Costa Philippou replaces injured Chris Weidman at UFC 155

The injury bug strikes again as a torn labrum has forced Chris Weidman to withdraw from his scheduled middleweight bout against Tim “The Barbarian” Boetsch at UFC 155.

UFC officials confirmed on Wednesday that Weidman will be replaced in the fight by his teammate Costa Philippou. Philippou (11-2) was scheduled to face Nick Ring at UFC 154 before the bout was cancelled after Ring fell ill. He will bring a four fight winning streak into the bout. He last competed at UFC 148 where he earned a unanimous decision win over Riki Fukuda.

Boetsch (16-4) is also riding a four fight winning streak which coincided with his move down a weight class to compete as middleweight. He most recently recorded a split decision win over the Hector Lombard at UFC 149. At UFC 144, Boetsch scored a stunning third round come-from-behind technical knockout win over former title challenger Yushin Okami.

UFC 156 will take place in Las Vegas on December 29th. The event will be headlined by a heavyweight title bout between champion Junior dos Santos and former champion Cain Velasquez.

Cesar Gracie says Anderson Silva camp ‘into’ Nick Diaz superfight

More so than most trainers, Cesar Gracie has a penchant for making headlines. The acclaimed Californian, head coach of Pleasant Hill's Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu fight team, carries with him a brash style that fits right along with his stable of fighters, infamously including both Nick and Nate Diaz, and past or present Strikeforce titleholders Jake Shields and Gilbert Melendez.

With such a talented roster of students, slow times are hard to come by for Gracie, and now is no exception. The younger Diaz brother, Nate, is just weeks away from challenging for the team's first UFC title. Likewise, Melendez is eyeing his own Octagon debut, Shields is in the midst of serving a six-month suspension, and the elder Diaz brother, Nick, is preparing to return from his own suspension, posturing for blockbuster bouts against the likes of Georges St-Pierre or Anderson Silva.

Nonetheless Gracie found the time to join our own Ariel Helwani on this week's edition of The MMA Hour, where the 209-trainer riffed on a variety of different subjects. The following are excerpts from the conversation.

On what fight interests Nick Diaz the most:

"We're pushing for the GSP fight. That's what we're going to push for, GSP or Anderson Silva. That's the two fights that interest us the most, and that's the one's we're going for.

"[Silva's] people are into it. We're into it. The fans, I think, would be into it. We've got convince Dana [White] about it now. Obviously the fight that makes sense to them, and I don't disagree, is Anderson-GSP, and like I said, I would watch that fight. That would be great to watch. But let's get real. If GSP just absolutely says no, then what? You can't make a guy fight. That's the thing. And Anderson, if they want to promote a superfight and if the stars align, I think Nick would be into it."

On Nick Diaz's next opponent:

"They asked me, [Josh] Koscheck or Demian Maia. I said probably Koscheck, more people have heard of him at 170. They're both really tough guys though. But ultimately, we want the bigger fights. I could see, maybe, Nick and [Johny] Hendricks would be interesting. That's what I'm thinking if they don't give him GSP, maybe a fight like that."

On the possibility Nick Diaz returns to an instant title shot:

"This is a weird game. It's up to the fans, really. I really believe it. Things change, rules change. You can't come of a loss and get a title fight, blah, blah, blah. And then all of a sudden you see Chael Sonnen, not only coming off a loss which wasn't controversial, like Nick's was pretty damn controversial. I think most people think he actually won that fight. The champions did. Anderson Silva, Chuck Liddell, all of these other people, the old-school guys, the new-school guys thought that Nick won that fight and they've told me that. But look, Chael Sonnen gets knocked out and he gets to go up in weight and fight for a title, and be in The Ultimate Fighter house and everything.

"What if Dana White can't make the GSP fight happen? Who knows? Fans demand Nick, and stuff happens all the time. You could see that fight happening. Don't shut the door on things."

On Nick Diaz's battles with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC):

"It's politics. These guys really don't like Nick. He doesn't kiss their butt. He speaks his mind and people don't like that. The NSAC wants to control you. They come on and they say, ‘We're doing this for the benefit of the fighters,' and that's a bunch of BS. They do everything for their benefit and they want to control fighters. They want to be in charge of the game. Nick is against that, he's not afraid to say he's against that, so they want him out. They don't want that guy fighting at all. If they could kill his career, they would."

