Few, if any, stories from the long-running Ultimate Fighter franchise have elicited as many good feelings as that of recent winner Michael Chiesa. The 24-year old Chiesa, whose positive attitude and work ethic were infectious in themselves, suffered the loss of his father hours after being admitted into the house with an elimination-round victory. The death would prove to be an incredible source of motivation for the “Maverick” who found his way by beating every opponent he faced including Al Iaquinta this past June to claim the seasonal crown.
Chiesa won’t be getting any kind of break, however, as the bearded brawler has been booked against 15-5 Rafaello Oliveira at UFC on FOX 5. Officials have confirmed the match-up.
The Seattle-bound event will mark a homecoming of sorts for the 8-0 Chiesa who hails from Spokane, Washington. Six of his wins have come by way of submission including the opening round triumph he scored against Iaquinta.
Oliveira is also coming off an instance of summer success, scoring a decision over Yoislandy Izquierdo at UFC 148. He also holds a victory over John Gunderson inside the Octagon.
UFC on FOX 5 is headlined by a lightweight title-fight between champion Benson Henderson and surging contender Nate Diaz.

The lineups for TNA house shows seem to reveal two title changes that may go down at No Surrender.
The lineup for the company’s September 23rd show in Springfield, Illinois lists Austin Aries as the X-Division champion and Winter as the Knockouts champion, leading to believe that they will get the belts tonight or at one of the next two Impacts.

When UFC light heavyweight title-holder Jon Jones was recently asked about the prospect of possibly fighting Lyoto Machida a second time, as will be the case if “Bones” gets by Dan Henderson at UFC 151, the 25-year old champion showed minimal interest in the match-up rather than excitement about taking one of the division’s toughest tests a second time. According to Jones, his main source of opposition to the pairing has to do with the low PPV numbers his December dance with Machida drew and the negative impact in had on his income.
Machida’s camp has since responded to the matter, pointing out some key figures while expressing their disappointment in Jones’ attitude.
“Dragon” Reacts to Earning Top Contendership at 205 Pounds
In a rare bit of online news from UFC Tonight, manager Ed Soares explained that international PPVs generally draw 30% less buys than domestic cards meaning it may not have necessarily been Machida’s fault the show didn’t do as well as others have. He also pointed to Machida’s knockout of Ryan Bader on FOX in August increasing fans’ desire to see “The Dragon” fight, also adding Machida’s respectful attitude may have hurt the buy-rate as well when compared to trash-talkers like Quinton Jackson and Rashad Evans.
Fortunately for Machida, Jones not only has a difficult draw ahead of him in Henderson but also isn’t the UFC matchmaker.

The official lineup for UFC 154 is starting to take shape for the Octagon’s return to Montreal after the organization added a third welterweight bout to the card. According to an official announcement on UFC Tonight, Stephen Thompson and Besam Yousef have agreed to fight at the November 17 event.
Thompson (6-1) exploded on the UFC scene with a head kick knockout over Dan Stittgen at UFC 143. Nicknamed “Wonderboy”, the undefeated kickboxing champion also stepped up to face Matt Brown on short notice and turned in an extremely entertaining effort despite ultimately ending up on the wrong side of a decision against his vastly more experienced adversary.
Meanwhile, the Swedish-born Yousef (6-1) was undefeated coming into the UFC when he faced Simeon Thoresen earlier this year but lost by way of submission. After having taken out five of his first six opponents by stoppage in his home country, UFC 154 marks the first time Yousef will be fighting off of Swedish soil.
The evening’s main event will feature the return of of UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre (22-2) after being out for more than a year due to injury-related issues. GSP is set to take on Carlos Condit, the division’s interim title-holder, in hopes of unifying the belts.

MMA Junkie reports that the Bellator Summer Series finale earned an average rating of 167,000 viewers. Bellator 73’s rating brought the summer average to 180,000 viewers.
This summer’s season series is lower than last summer’s 229,000 viewer average. The ratings for this past Friday’s event was lower than Bellator 72’s 193,000 average.
Payout Perspective:
Bellator has just one more season on MTV2 before the much-anticipated move to Spike TV. The ratings have dipped for the Summer Series although I’m sure the main emphasis is to continue to promote Bellator through the network transition.

