlier this year but lost by way of submission. After having taken out five of his first six opponents by stoppage in his home country, UFC 154 marks the first time Yousef will be fighting off of Swedish soil.

The evening’s main event will feature the return of of UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre (22-2) after being out for more than a year due to injury-related issues. GSP is set to take on Carlos Condit, the division’s interim title-holder, in hopes of unifying the belts.

UFC 154 odds: Champ Georges St-Pierre opens as -350 favorite over Carlos Condit

Questions may linger about UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre surgically repaired knee, but to the folks who put their money where their mouths are, it's apparently not an overriding concern.

With recent clearance to resume full training for his return to the cage, St-Pierre is now expected to meet interim champ Carlos Condit at UFC 154 in November.

And noted oddsmaker Joey Oddessa recently set St-Pierre as a -350 favorite.

Bellator 73: 167,000 viewer average

MMA Junkie reports that the Bellator Summer Series finale earned an average rating of 167,000 viewers.  Bellator 73’s rating brought the summer average to 180,000 viewers.

This summer’s season series is lower than last summer’s 229,000 viewer average.  The ratings for this past Friday’s event was lower than Bellator 72’s 193,000 average.

Payout Perspective:

Bellator has just one more season on MTV2 before the much-anticipated move to Spike TV.  The ratings have dipped for the Summer Series although I’m sure the main emphasis is to continue to promote Bellator through the network transition.

Michael Bisping "puzzled" by Jon Jones' decision to turn down Chael Sonnen fight

The opinions on UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones’ decision to turn down a last-second scrap with Chael Sonnen have been plentiful considering the fallout involved including the cancellation of an entire event. However, few people are in a better position to address the matter than middleweight Michael Bisping who agreed to face Sonnen on equally short notice and under more difficult circumstances, as the similarly-sized Sonnen was actually preparing for a fight rather than coming off his couch.

Bisping opened up about the situation on this week’s episode of Ultimate Insider where he avoided taking any personal shots at Jones for his handling of things but disagreed nonetheless.

“I have no problem with Jon Jones. Jon Jones is a fantastic fighter, but I think the sign of a true champion is stepping up,” stated Bisping. “You could say this is an easier fight than Dan Henderson. So I for one am quite puzzled as to why he wouldn’t take the fight.”

Henderson was originally slated as Jones’ opponent but withdrew as the result of a torn MCL. Ultimately “Bones” was booked against Vitor Belfort for a September 22 meeting, ironically fighting on the same card as Bisping (who will meet Brian Stann).

Bisping’s Take on Stann

Rumor: Dan Henderson out of UFC 151?

http://www.bjpenn.com/mmanews/2012/0...+NEWS+BLOGS%29

Yesterday, the twitter universe exploded with speculation that light heavyweight #1 contender Dan Henderson was injured and could possibly be forced out of his scheduled title fight at UFC 151. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but that hasn’t stopped MMA media or officials from addressing the situation.

UFC announcer Kenny Florian was one of the first to address the rumor via twitter:

Hearing that we may have some disappointed @ufc fans soon due to some unfortunate circumstances for an upcoming card.

— Kenny Florian (@kennyflorian) August 23, 2012

When rumors of a possible injury caught fire, Dan Henderson took to twitter to put to rest any further speculation by thanking a group of training partners for a great workout.

Just got done with a great training session with the boys. @cyrillediabate @tarecfighter @heathslims @rfbjj @rockholdmma

— Dan Henderson (@danhendo) August 23, 2012

Just as everyone began to breathe easy, the plot thickened. One of the training partners that Dan Henderson had mentioned training with, Tarec Saffiedine, tweeted that he hadn’t seen Henderson since his fight for Strikeforce last week and that he hoped the injury rumor wasn’t true.

@mathawryluk94 havent seen him since my fight. Idk, hope its not true!!

— Tarec Saffiedine (@tarecfighter) August 23, 2012

A strange tweet from Tarec to say the least, considering he was apparently at a training session with Hendo yesterday evening.

Sources have confirmed that Dan Henderson indeed injured his knee grappling over a week ago. On August 12th coach Ricardo Feliciano tweeted a picture of Dan sparring with Luke Rockhold, where it appears that Dan was wearing a brace on his right knee.

