Though there may be room for improvement where Strikeforce is concerned, it seemed as though the promotion was still doing fairly well with a handful of remaining stars on its roster and the support of a broadcaster like Showtime. However, after a September card was cancelled due to headliner Gilbert Melendez going down a week out with an injury, questions started surfacing about the relationship between Strikeforce/Showtime and the promotion’s future in general.
Now, with three of the biggest names attached to a November 3 event being forced off the lineup for health-related reasons, it looks like the entire show is in jeopardy and possibly Strikeforce itself as well.
Sara McMann Latest Fighter to Withdraw from November Event
According to a report on Inside MMA, Showtime is looking to part ways with Strikeforce and will likely do so if their November outing gets axed.
“I think in this particular case, if this happens it’s like two strikes and out,” explained host Bas Rutten. “I don’t think you can cancel a show three times. Fans are not gonna take it. They’re not gonna buy tickets anymore. The fans are gonna go, ‘Ahhh, the show’s not gonna happen anyways.’”
Fortunately, another reliable source in the form of UFC reporter Ariel Helwani has countered Inside MMA’s report, saying he’d spoken to Showtime officials and there are currently no plans to cut ties with Strikeforce.
