Jesse Ronson guns for UFC contract following weekend win over Ryan Healy

Sore hands and feet are Jesse Ronson's only career roadblocks at this moment.

Ronson believes a recent victory over fellow lightweight Ryan Healy proves he's capable of joining his well-known teammates in the UFC.

"I would like for this fight to put me on the next level, but we'll see how it goes," he told MMAjunkie.com.

OneFC CEO Cui sees fight network as a sign of “exponential growth of MMA in Asia”

MMA Payout had the opportunity to speak with OneFC CEO Victor Cui about the company’s recent agreement with Glory Sports International to a fighter exchange program.

”[The move] shows the exponential growth of MMA in Asia,” Cui added, “It’s a distinct Asian approach.” Cui points to the collaborative and inclusive approach of the OneFC Network which was established during its Fighter Summit in 2011. Fighters in the OneFC Network are allowed to fight with other promotions and vice versa.

Although OneFC will not be promoting the event on December 31st, Cui’s OneFC fighters will be on the card. Cui confirmed that Bibiano Fernandez, Shinya Aoki, Phil Baroni and Melvin Manhoef are scheduled to appear on the New Year’s Eve card to be held at the Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo, Japan.   Cui indicated that there may be more OneFC fighters although nothing had been confirmed.

Via OneFC press release:

Both internationally recognized organizations have agreed to fighter exchanges. It means that any GSI MMA fighter will automatically be eligible to compete exclusively in Asia on ONE FC and any ONE FC fighter will automatically be eligible to compete in GSI MMA events which are currently held under the DREAM brand in Japan. Fighter exchanges are expected to happen with immediate effect. The fighter exchange program also covers ONE FC Network of other affiliate association and gyms across Asia.

Highlighting this recent collaboration, Cui extolled the virtue of the OneFC fighter exchange program stating “it’s for the benefit of its fighters, fans and promoters.”  Cui indicated that the program ensures that the participating promotions will take care of its fighters.

As for OneFC, it plans on doing 12-14 of its own events in 2013 starting in Malaysia on February 2nd. Cui projects the company doing 18-24 events in 2014.  It also boasts an ESPN television contract in Asia which will help with the promotion of its product.

Payout Perspective:

The fighter exchange is a unique idea and should bolster the New Year’s Eve show for Glory and Dream.  OneFC will still benefit from the exposure of its fighters at the event and will be able to utilize any Glory fighters for its own events.  With a television contract with ESPN, we should look for more promoters to work with OneFC.  Cui also indicated that OneFC will have big news with a major sponsor for 2013 which will be announced next month.  MMA Payout will keep you posted.

UFC’s Dong Hyun Kim Says 90% Of UFC Fighters Are On the Juice | UFC NEWS

“While a lot of people believe doping tests work, just like a breathalyzer test you can get away with it by just controlling timing. Most of the steroids user just cycle and get by the tests. It’s almost like other athletes look down on you as an idiot if you don’t do steroids. It’s like non-users are bicyclists while steroid users are racing with motorcycles. But I am one of those “idiots” that don’t use performance enhancers. I would say 90% of UFC fighters use performance enhancers.”

The very outspoken Dong Hyun Kim tells Korean media outlet Mfight that he believes 90% of his promotional peers are using performance enhancing drugs.

Nate Diaz out to stop Ben Henderson at UFC on Fox 5, doesn't think he can win a decision

UFC_on_Fox_logo_wide_1.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Nick Diaz's loss to Carlos Condit in February has the Cesar Gracie camp a little paranoid and wary of any fight going to the judges moving forward with the Diaz brothers, and its with that mindset that Nate enters next weekend's UFC on Fox 5 event.

Speaking with Inside MMA on AXS TV on Monday, Diaz said he needed to do everything in his power to stop Benson Henderson, because he doesn't think things will go his way if it reaches the judges.

"I don't think I've got any chance of winning any type of decision," Diaz said (transcribed by MMAFighting.com). "So I got to go out there and do what I can do, try to finish my opponent, try to be the better fighter and win the fight. But, either way, if it goes to decision, I'm going to be the one out-scoring and out-pointing, out-doing him."

