Jesse Ronson guns for UFC contract following weekend win over Ryan Healy

Sore hands and feet are Jesse Ronson's only career roadblocks at this moment.

Ronson believes a recent victory over fellow lightweight Ryan Healy proves he's capable of joining his well-known teammates in the UFC.

"I would like for this fight to put me on the next level, but we'll see how it goes," he told MMAjunkie.com.

Guest Post: On the Passing of Ramon "The Diamond" Dekkers

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_248.jpg

The following piece was submitted to MMATorch by guest contributor David Bargh

Yesterday the world of combat sports lost a true legend in Ramon "The Diamond" Dekkers at the young age of just 43. It has been reported that Dekkers was riding his bike when he collapsed after feeling light headed; when emergency services arrived on the scene they attempted to revive him but to no avail.

Dekkers began training in Muay Thai in his teens under Cor Hemmers and won a Dutch national title at the age of 18. He went on to be an eight time world champion at six different weight classes fighting 221 times and was the first Dutch fighter to really make an impact in Thailand. His one and only appearance in an MMA bout came in 2005 against Genki Sudo which he lost via heel hook. Dekkers famously fought UFC veteran Duane "Bang" Ludwig in a K-1 Max 2005 superfight, after injuring his shoulder in the first round Dekkers punched with only his left hand and still managed to knock Ludwig down in every round and take a unanimous decision win.

After retiring in 2006 Dekkers went on to be a coach at the Dutch Golden Glory team, coaching such MMA stars as UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem and former Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Champion Marloes Coenen.

'TUF' times: Sonnen says he turned down spot on 'TUF 1,' Jones once cut from tryouts

LAS VEGAS - The debut season of 'The Ultimate Fighter' has long been recognized as the starting point of MMA's current popularity boom and was responsible for launching the careers of stars such as Stephan Bonnar, Kenny Florian, Forrest Griffin, Josh Koscheck, Chris Leben, Diego Sanchez and Mike Swick.

But as successful as the 2005 series debut proved, imagine what it could have been with one Chael P. Sonnen.

Sonnen, who coaches on the upcoming 17th edition of the series, says he actually turned down a spot on "TUF 1."

Spike TV Launches Bellator App

Spike TV launched an iPad and iPhone App to be used while watching Bellator MMA.  According to the press release, the App will give users real time fight data as they watch the event.

Via press release:

When the Bellator cage door closes and the gloves touch, the innovative app works in concert with the live Spike broadcast to supply fans with real-time fight data only available through the app.  Developed from the ground up to make watching live fights more immersive, viewers will have the unique ability to track expansive fighter analytics and participate in the on-air broadcast.  As “The 4th Judge,” fans can score rounds with the help of real-time statistics powered by CompuStrike, a service providing data in 26 categories from arm strikes to submission attempts.

“The Bellator app is truly the first of its kind.  It allows our passionate fans to experience the fight as a virtual fourth judge – creating a level of immersion that’s unparalleled in any sport,” said Jon Slusser, Senior Vice President, Sports and Multiplatform Events, Spike TV.  ”We see this second-screen as a game-changer.  The results from the app will actually become part of the on-air discussion.  There’s nothing like that in all of sports television.”

“At Bellator, we continually look for new ways to connect with our fans in a more meaningful way,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. “This innovative app will resonate with our first-adopter audience, who will feel closer to the action than ever before.”

As “The 4th Judge,” viewers will be able to have their opinions known during the live telecast.  The Bellator broadcast team of Jimmy Smith and Sean Wheelock will announce the results of viewers’ polling to see how fan opinion compares to their own as well as the official cageside judges. (“The 4th Judge” voting will not factor in the actual judges’ decisions).

The app features historical statistics for every fighter, pre-fight fan picks, and “Favorite Fight of the Night” polling, which will be sharable via social networks. The Bellator MMA app also gives fans the opportunity to watch exclusive videos, and dig deep into fighter biographies.

Spike TV worked with Omnigon Communications to develop the App.

Payout Perspective:

Multi-tasking is something that most of us do all of the time.  When watching Bellator or UFC, most check tweets to see what others are saying about the fights.  Its a good source of information and social interaction.  Hence, the Bellator App will create a center for fans to go.  The statistics and “The 4th Judge,” feature will create discussion among fans and another way to connect.

A Good Day To Die Hard

A Good Day To Die Hard.

As an action movie it was an entertaining, but average. As a Die Hard movie its pretty much the worst of the five movies in my opinion. Watching the movie you realize its a completely unnecessary and lazy sequel in the series.

