CM Punk in hot water after striking fan on RAW

WWE constantly encourages fans to get involved in events by drawing reactions out of them whether positive or negative. Chants of “What?” or “Yes!” are staples of nearly every show and it is common practice for WWE Superstars to insult or praise the city they’re competing in to get the crowd fired up.

However, an interaction between CM Punk and a member of the Sacramento audience went much further than expected when the WWE Champion exited through the aisles at the conclusion of RAW. While standing on the stairs, a number of individuals nearby started yelling at Punk and shoving him from behind. In video taken by fans, Punk is shown addressing the group before turning away. A person can then be seen shoving his head from behind, causing Punk to snap and deliver a backhand followed up by another punch.

Unfortunately, the footage also makes it clear the man who was struck was not actually the one who set things off with the initial shove.

WWE has since issued a statement on the matter, explaining, “During last night’s RAW televised event, WWE Superstar CM Punk exited the ring into the stands as part of the show. WWE security was unfortunately not in the appropriate place at the time. Given CM Punk’s persona as a ‘bad guy,’ fans were naturally heckling him, but unfortunately a few fans began shoving him and one struck in him in the kidney and on the back. WWE regrets that proper security measures were not in place, and CM Punk apologizes for reacting in the heat of the moment. Other than this isolated incident, WWE always provides proper security to ensure the safety of our fans and our performers.”

No official word has surfaced on if the affected fan plans on pressing charges or filing suit. Punk has not publicly commented on the matter either.