The opinions on UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones’ decision to turn down a last-second scrap with Chael Sonnen have been plentiful considering the fallout involved including the cancellation of an entire event. However, few people are in a better position to address the matter than middleweight Michael Bisping who agreed to face Sonnen on equally short notice and under more difficult circumstances, as the similarly-sized Sonnen was actually preparing for a fight rather than coming off his couch.
Bisping opened up about the situation on this week’s episode of Ultimate Insider where he avoided taking any personal shots at Jones for his handling of things but disagreed nonetheless.
“I have no problem with Jon Jones. Jon Jones is a fantastic fighter, but I think the sign of a true champion is stepping up,” stated Bisping. “You could say this is an easier fight than Dan Henderson. So I for one am quite puzzled as to why he wouldn’t take the fight.”
Henderson was originally slated as Jones’ opponent but withdrew as the result of a torn MCL. Ultimately “Bones” was booked against Vitor Belfort for a September 22 meeting, ironically fighting on the same card as Bisping (who will meet Brian Stann).
The complete segment with Bisping can be seen below:

It was a record-setting preliminary card for UFC 150, with history made in the speed and ferocity with which leather was thrown. In the bantamweight division, a Greg Jackson-trained fighter won big, while an Octagon newcomer dominated. And in the featherweight division, a TUF 14 star shined, while a former lightweight found that he should've been fighting other 145-pounders all along.

Police-related news in MMA to report:
-- UFC featherweight Chad Mendes was charged with simple battery for his role in a bar fight in Hanford, Calif. He is cooperating with the police, denies he was involved, and will be arraigned on Sept. 19. Mendes' last fight was a 31-second knockout of Cody McKenzie at UFC 148.
-- Willie Parks, a featherweight who once trained at Jackson's MMA and helped with their wrestling, is facing aggravated assault charges and was arrested by U.S. Marshals after allegedly beating his girlfriend so badly that she miscarried.
Officials from Jackson's MMA said they severed ties with Parks months ago. His last fight was a win in March.

When they first met, they went the distance and the judges gave it to Benson Henderson. But this time, when former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and reigning champ Henderson scrapped, it seemed just a little more clear-cut, and it appeared as if "The Answer" had done enough in their five rounds of hard-fought conflict to reclaim that precious belt that was once his. But the judges — in their infinite wisdom, or lack thereof — disagreed. That's the story of UFC 150's main event. More after the jump.

Submission savant Shinya Aoki hasn’t taken to the cage since losing a strike-based stoppage to Eddie Alvarez in April. However, his lack of activity is certainly set to change in the immediate future after ONE FC confirmed Aoki would not only be competing later this month at ONE FC: Pride of a Nation but six weeks later at ONE FC: Rise of the Kings as well. The first bout will take place on August 31 with the follow-up performance on October 6.
No opponent has been announced for Aoki’s outing in a few weeks, though he is expected to face Arnaud Lepont in the second scrap. ONE FC CEO Victor Cui has confirmed both of the clashes.
Aoki holds an overall record of 30-6 with nineteen submissions to his credit. Among the individuals he’s taken out inside the ring are the likes of Alvarez, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Gesias Cavalcante, Joachim Hansen, and George Sotiropoulos. His loss to Alvarez a few months back snapped a seven-fight winning streak for the “Tobikan Judan”.

As the dust settles on the aftermath of the UFC 151 cancellation, the organization is tearing through the scrapped scraps and giving the fighters a handful of new assignments. The latest group of competitors receiving a new date/location are none other than Jeff Hougland (10-5), Takeya Mizugaki (15-7-2), John Lineker (19-6), and Yasuhiro Urushitani (19-5-6), as all four men will now be fighting on November 10 when the UFC heads overseas for their first show in China.
Hougland and former WEC contender Mizugaki were set to fight on the undercard of UFC 151 before the proverbial poo hit the fan. Hougland recently had a nine-fight winning streak snapped by Yves Jabouin, while Mizugaki has alternated between success and failure in his last ten tilts.
Meanwhile, the flyweight fight between Linekar-Urushitani was supposed to take place on the main card of the since axed event. Urushitani made his divisional debut in the UFC’s but lost the fight by TKO in the second round. Likewise, Lineker was submitted in his 125-pound unveiling (though the fight was technically a catchweight bout since Lineker missed weight).