On Nate Diaz moving out of his brother's shadow by winning a belt:

"No. 1, he's not in the shadow of Nick. It might be perceived that way by other people, we certainly don't perceive it that way here. And with Nate, he's said it before, if he was going to be in someone's shadow, what a better shadow to be under, really. Nick is a true fighter, he's a warrior that guy, and I think Nate is honored to try to live up to that kind of history, that kind of mentality."

On Diaz's opponent, Benson Henderson:

"He's very athletic. I think he has really good jiu-jitsu skills, he's unorthodox, and he gets away with a lot of stuff because of his athleticism. I don't think he's great at any one thing. I think what it is, is he's good at everything and he has the athleticism to make everything work."

On Henderson training to block out Diaz's trash talk:

"That's never a strategy of ours, it's just something that can happen. A lot of people talk trash in the cage, by the way. It's not super loud, you can't hear it. When they're up against the fence, they'll say stuff. But it's definitely not something we'll say, ‘Hey, you've got to get in his head. Talk trash to him.' It's not like that. I think if you're talking about with Nate Diaz, that just comes from his persona. He's fighting someone and he sees it as the same thing, almost, as being in a street fight."

On Georges St-Pierre vs. Carlos Condit:

"Both guys came to fight. Condit did too. I wish he would have came to fight to the [Nick] Diaz fight, but he didn't come to fight, Condit, because he knows he would have been knocked out."

If St-Pierre has a chance against Anderson Silva:

"No, I don't think [St-Pierre has a shot], and I'll tell you why. GSP, he's great at 170, I don't think he's the most durable guy as far as taking punishment. Most of his fights are not wars where he's getting hit a lot. He's such an athlete that he can really dominate people, but they're not like, ‘I hit you, you hit me,' in this back-and-forth game. He got hit that one time by Condit, and bam, he was on his butt.

"In terms of durability, Anderson Silva hits you, you're going to know it. And he's a lot bigger."

On Gilbert Melendez's UFC future if Nate Diaz is champion:

"We always have those discussions, we're a tight team and everything. Gilbert has brought up a few different things. No. 1, there's other great people he could fight at 155. The way we would do it is, hey, Nate's champ. And when he's not champ anymore, then bam, you're up there. That's how we do things. Jake and Nick had similar problems in various different organizations, and one guy would move up [a weight class] and one guy would move down, or they're just not going to fight each other.

"There's definitely a possibility he could go down to 145. He was the No. 1 guy at that weight for a long time. That's what people don't remember, back in the day when he was fighting Shooto and he was undefeated, he was just a phenomenal fighter. And that was actually at 143.9, the way the weight classes work in Japan. So I know he can make the weight. I don't think he likes making that weight, but that's the kind of commitment not to fight Nate."

On Jake Shield's mysterious failed drug test:

"Maybe he was hanging out with the Diaz's. (Laughs.)"

Demetrious Johnson, who was crowned the UFC's first-ever flyweight champion at September's UFC 152 event, will put his belt on the line against TUF 14 winner John Dodson. Gegard Mousasi wants UFC bout with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua

RuaShogun_Wide.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Gegard Mousasi is expected to face off against Mike Kyle on Strikeforce's January 12 event, but he's got his sights set a little further than that. With the January 12 card expected to be Strikeforce's final event, Mousasi wants to head to the UFC, and he's got an opponent in mind: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

"That would be a good fight," Mousasi said in an interview with FCFighter.com. "That would be an exciting fight. He's the kind of guy who likes to fight. I like to fight guys like him who come to fight instead of fight(ing) to win. I am 100 percent positive about my abilities to beat anybody. I don't doubt myself I just have to have my priorities right. I know I can beat anybody."

He's got to get past Kyle first, but he'll likely be a solid addition to the UFC's light heavyweight roster once Strikeforce folds and he heads to the Octagon.

