UFC 147 Results: Rony Jason, Cezar Ferreira become first "Ultimate Fighter: Brazil" winners

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

TUF_Brazil_Logo_5.jpg
The first ever international season of The Ultimate Fighter came to a close on Saturday night, with winners being crowned in the featherweight and middleweight divisions from the first edition of "TUF: Brazil."

However, the show closed out with a bit of a whimper, with both finals bouts coming in as poorer fights than what their castmembers brought forth during the FX preliminary card for UFC 147. At the end of the night, it was Rony Jason and Cezar Ferreira walking away with the title of "Ultimate Fighter," along with a six-figure contract with the UFC.

Jason took a decision over Godofredo Pepey in a positively strange fight. Jason's striking wasn't immensely active, but he did more through three rounds than did Pepey. Additionally, Pepey attempted to pull guard numerous times despite not doing anything on the ground, and he also added several fouls during the fight that drew warnings, though no point deductions. Ultimately, Pepey didn't do nearly enough to avoid losing a decision to an emotional Jason.

Ferreira had a tougher time with replacement Sergio Moraes, who surprised him on the feet during numerous spots, giving him pause and changing the tide of the fight in moments. It wasn't enough, however, and Ferreira's superior striking game was enough for him to take the decision in the fight, along with the title of "Ultimate Fighter."

UFC on FX 4 Bonuses: Swanson, Miller, Stout, and Fisher earn extra $50,000

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_on_FX_4_poster_180_3.jpg
Four fighters earned an extra $50,000 for their efforts on Friday night in Atlantic City, as the UFC handed out bonuses in that amount to Cub Swanson, Dan Miller, Sam Stout, and Spencer Fisher.

Swanson took home the "Knockout of the Night" for his second round finish of Ross Pearson. The fight arguably should have been the "Fight of the Night" as well, as it was a fantastic fight between two evenly matched fighters, with both doing damage back and forth and landing several big strikes on one another. Swanson finally finished it with two rights and a follow up left hook late in the second round, sending Pearson down against the cage.

The actual "Fight of the Night" bonus went to Stout and Fisher for their three round trilogy bout. Stout earned his second win over Fisher, taking a unanimous decision in what appeared to be a much closer fight than the 30-27 scores suggested.

Finally, Miller took the night's "Submission of the Night" in his welterweight debut. He latched on a guillotine choke over Ricardo Funch in the third round of their bout, avoiding a potential decision loss and halting a two-fight losing streak.

UFC on FX Post-Fight Presser and Fight Night Bonus Recap

Seven fighters joined UFC® President Dana White at the UFC4 on FX post-fight press conference: Clay Guida, Brian Ebersole, Gray Maynard, Cub Swanson, Sam Stout, Dan Miller and Ricardo Lamas.

Submission of the Night went to Miller, who scored a third-round submission (via guillotine) of Ricardo Funch. Miller aggressively hunted for submissions throughout the fight, attempting several guillotines before securing the fight-ending choke late in the final frame. With the victory, Miller gets back in the win column after two consecutive losses.

Stout and Spencer fisher earned Fight of the Night for their trilogy bout. Like their previous two meetings, Stout and Fisher wasted little time exchanging strikes, as both men were bloodied early on. Stout utilized effective takedowns and ground control to earn a unanimous decision, which he dedicated to his late mentor, Shawn Tompkins.

Swanson received Knockout of the Night for his second-round finish of TUF alum Ross Pearson. In an exciting fight contested mostly on the feet, Swanson caught Pearson with a left hook buckled Pearson's legs.

Each bonused fighter received $50,000.

Strikeforce champ Rockhold has Kennedy plan, Jackson's 'form of cheating' on mind

Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold hopes Tim Kennedy will engage him in a high-paced fight when they meet next month at "Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy."

But he's also concerned that Kennedy is going to slow down the fight with a game plan from coach Greg Jackson.

"I'm not the biggest fan of Greg Jackson game plans," Rockhold said during a conference call in support of the July event. "It's mixed martial arts. I quit wrestling for a reason, so I want to fight, and I'm looking for a fight."