The story revolves around John McClane going to Russia because he finds out his son has been arrested for murder in Moscow. What McClane is going to do once he gets there they don't say how he is going to help his son. Turns out his son Jack is actually a CIA agent who is in the midst of a operation where he is trying to save a political prisoner who has been targeted for assassination. McClane literally walks in front of his sons truck as his son is escaping from Russian mercenaries. His son abandons him in the street and McClane, who still thinks his son is a murderer, just steals someone's car and gets in on the chase and starts crashing into the mercenaries.

The movie doesn't even feel like a Die Hard sequel, it feels more like a spin off film. It should be called Son Of Die Hard because Jai Courtney, who plays John Jr, is the real lead of the movie. Willis is playing second fiddle in his own franchise and spends the entire movie standing around making fun of his son. Throughout the entire movie McClane's son complains that McClane is in the way and he is right, McClane fucks up the mission at the beginning of the movie and at no point does he actually do anything that makes it necessary that he continues with his son on this mission to save this prisoner. McClane doesn't even save the day at the end of the movie, nor does he even kill the villain. His son gets the glory moments in the movie and it just pisses you off to watch Bruce Willis take a backseat in a Die Hard movie in favor of a younger star. I can't stress enough how little Bruce Willis actually does in this movie. You honestly could've done the entire movie without him and called it something else and it wouldn't have changed the story at all.

Bruce Willis is already talking about doing a Die Hard 6 and says he wants Jai Courtney to be in that one as well. Its not surprising watching Die Hard 5. Bruce Willis wants to do another movie where he'll get paid a shit load of money and have someone else do all the work.

The acting is alright here, Bruce Willis seems like he is actually trying again compared to most of his movies lately. But the plot is an awful convoluted mess. It all feels like one big cheesy reason to set the movie in Russia. It also has tons of twists as the story goes which makes it even worse. Don't wanna give away who the villain is but when you find out it just makes you confused even more.

Not sure if they are going to be able to make another Die Hard after this. Its so weak that its probably best if they just let it go. If Bruce Willis can't handle big action movies anymore then let him leave Die Hard behind and keep making Red sequels where he doesn't have to do a lot.

NY Senate Committee Reports MMA Bill

ALBANY, NY February 28, 2013 – Lorenzo Fertitta, The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Chairman & CEO, today thanked the members of the New York State Senate Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation for overwhelmingly – 11 to 3 – approving S.2755, which would authorize the New York State Athletic Commission to add Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to the list of contact sports that may hold matches and exhibitions in New York.

“New York State’s time has come.  We are confident that 2013 is the year that the Empire State joins 48 other states in legalizing MMA,” Fertitta said.  “I want to thank Senator Griffo and the other cosponsors of the legislation for their leadership and Senator Little and the other members of the committee for their support.

“On behalf of the millions of New York State UFC and MMA fans, I’m hoping that this year, finally, the Assembly will join the Senate in supporting this legislation to bring revenues to the state and to local governments across the state, produce desperately needed jobs, and allow New Yorkers to see UFC and professional MMA events live in their own communities,” Fertitta said.  “As the UFC commemorates its 20th anniversary this year, we would love to celebrate with the most exciting fight card in our history at Madison Square Garden this fall.  Then we want to hit venues from Buffalo to Utica to Long Island.”

S.2755 is sponsored by Senator Griffo (R-Utica), along with eight cosponsors – Republicans and Democrats.  The bill passed the Senate in both 2012 and 2011.

“I know the Senate will again pass the bill this year and I am hopeful that with the leadership of Assembly Majority Leader Joe Morelle it will finally become law this year,” Sen. Griffo said.  “The legislation enjoys widespread, bipartisan support from upstate and downstate members in both houses.  Legalizing MMA in New York will means jobs and increased revenue.  It will mean UFC, as well as other MMA promoters, will hold matches here.  It means New York fans will no longer have to travel to New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and other states but will be able to see live professional MMA in their local arenas.”

“Once New York legalizes and regulates MMA, outstanding UFC fighters like light heavyweight champion Jon Jones – born in Rochester, raised in Endicott and living in Ithaca – and middleweight contender Chris Weidman – a proud Long Islander and Hofstra graduate – will be able to fight in front of their hometown fans.  And scores of other UFC fighters, including Olympic medalist and bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, will finally be able to show off their skills for their New York fans live and in person,” Fertitta said.

UFC on Fuel 8's Diego Sanchez says Takanori Gomi bout in Japan a chance to "live one of my dreams"

UFC_on_Fuel_TV_wide_logo_14.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"Coming to Japan was always a great goal and a dream of mine. Growing up, fighting through King of the Cage and even before the UFC and being on The Ultimate Figher, I always had a dream of coming to fight in wherever fighting most prominent in Pride. It was something that I always dreamed of doing, and I was always like, well, my career kept going and going and going, I guess I'm just never going to make it out there.

