UFC 161 in Winnipeg adds Pierson vs. Waldburger, Stout vs. Vallie-Flagg

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_270.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Two more fights are headed to the UFC 161 card in Winnipeg this June, as the UFC announced on Wednesday that welterweights Sean Pierson and T.J. Waldburger will square off, as will lightweights Sam Stout and Isaac Vallie-Flagg.

Pierson was supposed to return to the cage in Montreal this month at UFC 158, but an injury forced him out of a matchup against Rick Story. He'll now return in June, hoping to extend his current two-fight winning streak.

Waldburger's won three of his last four fights, and four of six overall in the UFC, with losses coming against Johny Hendricks and Brian Ebersole. In that stretch, he's scored three submission wins, including his last fight where he choked out Nick Catone with a triangle choke at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale.

Stout will make his 16th appearance inside the Octagon, entering the event off a contested split decision win against Strikeforce import Caros Fodor at UFC 157 last month. He'll now meet another Strikeforce import in Vallie-Flagg, but this one's got a UFC win under his belt.

Vallie-Flagg, who won both of his fights in Strikeforce before making his UFC debut, extended his current unbeaten streak to 12 fight when he beat Yves Edwards at UFC 156. He's won his last three fights by split decision.

UFC 161 will mark the UFC's debut in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, taking place on June 15 with an Interim Bantamweight Championship bout between Renan Barao and Eddie Wineland in the night's main event.

UFC 161 officially heads to Winnipeg on June 15; Shogun vs. Nogueira confirmed

RuaShogun_Wide_6.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The UFC is officially headed to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada this June. In a press conference in Winnipeg on Tuesday, UFC Director of Operations in Canada Tom Wright announced that UFC 161 will emanate from the MTS Centre on June 15.

Though Wright said the UFC wasn't prepared to announce a main event for the card, he did confirm a previously reported bout between Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. That fight will take place on the night's main pay-per-view card.

Tickets for the event will go on sale to the general public on Friday, April 12, with presales to UFC Fight Club members on April 10 and UFC Newsletter subscribers on April 11.

The UFC 161 event will be one of three events in Canada in 2013, one less than the UFC initially planned for the year. They will head to Montreal next week with UFC 158, then Winnipeg in June, and finally in Toronto in September.

They were planning a fourth event for the year, but Wright said that was tied to an "Ultimate Fighter: Canada" that has been pushed into 2014.

Video: Strikeforce's Larkin lashes out at Rockhold's withdrawal, questions UFC timing

Lorenz Larkin said injuries could excuse him from Strikeforce's final card.

The middleweight today told MMAjunkie.com Radio he's accumulated all the bumps and bruises that come with four months of training.

Yet Larkin wouldn't think of bowing out like his opponent did. He said he needs to fight every five months, or he creates problems for his girlfriend and everyone else around.

UFC Returns to Brazil for Rockhold vs. Belfort

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will return to Brazil for the second time in 2013 on May 18, as the Jaragua Arena in Jaragua do Sul, Santa Catarina, will host UFC on FX 8: Rockhold vs. Belfort. In the main event, MMA legend Vitor Belfort returns to the Octagon after his victory in January at UFC Sao Paulo, where he knocked out Michael Bisping. Belfort faces Luke Rockhold, the outgoing middleweight champion of Strikeforce, who rides a series of nine wins.

In the co-main event, former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo "Jacare" faces Cypriot Constantinos "Costa" Philippou.

Seven other fights have been confirmed for the event, all of them featuring Brazilian stars squaring off against competitors from around the world:

Cezar "Mutante" Ferreira vs. CB Dollaway - middleweight
Rafael dos Anjos vs. Evan Dunham - lightweight
Francisco "Massaranduba" Trinaldo vs Mike Rio - lightweight
Paulo Thiago vs. Lance Benoist - welterweight
John Lineker vs Azamat Gashimov - flyweight
Fabio Maldonado vs. Roger Hollet - light heavyweight
Gleison Tibau vs. John Cholish - lightweight

"This is the fourth Brazilian state that we have the joy of visiting and another great achievement for the UFC," said Grace Tourinho, spokesperson for UFC in Brazil. "Brazilian fans still have many good things to expect from us in 2013, including live events, the next season of The Ultimate Fighter Brasil and the opening of a UFC headquarters in the country."

"Fighting in Brazil is always very good, and I'm honored to fight in the third different state in my country," said Belfort, who will be looking to earn his fourth win in his home country.

Jordan Mein: Introducing Canada's Next Welterweight Contender

UFC welterweight Jordan MeinIn a sport where experience and age are the two metrics used when determining if a fighter can be deemed a “prospect” or not, Jordan Mein makes the task a little more complicated than usual.

On one hand, the Lethbridge, Alberta native is just 23 years old, well within the acceptable age range for wearing the popular descriptor. On the other, one look at his resume shows that the UFC newcomer isn’t short on experience, having racked up 26 wins and 34 fights since beginning his career with a first-round loss to Rory MacDonald in June 2006.

Next Saturday night at UFC 158 in Montreal, the talented young welterweight will make his first trip into the Octagon to face off with Dan Miller. It’s a moment every fighter begins their career hoping to experience, and one that will mark the successful end of a well-executed plan concocted by Mein and head coach, manager, and father Lee.

“It’s super, super-exciting,” said the soft-spoken fighter on the verge of making his UFC debut. “The time is finally here, and I think I’ve fought the right people, and put in the right work, so it’s all paying off. All my goals are kind of manifesting themselves and I’m super-excited.”

Over the last few years, Mein has announced himself as someone to watch in the 170-pound ranks by repeatedly stepping into the cage with established veterans and recognizable names.

A six-fight winning streak that included wins over UFC veterans Joe Riggs and Josh Burkman, and former DREAM champion Marius Zaromskis earned him the opportunity to compete in Strikeforce. In his debut, the creative Canadian striker earned an impressive stoppage victory over former title challenger Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, finishing the menacing Brazilian with a barrage of standing elbows in the third round.

