Dana White is a really good tipper

UFC president Dana White is known as many things: entrepreneur, visionary, hothead, Pinkberry fan. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, he also deserves the title great tipper.

White and the UFC have apparently cut ties with the Palms, the Las Vegas Casino that has hosted several of the UFC's smaller events. White's credit line was reportedly cut, and the biggest loser from the fallout is the staff. White was known to give exorbitant tips to dealers and waitstaff.

"He changed people's lives," said one of the sources ... During one two-month hot streak, White tipped dealers more than $100,000, sources confirmed. "Anytime he came in, we knew it was a big payday," a Palms employee said.

The Palms and UFC fans are also losers in this because their venues were fun places to watch fights. They have intimate venues that are nothing like the arenas the UFC uses for some of their bigger pay-per-views and Fox shows.

It was perfect for "The Ultimate Fighter" finale and Ultimate Fight Night events. Fans could get closer to the action. Diego Sanchez's memorable win over Clay Guida sticks out as one of the fights that was perfect for the Palms. Every punch, every blood drop that flew, every kick was clear to every fan in the venue.

Undefeated fighter plans to get married, then fight on the same day

Louisiana fighter Kurt Holobaugh has had a very hot start to his mixed martial arts career. He has rattled off eight straight wins with seven professional fights and one amateur. To keep his hot streak going, Holobaugh will fight at Fight Force International's event in Biloxi, Miss., on Saturday.

Earlier that day, he has a little bit of business to take care of. He is going to get married on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. The best part is that it was her idea.

"It was my wife's idea," Holobaugh told MMA Fighting. "Biloxi's a pretty city and she's a fan of the beach, so we're going to have a minister do a ceremony there. When we get home, we'll do a big reception and have family and team members down here. It should be good, it will be good to come home married and with a victory and celebrate."

Holobaugh is very smart to marry this woman. For the fighters out there, if you find a partner who shares your love of the sport so much that the wedding and a fight can fall on the same day, you lock it down.

A bantamweight bout between T.J. Dillashaw (6-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and Mike Easton (13-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) has been verbally agreed to for December’s “UFC on FOX 5: Henderson vs. Diaz” event in Seattle.

Dillashaw will be looking to earn his third straight UFC win on December 8th. The Team Alpha Male product has most recently posted victories over Vaughan Lee and Walel Watson. Dillashaw’s lone career loss came at “The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale” where he was upset by John Dodson.

Bellator 78 Results: Lyman Good, Andrey Koreshkov move on to welterweight final

Despite some controversy surrounding the placement of champion Zoila Gurgel on the lineup, Bellator 78 delivered a solid dose of entertainment thanks to a number of other notable appearances on the main card. Slated for scraps tonight in Ohio, Bellator stars Daniel Straus and Brian Rogers saw action in addition to the show featuring welterweight semifinal bouts between Marius Zaromskis-Andrey Koreshkov and Lyman Good-Michail Tsarev.

Straus, a former featherweight tournament finalist and one of the brightest 145ers outside of the UFC‘s roster, looked sharp en route to a second round submission of opponent Alvin Robinson. Straus maintained a relentless pace, grinding Robinson down until the right opportunity appeared for a fight-ending Rear-Naked Choke.

Meanwhile, Rogers did his best to end Dominique Steele‘s evening with strikes in hopes of earning his ninth knockout in ten total wins. However, Steele showed a ton of durability throughout their tilt, eating some stiff blows but hanging on to ultimately lose a decision.

In tournament action, Koreshkov likely surprised a number of viewers with his crisp stand-up and maybe even Zaromskis too as it turned out. The former DREAM champ never got off any real shots in the bout, as the unbeaten Russian showed superiority from start to finish, dropping Zaromskis in the opening round and pounding him out for the TKO win.

Facing Koreshkov for the right to compete against divisional champ Ben Askren will be Good who also earned a strike-based stoppage in his respective rumble. The finish came in the second stanza after Tsarev complained of an eye-poke and Good pounced, firing off a combo with one strike putting Tsarev on his backside to draw the referee’s attention for the TKO victory.

Last but certainly not least, Gurgel got back to business by picking up a hard-fought decision win over Casey Noland. The bout was back-and-forth at times though “The Warrior Princess” got the better of nearly every striking exchange and scored with mat-work as well.