I guess when I decided to make the move back to 155, I looked at opponents, and I figured, what's a better opportunity than to come out here to Japan, live one of my dreams, and fight one of the greatest fighters to come out of Japan in his own hometown? That's a perfect situation for war and a great battle and that's what I live for and that's what I came out here to do."

-Diego Sanchez talks about living out a dream this Saturday when he fights Takanori Gomi in Japan at UFC on Fuel 8 (via MMAFighting.com).

Penick's Analysis: That Sanchez-Gomi fight is an extremely exciting bout, and Sanchez's return to the lightweight division is cause for excitement as well. Though he was completely outclassed in his title bout with B.J. Penn at 155 lbs., he looked fantastic in his other fights, and if he can get to the weight with less issues than he had in his first run it could be a very good thing for him. Getting a chance to return against a fighter like Gomi is the perfect opportunity for him to pull off something massively exciting as well, and to do so in Japan could make for a really cool experience for him. A lot of fighters who came up watching Pride without a chance to fight in Japan are really interested in getting that chance, and the UFC's plans to continue running events there will open up those opportunities for more in the future.

Jacob Volkmann signs with World Series of Fighting after UFC release

http://www.mmatorch.com/artman2/publ...le_16075.shtml

Jacob Volkmann has found a new home rather quickly after his UFC release, as the lightweight fighter has signed on with The World Series of Fighting. WSOF executive vice president and matchmaker Al Abdel Aziz confirmed the signing in a report from MMAFighting.com.

Volkmann was released from the UFC this month as part of a string of massive cuts necessitated by an over-bloated roster, but it still came as a surprise to most. After all, no lightweight outside of Ben Henderson and Jim Miller had as many wins as Volkmann in the UFC's lightweight division over the last three years.

Furthermore, he was 6-2 at 155 lbs., and had earned a submission win in October in his home state before falling to Strikeforce import Bobby Green at UFC 156.

Volkmann will now join the ranks of WSOF, which has signed a multi-year deal with the NBC Sports Network to televise their live events. They'll debut next month with an event in Atlantic City, headlined by a bout between Andrei Arlovski and Anthony "Rumble" Johnson.

Penick's Analysis: Good for Volkmann on landing on his feet quickly. He had inquired into Bellator, but said on Twitter he'd been told they were booked up through the summer. Despite the loss to Green in an off performance, Volkmann's going to be one of the better lightweights not fighting inside the Octagon, and he'll likely do well with the WSOF and perhaps get another shot inside the UFC.

Sanchez Eager to Get Unleashed on Gomi

UFC lightweight Diego SanchezSome may express themselves more vocally about how much they love fighting, but few mixed martial artists actually show it the way Diego Sanchez does. So as he sat on the sidelines for over a year nursing a series of injuries, you get the impression that the former Ultimate Fighter winner was going a little stir crazy.

“Having the downtime was really hard,” said Sanchez, who has been out of action since his Fight of the Night decision loss to Jake Ellenberger in February of 2012. “Being out of the gym and being away from what I know and what I love to do was hard, but ever since I’ve been back in the gym, it’s been awesome.”

This Saturday, Sanchez’ return will be in Japan against local icon Takanori Gomi. It’s an intriguing fight on many levels, with the most prominent having to do with a decision “The Dream” made while out of action in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to return to the lightweight division he competed in for three bouts in 2009.

“I had a string of bad luck,” said Sanchez of his second UFC stint at welterweight, which saw him go 2-2 with three Fight of the Night awards. “I broke my hand right before the (aborted) Matt Hughes fight and still stayed positive through that, and then I hurt my ankle right before the Ellenberger fight and my shoulder was really torn out, so I had to go and get my labrum repaired right after the Ellenberger fight, so it was a matter of injuries. And one thing I remembered from when I was fighting at 155 was that there was so much less chance of injury. I don’t know if it was that I was lighter and training with lighter guys or if it was easier on the joints, but I just felt better at ‘55, so I made the decision. Coming into my prime at 31, I thought it was a better decision for my career to jump down to 155 at this point. And on top of that, there were really big guys coming down to 170 like Nate Marquardt, and those guys are monsters who are really big and they don’t gas out. They do the weight cut properly, so that’s what I’m trying to do – be the big guy at 155 and I’m gonna go in there and wreak some havoc in the division. I feel that it’s the most stacked division in MMA, especially with the Strikeforce guys coming over, so it’s very exciting.”

