Charlie Brenneman broke the news on Twitter this morning announcing he was released from his UFC contract. Brenneman last fought at UFC 152 in Toronto against Kyle Noke and was finished early in the first minute of the fight by strikes.
“I’m gone but not forgotten,” wrote the 15-5 Brenneman, making sure to thank fans and his former bosses for their previous support. “I’ll be back soon!”
Brenneman also spoke with BloodyElbow where he said he knew he wasn’t in a good position after the fight against Noke.
“A week had passed, and yesterday I got a call from my manager/trainer, Mike Constantino,” explained the 31-year old fighter. “He just said it as succinctly as possible, which is how I prefer it, ‘It’s not good, you’re cut.’”
Brenneman Sees a Changing of the Guard at Welterweight
As for future aspirations, Brenneman said he is open to signing with anyone and is determined to fight his way back into the UFC, stating, “I’m not closing the book on anything. The UFC is where I want to be, and it’s where I will be again. I give up a lot to fight. I don’t live with my wife. I live in New Jersey so I can devote myself to training, when all my family lives in Pennsylvania. It’s not a question of drive and passion. I have plenty of that. When that drive naturally expires, then I’ll think about stopping.”
Fans upset by the release are saying that Brenneman did some favors for the UFC by stepping in late for big fights, but “The Spaniard” doesn’t see it that way.
“I kind of made my own bed, and I hope to get to fight in the UFC again,” Brenneman said. “That’s just the way it goes.”