After coming out on the wrong side of a split decision against Tyron Woodley, Mein rebounded with a decision win over Tyler Stinson before defeating another UFC veteran, Forrest Petz, in a fight under the Score Fighting Series banner in November.

“I think it has come together really nicely, and I’ve gotten to fight some top guys,” Mein said of his steady climb towards his first fight inside the Octagon. “I’m not one of those guys that hasn’t really fought anybody, and then I get in the UFC and I’m fighting Dan Miller. If I hadn’t really fought top guys or trained with top guys -- I think that gets people in trouble, but I don’t think I’m in that position. I think I’m ready for the best in the organization.

“Fighting those guys really puts that extra thing in your mind where you know you can beat the top guys, and how good you feel when you’re fighting them or if you’re finishing them. That really gives you some confidence, rather than knowing you fought guys that are 1-0 or 0-1, and you have an undefeated record. I think that really helps in the long run.

“Some guys do it and still go to the top – they still win – so I think it’s to each their own, but for myself, personally, it has really been key to my career.”

Not only has the amount of in-ring experience Mein has been able to accrue over his already seven-plus-year-long career been of great benefit to him, but his opportunity to headline a number of events in Canada and go through the rigors associated with being the biggest name on the marquee have also prepared him for life on the UFC roster.

While welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre made up half of the headlining act for the first UFC event in Ontario when he faced Jake Shields at UFC 129, Mein earned top billing on the first event held within Canada’s most populous province, defeating Burkman at the aptly named “MMA 1: The Reckoning” event in Orillia, Ontario on April 2, 2011.

“I think that is going to be a big advantage for me,” Mein suggested of his level of comfort with the media obligations, increased attention, and new situations that come with fight week. “Having been on that stage, having been on TV across America, and across Canada as well with the Score Fighting Series, having all that media exposure – if you’ve never done it before, it can take a toll on you.

“It’s given me experience, and it’s really put me in the right frame of mind, and the right attitude. I still have so much to learn when I go to the UFC and experience those new things as well, but I think it has done nothing but help.”

All of that experience has him uniquely prepared for the next chapter of his career, which starts in full next Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal when he steps into the cage the elder half of New Jersey’s version of “The Fighting Miller Brothers” in the middle of the televised portion of the preliminary card.

Not many 23-year-olds get to walk into the UFC and make their debut against someone as seasoned and established as Miller, a fact that is not lost on the promising Canadian prospect.

“He’s fought 11 times in the UFC, and he’s fought a bunch of the top guys, so I’m super-excited to compete with a guy like that. Getting a win over a guy like that really catapults me into the UFC, and helps me start building a good name for myself.

“I think we’re on Sportsnet too,” added Mein, referencing the sports network that is home to UFC programming in Canada. “People know who Dan Miller is. Not too many people know who I am yet, but fighting someone that has a name is important; it’s much better than fighting someone no one knows who is just as dangerous.

“He’s a tough opponent, and I’m glad I got a tough opponent with a name. Everybody in the UFC is solid and not going to be easy to beat, so facing someone with good credentials in the organization is super-important.”

In the wake of the recent cuts that purged the roster of more than a dozen fighters, there has been increased discussion about the need for competitors to entertain when they’re in the cage. Luckily for Mein, that has never been a problem.

His striking repertoire includes an array of elbow strikes, and spinning attacks along with the standard compliment of punches and kicks, and 21 of his 26 career wins have come by way of stoppage. The Canadian Martial Arts Centre representative is ultra-aggressive inside the cage, willing to stand in the pocket and trade shots, confident he’ll get the better of the exchanges in the end, without being careless.

“There’s a fine line between going all out and being reckless or doing something stupid,” laughed Mein, addressing his offensive approach and the added pressure to deliver a fan-friendly fight that continues to mount.

“People want to see entertaining fights – you want to win, and you want to be entertaining – but at the same time, there is that really thin line between running in at someone with your hands down trying to be exciting or going out of your element, rather than sticking to your own game plan; being a smart fighter rather than trying to be crazy the entire time.

“Finding that line and just stepping over it is what brings those entertaining fights together. That’s the tough thing about the fight game – those mental battles and those physical battles – and that’s why winning feels so good; overcoming all those things.”

After having proven his mettle on the regional circuit and made his way to the big leagues, Mein is intent on following in the footsteps of his fellow Strikeforce graduates this weekend by delivering an action-packed performance in his debut, and establishing himself as someone fans look forward to seeing through what the Canadian newcomer hopes will be a busy year.

“I think the fans can expect entertainment when we get in there next weekend. I think I bring entertainment to the fight game and a new face in the UFC. I can’t wait to be on a ton of UFC cards, and have a great 2013.”

NSAC's Keith Kizer says UFC's Vitor Belfort has not, and likely will not, be granted TUE for TRT in Nevada

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_265.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

When the UFC went to Brazil in January, Vitor Belfort received a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone replacement therapy into his bout with Michael Bisping. That event was overseen by CABMMA, a new regulatory body in Brazil that worked in tandem with the UFC to put on the event.

In a report from Brazil's Tatame.com, the CABMMA medical director claimed that Belfort's TRT approval was based off of medical tests done by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. It was their approval, he claimed, that allowed Belfort to use the controversial treatment for the event in Brazil.

However, NSAC executive director Keith Kizer says Belfort has not been approved for testosterone use in Nevada, and given his past steroid test failure, likely would not be approved in Nevada in the future.

"People in the media saying Vitor Belfort has a TUE from me, of course he doesn't," Kizer made clear in an interview with Damon Martin at BleacherReport.com.

"I don't see Vitor Belfort getting a TRT exemption from us. I really don't and I feel kind of bad for him in some ways because if he has learned from his mistakes and now he's trying to do it the right way and his levels are low with the treatment good for him and I hope he is doing that."