And despite Sanchez’ success and ability to put on show-stopping fights at 170, he does make some good points when it comes to dealing with the size and strength of welterweights that seem to be getting bigger by the day. Eventually, a small welter will find himself unable to physically compete with larger foes on a consistent basis. So even though he saw plenty of good matchups for him at 170, 155 is just as attractive while also allowing him to fight on a more level playing field.

“Either division has tons of great fights, but I think I stack up better at 155, being taller, lighter, faster, and more explosive, and being bigger on top of that,” said Sanchez, whose first lightweight stint saw him defeat Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida before he lost a UFC 107 title bout against BJ Penn.

It’s a good move for Sanchez, and a sign that despite nearly 11 years in the pro game, he’s still tweaking his game, still staying sharp, and still staying relevant in an ever-changing sport. That evolution is something that he’s constantly keeping an eye on.

I think MMA’s going through a transition and another evolution process where it’s coming down to height and reach and distance,” he said. “Guys are learning how to use their kicks and use their jab, and that distance is not like the old days when you fought a real tall guy. Back then you could just take them down. But now guys are learning how to wrestle and they know how to use their leverage, so I thought it was the best decision (to move down in weight), and I think with my previous history at 155, going down and getting two or three wins that I’ll be right there and knocking at the door for a title shot.”

That’s probably an accurate assessment if he beats Gomi and adds a couple more wins over high-profile foes, and it’s something his peers from season one of TUF really can’t claim at this point. Kenny Florian and Stephan Bonnar are retired, Josh Koscheck, Chris Leben, and Mike Swick are all coming off losses, and Forrest Griffin is recovering from a knee injury. So what’s the secret for Sanchez?

“I think, for the most part, it was my age, just being so young when I was on The Ultimate Fighter,” he said. “I was only 22 years old when they filmed it. And I just continue to keep that open mind like Greg Jackson and keep learning and keep getting better in other areas. I want to be a better kickboxer, I want to be a better boxer, and those are the areas of my game that I’m really working on a lot right now. But of course, I’m still always trying to keep my grappling, wrestling, and ground and pound sharp because that’s what I do best. Nowadays you have to be a really well-rounded mixed martial artist because the fight does start on the feet.”

That’s home for Gomi. But as far as Sanchez is concerned, “The Fireball Kid” is the perfect foil for his comeback fight, and he can’t wait for the bell to ring on Saturday night.

“Me coming off these injuries, I was focused on getting the right fight for right now, and I really felt that him coming off those two wins over two really tough guys, he’s on an upswing in his career,” said Sanchez of Gomi, who has recently defeated Eiji Mitsuoka and Mac Danzig. “But at the same time he’s 34 years old, I feel he’s had his prime, and I think he’s one of those guys that’s not gonna run away from me. He’s gonna fight me good and I think he makes for a very exciting fight, and that’s what I’m hoping for. My goal for this fight is to showcase all my MMA. I want to showcase my striking, my wrestling, and my grappling, and play the game that I love.”

And he gets to do it in Japan for the first time in his career. Sanchez says competing in the Land of the Rising Sun is a “very big thing,” but with his family and friends watching on TV and not on site, he’s treating the bout not as a sightseeing trip with a fight thrown in, but strictly business.

“It’s like I’m going to battle,” he said. “It’s the first fight my parents aren’t going to other than the ones that were on The Ultimate Fighter, so to me, this is like a warrior going on a mission to another country to go to battle, and I’m excited for it. I’ve done it all and gone through it all, and nothing really matters after they lock that door on you and you’re in that cage. It doesn’t matter where you are, it all goes away, and it comes down to your training and you, your heart, your mind, your soul, and what you have, and who wants it more. That’s what I’m excited for. Lock that door, say my name, and let me go get Gomi.”

Pat Curran now meets Shabulat Shamhalaev at Bellator 95 on April 4

Bellator_MMA_logo_31.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

An injury to Daniel Straus has shortened the Title fight waiting period for season seven featherweight tournament winner Shabulat Shamhalaev, as Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney announced on Wednesday that he'll step in against Pat Curran on April 4.

Curran and Straus were set to square off on that Bellator 95 card in Atlantic City, but a broken hand forced Straus out of the fight on Tuesday.

Shamhalaev earned his shot at the Title just last week, knocking out Rad Martinez on Spike TV. That bout was supposed to take place last fall, but was canceled last minute with Shabulaev ill backstage. The commission wouldn't allow him to continue that night, leading to the fight being rescheduled.

