Garza Aims to Turn Things around at UFC 154

UFC featherweight Pablo GarzaIt was the best of times then it was the worst of times for UFC featherweight Pablo Garza. In essence, it truly has been a tale of two very different years for the highly touted prospect. At 2-2 inside the Octagon, “The Scarecrow” first saw glory in back-to-back flying first round finishes that earned a Knockout of the Night bonus and then a Submission of the Night bonus. Following that, Garza was D’Arce choked by Dustin Poirier at UFC on FOX, and then was on the receiving end of a takedown clinic by Dennis Bermudez in May.

It has been eye-opening and character building to say the least for the 29-year-old, and the lessons are not lost on Garza. If anything, he is using this short losing streak as a learning experience and one that could have lasting positive effects that take 12-3 Garza to the next level as a UFC fighter.

“I've learned that you can be on top of the world and lose it all just as fast,” reveals Garza. “I got my flying knee knockout against [Fredson] Paixao and I got my flying triangle submission against Yves [Jabouin] then I had two losses in a row. You can be on top of the world and lose it all. I've learned to keep grinding. I've learned to keep focusing on training and not how good things may be. I need to work on not being taken down and work on finishing fights for sure. What I learned most was going out there and fighting my fight and not trying to cope with another fighter's style. Just go out there and be myself and fight and not be worried about what he might do to me. That's the biggest thing.”

The North Dakota native’s first step toward being proactive in curbing his in-cage problems was an ingenious one, and it required a plane flight to Northern California. If there's something strange in your UFC career, who ya gonna call? Nate Diaz. “Nate is taller and lankier like me,” says Garza. “It was good to learn and train with somebody who has a similar body type as me and hear their perspective on the fight game. That was the whole idea of me going out there.”

For three weeks, Garza battled with and alongside the “Skrap Pack” at Cesar Gracie’s gym in Stockton, CA. As mentioned the majority of the allure was working with the UFC’s number one lightweight contender, Diaz, while he is preparing for his title fight with current champion Benson Henderson in December. Two of the most notable aspects of his approach to fighting that Garza picked up on is Diaz’s attitude both in the Octagon and in the gym, something that has led to a lot of Diaz’s success.

“I believe it's a mindset,” explains Garza. “To throw it out there, Nate doesn't give a s**t. If you put Nate in a ring in front of somebody, he's going to fight. That's just his mindset. Because of that, that makes him so good. That's the type of mindset that I'll have.”

The Diazes are well-known for a fearlessness and ferociousness in the cage, and that is honed by how they prepare in the gym. “They train like how they fight,” affirms Garza who admits his previous sparring sessions were not as severe, so he benefitted from the impassioned workouts. “They don't go out there and pitter patter each other for five rounds. They go out there and train hard and spar hard like it was a fight, and they’re more intense in sparring because that will reflect in your fighting.”

Up next for Garza to show off his version of the “Stockton Slap” is a UFC 154 bout in Montreal, Canada against featherweight stalwart Mark Hominick. Despite a three fight losing streak, Ontario’s striking savant is still one of the more feared and respected veterans the UFC has to offer. Recently, Hominick has been on the losing end of two Fight of the Night performances in his last three fights against Eddie Yagin and UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Also, “The Machine” just passed an anniversary marking a decade in MMA, and his continuing presence in the sport has been a shining example for newer generations.

“Mark Hominick is an awesome fighter,” admits Garza. “Before I even got in the WEC, he was a guy I would watch that I would honestly look up to and be amazed at how awesome he is at fighting. His standup is amazing. He's just awesome. He's just a guy I really looked up to and a guy who I tried to copy for my own fight game to be like his. It's an honor to even fight him and it's a test for me. Even though he's on a losing streak, he's still dangerous and he's still a big name. He's still an awesome fighter. I don't take anything away from him just because he lost his last three fights. I still consider him top 10 in this division, in my opinion. He's an awesome fighter, and for me to beat him will be huge in my career.”

Besides the near month with Diaz, the University of North Dakota graduate has been training with his hometown fight team at the Academy of Combat Arts led by Erik Paulson protege Dylan Spicer. “We're a small gym over here, but the talent of training partners and coaches is pretty big,” adds Garza of the Fargo sister school to Paulson’s The Academy in Minnesota, where Garza also trains. “We always try to break down what I'm not good at and always try to improve that and focus on those things. Also, I've learned to calm down and not let the lights and cameras go to my head. It's the same mindset of going in to win and to train hard though.”

On November 17th, “The Scarecrow” will tangle with “The Machine” in a scrap to get back on the winning track. “It’s going to be Fight of the Night, simple as that,” predicts Garza, who will be poised to act instead of react against one of his MMA idols. “I’m going to have a different mindset than I had before, and be myself like I did in the Paixao fight and like I was for Yves. Instead of thinking about how not to lose, I'm going to think about winning. Me beating one of my MMA heroes is going to be good.”