One thing is certain, with only 2 weeks to go until UFC 151, a Henderson injury would all but completely destroy the card. If the rumor is true the UFC would have few options to go with. One option would be Lyoto Machida, who is already guaranteed himself a title shot with an impressive KO of Ryan Bader at UFC on Fox 4. The former champ came out of that fight unscathed. Another option, which would be a far stretch, but would surely increase ticket sales and PPV buys is Chael Sonnen. The former middleweight top contender has been talking trash to Jones for the past couple of weeks.

Is the MMA legend really injured? Will he be able to fight Jones at UFC 151? Only time will tell.

Dennis Bermudez is Unstoppable: The UFC 150 Preliminary Card Rundown

It was a record-setting preliminary card for UFC 150, with history made in the speed and ferocity with which leather was thrown.  In the bantamweight division, a Greg Jackson-trained fighter won big, while an Octagon newcomer dominated.  And in the featherweight division, a TUF 14 star shined, while a former lightweight found that he should've been fighting other 145-pounders all along.

[Related: Erik Perez scores fastest KO in bantamweight history]

  • In the first fight of the evening, Japanese veteran Eiji Mitsuoka and Nik Lentz met in the cage for a featherweight contest that saw the American dominate Mitsuoka with wrestling from beginning to end.  In his first fight at 145 pounds, Lentz was strong — way stronger than his opponent — and Mitsuoka had no answer for the takedowns and throws that put him on the mat.  The end came when Lentz maneuvered onto Mitsuoka's back, flattened him out, and unloaded a barrage of fists that forced the referee to step in at 3:45 of Round One.

  • It was all about momentum in the bantamweight pairing between TUF 14 veteran Dustin Pague and Octagon rookie Chico Camus, and though Pague was dangerous early on with a first-round triangle choke that his foe had to work to avoid, Camus slowly but surely gathered steam with escapes and ground and pound.  This went on for all three rounds, and by the time the clock was ticking down to zero, Camus was in mount and back-mount and Pague was completely on the defensive.  Camus took the well-earned unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28).

  • Bantamweight fireball Erik Perez walked right through Ken Stone, striding boldly into their first and only exchange and dropping Stone with a right hook that had the Massachusetts-born fighter eating canvas.  Perez followed him down and kept punching, and when Stone went rigid referee Herb Dean jumped in.  Stone was so dazed that when Perez relented and turned away, he tried to keep fighting, and Dean had to physically restrain him while Perez celebrated.  At a mere 17 seconds, Perez was the owner of the fastest knockout (a TKO) in WEC and UFC bantamweight history.

  • Dutch judoka Michael Kuiper absolutely brutalized kickboxer Jared Hamman, even though his game plan seemed to involve a lot of strolling forward eating kicks and punches.  Fleet-footed and mobile, Hamman began strong.  But Kuiper buckled him with a leg-kick that seemed to incur lasting damage, and then came the punches that chipped away and chipped away until Hamman came to resemble an extra in "The Walking Dead".  The end came via TKO at 2:16 in Round Two, when Kuiper cracked Hamman and Hamman fell in a heap.
  • Things looked dire for Dennis Bermudez when Tommy Hayden nailed him with a knee and sent him stunned to the canvas, but the TUF 14 runner-up is apparently made of iron.  Recovering from the knee to the dome and then forced to wiggle out of a rear naked choke and slam his way out of an armbar attempt, Bermudez just couldn't be stopped, and he paid Hayden back with a crushing front kick to the chest and standing guillotine choke.  Hayden tapped out at 4:43 of the first round.

Police blotter: Chad Mendes charged, former Jackson’s fighter arrested

Police-related news in MMA to report:

-- UFC featherweight Chad Mendes was charged with simple battery for his role in a bar fight in Hanford, Calif. He is cooperating with the police, denies he was involved, and will be arraigned on Sept. 19. Mendes' last fight was a 31-second knockout of Cody McKenzie at UFC 148.

-- Willie Parks, a featherweight who once trained at Jackson's MMA and helped with their wrestling, is facing aggravated assault charges and was arrested by U.S. Marshals after allegedly beating his girlfriend so badly that she miscarried.

Officials from Jackson's MMA said they severed ties with Parks months ago. His last fight was a win in March.

