Jacob Volkmann signs with World Series of Fighting after UFC release

Jacob Volkmann has found a new home rather quickly after his UFC release, as the lightweight fighter has signed on with The World Series of Fighting. WSOF executive vice president and matchmaker Al Abdel Aziz confirmed the signing in a report from MMAFighting.com.

Volkmann was released from the UFC this month as part of a string of massive cuts necessitated by an over-bloated roster, but it still came as a surprise to most. After all, no lightweight outside of Ben Henderson and Jim Miller had as many wins as Volkmann in the UFC's lightweight division over the last three years.

Furthermore, he was 6-2 at 155 lbs., and had earned a submission win in October in his home state before falling to Strikeforce import Bobby Green at UFC 156.

Volkmann will now join the ranks of WSOF, which has signed a multi-year deal with the NBC Sports Network to televise their live events. They'll debut next month with an event in Atlantic City, headlined by a bout between Andrei Arlovski and Anthony "Rumble" Johnson.

Penick's Analysis: Good for Volkmann on landing on his feet quickly. He had inquired into Bellator, but said on Twitter he'd been told they were booked up through the summer. Despite the loss to Green in an off performance, Volkmann's going to be one of the better lightweights not fighting inside the Octagon, and he'll likely do well with the WSOF and perhaps get another shot inside the UFC.