Ray Sefo is not just the president of World Series of Fighting, he’s also a fighter

The World Series of Fighting makes its debut on Saturday night, with headliners Andrei Arlovski and Devin Cole in the main event. But while they prep for the weekend's bouts that will air on NBC Sports Network, they also are thinking ahead to the next fights.

Ray Sefo, a kickboxing legend and the president of WSOF, is considering putting himself on the card.

"Absolutely," he joked while in studio with MMAjunkie.com Radio "It's my promotion."

Sefo said it became much more likely after he fielded offers to fight in New Year's Eve in Japan, as well as in March in Australia. While Sefo's WSOF partners weren't initially keen on the idea, the outside offers changed their minds.

"I think they're realizing if I'm still very active, why not have it in their own league," he said. "We just talked about it [four] days ago, and they were like, 'We should talk about that.'"

Sefo is a true veteran of combat sports. Though he is known for his kickboxing, he has also tried boxing and MMA. He worked at Xtreme Couture for years, helping several fighters shore up their striking. It was Sefo who helped Randy Couture prepare for his bout with boxer James Toney.

And now, it might be Sefo who could be a fighter and promoter for the same show. Do you think this is a good idea? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney will waive matching period should Eddie Alvarez not re-sign

Negotiations to keep Eddie Alvarez in Bellator resumed nearly the moment he stepped out of the cage following a knockout of Patricky "Pitbull" Freire.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney now has advanced the timeline on Alvarez's decision, telling MMAjunkie.com that he'll waive a standard 90-day matching period if the ex-champ doesn't initially take a new contract offer.

"Based on our relationship with Ed, there's no reason to hold him to a series of months of not having the opportunity to look at those offers," Rebney said.

Alcantara-Eduardo, Castro-Vieira added to UFC's January 19 card in Brazil

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_19.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Two bouts have been added to the UFC's next planned event in Brazil, as SporTV reports that Yuri Alcantara will drop to bantamweight to take on Johnny Eduardo, and Tatame reports that Godofredo Castro and Milton Vieira will meet in a featherweight bout on the January 19 card.

The event is expected to be a UFC on FX or UFC on Fuel card, though there's been no official determination as of yet, and no host city has been chosen. The card will not be a pay-per-view event, as the UFC will not run a pay-per-view card in 2013 until the Feb. 2 UFC 156 event.

Alcantara makes a move down to the bantamweight division after suffering his first loss since 2009 in his last bout. After a 3-0 start under the Zuffa banner, one in the WEC and two in the UFC, Alcantara lost a decision to Hacran Dias his last time out, and he'll look to start a new winning run down at 135 lbs.

Eduardo had a lengthy winning streak snapped himself last year, losing a decision to Raphael Assuncao in his UFC debut. However, he bounced back in his last fight, defeating Jeff Curran in May at UFC on Fuel 3.

Castro was a finalist on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil, but lost to Rony "Jason" Bezerra in the finals in June. He'll return against Vieira, the creator of the anaconda choke, who fought to a draw in his UFC debut against Felipe Arantes.

Family motivation, Tristar training pushing Ryan Ford for Bellator 79 fight with Kyle Baker

There are downsides to training far from home. Ryan Ford knows this, and his family does, too.

But the upside for him is that if you're going to be away from your comfort zone, you might as well do it with some of the best in the world.

And that's just what Ford believes he's doing now that he has taken up with the team at Tristar Gym in Montreal.

MOORE: Profile on Bryan Creighton ahead of BAMMA 11 Debut

BAMMA_11_wide.jpg

By: Dan Moore, MMATorch UK Contributor

Trying to make it through the professional ranks of MMA is an incredibly tough way to make a living. Very few earn enough money to be able to train full time; especially those not fighting with top organisations like the UFC. Many fighters on the UK scene hold down a regular job to supplement their fight income; even established champions like BAMMA Lightweight Rob Sinclair.

Being in the British Armed Forces is one such job perfectly suited for any aspiring young fighter. Firstly, the Forces actively encourage feats of physical and sporting excellence. It's great for public relations, especially with a sport like MMA; where the watching demographic are usually the same age as those the Forces want to actively recruit.

26 year old Bryan Creighton is a prime example of everything I've just written in my introduction. Bryan has just signed for BAMMA and will make his debut for the promotion on Saturday the 1st of December, fighting Dawid Farycki in Birmingham, England. He is also currently serving with second Battalion The Duke of Lancaster Regiment, something he's done for the past five years, whilst also continuing to train and compete in the world of Martial Arts.

With a strong background in a variety of different disciplines including Muay Thai (70 fights), Thai-boxing, Jiu-Jitsu and amateur boxing (36 fights); Bryan is a former WAKO Kickboxing and Thai-Boxing featherweight champion, bronze medalist at the WMF Muay Thai World Championships and he also qualified for Taekwondo Olympic trials in Manchester earlier this year; just failing to make the cut for Team GB.

Bryan has recently made the transition into professional MMA, winning his first fight by unanimous decision back in July, he's now 2-0. So much training and dedication requires the full support of his employer, and in the words of Bryan: "They are 100% behind me as I am representing not only the battalion, but the entire service. As MMA is evolving rapidly, it is good to bring the aspects of MMA fitness to the Army world."