Ben Henderson retains belt in controversial split decision: The UFC 150 Main Card Rundown

When they first met, they went the distance and the judges gave it to Benson Henderson.  But this time, when former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and reigning champ Henderson scrapped, it seemed just a little more clear-cut, and it appeared as if "The Answer" had done enough in their five rounds of hard-fought conflict to reclaim that precious belt that was once his.  But the judges — in their infinite wisdom, or lack thereof — disagreed.  That's the story of UFC 150's main event.  More after the jump.

  • The youngest man on the UFC's roster also just happens to possess a wicked body shot, as TUF veteran Justin Lawrence found out much to his dismay.  In the bout between 20-year-old striker Max Holloway and 22-year-old striker Lawrence, there was zero grappling on the ground and tons of lightning-quick exchanges on the feet, with both fighters dinging each other up throughout all of the first and most of the second round.  But Holloway was relentless in his pressure, and when he softened Lawrence up with a knee to the body, then followed it up with a pair of hooks to the ribs, Lawrence folded in pain against the cage.  The ensuing storm of punches had referee Josh Rosenthal stepping in and making the TKO official at 4:49 of Round 2.

  • Buddy Roberts established early on that standing and trading with him would be a very dangerous prospect — established with hard jabs, crosses and kicks that clearly hurt — so former middleweight contender Yushin Okami made every effort to make this match a ground war.  And he was successful, pulling Roberts down and punishing him with punches from back-mount at the end of the first round, and doing the same early on in the second.  The American had no answer for the predicament Okami put him in, and the referee was forced to end it at 3:05 of the round, giving the Japanese fighter the win via TKO.

  • For some odd reason, Ed Herman felt that his best chance at beating Jake Shields was to pretend the walls of the Octagon were a giant cheese grater and the former Strikeforce champ was a piece of cheese.  That was the uneventful story of Round 1, and Shields avoided being the cheese in Round 2 by taking the TUF runner-up down and trying to methodically jiu-jitsu him to death.  The third round was pretty much the same as the second, and though it was the furthest thing from an exciting, crowd-pleasing battle, for Shields, it got the job done.  He took the unanimous decision (29-29, 30-27, 30-27) when time ran out.

  • It was quick, but damn was it fun.  In the lightweight co-main event between former teammates Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard, Cerrone came out full of confidence and walked into a left hook that had him stumbling and in grave danger of going to sleep.  But even though Guillard pursued him and tried to land the coup de grace, Cerrone recovered — at least, well enough to clip the "Young Assassin" with a high-kick and finish him with a devastating right.  Guillard was out cold at 1:16 of the first round, and while it lasted, this one was a thriller.

  • Whenever Henderson and Edgar fight, they're destined to go five rounds.  No ifs, ands or buts about it.  That's simply what they'll do.  Round 1 saw the former champ eating low-kicks to the calf that had him stumbling and falling, and though he scored a takedown in the late seconds of the frame, Edgar was caught in a tight guillotine.  He survived, and in Round 2, he dropped Henderson with a right and threatened with a guillotine of his own while sprawling away from the champ's takedown attempt.  With Henderson and Edgar picking and choosing their shots and neither really hurting the other, the third was extremely tough to score, but "The Answer" made it a little easier in the fourth by landing a takedown.  If we've learned anything from watching these two fight for so many rounds, it's that they'll never make it easy for the judges, and Round 5 was true to form, as both pecked at each other and neither took the definitive lead.  However, when it came to scoring, his unerring right hand seemed to be at least racking up points, it did seem like Edgar took the round  The end result?  A split decision (46-49, 48-47, 48-47) in favor of Henderson, who retained his belt but was showered by boos from a crowd that thought Edgar had deserved the "W."

Shinya Aoki scheduled for back-to-back fights under the ONE FC banner

Submission savant Shinya Aoki hasn’t taken to the cage since losing a strike-based stoppage to Eddie Alvarez in April. However, his lack of activity is certainly set to change in the immediate future after ONE FC confirmed Aoki would not only be competing later this month at ONE FC: Pride of a Nation but six weeks later at ONE FC: Rise of the Kings as well. The first bout will take place on August 31 with the follow-up performance on October 6.

No opponent has been announced for Aoki’s outing in a few weeks, though he is expected to face Arnaud Lepont in the second scrap. ONE FC CEO Victor Cui has confirmed both of the clashes.