Penick's Analysis: I don't know whether or not a fight with Rua is feasible as he heads to the UFC, but it could come eventually. It's a fight that definitely would be interesting, and the UFC would be able to sell it, but Mousasi might need to get a win in the UFC before they book him against a former champion.

Todd Duffee returns at UFC 155, takes on Phil De Fries

todd duffee Todd Duffee returns at UFC 155, takes on Phil De FriesAfter a two year absence heavyweight Todd Duffee is returning to the UFC. He is set to take on Phil De Fries at UFC 155 in Las Vegas on December 29th. The news was originally reported by the Las Vegas Sun on Wednesday and has been confirmed by the UFC.

Duffee (7-2) was considered a rising prospect in the UFC’s heavyweight ranks before he was released in 2010. He knocked out Tim Hague at UFC 102 which at that time improved his record to a perfect 6-0. At UFC 114 he was knocked out in the third round by Mike Russow in a fight that Duffee had been controlling.

Since his release from the UFC, Duffee has notched a 1-1 record. He suffered a first round knockout loss to Alistair Overeem at the year end Dynamite!! event in 2010. He has since rebounded from that loss to score a 0:34 knockout of Neil Grove at Super Fight League 2 in April.

De Fries (9-1) had been scheduled to face Matt Mitrione at UFC 155. However, that bout was scrapped when Mitrione was selected to replace injured Shane Carwin against Roy Nelson at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale. De Fries last fought at UFC on FX 4 where he submitted Oli Thompson by rear-naked choke in the first round. Eight of De Fries’ nine career wins have come by submission.

Urijah Faber returns against Vaughan Lee at UFC 156

http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2012/11/2...c-156-mma-news

The California Kid is reportedly set to return to action against English grappler Vaughan Lee.

Another fight has reportedly been added to the UFC's Super Bowl weekend show, and it marks the return of The California Kid. Former WEC featherweight champion and current top bantamweight Urijah Faber is set to take on Vaughan Lee according to Brazilian magazine Tatame.

Faber (26-6 MMA, 2-2 UFC) has competed at 135 lbs following Jose Aldo's destruction of him at "Aldo vs. Faber" for "The Featherweight Championship" back in April 2010. He started off well by submitting Takeya Mizugaki and getting a decision win over Eddie Wineland in his UFC debut. Faber was unable to defeat champion Dominick Cruz at UFC 132. He was supposed to get another crack at the belt (and his 3rd fight with Cruz overall), and he and Cruz were tabbed as coaches for the lone live season of The Ultimate Fighter. When Cruz bowed out with a torn ACL, Faber fought Renan Barao at UFC 149 for the interim title, which Barao took by unanimous decision. It's been over four years since Faber called himself a champion, going 0-5 in his last 5 title fights.

Lee (12-8-1, 1-2 UFC) has fought at bantamweight his entire career and entered the UFC unbeaten in his previous 5 fights. He lost a split decision to Chris Cariaso, but in Japan he pulled off the unique feat of submitting Kid Yamamoto at UFC 144. The success was short-lived as T.J. Dillashaw, a teammate of Faber's, dominated Lee in 2.5 minutes and forced him to tap with a neck crank. It marks the 5th time in 8 losses he's been submitted.

This is a mismatch and that's putting it kindly. Faber is still a high-level fighter and the odds of Lee being competitive with him are remote. It's a gigantic step up in competition for Lee and if he were to win this it'd already be marked as one of the biggest upsets of 2013.

No word on whether this will be on the PPV main card, but Faber is normally popular enough to merit that status so I'd say it will be.

More than two years after dropping his UFC debut, things haven't exactly gone David Mitchell's way.

Injuries, surgery and rehabilitation have left Mitchell out of action for more than 15 months - a streak he had hoped to end earlier this month.

Edwards vs. Stephens Back On for Dec. 8

After lightweight prospect John Cholish suffered a groin injury in training and was forced out of his December 8th bout against Yves Edwards, veteran 155-pounder Jeremy Stephens stepped up to fill in for Cholish in Seattle, thus getting another chance to face Edwards after their October bout in Minneapolis was scrapped on bout day.