It's a thought process reinforced by his trainer, Cesar Gracie, who added his thoughts to the proceedings on the show as well.

"Unfortunately, pretty much it is [the camp's mindset now]," Gracie said. "It's almost like in Nick's case, he figures he's fighting his opponent and he's fighting the judges. So he's got to finish people. These guys fight like that anyways."

"Unfortunately we've got to get those finishes, or maybe win something so lopsided that we get a decision. We saw that with B.J. Penn. I've never really seen a close decision where the nod was given to the Diaz's. I always see them, if it's close they're going to lose. I don't know why. I think maybe the judges really don't care for them that much."

Penick's Analysis: There's no conspiracy against the Diaz brothers when it comes to judging, but it's definitely tough to be on the wrong end of close decisions more than once, and it's not surprising they feel the way they do. Still, when you go back to the Condit fight, just as many people feel Condit should have won that fight given what actually happened in the cage, so now in Nate's case, it's got to be a great performance to leave no doubt that he's the better fighter next Saturday in Seattle. It may take him finding a way to stop Ben Henderson, but if he does what he has to do, he shouldn't need to worry about the judges.

Ronda Rousey comments on Georges St-Pierre, sex before fighting

Ronda_Rousey_wide_6.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

2013 could be a big year for women's MMA, and Ronda Rousey especially, as she makes her way into the UFC's Octagon for the first time. Rousey continues to garner more publicity than many, and she does a good job at appealing herself to a larger sports audience.

She showed that off again on Wednesday during an appearance on Jim Rome's brand-new program on Showtime. The always charismatic Rousey had quite a few interesting things to say, touching on a few different subjects throughout the interview.

First up was Georges St-Pierre, who made some comments about women's MMA recently that were not well received by the likes of Rousey and several other women fighters.

Said St-Pierre recently: "It's good for her [getting in the UFC]. I'm happy for the girls that fight, but me personally, I have a hard time watching the girls fight. It's the way I grew up maybe, the mentality, I'm different, I'm old school, but I have a hard time watching girls fighting. It's hard for me."

Though St-Pierre tried to be as diplomatic as possible with his answer, Rousey still thinks he was wrong in what he said and how he said it.

"Initially the way that he said it, it reminds me a lot like when you listen to boxing fans that are like 'oh, the MMA fighters, they're good athletes, and they're talented and good for them, but I can't stand to see guys humping on the ground like that, it's not a real man's sport, good for them that they make money' that kind of prejudice against it," Rousey said (transcribed by MMAWeekly.com).

“He seems to have very much that same kind of prejudice towards women in MMA, and he said it as tactfully as possible, that doesn't make it a tactful thing to say... People were getting mad at me for being, like, 'that's wrong.' But if there's an absence of debate, I think that just pretty much means acceptance of it. These girls when they go out to fight, they're pouring their hearts out, they deserve to be celebrated and not just merely tolerated."

Rousey's other eyebrow raising comments surrounded the topic of sex before fights. The old adage has been that abstinence before competition is needed for athletes, but Rousey's got a different take when it comes to female fighters.

"For girls, it raises your testosterone, so I try to have as much sex as possible before I fight, actually," Rousey commented. "Not with like everybody. I don't put out like a Craigslist ad or anything, but if I got a steady I'm going to be like 'yo, fight time's coming up.'"

However, while she thinks it's a good idea in the time leading up to a fight, she does draw the line on fight day itself.

"You can't (expletive) somebody and go fight that day."

Penick's Analysis: Rousey absolutely knows how to get people interested in her and what she has to say, and it doesn't hurt that she knows what to say most of the time. When it comes to the GSP situation, I can understand thinking he's behind-the-times in his mentality, but at the same time, not everything is for everyone. Not everyone is going to get behind MMA in general, but there can be some criticism handed down to someone in GSP's spot. He's one of the highest profile fighters in the sport, and having him give anything but a glowing recommendation of women's MMA can be perceived by those fighters as setting them back. That's how Rousey and company have taken it, and that's how they'll react.

Lorenz Larkin vs. "Jacare" Souza added to Jan. 12 Strikeforce event

http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc/2012/...ikeforce-event

It turns out Lorenz Larkin will fight on Jan. 12 after all.