Penick's Analysis: Obviously there's something not kosher with the explanation from CABMMA and the UFC's allowance of Belfort's TRT use into the Bisping fight. Given he's fighting again in Brazil in May, we'll have to see whether or not Dana White is serious about the TRT issue. Belfort was not approved by the NSAC, meaning it was essentially the UFC allowing him to use it in January. Having been caught for steroids in the past, he should not be allowed to use TRT now, but it seems that's what's happening anyway, and Kizer's comments on Belfort here fly in the face of any arguments that have been made from the UFC, or this Brazilian commission, regarding Belfort.

WWE Monday Night Raw TV report (airdate July 23, 2012)

The Big News: Raw celebrated its 1000th episode with a star studded collection of returning wrestlers and a memorable CM Punk heel turn.
Show Analysis:
They premiered a new WWE logo video to start, reading “then,” “now,” and “forever.” The show then featured video of Raw moments throughout the years. There was plenty of good stuff in there, but also a heavy emphasis on the ridiculous and on celebrity guest hosts. They have a new set on the stage too. It looks good and is basically the same as before.
Vince McMahon came out next and thanked the fans for 1,000 episodes of Raw. The crowd chanted “thank you Vince” back. Vince then did the old “Welcome to Monday Night Raw” line that he used at the start of all the early episodes of the program. It was an appropriate start as I always liked that intro. He introduced DX.
Shawn Michaels and Triple H came out, doing the more recent version of DX with the glow sticks and merchandise. Michaels said it felt like they were missing something. HHH pointed out there used to be more of them. That got a big crowd reaction. HHH and Michaels pointed to the entrance way and X-Pac, Road Dogg and Billy Gunn came out in a jeep like the Norfolk WCW invasion. They all looked good.
Road Dogg did the old New Age Outlaws intro but wouldn’t say ass. HHH then did the old Are you Ready routine. HHH made a crack about being the only one left with a full head of hair, which broke up X-Pac. HHH said he’d see everyone for Raw 2,000. Billy Gunn and Shawn Michaels disagreed about who would get to get their spot in next. HHH said they didn’t want Shawn to lose his smile and pose in Playgirl. Michaels responded that he needed the money. Gunn and Michaels were about to do it again when Damien Sandow interrupted.
Sandow belittled DX. Michaels said he would go to a church and beg for forgiveness. Sandow said he knew DX could kick his ass, but that would make him a martyr for everyone who appreciated a sophisticated mind. DX huddled to decide what to do. Michaels then gave Sandow sweet chin music and HHH gave him the pedigree. Gunn said if you’re not down with that, they have two words for you. This was a very fun segment. It was funny and you could tell everyone was having a blast.
Sheamus, Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio beat Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler and Chris Jericho. Jim Ross came out commentate for this match but then unfortunately left. The heels worked over Cara, who tagged Sheamus. Sheamus avoided attempts at the Walls and code breaker but Jericho avoided the Brogue kick. Ziggler then took a cheap shot on Jericho and Sheamus hit the Brogue kick on Jericho for the pin. Clearly, Chris Jericho vs. Dolph Ziggler is the next program and hopefully it helps take Ziggler to a higher level.
After the match, the announcers spoke with Charlie Sheen via Skype. He appeared a few times during the show, putting over the things that happened. Backstage, A.J. told Layla she doesn’t know why people call her mentally unstable when the whole place is nuts. She opened a door to Jim Duggan, Roddy Piper and R. Truth jumping rope with Truth’s imaginary friend, and Mae Young with a guy in a hand suit claiming to be Young’s grown up son. Michael Cole did the exaggerated fake laugh for the lame comedy.
Brodus Clay beat Jack Swagger immediately with a splash. Dude Love cornered Clay and danced with him after the match. They cut to backstage, where Trish Stratus was trying to talk HHH into yoga. HHH was bending over with Stratus behind him when DX came in. This appeared to be playing off a similar gag HHH and Stratus did years back, but they seemed reluctant to be overt with the gag.
The 9PM hour featured the A.J.-Daniel Bryan wedding. Slick was the reverend for the ceremony but didn’t get much of a reaction. The crowd chanted what at him and then no at Bryan and A.J. They both said yes, but A.J. said she wasn’t saying yes to Bryan but to someone else who made a proposal to her earlier in the night. Vince McMahon’s music hit but Vince said it wasn’t that kind of proposal. Vince said he made A.J. a business proposal and she is the new permanent GM of Raw. A.J. skipped around and left. This wasn’t the best of payoffs.
After a commercial break, Bryan was flipping out in the ring. CM Punk came out to make fun of Bryan and say that he’s still the best in the world. Bryan said not only is he better than Punk, but he is the greatest WWE superstar of all time. That brought out Rock. Rock said Bryan doesn’t get to say who the greatest of all time is because the people do. Bryan started to interrupt Rock. Rock stopped him and pointed out he won his first WWE title in St. Louis.
Rock said he wasn’t there to talk about Frodo (Bryan) but the title. Rock announced that he will challenge the WWE champion for the title at the Royal Rumble. This got a shockingly non-existent reaction and I don’t really have any explanation why. It’s smart that they announced this on a heavily viewed show to get people thinking about ordering the Rumble next year. Punk vowed to be champion at that point and beat Rock at the Rumble.
Bryan flipped out again and said this was supposed to be the greatest night of his life. He said he will be champion at Rumble and the face of WWE. Rock made fun of Bryan’s height some more, calling him an Oompa Loompa and Hobbit. Rock said he got Bryan a wedding gift and gave Bryan the rock bottom.
On the one hand, you could argue this segment elevated Bryan by having him interact with Rock and thus presenting him as someone important. On the other, you could argue Bryan was presented as a joke and mocked for his height. I guess I’m somewhere in between. I think they could build on this in a way to make Bryan more important but it also could end up more of a negative than a positive.
Bret Hart came out to introduce the Intercontinental title match. He mentioned that one of his greatest moments was winning the IC title from the great Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig. Miz then beat Christian to win the IC title. Miz avoided the kill switch but Christian hit a sunset flip off the second rope for two. Miz went after Christian’s leg. Christian went for the kill switch but Miz avoided it again. Miz went for the skull crushing finale but Christian avoided that and tried the kill switch a third title. Miz avoided it yet again and Christian landed gingerly on his leg. Miz then hit the skull crushing finale for the pin. Miz sold winning the title big, which was a nice touch.
The 10PM hour break featured the HHH-Brock Lesnar angle. HHH came to the ring. He said he wants to fight Lesnar at SummerSlam and wants his answer. Paul Heyman came out. HHH said he wanted to speak to the horse’s head, not the horse’s ass. Heyman said Lesnar’s answer is no. HHH threatened to go find Lesnar. Heyman said that would mean a third lawsuit against WWE. HHH suggested Lesnar is a coward. Heyman mocked HHH for name calling and asked if he teaches his kids to do that.