Caraway Out, More Card Reshuffling in Seattle updated November 21
Bantamweight Mike Easton now has his third opponent for the December 8th event in Seattle. Bryan Caraway must withdraw from the bout due to injury; moving into that spot will be Raphael Assuncao. Both fighters have verbally agreed to the bout. Caraway had been tapped last month to replace the injured TJ Dillashaw.

Phan Replaces Injured Yagin Against Siver on Dec. 8 updated October 30
Following his August win over Cole Miller, veteran featherweight Nam Phan will return to the Octagon in Seattle on December 8 when he replaces the injured Eddie Yagin against Germany's Dennis Siver.

Caraway in for Dillashaw in Seattle updated October 30

Yves Edwards Gets Seattle Bout, Chiesa Gets New Opponent updated October 26
Two new lightweight bouts have been added to the UFC on FOX fight card taking place in Seattle December 8.

An injury has forced Rafaello Oliveira out of his planned bout, so TUF season winner and Washington state's Michael Chiesa has verbally agreed to take on Marcus LeVesseur, who's coming off a UFC on FX 5 win in his own hometown of Minneapolis.

Also at lightweight, dynamic striker Yves Edwards and submission specialist John Cholish will meet. Edwards was recently left all dressed up with no one to fight when he suited up for his planned UFC on FX 5 bout against Jeremy Stephens, who was unable to compete due to legal troubles.

Easton vs. Dillashaw heading to Seattle updated October 20
Rising bantamweight stars Mike "The Hulk" Easton and TJ Dillashaw will attempt to keep moving up the 135-pound ladder on Saturday, December 8th, as they collide in a Seattle bout verbally agreed to by both fighters.

Easton is currently riding an eight fight winning streak that includes three wins in the Octagon, and Dillashaw is coming off back to back victories over Walel Watson and Vaughan Lee.

TUF Winner Gets First Assignment; Siver-Yagin Rebooked
updated August 30
Verbal agreements are in for a trio of intriguing fights in the lighter weight classes for the Seattle UFC on FOX fight card.

The featherweight match-up between Dennis Siver and Eddie Yagin -- the last orphaned UFC 151 bout to be rescheduled -- now has a new home on the FOX 5 card taking place this December.

At lightweight, Ultimate Fighter Live winner Michael "Maverick" Chiesa will face Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Rafaello "Tractor" Oliveira in Chiesa's home state of Washington. Another Washington state fighter, John Albert, will face longtime veteran Scott Jorgensen in a bantamweight clash on that same night.

Surefire Fireworks Added to FOX Fight Card
updated August 27
UFC on FOX 5's stacked card has added even more star power, with heavyweight power punchers Lavar "Big" Johnson and Brendan "The Hybrid" Schaub verbally agreeing to fight December 8 in Seattle, Washington.

Verbals are also in for two of the most exciting fighters in the welterweight division to meet as Matt "The Immortal" Brown takes on Mike "Quick" Swick at that event.

In addition, two lightweight bouts originally booked for the cancelled UFC 151 have been bumped to the Seattle date: Daron Cruickshank vs. Henry Martinez and Tim Means vs. Abel Trujillo.

UFC on FOX 5 Location, Lightweight Bout Announced
updated August 21
The December UFC on FOX 5 event announced last week, which is set to feature a lightweight title fight between champion Benson Henderson and Nate Diaz, now has a confirmed venue. The December 8 televised event will take place December 8 at Seattle's Key Arena.

The news was first reported on FUEL TV's UFC Tonight.

Update:
A lightweight battle between Ultimate Fighter competitors has been verbally agreed to as TUF Live’s Joe Proctor will meet season 13 finalist Ramsey Nijem.

Henderson vs. Diaz to Headline UFC on FOX event in December updated August 15
December 8th's UFC on FOX event is shaping up to possibly be the best yet, as a lightweight championship bout between Benson Henderson and Nate Diaz headlines, supported by a light heavyweight showdown between Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Alexander Gustafsson, and the rescheduled welterweight bout between BJ Penn and Rory MacDonald.

More details on this event, including site, ticket on-sale date, and the fourth FOX televised bout, will be announced shortly.