Aoki holds an overall record of 30-6 with nineteen submissions to his credit. Among the individuals he’s taken out inside the ring are the likes of Alvarez, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Gesias Cavalcante, Joachim Hansen, and George Sotiropoulos. His loss to Alvarez a few months back snapped a seven-fight winning streak for the “Tobikan Judan”.

Other notable bouts pegged to take place at ONE FC: Pride of a Nation include Eric Kelly-Jens Pulver, Bibiano Fernandes-Gustavo Falciroli, and Andrei Arlovski-Tim Sylvia.

Jeff Hougland-Takeya Mizugaki, Yasuhiro Urushitani-John Lineker moved to UFC on Fuel 6

As the dust settles on the aftermath of the UFC 151 cancellation, the organization is tearing through the scrapped scraps and giving the fighters a handful of new assignments. The latest group of competitors receiving a new date/location are none other than Jeff Hougland (10-5), Takeya Mizugaki (15-7-2), John Lineker (19-6), and Yasuhiro Urushitani (19-5-6), as all four men will now be fighting on November 10 when the UFC heads overseas for their first show in China.

Hougland and former WEC contender Mizugaki were set to fight on the undercard of UFC 151 before the proverbial poo hit the fan. Hougland recently had a nine-fight winning streak snapped by Yves Jabouin, while Mizugaki has alternated between success and failure in his last ten tilts.

Meanwhile, the flyweight fight between Linekar-Urushitani was supposed to take place on the main card of the since axed event. Urushitani made his divisional debut in the UFC’s but lost the fight by TKO in the second round.  Likewise, Lineker was submitted in his 125-pound unveiling (though the fight was technically a catchweight bout since Lineker missed weight).

UFC on Fuel 6 is set to feature headlining action from Rich Franklin-Cung Le.

Jon Jones will now fight Vitor Belfort at UFC 152

Remember how on that long ago, far away day of yesterday we heard UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones would face Lyoto Machida at UFC 152 instead of Dan Henderson at UFC 151? Hope you didn't start etching that fight card into stone, because MMA Junkie is reporting Jones will now face Vitor Belfort at UFC 152.

So in the past 24 hours:

1. Henderson had to pull out of the title bout with Jones. Though Jones was offered Chael Sonnen and Chris Weidman as late replacements, he turned them down and UFC 151 was canceled.
2. Instead, a rematch between Machida and Jones was scheduled. Their last bout was in December in Toronto, and Jones won by guillotine.
3. Machida turned down the fight. Considering his last fight was on Aug. 4, you could see why he wouldn't want to take on a five-round, championship fight on less than a month's notice.
4. Vitor Belfort, who was scheduled to fight Alan Belcher at UFC 153, will now move up to light heavyweight and fight Jones for the title at 152.

Got all that? Just be happy you're not responsible for continually redesigning the UFC's event posters.

Vlad Matyushenko matched with Matt Hamill at UFC 152

The UFC has announced an injury to Roger Hollett has forced the newcomer out of a planned pairing with Matt Hamill in front of his fellow Canadians at UFC 152. Fortunately, it looks like the organization has already found a more-than adequate replacement for Hollett in the form of seasoned veteran Vladimir Matyushenko.

UFC officials confirmed the September 22 showdown earlier today, adding it to a lineup already featuring fights between Michael Bisping-Brian Stann and Joseph Benavidez-Demetrious Johnson.

Matyushenko holds an overall record of 26-6 including sixteen stoppages and wins over the likes of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Tim Boetsch. However, he has been out of action since a December loss to Alexander Gustafsson and will be looking to shake off some ring-rust against Hamill, who himself has also been sidelined for an extended period of time.

Hamill Elaborates on Decision to Retire

The 10-4 Hamill decided to call it a career after his last fight, also a 2011 stumble against Gustafsson, but got the itch to return to competition and build on a record already featuring success against the likes of Keith Jardine and Tito Ortiz.

Shes the ones who dropped down from 145 to fight smaller women not Cyborg. As much as I dislike Cyborg for juicing I just cant stand Rhonda and her big mouth. She acts like she grew up in a trailer park or something. So if youre so bad go back up in weight and Cyborg will knock your fucking face in. Youre a one trick pony not everyone is gonna let you arm bar them and you cant punch for shit. Its pretty bad when people hate you so bad they want Cyborg to win but alot of people do. alot of people really dont like Rhonda big fat mouth Rousey.