Dana White confirms UFC not interested in “retired” Fedor Emelianenko

Last week iconic Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko announced he was walking away from MMA after a twelve-year run in the ring. However, “The Last Emperor” also left the possibility of a comeback up in the air and simply pointed to time with his family as the driving force behind him hanging up his gloves, not a lack of desire or the ability to still compete at a high level.

Many felt Emelianenko’s actions might be a ploy to get him some time off while hopefully negotiating with the UFC as a means of closing out his career without an asterisk on it as someone who never set foot inside the Octagon. If that’s the case, unfortunately for Emelianenko’s camp, it appears they’re wasting their time because Dana White still isn’t interested in his services.

Emelianenko Leaving Future Up to “God’s Will”

White confirmed his organization will not pursue the 35-year old legend despite rumors to the contrary in a statement to The Underground.

Assuming he remains retired, Emelianenko will go down in history with a 34-4 record including wins over some of the sport’s top talent including Mirko Filipovic, Mark Coleman, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Gray Maynard: “The victory was important, but I like to fight.”

Last night UFC lightweight Gray Maynard picked up his first win inside the Octagon in nearly two years after fighting to a Draw with Frankie Edgar in early 2011 and then losing in the rematch nine months later. However, rather show than any real sense of relief, Maynard exited the ring with an obvious look of frustration on his face based on the way opponent Clay Guida approached their bout.

Guida, who has always been one of the sport’s more active fighters, opted to dance around throughout the bulk of their headlining bout at UFC on FX 4 rather than engage for more than a few seconds at a time.

The 11-1-1 Maynard addressed the issue in an interview with the UFC shortly after the conclusion of their bout where he pleaded his case in terms of the source of his aggravation.

“The victory was important, but I like to fight. I like to use my skills. I like to feel another person fighting,” explained the former title-contender. “And he came with a little plan, I guess. Some stick and move type stuff. And that’s cool. But you can’t move that much. You can’t turn your back and move away from me.”

“They were trying to take all the ‘chance’ away. You’ve gotta fight. You’ve gotta take chances, so you’ve gotta stay in the pocket a little bit and throw. They weren’t trying to give me a chance,” he concluded.

As far as his next fight, Maynard made it clear he’s still interested in a fourth go at Edgar to truly serve as a tiebreaker.

Check out the complete interview with Maynard below:

UFC 147 fight video highlights with Franklin-Silva, Werdum-Russow

UFC 147 is in the books, and FOX Sports has released video highlights from the event's two major matchups.

They include Rich Franklin's hard-fought, five-round unanimous-decision victory over Wanderlei Silva in the headliner.

Additionally, they include heavyweight Fabricio Werdum's quick TKO of Mike Russow in the event's other featured attraction.

Wanderlei in Brazil: Remembering the Old Days and Readying for War at UFC 147

UFC superstar Wanderlei SilvaIt was going to be so good. Wanderlei Silva vs. Vitor Belfort II. Nearly 14 years had not been long enough for Silva to get over the quick TKO loss to Belfort at Ultimate Brazil in 1998 and now he had a chance for revenge in his home country. And, oh yeah, Silva really does not like Belfort. He’s made that quite clear over the years and did so again when speaking with UFC.com about the Belfort rematch. The rivalry even grew over the course of the inaugural TUF Brazil season which they both coached.

But all that went away when Belfort broke his hand and was forced to pull out of the UFC 147 fight with Silva. Replacing Belfort against Silva this Saturday is former middleweight champion Rich Franklin. The fight will take place at a catchweight of 190 pounds.

The disappointment at losing the Silva/Belfort rematch was palpable in the fight world. Sure, Franklin is another former champ and future Hall of Famer. It is also true that Franklin/Silva is also a rematch that gives Silva a chance to even the score with “Ace” (Franklin won a decision over Silva in a Fight of The Night performance back at UFC 99), but would Wanderlei have the same fire against someone of whom he’s had nothing but positive things to say?

“I’m here to fight. With everybody. No matter who,” Silva says.