Bryan is set to deploy to Afghanistan in March 2013, his second tour in 2 years. Hopefully he'll be located near Lashkar Gah, and therefore able to train in his free time with John Smith of LKG MMA, a team I covered for Torch earlier this year. Win or lose in December, it's time to start focusing on the day job straight after, so Bryan can ensure he's fully prepared for every eventuality he might encounter, in the most dangerous place on earth.

For now the training for his December fight intensifies, and under the spotlight of a sold out National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, this is a huge opportunity for him to prove the sacrifices have been worthwhile. Bryan knows he couldn't have made it this far without the support of others: "I would like to thank my fans, thank my friends and family for their belief in me, my Battalion, Bodytorque Strength & Conditioning, Dead Fast Clothing, Sapphire MMA and TFL Sports Agency."

Every single one of them will be willing him on to victory in December; a perfect early christmas present before he heads to the Middle East in the New Year. If you are interested in sponsoring Bryan ahead of his upcoming BAMMA fight; please message me on Twitter and i'll happily pass the information on to him.

You can watch Bryan in action using the following link:

Pat Barry Draws Shane Del Rosario for TUF 16 Finale in December

http://www.mmaweekly.com/pat-barry-d...le-in-december

A pair of heavyweights looking to get back on track will meet at the TUF 16 finale show as Pat Barry meets Shane Del Rosario.

Sources close to the fight confirmed the newly scheduled bout to MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday. MMAJunkie.com first reported the match-up.

It’s been a rocky road lately for Pat Barry, who has gone just 1-3 in his last 4 fights. Win, lose or draw however, Barry is always an exciting performer who goes out to put on a show, and he’ll look to do that once again in December.

Facing Barry will be Strikeforce transplant Shane Del Rosario, who looks to bounce back after the first loss of his career in his UFC debut back in May.

Following a long layoff after being involved in an auto accident, Del Rosario returned at UFC 146 in May, but fell short against fellow up and comer Stipe Miocic.

Now the California fighter looks to erase that memory and get his first UFC win as he faces Pat Barry at the Ultimate Fighter finale on Dec 15 from Las Vegas.

UFC Champ Junior dos Santos thinks he could knock out boxing champ Wladimir Klitschko

DosSantosJunior_Wide_2.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"I could beat that guy, man. Maybe not easy, but I could knock him out... I watch a lot of fights with Wladimir, and I see a lot of holes. Wladimir, the Klitschkos, they're amazing. I like to watch them fight, especially Wladimir, but it's kind of boring. They are really good at what they do, but they are very careful. They don't go to the fight to finish the fight. They stay there in that safe strategy all the time. It's not the Mike Tyson time. Guys don't finish fights."

-UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos comments on champion boxer Wladimir Klitschko in an Associated Press interview.

Penick's Analysis: Dos Santos is a great MMA striker, but there are very big differences between elite MMA strikers and elite, world-class boxers. He clearly believes in his striking game, but saying he'd knock out a championship boxer at this stage is a little crazy. Not to mention he's just off in his assessment of Klitschko's career despite the commonality of that criticism. As Brent Brookhouse at BloodyElbow.com points out, Klitschko has finished 84% of his career fights, a higher percentage than Tyson. Not only that, but in his victories, 88% have been stoppages, which is the same mark for Tyson. So it's a mischaracterization of Klitschko from the UFC Champ, and a bit of an overinflation in his mind about where his striking game is at. Regardless, it's not something we're going to actually find out or not, because dos Santos and Klitschko are not going to fight one another.

Mike Pierce in against Seth Baczynski at UFC on FX 6 in Australia

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_18.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Seth Baczynski has a new opponent for UFC on FX 6 this December, as the UFC announced on Tuesday that Mike Pierce has stepped in for an injured Kyle Noke in the fight.

Pierce enters off a thrilling come-from-behind win over Aaron Simpson earlier this month at UFC on FX 5 in Minneapolis. Simpson had nearly finished Pierce in the first round, but Pierce came back in the second and scored a knockout win.

Baczynski has won six straight fights into the December 15 event in Australia, including four straight since being brought back to the UFC. Most recently, Baczynski knocked out Simeon Thoresen at UFC 152.

UFC on FX 6 will be headlined by the TUF: Team Australia vs. Team UK coaches bout between Ross Pearson and George Sotiropoulos, and will air live in North America on Friday, Dec. 14.

Bellator 81's Rich Clementi has 'No Love' for turnaround times, but loves tourney format

Rich Clementi has been around the game a long time, so he knows there are pros and cons to just about everything in MMA.

When it comes to his current home in Bellator, that's no exception. Clementi loves Bellator's tournament format because he believes title challengers all earn their shots. But at the same time, getting that shot sure can be taxing.

Clementi next faces Marcin Held in the promotion's lightweight tournament semifinals, just a month after his opening-round win.