HHH knocked the microphone from Heyman’s hand and told Heyman not to talk about his kids. Heyman said he shouldn’t talk about them because the sins of the father will be visited upon the children. That brought out Stephanie McMahon. They openly acknowledged her as HHH’s wife and the mother of his children. Stephanie told Heyman not to speak about her kids. Stephanie said the lawsuits aren’t about Lesnar but Heyman’s business failings in WCW, ECW and WWE. Stephanie said compared to Vince, Heyman is in the rearview mirror. Where does that leave Stephanie? Stephanie added that at least Vince had the guts to wrestle HHH, which isn’t true of Lesnar.
Stephanie went further, saying that Heyman’s children are ashamed of him because their father is a professional parasite. She slapped Heyman. Heyman got mad and said Lesnar-HHH is on. Heyman realized he had been baited and said Stephanie always gets what she wants, just like Vince taught her and she teaches her children. Stephanie attacked Heyman. Brock Lesnar finally came out and fought HHH. HHH knocked Lesnar from the ring. I didn’t care for this angle. To me, HHH and Lesnar fighting is a perfectly effective direction and instead they’re building it through Stephanie vs. Heyman and lawsuits. Lesnar-HHH at SummerSlam just doesn’t seem like a big deal at all. Heyman was really great, though.
Lita beat Heath Slater. Howard Finkel introduced Slater. Slater challenged anyone to a no-DQ, no-COR match. Lita came out but said she brought protection. The APA joined her. Slater went to leave but all the legends Slater has fought brought him back to the ring. Lita hit a twist of fate on Slater. Bradshaw gave him a nasty clothesline from hell. Lita then gave him the moonsault for the win. Ron Simmons said damn. This was fun. Slater is perfect for this sort of foil role. There’s something annoying about him that makes it fun to see him get beat up and it isn’t like he has upper card potential.
Sean Mooney of all people interviewed Daniel Bryan backstage. Bryan was angry about the night’s events and complained. He was particularly angry at Charlie Sheen for making fun of him via Skype and said if Sheen were there he would put Sheen in the yes lock. Later, Sheen said he’d be happy to confront Bryan any time in Los Angeles. They teased an appearance by Sheen at SummerSlam, but it didn’t seem like they had a deal for that. I guess we’ll see.
John Cena, Zack Ryder and Gene Okerlund were talking backstage. Ryder thought Okerlund was behind GTV. Rock showed up and Okerlund left. Rock wished Cena good luck. Cena said he wanted another shot at Rock at the Rumble. Rock said he looks forward to that.
Kane came to the ring. He was interrupted by Jinder Mahal, Hunico, Camacho, Curt Hawkins, Tyler Reks and Drew McIntyre. Memo to WWE prelim guys: don’t band together to rise up against main event talent. I’ve seen this one before and it always ends so poorly for you. Mahal said they haven’t been given chances and now they are taking one. They surrounded the ring to attack Kane when Undertaker’s music hit. Undertaker and Kane laid out the other six. They did a double throat slash and double tombstone on Hawkins and Hunico. There was a weird delay for a while, they finally rolled Hawkins and Hunico out of the ring, and they posed together.
In an interesting bit, they asked people on Twitter whether they’d rather see Rock-Cena, Rock-Punk or Rock-Big Show at Rumble. Rock-Punk won handily. I don’t take a Twitter survey to mean much of anything, but I would have expected Rock-Cena to win big and it lost decisively 55-35 (with 10 percent for Show). Rock-Punk interests me more too but Rock-Cena is probably a bigger PPV draw. They’ll probably do one at Mania and the other at the Rumble anyway. Maybe Rock-Punk at Rumble and Rock-Cena plus Punk-Austin at Mania.
John Cena beat CM Punk via DQ. There was a long mat wrestling sequence early. Punk set up for the GTS but Cena shoved Punk into the referee. Cena hit the FU and covered, but there was no referee. Big Show came out and speared Cena. Show then set up for the KO punch with Punk sitting in the corner watching. This was subtle at first, as you could see Punk was conscious and aware of what was going on but wasn’t doing anything. But he was just sort of watching without any facial expression selling what was going on. He let Show hit the KO punch on Cena and Show then left.
At this point, Punk got up and was left with the decision of what to do. He seemed conflicted and seemed to be going back and forth in his head about whether to take advantage of the situation. Punk revived the referee while still seeming torn. Finally, Punk made the decision to go for the pin. He covered Cena, but Cena kicked out. Punk then went for the GTS but Cena reversed into the STF. Show came out and attacked Cena for the DQ.
Show continued beating up Cena after the bell as Punk just watched. Punk finally decided to turn his back and leave. At that point, Rock ran out for the save. Rock went after Show and hit a spine buster. He went for the people’s elbow but Punk ran back in and cut off Rock with a clothesline. Punk looked at his hands intently and then gave Rock the GTS to close the show.
This was a phenomenal heel turn. I’m not sure yet whether this story is a money direction, but Punk was so awesome doing this. Even more so, the writers really deserve credit here. This was just a wonderfully told story, with a man confronted with a tricky moral decision and showing his true character by making the easy wrong move rather than the more difficult right move. He wasn’t a cartoonish villain just being bad for the sake of bad either; he recognized that he was doing the wrong thing but retaining the title meant too much to him to resist. That story is enhanced by the fact Punk has often sermonized over the years in a self-righteous manner, only to have done the wrong thing when the chips were down. It’s one of the better heel turns WWE has ever done, and Punk is better as a heel than a face anyway.
Final Thoughts:
As expected, this was a fun show. It’s hard to bring back all the stars they did and not have it be entertaining. I thought the show was good but kind of underwhelming going into the final segment, but the CM Punk heel turn was a memorable and very well executed finale that elevated the rest of the show.
And that will do it for these reports. It’s really amazing to me how many doors opened up on the writing front since Dave asked me to write more for the Observer website so many years ago. Thanks first and foremost to Dave for the opportunity and more so just for putting out such a phenomenal product that I’ve been reading well over half my life now. My primary motivation for starting to write about wrestling was a simple desire to be associated in some way with Dave.
Thanks also to Bryan for bringing me on board and being so supportive over the years. If it hadn’t been for that support, I would have stopped a long time ago. He’s one of the most genuinely good people I’ve ever known.
Special thanks to Houston Mitchell, who was more supportive than anyone and so important in opening doors for me.
Thanks very much to everyone for reading over the last decade or so and to everyone who has written over the years to say positive things. I appreciate the support.
And finally, thanks to WWE for producing a show that has presented so many great moments over the years. It’s no secret that I have a lot of problems with the current direction of WWE. The years I’ve been writing about the show have coincided with what in my opinion has been a downturn in the quality of the show. But nobody would care about that downturn if it weren’t for the years of goodwill WWE had built with its core audience. Long term fans that have stuck around to this point badly want to like the product and there’s another large group of people that monitor the product on the outside, hoping to hear things have gotten better and it’s worth diving back in. Hopefully sooner rather than later WWE can reengage those fans with an exciting and improved product.