Tom DeBlass vs. Riki Fukuda on tap for UFC on Fuel 6

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

A middleweight bout between Riki Fukuda and Tom DeBlass is headed to UFC on Fuel 6 in Macau, according to a report from TheScore.com.

DeBlass makes his middleweight debut in the bout, and hopes to rebound from the first loss in his career. That came by majority decision against Cyrille Diabate in his UFC debut in June, snapping a seven fight win streak to begin his career.

Fukuda has gone just 1-2 in his UFC run, but the two losses came by decision, including a very controversial loss to Nick Ring in his debut.

So long Tito the fighter - Hello Tito the manager

Quote:

Aug 22, 2012 - During his storied career, Tito Ortiz was notorious for publicly and privately butting heads with his bosses. There was the time he and Dana White were set to box each other to settle their differences. There were several prolonged and bitter contract negotiations. Ortiz famously once wore a T-shirt to a UFC weigh-in that read "Dana Is My B----."

In recent years though, it's been relatively peaceful. Ortiz chalked up the newly harmonious relationship to a changed outlook on life. That might be put to the test in short order, as the two might be battling it out again in the executive boardroom. Recently retired from fighting after a 15-year career, Ortiz has formed a new business venture that will represent athletes and entertainers.

The new company, Primetime 360 Entertainment & Sports Management, is headed by Ortiz and his longtime business partner, attorney George Prajin.

Prajin was formerly a record company executive, according to a bio on the website of his law firm, Lopez & Prajin.

Primetime 360 has already inked its first clients. Among them are former Strikeforce featherweight champion Cris Cyborg, who is currently serving a suspension for a positive steroid test, but is still the subject of many headlines for her ongoing rivalry with bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey.

The company will be based in Ortiz's longtime hometown of Huntington Beach, Calif., and plans to represent athletes as well as artists working in music, film and television.

The 37-year-old Ortiz ended his active fight days following a July 7 loss to Forrest Griffin, completing his career with a record of 16-11-1. He still holds the record for most consecutive defenses of the UFC light heavyweight championship with five.

UFC 150 Preview: The Main Card Breakdown

Because the area was a lawless wasteland, the first two UFCs ever were held in Denver, Colorado.  It was an interesting time back then in the winter of 1993: as a chill hung over the McNichols Sports Arena, within a sumo wrestler was literally getting his teeth kicked out while a bunch of other combat sports newbies were huffing and puffing and on the verge of altitude sickness.  Denver, you see, is so far above sea level that flying birds are in danger of inadvertently leaving Earth's atmosphere.  The UFC has returned to the area many times since, and on Saturday night will be holding UFC 150 there.  So who on the main card will be fully acclimated to the thin air and who will look like they're suffering from asthma?  Here's a breakdown of the fights to tell you that very thing!

[Listen: Benson Henderson talks with Ariel Helwani about the rematch]

  • Benson Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar — Edgar became the UFC's lightweight champ after he went five rounds with B.J. Penn.  Then he fought Penn for five rounds again, fought Gray Maynard a couple times for a total of nine rounds, and faced former WEC star Henderson, who took the belt from him after another protracted five-round war.  To say that Edgar spends a lot of time in the Octagon is an understatement.  It would be more accurate to say that he lives in the Octagon, and that UFC president Dana White has often floated the idea of charging the New Jersey-based fighter rent.  Unless he can nail a guillotine choke, Henderson is pretty much a decision-type guy as well, so what this one boils down to is who made the best adjustments from their last fight.  Has Edgar trained to avoid those up-kicks that wrecked his nose (an injury that required surgery and forced the postponement of this rematch earlier in the year)?  Will Henderson continue to throw kicks that Edgar catches and use the opportunity to punch him repeatedly in the face while Edgar stands there holding his leg (which happened last time)?  If adjustments have been made, I can see the "Answer" racking up enough points to take the decision over "Smooth".  Either way, though, this one is going the distance.  Oh, and both men will be in great shape.
  • Don Cerrone vs. Melvin Guillard — When it comes to knocking people out, lightweight "The Ultimate Fighter — Season Two" veteran Guillard is king.  Unfortunately, when it comes to defending submissions, the "Young Assassin" is like a knave or squire, or perhaps even just a scullery maid.  But fear not!  For although former WEC star Cerrone is great at grappling, he's also great at standing and banging — which is hopefully what we'll get for at least the first few minutes of this co-main event hoedown.  Granted, once things get too hairy for him on the feet, "Cowboy" can flip the switch, take things horizontal and tap Guillard out, but we should at least get some fireworks.  I'm picking Cerrone to win this one via choke, hopefully later rather than sooner.