Remember how on that long ago, far away day of yesterday we heard UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones would face Lyoto Machida at UFC 152 instead of Dan Henderson at UFC 151? Hope you didn't start etching that fight card into stone, because MMA Junkie is reporting Jones will now face Vitor Belfort at UFC 152.
So in the past 24 hours:
1. Henderson had to pull out of the title bout with Jones. Though Jones was offered Chael Sonnen and Chris Weidman as late replacements, he turned them down and UFC 151 was canceled.
2. Instead, a rematch between Machida and Jones was scheduled. Their last bout was in December in Toronto, and Jones won by guillotine.
3. Machida turned down the fight. Considering his last fight was on Aug. 4, you could see why he wouldn't want to take on a five-round, championship fight on less than a month's notice.
4. Vitor Belfort, who was scheduled to fight Alan Belcher at UFC 153, will now move up to light heavyweight and fight Jones for the title at 152.
Got all that? Just be happy you're not responsible for continually redesigning the UFC's event posters.

The UFC has announced an injury to Roger Hollett has forced the newcomer out of a planned pairing with Matt Hamill in front of his fellow Canadians at UFC 152. Fortunately, it looks like the organization has already found a more-than adequate replacement for Hollett in the form of seasoned veteran Vladimir Matyushenko.
UFC officials confirmed the September 22 showdown earlier today, adding it to a lineup already featuring fights between Michael Bisping-Brian Stann and Joseph Benavidez-Demetrious Johnson.
Matyushenko holds an overall record of 26-6 including sixteen stoppages and wins over the likes of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Tim Boetsch. However, he has been out of action since a December loss to Alexander Gustafsson and will be looking to shake off some ring-rust against Hamill, who himself has also been sidelined for an extended period of time.
Hamill Elaborates on Decision to Retire
The 10-4 Hamill decided to call it a career after his last fight, also a 2011 stumble against Gustafsson, but got the itch to return to competition and build on a record already featuring success against the likes of Keith Jardine and Tito Ortiz.

Aug 22, 2012 - During his storied career, Tito Ortiz was notorious for publicly and privately butting heads with his bosses. There was the time he and Dana White were set to box each other to settle their differences. There were several prolonged and bitter contract negotiations. Ortiz famously once wore a T-shirt to a UFC weigh-in that read "Dana Is My B----." In recent years though, it's been relatively peaceful. Ortiz chalked up the newly harmonious relationship to a changed outlook on life. That might be put to the test in short order, as the two might be battling it out again in the executive boardroom. Recently retired from fighting after a 15-year career, Ortiz has formed a new business venture that will represent athletes and entertainers. The new company, Primetime 360 Entertainment & Sports Management, is headed by Ortiz and his longtime business partner, attorney George Prajin. Prajin was formerly a record company executive, according to a bio on the website of his law firm, Lopez & Prajin. Primetime 360 has already inked its first clients. Among them are former Strikeforce featherweight champion Cris Cyborg, who is currently serving a suspension for a positive steroid test, but is still the subject of many headlines for her ongoing rivalry with bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey. The company will be based in Ortiz's longtime hometown of Huntington Beach, Calif., and plans to represent athletes as well as artists working in music, film and television. The 37-year-old Ortiz ended his active fight days following a July 7 loss to Forrest Griffin, completing his career with a record of 16-11-1. He still holds the record for most consecutive defenses of the UFC light heavyweight championship with five. |

Because the area was a lawless wasteland, the first two UFCs ever were held in Denver, Colorado. It was an interesting time back then in the winter of 1993: as a chill hung over the McNichols Sports Arena, within a sumo wrestler was literally getting his teeth kicked out while a bunch of other combat sports newbies were huffing and puffing and on the verge of altitude sickness. Denver, you see, is so far above sea level that flying birds are in danger of inadvertently leaving Earth's atmosphere. The UFC has returned to the area many times since, and on Saturday night will be holding UFC 150 there. So who on the main card will be fully acclimated to the thin air and who will look like they're suffering from asthma? Here's a breakdown of the fights to tell you that very thing!

The names Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar have been linked together for the past year-plus based on the public’s demand to see “The Answer” drop down to 145 pounds in hopes of him facing the UFC’s dynamic featherweight champion. However, Edgar has been hesitant to make the move despite criticism he is too small for the lightweight division, though the former title-holder softened on his stance recently in the wake of a loss to Benson Henderson.
Aldo, apparently, has grown tired of the discussion and is hoping Edgar finally commits to a featherweight run this time around so both men can move forward in their careers.
“He said he wants to drop to the featherweight so I’m hoping he does that to end this story,” said Aldo in an interview with TATAME, including a bit of a warning along with his invitation as well. “He’s welcome here so that we shut him off and he goes to the lightweight or bantamweight classes.”
Edgar, who lost to Henderson earlier this month, has said he plans to take some time off to emotionally disconnect from the defeat before making a decision on his next move. Meanwhile, Aldo is expected to face Erik Koch in October at UFC 153.