Just days after his fight with Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold fell out for a second time -- prompting Larkin to all but call Rockhold a faker on Twitter -- the company announced that Larkin will meet former champion Ronaldo "Jacare" da Souza on the Oklahoma City card.

Larkin, who fights out of Riverside, Calif., is 13-0 on his career (although that includes a loss which was later turned to a no-contest, after "King" Mo Lawal tested positive for steroids). The former light heavyweight won his 185-pound debut when he scored a decision win over veteran Robbie Lawler in July.

Souza (16-3, 1 no-contest), meanwhile, held the Strikeforce title in 2010-11 before losing to Rockhold. He's rebounded with wins in both of his fights since, including his 41-second knockout of Derek Brunson in San Diego on Aug. 18.

UFC on Fox 5's Rory MacDonald says he would love to fight Nick Diaz in the future

Rory_MacDonald_2.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Rory MacDonald fights B.J. Penn next Saturday night at UFC on Fox 5 in Seattle, but he already has an idea of at least one possible opponent for his next fight. In an interview with MMAWeekly.com, the 23-year-old commented on a potential fight against a returning Nick Diaz.

"I would fight him," MacDonald said flatly. "[He comes back] in February, and I might be ready to fight in like March or something like that. He might be my next fight after B.J., you never know how it works."

"We'll see, I'd love to fight him."

It may not be the first option for Diaz upon his return from suspension, but it's another name in the mix that could make sense in 2013.

Penick's Analysis: That's a fight that could very well happen in 2013 or 2014, and it will be a good one if it comes to fruition. MacDonald's got to get past Penn first, and he won't be the first candidate the UFC looks at for Diaz, but if something else doesn't come together, MacDonald's a better option than most. That especially the case if he gets past Penn and doesn't suffer any injuries. In that event, Diaz-MacDonald could be a lot of fun.

Matt Riddle vs. Che Mills Rumored For UFC on FUEL TV 7

http://www.themmanews.com/matt-riddl...v-7-in-london/

News broke this afternoon that the Ultimate Fighting Championship would be returning to the United Kingdom this coming February with UFC on FUEL TV 7 and now the event may have it’s first event, pitting Matt ‘Deep Waters’ Riddle (7-3, 1NC) and English fighter ‘Beautiful’ Che Mills (15-5, 1NC) against one another.

News of the Riddle vs. Mills bout was posted by Fighters Only, who noted that the “fight was being lined up for the London show.”

UFC on FUEL TV 7 is expected to take place on February 16, 2013 at the Wembley Arena in London, England. The bout between Riddle and Mills should be featured on the main card, possibly even the co-main event.

Riddle is coming off a shot notice bout versus John Maguire a couple of weekends ago, winning a decision in Montreal as part of the UFC 154 event. The win pushed Riddle’s recent streak to three undefeated bouts. His last fight took place in July at UFC 149 and was originally declared a victory for ‘Deep Waters’ by submission. The result was overturned following a positive test for marijuana.

Mills is 1-1 in his last two and is 6-1 in his last seven matches. He earned a first round TKO victory over Duane Ludwig at UFC on FUEL TV 5 after ‘Bang’ suffered a knee injury early in the fight. The win put Mills back into the win column following a second round TKO defeat at the hands of Rory MacDonald at UFC 145 in April. ‘Beautiful’ won his Octagon debut at UFC 138 one year ago by stopping Chris Cope via first round TKO.

UFC on FOX 6 adds Krauss vs. Stumpf, Cedenblad vs. Natal

ufc on fox e1316565878623 UFC on FOX 6 adds Krauss vs. Stumpf, Cedenblad vs. NatalThe Ultimate Fighting Championship has confirmed two additional bouts for their sixth event on FOX television. Pascal “Panzer” Krauss will square off against Mike Stumpf in a welterweight bout while middleweight Magnus “Jycken” Cedenblad battles Rafael “Sapo” Natal.

UFC on FOX 6 will be held at United Center in Chicago, Illinois on January 26, 2013. UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson will put his title on the line against John Dodson in the main event of the fight card.