[Related: Old pals Cerrone, Guillard won't hold back one bit]

  • Jake Shields vs. Ed Herman — Middleweight jiu-jitsu expert Shields ruled Strikeforce with an iron fist, even handling Dan Henderson like he was nothing in his last fight with the organization.  But since crossing over to the UFC, Shields' performances can best be summed up by the word "meh".  TUF 3 runner-up Herman's career has been a mixed bag of dominant wins and crushing defeats, yet he's a gamer, and if he can prevent Shields from getting him down, he can clinch his way to a decision.  That's not going to happen, as Shield will get him down and tie him in knots, but hey, if Herman was going to win, that's how he'd do it.
  • Yushin Okami vs. Buddy Roberts — Former middleweight contender Okami didn't look so hot against champ Anderson Silva, and when he took on Tim Boetsch at UFC 144, he was dominant until Boetsch said "Enough of this crap!" and simply beat him unconscious.  Replacing Rousimar Palhares as Okami's dance partner is Roberts, who had a less-than-inspiring UFC debut back in June and who's clearly taking a big step up in competition with this match-up.  Look, I'm not going to pretend that Roberts has the chops to beat Okami if Okami is sharp and "in the zone", but if the Japanese fighter is truly riding a fast train to Suckville, losing to the Greg Jackson-trained young buck would likely mean the end of him in the Octagon.  I predict Okami takes this one by getting Roberts down and pounding on him. And if doesn't… see ya, "Thunder".

[Related: Cagewriter breaks down all the fights on the undercard]

  • Justin Lawrence vs. Max Holloway — Okay, okay, Lawrence looked extremely impressive earning a win via knockout at the TUF 15 finale, but does that mean we should have a TUFer on the main card of a pay-per-view event so soon after his respective season?  Anyway, Lawrence can strike pretty well, and his opponent — Hawaii native Holloway — hasn't really made an impact in two UFC appearances (he lost handily to Dustin Poirier and decisioned Pat Schilling), so this bout is either going to be quick and violent or it's going to make you call your cable company and say you ordered this UFC by mistake.  I'm leaning towards the former, with Lawrence emerging victorious.

Couture "Enjoying the Ride" in Retirement

UFC Hall of Famer Randy CoutureUFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture may have retired from professional fighting in 2011, but the five-time champion hasn’t exactly been sitting in a rocking chair to pass the time. He runs one of the world’s largest MMA fight gyms in Las Vegas, is mentoring his son’s own burgeoning fight career, and is starring in the summer blockbuster film The Expendables 2, which opens today, August 17th.

When Couture is at home in Vegas he likes to take a hands-on approach with his gym, the sprawling Xtreme Couture MMA facility. “I’m here every day when I’m in Vegas,” he tells UFC.com. “I’m here every day, working out. Still training, working with the guys. Obviously, I travel a lot but I have a great staff that takes care of everything and allows me to go make a movie or do the other stuff that I’m doing.”

Xtreme Couture MMA includes a who’s who stable of elite fighters and Randy still enjoys helping those that ask for his assistance with their fight preparation.

“I do it on more of an individual basis,” he explains, as opposed to teaching structured classes. “Those individuals that come to me and say, ‘hey, can you help me with this,’ or ‘What do you think about this opponent, how should I approach this,’ I’ll work with.

“I’ve always liked coaching. I’ve been coaching longer than I’ve been fighting, at the collegiate level in wrestling. It’s rewarding and fun.”

With Couture’s 40 years of wrestling and 14 years of championship-level MMA experience, the process is no doubt rewarding and enriching for his fighters as well.

As for the acting career that often keeps him running to Los Angeles and remote shooting locations, Couture says that he never expected his life to go in this direction, but he is enjoying it.

“The acting thing has kind of come out of the blue for me,” he says. “It wasn’t something I ever aspired to, but it has been a nice surprise. Right from the start, with the first movie I was a part of, I became immediately intrigued by the process of making a movie. So I immediately started taking acting classes and started to learn more about movies, paying attention on set and going and hanging around the directors.”