Anderson Silva Doesn't Want Georges St-Pierre's Title

By Fightline, Sun, November 25, 2012
If a superfight between Georges St-Pierre (23-2) and Anderson Silva (33-4) were to take place, don't look for the welterweight championship to be up for grabs.

"Probably not, because I don't know how many times Anderson would actually defend it," said White, when asked if St-Pierre's title would be on the line.

St-Pierre made a successful return at UFC 154 in his home country to become the undisputed welterweight champion. It was his seventh title defense. Silva fought last month in a non-title fight, defeating Stephan Bonnar in the first round. He is undefeated in the UFC with 16 wins, ten of which were with his middleweight title at stake.

"It's more of a pound-for-pound, legacy-type fight. Also, fuckin polecrusher needs to shut his fuckin mouth coz he is fuckin lame" said White.

Silva has expressed interest in the fight, while St-Pierre is still pondering it. White hopes to have the fight in May 2013 at Cowboys Stadium or a soccer arena in Brazil.

Rumor - Diego vs Gomi for Fuel TV 8

Diego Sanchez hints at possible UFC on FUEL TV 8 bout with Takanori Gomi

Diego Sanchez (23-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC) may soon have his first fight in more than a year.

The UFC veteran today tweeted that he may fight fellow lightweight Takanori Gomi (34-8 MMA, 3-3 UFC) at UFC on FUEL TV 8 in Japan, assuming the Japanese fighter takes the bout.

UFC on FUEL TV 8 takes place March 3 at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Following Facebook prelims, the night's main card airs on FUEL TV (on March 2 in the U.S. due to the time difference).

UFC officials have announced nothing in regards to the potential Sanchez vs. Gomi fight, which likely would be part of the main card.

"Might have a fight lined up for march 2nd," wrote Sanchez, who's been on the mend following shoulder surgery. "Just waiting on the man Joe Silva to see if Mr. Fireball kid takes it?"

Earlier this year, Sanchez told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) he was considering a return to lightweight. Most recently he suffered a unanimous-decision loss to welterweight Jake Ellenberger at UFC on FUEL TV 1. Prior to the February defeat, he posted decision wins over Martin Kampmann and Paulo Thiago. He's won three straight "Fight of the Night" bonuses and five in his past seven fights.

Gomi, meanwhile, recently rebounded from a 1-3 skid that nearly cost him his UFC job. Back in February, he knocked out Eiji Mitsuoka, and earlier this month at UFC on FUEL TV 6, the former PRIDE champion picked up a narrow split-decision victory Mac Danzig that also nabbed him "Fight of the Night" honors.

"I would never duck anybody in the whole world. Trust me, I'm not scared to fight anybody. The fact is, I can't train. I haven't been able to train for this fight and I'm not going to fight people one-handed. I'd fight Lorenz Larkin any day, trust me. In my mind, that's easy money. I want to fight... I'm not trying to push my way into UFC like this. I want money. I'm watching my bank account go down, and I want to build it back up, so as soon as I can, I want to start fighting.

It does piss me off. You're saying I’m mentally weak or something like that? When I have ever shown signs of mental weakness in any of my fights? He might be 13-0 but we all heard him crying in his fight against [King] Mo [Lawal] the fight before last. I heard moans and cries. There's no point in coming at me, telling me I'm mentally weak and I'm reluctant to fight you. The guy needs to know his place. I think I've proved myself over the years. I'm ready to throw down with anybody."

-Strikeforce Middleweight Champ Luke Rockhold fires back at Lorenz Larkin during an interview on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, following a back and forth exchange on Twitter on Monday.

Penick's Analysis: Rockhold's showing little respect for Larkin, which will in turn garner a response, but this was facilitated by Strikeforce jumping the gun on announcing this fight. They had Larkin training for the fight under the auspices of it being signed, and had even announced the fight before tickets went on sale. That's poor business when Rockhold says he wasn't signed on for the fight and hadn't been training for it. This escalating beef is because of Strikeforce, yet it's now a fight that may not happen at all, because they'll enter the UFC likely in different spots in the pecking order later next year.