He'll now get his shot at Curran, who successfully defended the belt in January in the first Bellator fight ever on Spike TV. In that five round battle, Curran defeated Patricio "Pitbull" Freire by decision.

Jeremy Stephens drops to featherweight, meets Estevan Payan at UFC 160

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_246.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Following a knockout loss to Yves Edwards, Jeremy Stephens will attempt to keep himself on the UFC's roster as he drops to featherweight for the first time. The UFC announced on Wednesday morning that Stephens will take on Estevan Payan at UFC 160.

For the first time in his career, Stephens has lost three straight fights, with the Edwards KO following losses to Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis. That prompted the move to 145 lbs., and it also comes amidst his current legal troubles, stemming from an alleged assault in Iowa.

The 14-3 Payan comes over to the UFC after a two-fight stint in Strikeforce. The 14-3 fighter also drops to featherweight, and hopes to extend an eight-fight unbeaten streak. In his most recent outing, he stopped Mike Bravo on the undercard of the final Strikeforce event in January.

UFC 160 takes place on May 25, and will be headlined by the Heavyweight Championship bout between Cain Velasquez and Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.

Jeremy Stephens vs. Estevan Payan set for UFC 160

http://www.mmafighting.com/2013/2/27...et-for-ufc-160

Jeremy Stephens, the loser of three straight who is still embroiled in legal woes for what Polk County, Iowa, police say was his role in an alleged assault, will fight again in the octagon.

Stephens is dropping down to featherweight in order to fight Estevan Payan. The match is set for UFC 160, the promotion's Memorial Day weekend show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

"Lil Heathen" has lost consecutive matches to Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone and Yves Edwards, respectively. His most recent fight was the loss to Edwards, which came via first-round knockout.

That match had to be rescheduled after Stephens was arrested on the morning of their scheduled October 5 date in Minneapolis. While UFC officials worked to assist Stephens in getting released from jail, they were unsuccessful. He was eventually extradited to Iowa to face the charges, and later released on bail.

Stephens was charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor in connection with an assault case from 2011. Police sources told The Des Moines Register that in the incident, the victim was beaten so badly that he lost consciousness, stopped breathing twice and went to the hospital in critical condition.

Stephens continues to maintain his innocence, saying that while he was at the bar where the incident took place, he was not involved.

His opponent Payan will be making his UFC debut after going 2-0 in Strikeforce. Payan is 14-3 overall and hasn't lost in his last eight fights dating back to 2009.

UFC 160 will be headlined by a heavyweight title matchup of champion Cain Velasquez against challenger Antonio Silva.

WWE SmackDown! Taping Draws 1,600 Paying Customers

Last Tuesday’s SmackDown! taping in Toledo, Ohio was one of the worst attended WWE events in years as it drew 3,200 fans, with only 1,600 paid.

Following the event’s poor advance, WWE only sold tickets facing the camera so the Huntington Center would appear full on television. SLAM! Wrestling columnist Matt Bishop, who attended the event, described the venue’s appearance: “Tuesday’s tapings of WWE Smackdown, Superstars and NXT wasn’t notable because of what happened in the ring, but rather because of what was happening outside the ringside area. Or more appropriately, what wasn’t happening.

“Toledo’s second WWE show of 2011, this time at Huntington Center, was notable because of the lack of fans inside the facility, with almost all of the camera side tarped off, along with a large part of the upper bowl, including all of the seats in the end zone.”

Despite ‘child porn’ remark by South Dakota legislator, MMA on its way to regulation there

It turns out comparing MMA to child porn is not the best lobbying technique. After a congressman in South Dakota rallied against a bill to regulate MMA by calling it "the child porn of sports," the bill still passed through the South Dakota House 50-20.

Steve Hickey, the representative who grabbed plenty of headlines by fighting against MMA's regulation in his state, tried to add an amendment to create a commission that would oversee different disciplines of martial arts but not MMA, because that makes a ton of sense. Wait, no, it doesn't. The South Dakotan House saw the lack of sense in that amendment and defeated it.

After the bill makes a quick stop in the Senate to review the amendments that were passed, the bill will head to the desk of South Dakota governor Dennis Daugaard. He has strongly opposed MMA in the past, but the South Dakota Argus Leader says it will still likely become a law:

Daugaard could sign the bill, veto it, or let it become law without his signature. Both houses of the Legislature passed the fight commission bill with margins sufficient to override any veto.

Hickey's remarks about MMA brought back memories of governments across the country banning "no-holds barred" fighting in the late 90s, and Senator John McCain calling MMA "human cockfighting." Since then, regulation and rules have turned MMA into the sport we know today. It's now regulated in 46 states, and in 2007, McCain even praised MMA's progress.