Given his interest in the intricacies of film-making, Randy admits that he would relish the opportunity to direct or produce movies in the future. “I get a clear vision in my head when I read a script of how a movie is going to go and look, and that seems to be a part of what the directors I’ve seen in action have to do,” he says. “I’d love to get the opportunity to do that some day.”

For now, Couture is enjoying being on set as a fellow actor with movie legends and stars like Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Jet Li and many more from the action movie dream team ensemble cast of The Expendables movie series.

“We had a blast,” Randy says. “Jason [Statham] is a great guy, Jet Li is a great guy. All of them were really nice to me. We had a lot of fun just hanging out on the set. Especially me, Terry [Crews] and Dolph [Lundgren]. We kind of developed a rapport. We were in a lot of scenes together and we did a lot of stuff together.”

Couture says that of all his fellow Expendables castmates, former professional wrestling mega star Steve Austin was the biggest MMA fan. “Stone Cold” played a villainous henchman in the first Expendables movie and had an on-screen battle with Couture, but when the cameras were off all he wanted to do was talk MMA with Randy.

“Steve is a huge fight fan,” Couture says. “All the guys seemed to think MMA and boxing were cool but Steve knew things inside and out – stats from every single guy in the UFC, things like that. I rode in the van with him a bunch and we had some scenes together in the movie and he asked a ton of questions. It was fun.”

Couture loves making movies, but emphasizes that it is still work, “a grind,” that can often entail 14-16 hour days, six days a week. Because of this, he never minds being back home in the gym, training and working in the business that made him famous.

It also helps that he’s got his son, Strikeforce lightweight fighter Ryan Couture, in the gym with him, working on his own career. “We’re in the same environment, we are striving for the same things,” Randy says. “He studies all the fighters just like I do, and we talk about all those things. In a lot of ways we’re wired a lot alike.”

Couture says he doesn’t stress out about his son fighting for a living because he sees how well he prepares and because he knows that Ryan loves doing it. Randy also says that he only tries to help as much as he’s asked, and not to loom larger than he has to in his son’s career.

“I try to stay out of the way as much as possible,” he says. “It’s already a burden dragging around the last name. In some ways it slapped a target on him from the jump. He takes all that in stride.

“I don’t try to impart anything [to him]. I always try to lead by example, so I’ve tried to do things as best as I could and in some ways he’s followed that example. If he asks me questions I share my experiences with him. Especially in his last two fights, which were steps up in competition, he’s wanted me to get involved in developing a game plan and all those sorts of things.”

Couture seems relaxed and at peace sitting in his office discussing his life, post-fighting, and he doesn’t seem to have any angst about his decision to retire and stay retired. Much of that peace seems to be connected to what he calls a second chance to get a close relationship with his son Ryan. The pitch in his voice rises and he beams when he talks about working and living near his son again.

“It is very cool. There’s a block of time there in junior high and high school, after the divorce, where I didn’t get to spend as much time with him, so now I to get to have him here in Vegas and to be a part of what he’s doing and what he’s trying to accomplish,” Randy says.

“I’m kind of making up for some lost time in a lot of ways. Most people don’t get that opportunity but I’ve been fortunate to have him as close as I get to have him to me right now, at this stage of his life. I’m just enjoying the ride.”

Jose Aldo anxious to see Frankie Edgar at featherweight, then send him packing

The names Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar have been linked together for the past year-plus based on the public’s demand to see “The Answer” drop down to 145 pounds in hopes of him facing the UFC’s dynamic featherweight champion. However, Edgar has been hesitant to make the move despite criticism he is too small for the lightweight division, though the former title-holder softened on his stance recently in the wake of a loss to Benson Henderson.

Aldo, apparently, has grown tired of the discussion and is hoping Edgar finally commits to a featherweight run this time around so both men can move forward in their careers.

“He said he wants to drop to the featherweight so I’m hoping he does that to end this story,” said Aldo in an interview with TATAME, including a bit of a warning along with his invitation as well. “He’s welcome here so that we shut him off and he goes to the lightweight or bantamweight classes.”

Edgar, who lost to Henderson earlier this month, has said he plans to take some time off to emotionally disconnect from the defeat before making a decision on his next move. Meanwhile, Aldo is expected to face Erik Koch in October at UFC 153.