Read below for a full list of Bellator 78 results:

Bigfoot Crushes Travis Browne at UFC on FX: “Browne vs. Bigfoot”

Brazilian behemoth Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva came into his UFC on FX bout against Travis Browne riding a two-fight losing streak, but the 266-pound heavyweight employed his fists — particularly, a massive right hand — to right his course and notch a much-needed win via technical knockout in the early half of the first round.

Of course, it helped that Browne — himself 246 pounds and on a three-fight win streak — injured his knee with the very first high-kick he threw.  To Browne's credit, the bum knee didn't visibly manifest itself until about a minute in, by which point he'd already picked at the former EliteXC champ with low-kicks from the outside and squirmed out of a potentially deadly tie-up against the cage.  But with each subsequent step Browne grew more and more hobbled, and sensing vulnerability, Bigfoot lunged in and planted his fist squarely against Browne's jawline.  The smaller man crumpled against the cage, and when Bigfoot followed up with a barrage of punches, referee Herb Dean wasted no time jumping in.

The stoppage was official at 3:27 of the first round.

With the win, Antonio Silva reestablishes himself as a force in the UFC's heavyweight division.

Junior dos Santos: "I'm ready to submit someone to really show how good I am in my jiu-jitsu."

There are only a few constants when it comes to the build towards fights featuring Junior dos Santos, but one of them is the answer to questions about he plans on approaching his adversary. Since starching Fabricio Werdum at UFC 90 in his Octagon unveiling, Dos Santos has said he was always there to do one thing – knock people out.

According to the hard-hitting Brazilian, his second fight with Cain Velasquez will be no exception even if he’s ready for anything the former title-holder may throw at him.

“That time it was perfect for me. My first strategy is always to knock my opponents out and I will try to do that again. I know Cain Velasquez, I respect him a lot. He’s really tough. But I will give my best to win this fight, it doesn’t matter where,” Dos Santos recently told MMA Live. “Of course I want to knock him out but if the fight goes to the ground, I will be ready to submit him too.”

Fans might have a lack of reference when it comes to the ground acumen of Dos Santos, but the Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira-trained brown belt wants folks to know he is always working on his ground game.

“I train a lot of jiu-jitsu, Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I’m working on my takedown defense. I know he’s a really good wrestler and he’s going to try to take me down and use his ground-n-pound where he’s very good but if the fight goes to the ground, I’m ready,” Dos Santos reiterated. “Like I said, I’m ready to submit someone to really show how good I am in my jiu-jitsu.”

In his first fight with Velasquez, “Cigano” took his heavyweight title home after 64 seconds of cage time. If he comes out the winner for the second time, Dos Santos said he expects to fight the currently-suspended Alistair Overeem even if he’s not necessarily happy about the prospect.

“Dana White already said the winner from me and Velasquez is going to fight Overeem,” began the 28-year old before adding, “I don’t think he deserves to be fighting for the title because he failed the drug test (but) I want to fight this guy because he said a lot of things and I want to fight with the best. If he thinks he’s one of them, I want to fight him.”

Overeem Predicts Velasquez Will Beat Dos Santos

Dos Santos will get in the octagon with Velasquez on December 29 at UFC 155. In the co-main event former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin will face Phil Davis and also on the card is a possible middleweight number one contender bout between Chris Weidman-Tim Boetsch.

TUF 16 Weekly Recap - Episode 6

The episode begins with the fallout from last week’s fights. Dana walks into Nic Herron-Webb’s locker room to tell him that he thinks he was [expletive]. Roy agrees that Nic was robbed, but offers the old saying “you can’t let it go to the judges.” While Dana is comforting (in his own way), Roy takes the opportunity to criticize Nic’s performance. A few of the Team Nelson members don’t understand why Roy is kicking the guy while he’s down. Julian Lane tells us that he thinks Roy doesn’t understand how to be a coach because he’s still a fighter.

At the house the guys discuss the styles of their respective coaches. The ever open-minded Matt Secor tells us that his coach Shane is, “The most caring dude ever,” and the fact that Roy doesn’t use the same kid gloves in defeat means that he’s only in this for himself. Who knew that guys who fight grown men in a cage for money could be so sensitive?

The shenanigans at the house continue when Julian Lane and Colton Smith steal Team Nelson’s chicken out of the refrigerator and eat it. The justification they give is that, “we were hungry,” and frankly, it's like Les Mis in a McMansion. The great TUF chicken scandal escalates as Matt Secor accuses Michael Hill of the theft and Hill takes offense. This leads to the usual usual frat house-style confrontation:

Party One: Excuse me sir, I find your accusations to be warrantless.