How To Eat Like a UFC Hall of Famer

Everyone wants to be in better shape -- “Most of the questions I get are about training,” says Matt Hughes, recently retired UFC Hall of Famer and current vice president of athlete development. But according to him, it's food that has a bigger impact on your daily performance, whether you're a professional athlete or a corporate cube-dweller.

“I think the diet is an area where some of the younger fighters need help; a proper diet helps you sleep, practice, and perform better in the Octagon.” And now that he's a family man with a "real" job, Hughes still sticks to the same basic dietary guidelines he used when he was fighting.

Here, Hughes' eight basic rules for a healthy diet:

Eat Often
Instead of eating three massive meals per day, Hughes opts for smaller portions that are more spread out. “I’ll have a protein shake and almonds for breakfast, and then a Muscle Milk Cookies and Cream shake after I lift weights in the morning,” he reveals. “I’ll eat lunch between 11:30-12:15 p.m., snack on an apple before picking up my kids at school, and then have a meal between 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.”

Don’t Forget The Fruit

“I eat a lot of apples because they’re convenient to throw in my truck or bag, but I try not to eat them before bed because of the sugar content,” he says. Ideal times to consume fruits are in the morning, before a workout, or as a midday snack.

Consume Catabolic Foods

Convenience aside, Hughes is sweet on apples for another reason — they’re a catabolic food that burns more calories than they contain. “Each apple is only 100 calories, and it takes the body 200 calories to digest that apple,” he tells us. Other examples of catabolic foods: strawberries, plums, blueberries, grapes, lettuce, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, spinach, carrots, crayfish, mussels, lobster and shrimp.

Check Labels
“I look at the protein, carb, and sugar content,” Hughes says. “Sometimes I’ll check sodium as well, but if there are more sugars than good carbs, I don’t have anything to do with it.”

Don’t Demonize Fats
Too much saturated or trans fats can lead to a higher risk of heart disease and raise cholesterol. However, unsaturated fats — polyunsaturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fats — can do the opposite.  Hughes’ preference when it comes to monosaturated fats? Almonds. “I like to have them with breakfast,” he says. “For your body to release fat, you need to take in fat.”

Choose Cheat Meals Wisely
With three young kids (ages 16, 13, and 3) and a “wife with a sweet tooth” in the house, the temptation to snack on something sugary or sweet is always there for Hughes. “My wife loves to bake … but she also works out every morning. So if we have a cheat day, we know the next day we’re going to create a fire hot enough to burn it off.”

Make Water Your Go-To Drink

Alcohol can hinder muscle growth by inhibiting muscle protein synthesis, and sports drinks — although beneficial in replacing lost micronutrients after hard training sessions that last an hour or longer — are often guilty of providing more calories, sodium, and sugar that the body needs. “I’ve always enjoyed a big glass of water,” he admits. “Every so often I have a sweet tea, but I know that’s not great for me so I try not to drink a lot of it. I don’t drink much alcohol. Nothing against it, but with my lifestyle, I’m not around it. A big night for me is getting kids ready for bed and watching some TV.”

Limit Red Meat Intake
Yes, Hughes is an avid hunter, but that doesn't mean he's solely a carnivore. Red meat is high in iron, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin B-12. As noted earlier, it’s also high in saturated fat. Hughes eats red meat sparingly, instead choosing lean meats or fish. “If I’m at a steakhouse, there’s no doubt about it — I’m ordering a good filet,” he says. “[But] many times at restaurants I’ll order fish because I don’t cook it well and I know it’s good for me; I try to eat a couple portions of fish per week.”

"I'm the superhero that's coming with the anti-bulls***", and other gems from the UFC 158 "GSP vs. Diaz" conference call

DiazNate_Wide_19.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The media conference call on Thursday for next week's UFC 158 went from interesting to epic in short order, as both Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre dropped heated comments towards one another. Diaz's frustrations with being branded the villain spilled over into the most heated exchanges, and led to several gems from the UFC Welterweight Champion.