Krauss (10-1) saw his ten fight winning streak come to an end with a unanimous decision loss to John Hathaway at UFC on FOX 3 in May. He was scheduled to compete at UFC on Fuel TV 5 in September but had to withdraw following a training injury. In his promotional debut Krauss outpointed Mark Scanlon at UFC 122 in 2010. Stumpf (11-3) will be making his second appearance inside the octagon. He suffered a first round submission loss to T.J. Waldburger at UFC Fight Night 25. Stumpf, a Team Curran fighter, has recorded seven of his career wins by submission.

Natal (14-4-1) and Cedenblad (10-4) will both be looking to bounce back after setbacks in the most recent bouts. Natal suffered a second round head-kick knockout to Andrew Craig at UFC on FUEL TV 4. Prior to the loss, Natal had recorded consecutive wins over Michael Kuiper and Paul Bradley. In Cedenblad’s promotional debut he would be submitted by Francis Carmont at UFC on Fuel TV 2. Cedenblad has finished nine of his opponents with six victories coming by knockout.

Michael Bisping on Anderson Silva: "A champion needs to defend the title or he needs to vacate it"

BispingMichael_Wide_10.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Michael Bisping is continuing his push to get the UFC to introduce an Interim Championship in the middleweight division. The 33-year-old Brit will take on Vitor Belfort in January at UFC on FX 7 in Brazil, and though he's expressed respect for Silva as perhaps the greatest fighter in UFC history, the fact that the Champ isn't planning on fighting in the division anytime soon isn't sitting well with him.

"Regarding Anderson, I surely don't want an easy road to the championship," Bisping said in an interview with MMAFighting.com. "His last fight was at light heavyweight. His next fight is going to be at a catch-weight. When will be fight at middleweight? What if he gets injured and has to be on the sidelines? All that time will have passed. All the fighters at the top of the middleweight division are on the sidelines. We all want to be world champion some day. We work so hard and strive for it."

"It's not there if Anderson isn't defending the title. I'm not knocking him. He's the greatest fighter we have. But a champion needs to defend the title or he needs to vacate it. And when he comes back to middleweight, he should get an automatic shot. Or they should create an interim title. With Weidman out for six months, I don't think [Tim] Boetsch would have beaten Weidman. I don't think he can be world champion. I think myself and Vitor should be fighting for the interim title. Whoever wins it should continue to defend it. We keep the division moving. The division is more stacked than it's ever been but the champion isn't defending the belt."

Bisping would like to see Silva stay in the division and face the winner of he and Belfort, and if that's the case, he's happy to stop running his mouth. However, if Silva moves forward with fights against Georges St-Pierre and/or Jon Jones? That's not going to be met with positive thoughts from Bisping and the rest of the middleweight field.

"If that's the case, great. If he comes to fight, I'll shut the f*** up," Bisping said. "That's what I want. I don't want to have an easy run for the title. If he wants to fight the winner of me and Vitor, that's great. But if he fights GSP and Jon Jones, something needs to be done with the middleweight division."

Penick's Analysis: Bisping's making a lot of logical sense when it comes to the middleweight title picture, and with Chris Weidman's injury taking him out of the Boetsch fight, it's hard to argue against Bisping being the No. 1 contender right now as well. That's not to say the UFC will actually make this an Interim Title fight. They won't. But if Bisping beats Belfort, and Silva fights GSP next, the UFC may listen to his argument a bit more closely than they will right now.

Jose Aldo eying move to lightweight if he defeats Frankie Edgar at UFC 156

Jose_Aldo_wide_1.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"I've considered going to lightweight. As soon as my trainer decides that I can go up, then I will. This fight with Edgar will be a turning point. If I can win [against] him well, then I can prove that I can go [to lightweight]. He has a very strong reputation thanks to destroying several opponents. That's the motivation for me to face him and that will be probably my last biggest challenge [at featherweight].

It would have been a great fight in Brazil since Edgar is very popular in Brazil. Edgar is popular in Brazil because he has a lot of stamina, he never gives up, and he has a very good heart. But it's a very special week with the Super Bowl and I'm really happy for that... There will always be pressure, either for me or Edgar. But we're both on such a high level that we disregard pressure. We just do our jobs and everything will be fine. I see it as a challenge. Frank already proved that he is a trooper, he will go to fight all five rounds, and he doesn't give up. This is the fight I wanted."

-UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo talks to MMAFighting.com about a potential move to lightweight if he defeats Frankie Edgar at UFC 156 in February.

Penick's Analysis: There are still a number of interesting potential fights for Aldo in the featherweight division, so I really wouldn't mind seeing him stay at featherweight where he's dominated for so long. With that said, there are also a lot of highly intriguing fights in the lightweight division, and if he feels he can handle what will be a more significant size disadvantage in many fights, it could be a chance for him to continue building a legacy in the sport. His run at featherweight has been incredible as it is, and if he beats Edgar it will be that much more impressive, but regardless of whether he continues on at 145 lbs. or moves up, it will certainly be exciting to watch.

TUF 16 Weekly Recap - Episode 11

The episode gets right down to business and sets up the all-Team Nelson quarterfinal match between Joey Rivera and Jon Manley. Normally, each fighter throws some token catchphrases out there like, “I’m ready for war,” or, “[insert name] I’m coming for you!” This time, neither fighter seems very enthusiastic about fighting. They both genuinely like one another and respect one another’s abilities. Laaaame! Joey plans on out-striking Jon to get the win while Jon believes Joey is weak on the ground and looks to exploit that. Oh, and he warns Joey that he’s coming for him.

Manley vs. Rivera
Both fighters more forward in the opening round and trade punches and low kicks. A minute in, Manley rushes Rivera and pushes him against the fence. Rivera attempts a guillotine, but doesn’t finish. Manley doesn’t earn the takedown initially, but  keeps working at it and puts Rivera on his back. He soon passes to half guard and attempts some ground and pound. The two find themselves in an awkward position where Rivera is able to create a scramble and attempt a triangle choke. Jon defends and moves to side mount as the round ends.

The second round mirrors the first. The two initially trade a few low kicks, but Manley soon puts Rivera back against the fence. Rivera defends the takedown for a while, but can’t advance his position and winds up on his back again. Manley advances his position and even gets in position for a rear-naked choke, but there’s never any danger of the finish. The round ends with Manley in dominant position.

Manley wins the fight, and everyone is disappointed. Dana didn’t like fight. Roy Nelson says his guys looked like they didn’t want to be in the cage. Both fighters are unhappy with their performances, too. Jon Manley reveals “I was scared to exchange with him a lot because in practice he beats my ass.”

After seeing two guys who didn’t want to compete against one another, we shift to a pair that can’t wait to fight. Ricci probably understates things when he says, “Things have been weird in the house.” Hill makes a joke about putting ex-lax in Ricci’s pasta sauce which Ricci does not appreciate. He decides to secure his sauce by wrapping the entire pot in surgical tape. Sure, why not. The two then have a verbal confrontation. I was kind of hoping it would end like the classic 1970 film "Love Story" with one of them apologizing and the other saying, “Being bros means never having to say you’re sorry." Sadly, this was not the case.

On the bright side, Ricci/HIll gives us the trash talk we sorely missed from Manley/Rivera. Hill plans on pressuring RIcci and using his hands to dictate the fight. He also tells us, “Hard work beats talent and I’m going to prove that in the cage.” Ricci escalates things a bit more and calls Hill a “bum,” accuses him of being mentally weak and admits he’s not looking to KO or submit Hill, but to mentally break him. It’s always the accountant types who turn out to be the biggest sadists...

Ricci vs. Hill

Both fighters land some strong shots in the opening frame. Ricci’s left high kicks find their home while Hill connects with a solid low kick. At the 3:30 mark, Hill tires of this measured back-and-forth exchange and rushes Ricci. Ricci reverses and puts Hill against the cage. He finishes the takedown and starts to wing some big shots. Ricci controls Hill for the majority of the round and continues to throw punches and land elbows. Hill exposes his back with about a minute left. He avoids the submission, but he doesn’t avoid the elbows Ricci continues to drop as the round ends.