The succinct and chilling answer from Wanderlei should answer that. But really, this is something we all should have known about the fighter.

Silva has an uncanny ability to walk into the ring or Octagon all-smiles, only to have his visage darken moments later as he attacks his opponent with an unrelenting fury. While obviously not literally true, Silva’s nickname of “The Axe Murderer” has never really been considered hyperbole, at least in spirit.

The point is, Silva can turn that switch that flips him from perhaps the friendliest fighter in the UFC into a ruthless competitor. But how, exactly, does he do that?

“Man, I don’t know,” Silva wonders himself before pausing to think. “I’m a happy guy. When I see my opponent, though, when he is across from me, I’m ready. I take my job very seriously.”

More, perhaps, than reflexes, physical strength or skill, this innate ability to become instantly war-ready is invaluable to top athletes. It has to be part of the reason that Silva became such a dominant champion at 205 pounds in PRIDE despite being very undersized.

He is ferocious and he will have no problem unleashing that on Rich Franklin, even though he respects the American. Wanderlei loves the fight itself too much to do anything less.

It is, in large part, that love for battle that has kept Silva in the fight game for so long. He is only 35 years old, but has been in plenty of wars in training and nearly fifty career fights.

Wanderlei once went over four years and eighteen fights without a loss, but for the past six years, he’s lost more than he’s won, often by knockout. If he can get a homecoming win in Brazil, one imagines that it would be a perfect note for Wanderlei to go out on, that he’d then retire.

Though he admits to having begun to plan what he will do once he stops fighting, Silva is not ready to concede his career just yet. “I don’t know,” he says.

“I fight one fight after another, you know? I check my performance after the fight. If I’m fighting good, man, I can’t [stop]. I’ve got to check what’s going to happen. I have started to look for my next step in the sport, though.”'

That is a tough line for a fighter to toe, and Silva isn’t the first to do so. Someone as good as him can still pull off wins long after his prime has gone. But for now, Silva is hopeful that if he’s got more great wins in him, the next one comes in front of his countrymen at UFC 147.

A consummate performer, the emphasis for Silva really is on the “great,” and not quite as much on the “win,” part. Take, for example competitive decision losses like those he has taken at the hands of Franklin or Chuck Liddell. Wand still considers those types of bouts successes because they were exciting.

“Some fights that I’ve lost by decision, like with Franklin, with Chuck Liddell, man, I don’t feel bad,” he says. “I think, ‘man, this fight is going down in history, we’ve made the fans happy,’ and that’s the point of the fight.”

He’ll have a lot of fans in Brazil to make happy at UFC 147. The UFC is exploding in popularity in Brazil. Jose Aldo’s last UFC featherweight title defense was watched on television by nearly 100 million Brazilians, and Silva and Belfort’s TUF Brazil was watched every week by millions more.

Silva couldn’t be more excited. For the first time in seven years, he held part of his training camp in Brazil. He did part of his camp in his new home of Las Vegas in his Wand Gym, went a few hours west to his long-time coach Rafael Cordeiro at Kings MMA in California for another portion and then, with a month out before the fight, Wand returned to Brazil to train with another long-time coach, Andre Dida.

Wanderlei has been training with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and many other teammates from the Chute Boxe days. Silva says that connecting with his roots has felt great.

“I feel really good. I’m in my hometown, I eat the food from here, I train with the guys from here. I remember my old days. The quality of the guys here is so good, the guys train well, I am so happy,” he says.

As for the fight itself, Silva doesn’t get specific on predictions for how he will beat Franklin but he has the important stuff mapped out for June 23rd. It has been nearly 12 years since Silva has fought in his home country. Back then, he was fighting bare-knuckled and in obscurity.

At UFC 147 he will return as a superstar. He can envision that night clear as day.

“It’s been a long time that I haven’t fought here. I’m going to make the crowd very happy,” he says. “Everybody is going to cheer for me over here. I’m going to give the victory for all my fans around the world. For me, and for my fans.”