The embedded video below features full audio from today's conference call (The call itself begins at the 7 minute mark, with the most epic portions beginning around the 33 minute mark), along with some choice quotes transcribed by Brian Hemminger at MMAMania.com.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=PuAFgpkzvvU#t=1085s

Diaz on media obligations: "I don't care if there's a crew sitting in the backseat of my car. I don't like what I'm not ready for. You've got Georges and someone's powerding his nose and sending him off for a photo shoot. Someone's doing twitter for him. I don't know how it works out. I'm not in his shoes. I have a little moderate assumption I can make from time to time. I would just like to keep it real and be me. Everyone knows who I am. It's embarrassing not being in control of looking the way you look or coming off the way you want to come off. I'm happy for it when I'm ready for it. My life's a mess. I'm not afraid to admit it. I work hard regardless through this shit. I don't have people toweling me off or handing me water bottles left and right. I have to do that shit on my own and every day I know that I'm doing it on my own and that's why I know I've got to do it that much harder. I don't have people taking care of my money and my financial obligations what have you. All that stuff that people say is important, fuck that. I'm too busy fighting your fights."

Diaz interrupting a question on if GSP is "pampered": "I hope so, if I had that much money I'd be pampered the fuck up. There's be people showing up every hour to pamper me the fuck out. Motherf***er I'm not stupid. I can tell what's what."

GSP fires back: "Uneducated fool. Listen to me. You sound pretty smart right now. I'm not always been like this. I've not always been rich. I started form the bottom. I worked really hard to be where I am right now. I know you don't believe this because you didn't succeed yet and maybe you didn't succeed I your life because I don't think you're smart enough to understand to reach this point. When you talk about people doing things for me, you need people to work for you to get the money rolling... You're not the only jealous guy that's tried to take from me."

Diaz: I'm not jealous. You did the right shit you got to do. You had your fight and you won that fight. I was coming right behind you. I don't mean to be disrespectful. I don't have anything against you when it comes to what your'e doing. I think you're doing a wonderful job for who you are and what you do. I don't have anything against that. I hope so mother fucker because this is some fucked up shit. If I had the money and the right people on my side and mother fuckers dropping dime on this guy and that guy I'd for sure be doing that. Try that shit from when you're 21 to when your 32 and it's a bitch.

GSP: If you are where you are right now and I am where I am, it's not my fault that you didn't succeed.

Diaz: I was never putting any blame and pointing fingers at you that it's your fault. Your'e the one rapping about being pampered or not. You don't what it means.

GSP: I speak English better than you man. Speak to me like a human being.

Diaz: You're out of line straight up. You're f***ing out of line. You understand that right? Your'e rapping that bullshit and you're out of line. I didn't say shit... I deserve to get beat down, that's what you said right? Honestly, I don't think you deserve to get beat down. I don't' want anybody to get beat down. I'd like to win the fight. You know me real well. You know I deserve to get beat down.

Diaz on his comments: I guess I like to think that I'm just talking in my defense. You never know how things are going to come off on video or whatever. I already come off a certain way to people, to the world. You go down that road, there's no going back. As far as what's going ot be written down on paper. I'd like to be known as someone that kept it real. I just don't like that I'm made out to be this evil person that needs to be shot down and needs to be conquered. What the fuck? If anything I'm the superhero that's coming with the anti-bulls***. Are you going ot stick to the bulls*** forever? This is mixed martial arts and this is some boring ass s*** we're watching lately.

UFC 161 in Winnipeg to be headlined by Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland for Interim Bantamweight Title

MMATorch_Generic_Logo_wide_267.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The UFC's debut event in Winnipeg now has its main event, as ESPN.com's Brett Okamoto reports confirmation from UFC President Dana White that the June 15 card will be headlined by an Interim Bantamweight Championship bout between Renan Barao and Eddie Wineland.

Barao captured the Interim Title last summer, defeating Urijah Faber by decision in a close fight. He then extended his unheard of unbeaten streak to 31 in February, defeating Michael McDonald with a fourth round submission in London.

The UFC was hoping Champ Dominick Cruz would be able to return by this summer to combine the two titles, but with his recovery timetable from consecutive knee surgeries still in question, Barao will defend the Interim belt once more.

Eddie Wineland gets the shot as the best bantamweight challenger not named Urijah Faber, and despite a loss to Faber just four fights ago, he rides a little momentum into the fight with Barao. Wineland halted a two-fight losing streak last June, knocking out Scott Jorgensen. He followed that up with a good performance against Brad Pickett at UFC 155 in December, and now he'll get a crack at the Interim Championship.

UFC 161 marks the UFC's first ever event in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and in addition to Barao-Wineland, the card currently features Dan Henderson vs. Rashad Evans, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Tyron Woodley vs. Jake Shields, and Soa Palelei vs. Stipe Miocic.

Bruce Buffer debuts mobile app on Nov. 27, eyes 2013 for clothing line launch

While Dana White is the unquestionable face of the UFC, ring announcer Bruce Buffer has parlayed his role into massive recognition, as well.

Fans at UFC events often mimic his signature calls, and he's stopped on the streets for pictures and autographs as often as any of the promotion's most-respected fighters.

On Nov. 27, Buffer adds to his ever-growing empire with the launch of an "It's Time" app. It could signal the start of a busy stretch for the 55-year-old "veteran voice of the octagon."

Anderson Silva agrees to face Chris Weidman at UFC 162

On behalf of the UFC, Chris Weidman went to the New York state capitol on Wednesday to lobby for mixed martial arts in the Empire state. Perhaps they sent him there after experiencing his efforts first-hand, as it appears that his own previous, personal lobbying for a middleweight title match with Anderson Silva has finally paid off.

According to New York Newsday, Weidman was told by UFC chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta that his request to challenge Silva has finally been accepted, in a fight that will be targeted for UFC 162 on Fourth of July weekend. The event, which will take place on July 6, is to be held in Las Vegas, though the host venue is to be decided.

"Dream come true," Weidman told the paper. "Ever since I've been fighting, Anderson Silva has been the champion and I've been visualizing beating him. Now I have the opportunity. I have to make the most of it."