The second round opens with Ricci missing a kick. Hill tries to use this opening to blitz, but finds himself defending a takedown instead. At first, he’s successful and even gets a solid guillotine attempt. Ricci keeps pushing, though, and puts Hill on the mat again. Ricci takes the back but can’t finish since they’re both leaning against the fence. Hill stands up to try to shake Ricci off, but the banker clings to him like a baby panda. Hill gets close to escaping, but Ricci’s hooks stay firmly in place for the majority of the round. Hill finally gets to his feet with 13 seconds left, but it’s too late.

Ricci takes 20-18 across the board. Dana White doesn’t appear to be too pleased with this match either. He tells us that, “I expected it to be more of a explosive fight” and admonishes Hill for “having no ground game.” Hill says he lost because he didn’t give it 110%. Mathematical probabilities aside, what does that mean?

We cut right to the semi-final fight announcements. The first will be Jon Manley and Colton Smith. Jon gives us a brief glimpse into his strategy by saying, “I’m gonna have to hit him [expletive] hard.” The second semi fight will feature Mike Ricci and Neil Magny. While neither one of them says so, I believe that they too plan on hitting their opponents [expletive] hard.

We get a sneak peek of what will be the last regular episode of the season... which two fighters will advance to the finals? Who delivers the knockout? Will Michael Hill interrupt Ricci’s sleep by standing outside his window blasting Peter Gabriel’s, “In Your Eyes?” Find out next week!

Forrest Griffin has no intention to lose to a man in pink tights

Forrest Griffin talked to UFC.com about his UFC 155 bout with Phil Davis. The original "The Ultimate Fighter" winner is 2-1 in his last three fights, and has no intentions of dropping a bout to someone who wear pink shorts, like Davis has since UFC 112.

"I really don't want to beat up by a guy in pink tights," Griffin said. He also talked about Davis' nickname of Mr. Wonderful.

"I don't know the origin story behind it. Maybe there's a comic book that explains that it's really powerful. Maybe there's a nuclear material that turned his shorts pink. I don't know that."

Davis wears pink shorts in honor of breast cancer survivors. Several women close to him have battled the disease, and he spoke about how the shorts have prompted people affected by breast cancer to share their stories.

"As soon as people recognize me as the guy with the pink shorts in support of breast cancer awareness, they feel compelled to share their story," he said.

"Sometimes it's about their mom or sister who beat breast cancer, but that's not always the case. Sometimes, it's not a happy ending. But the whole point is to raise awareness and have people open up and tell you little pieces of their lives — it's all about showing support."

Silva vs. GSP: The Time is Now

Anderson SilvaIt’s the most talked about topic in mixed martial arts.

Georges St-Pierre versus Anderson Silva. Just writing those words evokes palpable anticipation. How often do fans get the opportunity to truly witness the two best fighters in the world, pound for pound, meeting at the peak of their reign?

Honestly, I cannot think of a single instance in the Zuffa era of the UFC where the two unquestioned pound-for-pound best met to decide who was the single best fighter in the world.

If you can think of an example, feel free to expound on it below. But I’ve been sitting here racking my brain and scouring the Internet trying to disprove my belief that it has never before happened in the current version of the UFC.

BJ Penn’s win over Matt Hughes in 2004 doesn’t qualify because Penn hadn’t yet hit legendary status in the mythical pound-for-pound debate until that shockingly decisive win. Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell were a couple of years and a few bad performances past the prime of their respective careers when they met in 2007. Randy Couture? Nope, he was never in the pound-for-pound debate during any of his big fights. Jon Jones? He may take umbrage at GSP holding the number two spot, possibly even rightfully so, but “Bones” has never faced a fellow pound-for-pound candidate after he rose to elite status.

The UFC isn’t any different than boxing in this regard. Pound-for-pound candidates rarely square off in the primes of their career. Look at the current list of greats. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is universally recognized as the best in the world. Manny Pacquiao used to challenge that distinction, which is why the two squaring off likely would have been the biggest fight in the history of the sport. But the pair couldn’t agree to terms. Now the “sell by” date may have expired due to Pacquiao’s recent loss to Timothy Bradley.

That brings us back to GSP versus Silva. This is the perfect time to make that epic matchup a reality. Not only will it likely shatter all UFC box office records. It will also definitively answer the question of who is the current alpha dog in the world of MMA.

Why is this the perfect time, you ask? Well, let me dive into that question.