UFC on FX 4's Ricardo Lamas plans recovery from injury, welcomes international fight

A jiu-jitsu session with a 200-pound training partner left UFC on FX 4's Ricardo Lamas with a rib injury that largely prevented him from training three weeks before the event.

While it crossed his mind to withdraw from a fight with Hatsu Hioki, he ultimately decided against it.

"I was going to stick this out no matter what," Lamas on Monday told MMAjunkie.com Radio. "It was too good an opportunity for me. I just figured I would go out there and either come out with my shield or come out on my shield."

“I met with my surgeon today and she said everything is perfect,” she wrote. “There’s a little bit of fluid inside by the incision and where the repairs were done, but its totally normal apparently. The scar healed really good and there is no infection. So the surgery was a total success. I’m sooooooo happy!!!”

The former WWE Divas Champion last competed on the July 25 episode of RAW. She was advertised to compete in the following week’s No. 1 Contender’s Diva Battle Royal, but bowed out after determining days earlier that she would undergoing surgery.

Ronda Rousey and Sarah Kaufman’s bout now has a time and place

Ronda Rousey's first title defense is set. As reported by MMA Fighting, She will face Sarah Kaufman in San Diego on Aug. 18 in her first bout since winning the Strikeforce bantamweight championship from Miesha Tate in March.

Kaufman was expected to get the title shot before Rousey after beating Liz Carmouche last July. However, Rousey's string of fast armbar wins and her wise move of incessantly asking for the bout moved her to the head of line. Rousey won the belt with another armbar submission.

Now, she'll try to hold onto that belt in facing Kaufman, a tough striker with 10 of her 15 wins coming by knockout or TKO. Kaufman has just one loss on her record. She was submitted by former champion Marloes Coenen by an armbar, the exact move Rousey is so fond of. As an Olympic medalist in judo, Rousey knows how to employ armbars quickly. Four of her five wins came in under a minute.

Will Rousey hold onto her belt? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

The Zuffa Family’s Fighters

This should probably begin with a forewarning, I am in no way accusing Zuffa of nepotism by writing this article. Everyone knows, however, a UFC contract alone does not make you part of the Zuffa family. The nucleus of the “family” is made up of the familiar faces of UFC President Dana White, CEO/Owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, matchmakers Joe Silva and Sean Shelby, and to a lesser extent the known voices of the company Bruce Buffer, Joe Rogan, and Mike Goldberg.

There is, however, a list of fighters who have proven to be the promotion’s company men. This is a list of a few men who are consistently at the UFC’s beck and call for any situation, be it short-notice fights, media tours, or any of the other nuances that come with being a part of the world’s largest MMA entity. For the sake of fairness, current champions are excluded from the list.

Considering the fact that two men on this list just anchored UFC 147, now is an appropriate time to look at the peripheral members of the Zuffa family.

The Retirees

Chuck Liddell: Although retired, Chuck serves as the most prominent example of what it means to be “Dana’s boy.” Liddell, the former long-time light heavyweight king, ran roughshod through the division for years. There has not been, and will likely never be another man who did more for the promotion inside the cage. For his services, coupled with his background in business studies, Liddell was given a position as the Vice President of Business Development.

Kenny Florian: With Florian recently hanging it up, it came as no surprise that the lightweight, who stepped up in every capacity that he was needed, was given a position with the UFC. Ken Flo, who has long flexed his analyst chops in the booth, is now a permanent fixture for the promotion’s FX and Fuel TV offerings, as well as a panelist on their very own news show, UFC Tonight.

The TUF Bunch

Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar: These two are eternally linked by what many consider to be the most important fight in the history of the UFC. Their instant classic at the first Ultimate Fighter Finale catapulted the UFC into the mainstream. Dana White has admitted that they will always have a place in the UFC in some capacity. In a UFC 100 video blog, Stephan Bonnar stood against a wall, dejected, after having just dropped his fourth fight in a run of six. The president came up and patted him on the shoulder, congratulating him on a good fight, saying “You and Forrest are like my kids, you’ll always be with the UFC.” Both men have been given broadcasting roles outside of their fighting careers, to some degree, be it the occasional segment on UFC Tonight, or a slot on the broadcast team for shows on Fox’s various platforms in Bonnar’s case.