The 28-year-old Weidman is a perfect 9-0 in his career, but at the time of his fight with Silva, will not have fought for a year. His last bout was in July 2012, when he knocked out Mark Munoz with a standing elbow strike and some ground punches.

Since then, he's been hounding Silva and the UFC for a title fight, but for a time, it seemed as though he wouldn't receive. Late last year, he was linked to a UFC 155 matchup against Tim Boetsch, but eventually withdrew from the bout with a shoulder injury that required surgery. He told Newsday that he was 100 percent and had been cleared to resume training.

He will likely be considered an underdog in the fight as he attempts to become the man to end Silva's lengthy reign at the top of the middleweight division. Silva has never lost in 16 trips to the octagon, and has held the belt since defeating Rich Franklin in October 2006. Due to Weidman's pedigree as a Division I wrestler, along with powerful strikes and a durable chin, many feel that he has the qualities to challenge Silva in a way that no one but Chael Sonnen has been able to do during his dominant UFC run.

UFC to run twelve 'Fight Night' cards on Fox Sports 1 starting from August through end-of-year

Big news for MMA fans broke today, as Fox Sports executives confirmed that the UFC will hold bi-weekly fight cards on the new Fox Sports 1 channel, which will launch on Saturday, August 17th.

Today Fox is formally announcing their plans for their new sports channels. The launch date for Fox Sports 1 is set for Saturday, August 17th of this year, and MMA fans have been wondering what that would mean for the UFC, who will have their FX and Fuel content shifted to the sports networks. Richard Deitsch, who is at the press conference in New York, reported that the UFC will broadcast 12 live cards on Wednesdays through the end of the year:

Richard Deitsch ✔ @richarddeitsch

Fox Sports One will air 12 UFC "Fight Nights" on Wednesdays from Aug 17 through end of year. Bouts will air from 8PM-11PM.

Not all the details have been sorted out or clarified yet. It should also be pointed out that August 17th (launch date) is a Saturday and not a Wednesday. The 12 fight night cards through the end of the calendar year would be roughly one event per two weeks on FS1.

Deitsch also confirmed that UFC Tonight, currently on Fuel TV, will move to Fox Sports 1 and air on Wednesdays from 7:30-8 PM ET.

Fox Sports 1 is expected to be available in 90 million homes nationwide.

The UFC's deal with Fox has just taken a dramatic turn, and that means a rise in free fight cards starting this summer.

Jon Fitch has found a new home.

The former UFC welterweight contender has signed a four-fight contract with World Series of Fighting, the promotion's senior executive vice president Ali Abdel-Aziz confirmed with MMAFighting.com Thursday night. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

According to Abdel-Aziz, Fitch is expected to debut for the promotion at its third event on June 14. He could face the winner of Aaron Simpson vs. Josh Burkman, which will take place at WSOF 2 on March 23, but that has not been set in stone just yet.
The 35-year-old Fitch (24-5-1) was released from the UFC in February following his loss to Demian Maia. The last time he fought outside of the UFC was in July 2005 when he defeated Jeff Joslin via split decision at an event called Freedom Fight.

Cesar Gracie calls bullshit on Dana losing money because of Nick Diaz

http://www.bjpenn.com/exclusive-cesa...+NEWS+BLOGS%29

Wednesday night, Cesar Gracie spoke with BJPenn.com Radio on a number of hot MMA topics. Gracie is the long-time coach of several of the sport’s top fighters, a team that has gained notoriety for its toughness, its tight-knit camaraderie, and its intense training. Three of Gracie’s high-profile athletes have upcoming fights: Nick Diaz will face UFC welterweight champ, Georges St. Pierre, next week; and in April, younger brother Nate Diaz will fight Josh Thomson under the main event featuring Gracie fighter, Gilbert Melendez, challenging the UFC lightweight belt of Benson Henderson.

Outside of UFC news, Gracie also talked about the recent Lloyd Irvin scandals and the impact this has on the jiu jitsu world. He also talked about his own gym, which he is beginning to expand to new territories while maintaining its integrity and devotion to the sport. Never being one to hold his mind, Cesar Gracie delivers some straight answers in this interview.

With the Nick Diaz-GSP fight only one week away, much of the MMA world’s attention has turned toward the fighter from Stockton. With his reputation for disregarding media obligations from the UFC, a lot of drama has been added to the usual pre-fight hype with recent assertions from Dana White that Diaz had missed dates to film the Countdown show.

“When I heard that I was thinking, ‘wait a minute, Nick finished that shoot already,’” said Gracie. “And it came out great. The guys texted me how great of a job Nick did. So I didn’t really know what Dana was talking about. I do know the first day or two, there was a, you know, Nick has a schedule going and he not going to stop his schedule for media; he just doesn’t work that way. You have to do it on his terms, pretty much. But it was in the same time frame, a couple days, and it came out great.”

On Dana White’s estimate that Diaz had cost the UFC $50,000, Cesar Gracie expressed bewilderment. “No way, it’s impossible. The guys that were doing the shoot, the main guy lives in Sacramento, which the drive to Lodi is 45 minutes away. If they’re paying the camera guys that much, they should pay the fighters more. Who the hell gets $50,000 for a couple days? Like I said though, it’s a non-issue. Nick has met his obligations. I mean he went to Montreal! Nick is training very hard and we’re trying to keep the distractions to a minimum.”

We have more from Cesar so stay tuned for part two of this interview or just check out the full audio below:

Stefan Struve: The Heavyweights' Homegrown Monster

UFC heavyweight Stefan StruveFour years ago, tucked away on the preliminary portion of UFC 95, a 21-year-old Dutch kickboxer made his UFC debut against a heavyweight named Junior dos Santos.

In his previous appearance, his first in the UFC, the Brazilian known as “Cigano” had introduced himself to the MMA world with a stunning first-round knockout victory over Fabricio Werdum. After starching a perennial contender in his debut effort, dos Santos became a dark horse contender himself - someone to keep tabs on as he made his way up the heavyweight ranks.