Silva is in the midst of a historic championship run. His 10 consecutive successful title defenses is the most in history, doubling the previous best. Oh yeah, GSP has also beaten the old record. He now stands three fights behind Silva with seven consecutive successful defenses. Take away the nearly 19-month break to rehab his torn anterior cruciate ligament and GSP could very well be equal with or beyond Silva’s mark.

Those facts, in and of themselves, is enough to justify the fight. But there is more. Oh, so much more.

Silva not only holds the record for most consecutive successful title defenses. He also holds the records for most title wins, most consecutive UFC wins, longest title reign based on duration, and the most finishes. He has been so dominant that every fight he has been in, except for the first bout with Chael Sonnen, has more closely resembled a sparring match than a championship fight.

That is great. But Silva’s insane run of success makes many wonder whether he is growing bored with the challenges in front of him. Is he still training as hard as he used to? Is he still laser focused on growing as a martial artist? Does he still have the same hunger for the sport that he did when he was fighting for a paycheck, rather than to add on to what is already a secure financial future?

In other words, is Silva ripe for an upset? Many seem to think so. That is why guys below him in the middleweight food chain are champing at the bit to get into the cage with this guy. Does Michael Bisping, Chris Weidman, Vitor Belfort, Mark Munoz or any other 185-pound top challenger truly believe that they can beat Silva when he is at his absolute best? Maybe. Do they think they can win a three-fight series? They will say yes, but I’m not so sure that they will be speaking the truth (the whole truth and nothing but the truth).

Silva also turns 38 in five months. In other words, he is no spring chicken anymore. Not only does he have to contend with hungry young fighters wanting to take off his head. He also has to contend with Father Time, an opponent that defeats every athlete at some point.

But the biggest reason that this is the perfect time for Silva to challenge GSP is his legacy. Silva has two fights left on his contract. A Hollywood ending to his career would be a win over GSP at some catch weight – sorry, Firas Zahabi, asking Silva to make 170 pounds is, well, just silly—and then win over 205 pound champion Jon Jones.

Adding those two names to his resume would leave Silva with a legacy that wouldn’t likely be duplicated for decades, if ever. Granted, nobody can predict the future. Maybe Jones will do things that Silva can only dream of. Maybe some teenager or pre-teen is out there who will top them all. But the odds seem pretty long on any of those Silva-topping scenarios at the moment.

If Silva faces Jones first, a fight will GSP will be completely anticlimactic. Think about it. Would you buy GSP versus Silva, if Silva was fresh off a win over the 205-pound king? I would watch it, but not with the same anticipation that I currently have for the matchup.

Now is also the right time, when considering the matchup from GSP’s perspective. He recently Georges St-Pierreovercame the toughest hurdle of his career by surviving the ultra-tough Carlos Condit after a nearly 19-month injury-induced layoff. Johny Hendricks is likely waiting in the wings. Did anyone see what he did to Martin Kampmann? What about Jon Fitch?

GSP might be the rightful betting favorite over Hendricks, but does he really want to risk the most lucrative and historically significant fight out there for him by facing the southpaw slugger? I certainly wouldn’t risk it because that will render a fight with Silva completely irrelevant.

Plus, if GSP faces Silva at a catch weight, rather than the absurd notion of making the “Spider” drop to 170, it is a no-lose proposition. GSP’s belt won’t be on the line, and if he loses, he can chalk it up to a loss to a far larger man in a weight class north of where he is at his best. He will return to welterweight as the reigning champion and continue with his quest to break the standards of greatness that Silva continues to establish.

I know. This is a David versus Goliath scenario. Silva is a better (and much bigger) version of Condit, so what makes anyone think that GSP can score the upset? Why take a fight that the fans desperately want to see, if GSP is nothing more than a sacrificial lamb for the sport’s current undisputed kingpin?

I’ll tell you why. People said all the same things about BJ Penn’s decision to challenge Matt Hughes for the welterweight championship after twice failing to win the lightweight title. Penn didn’t care. He moved up one weight class and completely destroyed Matt Hughes, a man who many believed at the time was the sport’s pound-for-pound king.

Who is to say that GSP can’t do the same thing?