Josh Koscheck: While oft considered the most hated fighter today, it’s all marketing for Josh Koscheck. He’s comfortable playing that pro wrestling-esque heel role, and he’s damn good at it. Despite this, the NCAA wrestler is always willing to step up and take any challenge on short notice. Often controversial, Koscheck is extremely well spoken when he needs to be and is absolutely one of the premier hype men in the sport today. He has more than proven his loyalty to the promotion and will likely be blessed with some sort of position in the company once he calls it quits, likely in a similar capacity as Florian. The man was born for the spotlight and will hopefully be in front of the cameras when that day does come.

The Legacy Players

Rich Franklin: Yet another man who will do anything for the UFC, Rich Franklin most recently helped the company out by stepping in to face Wanderlei Silva at UFC 147. The long tenured Franklin is the promotion’s former middleweight champion, and has shown that he will compete anywhere and step up whenever the UFC calls. Prior to his rematch with “The Axe Murderer,” Franklin had once again stepped in on short notice to face Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 after Tito Ortiz was pulled from the bout with an injury. Franklin not only took the fight, but took over Ortiz’s coaching position on that season’s TUF. The fan-friendly “Ace” will surely be with the UFC in some capacity when the story of his career come to a close, likely in broadcasting.

Wanderlei Silva: Showing up as a bit of a surprise on this list is “The Axe Murderer”. While Silva spent the majority the of his career in PRIDE, the only promotion to truly rival the UFC in popularity, he has become one of the UFC’s most beloved fighters. In an interview with Karyn Bryant, that took place after Silva’s loss to Franklin on Fuel TV this weekend, the UFC President assured that “since he (Silva) came into the UFC, he’s acted like he’s been in the UFC his whole career. He’s been more than awesome and Wanderlei’s going to be with us for a long time whether he’s fighting or not.” A coach on the inaugural season of TUF: Brazil, Wand, who moved to the states in 2007 stayed in his home country after the six weeks of filming were up to do further promotion for the brand. Meanwhile, in his off-time Silva has been involved in several stateside promotional tours as well, truly the epitome of a company man.

Frank Mir: The former UFC Heavyweight Champion, who nearly had his career cut short, certainly has one of the most inspiring stories in the sport’s history. It comes of no surprise that Mir has shown his appreciation for the UFC never giving up on him and then some with all he’s done outside of the cage. Mir, whose UFC 100 main event with Brock Lesnar remains the highest selling event in the history of the promotion, is always willing to step-in and when needed. Whether it’s a short-notice fight, play-by-play analysis for the WEC, or being a panelist on the various shows for the Fox network, Mir is there for the company in any capacity he’s needed.

Up-and-Comers

Chael Sonnen: The man from the mean streets of West Linn, Oregon has proven to be a commodity for the UFC, both in and out of the cage. Sonnen’s bombastic personality has become a marketing juggernaut for the promotion. Chael P. is one of the most in-demand fighters for interviews, Q-and-A sessions, and media tours today; a call to which he has happily answered by obliging the UFC’s and every one of their whims. On top of all the aforementioned media responsibilities, the best promo man in the business has also served as a panelist on a variety of the UFC’s pre-fight shows and has been given his own segment on UFC Tonight, “Chael’s Corner.” While Sonnen’s role in the media  been slightly turned down recently, ahead of headlining the marquee fight of the summer in his rematch with Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight Champion, it’s a safe bet that he’ll be back in the spotlight regardless of the outcome.

Rashad Evans, Mark Munoz, and Brian Stann: These three men share this slot as they have all been given the role of analysts for nearly all UFC pre-show coverage. All three possess favorable personalities, and a work ethic that is nearly unrivaled both in and out of the cage. They have all proven to be more than competent in their newfound broadcasting roles. It is likely that we will be seeing more of them in this capacity, especially when their plates are not full with upcoming fights. Given the shear volume of UFC programming that fans are treated to these days, this level of insight and personality is a welcome addition to any show the company produces in the future.