It took less than 60 seconds for dos Santos to earn his second consecutive first-round knockout victory under the UFC banner, another thunderous right hand felling the baby-faced opponent who shared the cage with him that night at the O2 Arena in London, England.

This weekend, that tall, skinny kid from Beverwijk, Netherlands whose UFC career started with a 54-second loss to the former heavyweight champion will step into the Octagon for the 13th time. He’s now 25, with a 29-5 record that includes a 9-3 mark in the UFC, and riding a four-fight winning streak into a co-main event showdown with former PRIDE star Mark Hunt in the UFC’s return to the Saitama Super Arena in Japan.

Once a boy amongst men, Stefan Struve has come a long way in the last four years, and the best is still to come.

“The losses? I don’t care about them anymore,” Struve says of the UFC losses he suffered at the hands of dos Santos, Roy Nelson, and Travis Browne. “The UFC is really the best place for a young guy to learn. You may not become champ right away, but what do you expect from a 21-year-old kid coming into the UFC heavyweight division? You think he’s going to run straight to a title shot? That’s not going to happen.

“In the UFC is where you learn the most, and like I said, those losses – I’m happy those losses happened. I put myself in a position for those guys to hit me the way they did, and that doesn’t happen anymore. We learned from that. We trained so many different things to get my standup better, use my reach more, keep my distance; that’s really starting to play out now.”

Beginning with his initial appearance in the Octagon opposite dos Santos, fans and critics have been waiting for the seven-foot tall Struve to make use of his exceptional length inside the cage.

Early on, the aptly nicknamed “Skyscraper” was too willing to go toe-to-toe with the opposition, who often made their way inside with little resistance. Over his last four fights, however, Struve has showed continued improvement, playing to his strengths, using his height and length to his advantage in wins over Pat Barry, Dave Herman, Lavar Johnson, and Stipe Miocic.

It has all been a learning process for the heavyweight, who has been developing his skills and honing his craft on the biggest stage in the sport.

“The losses made me really look at myself and my fighting, and what needed to be improved the most to go high up in the ranks and keep winning fights,” explains Struve. “I’ve been training with (head coach) Bob (Schreiber) for over 10 years now, and he’s really made me as a fighter. The other trainers just added their qualities, and showed me other things to help me improve even more.

“I’ve been working with Mousid Akhamrane, who is one of the best kickboxing coaches in the world. He’s a multiple time world champion himself, and he’s got a ton of students who he’s turned into world champions. I’m working with Remco Pardoel, who is a UFC veteran, and a pioneer in Europe for MMA. Both my standup and my ground game have improved immensely. I just feel really fit and fresh, and really I’m looking forward to the fight. I’m feeling really good, really confident. I can’t wait to get my fifth win in a row.”

In order to extend his winning streak to five, Struve will need to get through the resurgent Hunt.

Since losing his UFC debut to Sean McCorkle in September 2010, the wildly popular “Super Samoan” has collected three consecutive wins of his own, the most recent of which came last year in the same arena where he’ll face Struve on Saturday night.

At UFC 144, Hunt delighted the Japanese crowd with a first-round knockout win over perennial heavyweight gatekeeper Cheick Kongo. Not bad for a 38-year-old fighter who was expected to happily take a buyout from the UFC several years earlier when they acquired his contract following their purchase of the PRIDE Fighting Championships organization.

“I know what Mark Hunt is going to do,” Struve says confidently. “He’s not going to bring me down; he’s going to come in, close the distance, and make it a brawl; try to land bombs. But when I keep my distance, I’m fine, and when he tries to close the distance, it’s going to be easier for me to take him down, because he needs to come in to hit me. I don’t need to chase him; I can already hit him from a mile away.

“He’s probably one of the hardest punchers in the UFC, but if you look at me, if I fight my fight the way I should, use the game plan we’ve laid out – use my reach, keep my distance – then those punches are no problem because he’s not touching me.

“That’s pretty simple for me, and it’s how I prepare for all my opponents. If I fight my own fight, I keep my distance, and don’t let them come close – even if they take me down, I’m fine on my back. They’re going to have to fight in my guard.”

In a division known for its knockout artists, the long and flexible Struve is just as comfortable fighting off his back as he is standing and striking. Of his 29 career wins, 16 have come by way of submission, including four of his nine UFC victories. It’s another weapon in his arsenal, and another way that the always-entertaining Struve can finish a fight, something he’s done in all but one of his Octagon victories.

“It still bothers me that I have a decision,” laughs Struve, who came away with a majority draw when he went to the scorecards with veteran Paul Buentello at UFC 107. “It’s annoying. I took it on short notice, so I’m going to use that as an excuse.”

Between the two of them, Hunt and Struve aren’t accustomed to seeing the scorecards. That shared penchant for finishing fights and delivering entertaining action inside the cage is one of the reasons so many people are looking forward to Saturday’s contest, Struve included.

“If you look at our records, you don’t expect a decision. I don’t expect a decision. I trained really hard for this fight; I worked on a bunch of new stuff, and I can’t wait to show it. I can’t wait to show the crowd in Japan and the entire MMA world that I truly am one of the best heavyweights in the world.”

Four years ago, Stefan Struve stepped into the Octagon for the first time, lasting just 54 seconds opposite a man who would go on to become heavyweight champion. He could have easily faded into the ether, another in the line of one-and-done competitors or fighters who enjoyed a cup of coffee in the big show but never managed to stick.

Instead, he continued to work hard after every fight, gained experience, and filled out his seven-foot frame, all with an eye on the future, confident that eventually, he would put it all together.

He has.

“If I hit someone with my jab right now, they’re really going to feel it. If you compare that to when I entered the UFC when I was 21 years old, there wasn’t nearly as much power in my shots as there is now.

“I’m not a boy among men anymore, you know? Now I’m a 265-pound, seven-foot monster.”