Party Two: Well, I apologize if offense was taken, but I firmly stand behind my statements.

Party One: Do you? Seeing that we have come to an impasse, I believe the only logical conclusion is that we should engage in fisticuffs to determine the winner of our disagreement.

Party Two: To be honest, I find this recourse to perpetuate the classic ad bellum logical fallacy, but I would happily engage in a physical altercation.

I may have taken some liberties with the encounter, but you get the idea.

After a break, it’s time for the fight announcement. Coach Carwin tells us that his fighter Eddy Ellis will take on Team Nelson’s Colton Smith. Carwin believes that Eddy will be able to take Colton down easily and work his ground and pound. Coach Nelson says that Eddy isn’t outstanding at any one skill and that Colton's outstanding wrestling will make the difference.

Back at the the house we hear the Eddy Ellis story. He started competing in MMA when he was 16 years old. When discussing his professional record (17-15-1), he admits that it’s not the best. He says that he took fights for the experience instead of winning. I take that as code for, “I liked the money,” but I could be wrong (but I’m probably not). He also credits his wife for making him a better fighter and I’m sure every married man would agree.

At the Team Carwin training session we run into to UFC vet Eliot Marshall again. This time he’s showing some ground and pound skills which will aid Eddy in his game plan. Eddy doesn’t see this fight ending up on the ground, though. He predicts that he’ll hurt Colton on the feet, stuff his takedowns and further frustrate him until he gets the finish.

Next we hear from Colton Smith. Raised in Iowa, he calls himself a “bad kid” whose mother used sports to keep him out of trouble. He excelled in wrestling and expanded those skills when he joined the Army where he is now a combatives instructor at Fort Hood. He feels that though Ellis has had a lot of wars inside a cage, Smith's military experience gives him the edge because he knows what a real war is like. This is repeated approximately 70 times by Smith and his coaches. During his training sessions, though, he feels uncomfortable with the coaches’ strategy for him. Along with Julian Lane, he decides to just do what he wants and stick to the tactics that have carried him thus far.

Fight Day

After some more bravado from the two competitors, it’s fight day. Round one begins with Colton quickly getting the double underhooks and a takedown. When he tries to open up and deliver some damage, Eddy is able to stand up and escape. After a couple short exchanges, Colton shoots again. He brings Eddy to the mat, but the two are up standing again shortly. As Colton comes forward, he eats a big right cross from Ellis that wobbles him. Eddy puts Colton on his back and soon moves to take his back. Colton defends an armbar attempt, stands up and is bleeding noticeably from his right brow. Another brief exchange and Ellis catches Colton with a crisp standing elbow. Wobbled again, Colton is back on his back and defending. He’s able to stand up and put Eddy against the fence, but with 30 seconds left the round soon ends.

In between rounds, Roy tries to give Colton some directions. He tells him to stop standing and trading with Eddy and go to his single leg takedown. Colton responds with, “Uh, could you say it one more time?”

Round two begins and Colton shoots immediately. He’s able to advance his position and starts dropping some nasty short elbows. He winds up cutting Ellis and continues to smother him. This continues for most of the round until Herb Dean bizarrely stands the two up with about 50 seconds left. There are a couple of exchanges and Colton even manages to daze Eddy, but the round ends with everyone expecting a third.

Everyone that is...except the judges. Dana can’t believe it, but Colton Smith winds up winning a majority decision victory due to two judges scoring the second round 10-8. Back in the locker rooms, Eddy doesn’t want any empty pats on the back and Colton wants some pictures of the cut over his right eye.

The episode ends and we get a preview of next week. What words of wisdom does Forrest Griffin have to share? Why is the next fight the most controversial of the season? Who’s the culprit that steals Roy Nelson’s Cheetos? Find out next week on The Ultimate Fighter!

UFC 153 PPV: 340-410K buys

Earlier this week Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer reported that the preliminary PPV rate for UFC 153 is in the range of 340,000 to 410,000 buys.  This would make UFC 153 the highest rated PPV in Brazil in recent history.

UFC 134 – 335,000 buys (Silva vs. Okami main event)
UFC 142 – 235,000 buys (Aldo vs. Mendes main event)
UFC 147 – 190,000 buys (Franklin vs. W. Silva main event)
UFC 153 – ~340K-410K buys (Silva vs. Bonnar main event)

Payout Perspective:

If the numbers hold true, this should be considered a successful card considering the amount of shuffling that went on to keep this card together.  Moreover, the addition of Silva and Big Nog probably meant more PPV buys than an Aldo-Koch or an Aldo-Edgar card.  Even though Edgar is a popular fighter, his main event PPV card history does not equate to buys.

Mike Easton mixing it up with T.J. Dillashaw at UFC on FOX 5

Two of the bantamweight division’s rising stars are set to scrap in December as part of UFC on FOX 5, as Mike Easton and TJ Dillashaw have agreed to face off on the preliminary portion of the card. Both men will enter the bout with a winning streak on the line in addition to any hopes of fighting for the title in 2013.

UFC officials have confirmed the clash.

The 13-1 Easton has emerged with his hand raised in eight straight outings including a trio of tilts inside the Octagon. “The Hulk” was last seen outpointing Ivan Menjivar in July.

A Closer Look at Easton’s Win Over Menjivar

Dillashaw has also only tasted defeat a single time in his career, holding a 6-1 mark with perhaps his most impressive performance to date coming at UFC on Fuel 4 where he submitted Vaughan Lee halfway through the opening round.

The December8 show is headlined by lightweight champion Benson Henderson putting his belt on the line against polished pugilist Nate Diaz. Other notable bouts include BJ Penn-Rory MacDonald and Mauricio Rua-Alexander Gustafsson.

"Bigfoot" Silva wants to fight Alistair Overeem, says "even if he was created in the lab, I can beat him"

Bigfoot_Silva_wide.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Prior to Zuffa's purchase of Strikeforce last year, the organization's Heavyweight World Grand Prix was set to feature several major fights in the division. Though Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva's upset of Fedor Emelianenko in the opening round closed the door on a bout between "The Last Emperor" and then-Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem, Silva himself got in line for that fight.

Then, after Zuffa purchased the organization, things fell apart with the tournament. The second set of quarterfinals didn't happen until June (though that was as much Strikeforce's fault pre-Zuffa), and then Overeem was removed from the tournament when he couldn't turn around in three months to fight Silva. Now, as Overeem readies for his return to the Octagon once he can get licensed at the end of December, Silva once again wants that fight.

"Bigfoot" made his UFC debut in May, getting destroyed by current No. 1 contender and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez. However, he rebounded in a big way earlier this month, knocking out Travis Browne in the main event of UFC on FX 5, handing the rising Browne his first career defeat. In an interview with MMAJunkie.com this week, Silva made it clear that he wants the fight with Overeem badly, and he's not concerned with anything Overeem may or may not have done with performance enhancing drugs in the past.

"If Overeem really doesn't want to have to wait for a fight after his suspension is up, I am here ready to welcome him," Silva said. "I respect him as an athlete. After all, he was K-1, DREAM and Strikeforce champion. But I am not worried about titles or belts right now."

"Overeem is big and strong, but I know I can beat him. Even if he was created in the lab, I can beat him."

The UFC has said Overeem will get the next title shot after Velasquez fight Junior dos Santos at UFC 155, but he'd prefer to return to action right away as soon as he can apply for his license on Dec. 27. Silva's more than willing to oblige and give him that return fight, and though he respects Overeem's skills as a fighter, he added one more comment aimed at the Dutch striker.

"To me, Overeem is among the best fighters in the world, and I want to always fight the best," Silva said. "Of course, where I come from – Paraiba, in Brazil – our supplement of choice is molasses, and our strength is our attitude and we will fight whoever, whenever. Let's see if Overeem can say the same."

Penick's Analysis: With Daniel Cormier stuck in Strikeforce for now, Overeem-Silva is probably the right fight to make. Overeem wants to get back into action, and most would prefer to see him win a fight before jumping into a title shot after his failed drug test and everything that went along with that this year. He doesn't want to sit out for 15 months or longer, and Silva's coming off a major win. It's a fight that was supposed to happen last September, and it's still an interesting matchup. That's the fight to make right now, and it will be highly interesting if they get it together.

'UFC 154: St-Pierre vs. Condit' fight card and extended video preview

The UFC returns to Canada next month for UFC 154, featuring a welterweight title unification bout between champion Georges St-Pierre and interim titleholder Carlos Condit.

The pay-per-view event takes place Nov. 17 at the Bell Centre in St-Pierre's home city of Montreal. St-Pierre is a 3.5-to-1 favorite over Condit in the fight.

In anticipation of the pay-per-view headliner, plus a fight between Johny Hendricks and Martin Kampmann, the UFC has released an extended preview video for the event.
