TUF 17 Fantasy Preview: Smith Jr. vs. Barnatt

The Ultimate Fighter: Team Jones vs. Team SonnenThe Ultimate Fighter: Jones vs. Sonnen is now in full swing with 14 fighters officially making the house, and the next round kicks off on Tuesday as Team Jones' Gilbert Smith Jr. takes on Team Sonnen's top pick Luke Barnatt.

In their opening fights, Gilbert Smith, who comes from a wrestling and grappling background, dispatched of Eric Wahlin with a powerful arm-triangle choke, while 6'6" Barnatt took care of Nicholas Kohring using his long reach but not without taking some damage along the way, including a noticeably bruised eye.

When the fight was announced, Barnatt mentioned that he hoped to fight a little later in the show due to the bumps and bruises he obtained in the opening bout, but he has no problem being the one with the target on his back as Team Sonnen's No. 1 selection.

While mixed martial arts really is a combination of every form of battle possible, this match-up in a lot of ways comes down to Smith's wrestling and grappling against Barnatt's extreme reach and height advantage.

Even UFC President Dana White noted the huge difference in Barnatt's size compared to Smith, who stands just 5'9", giving up a whopping nine inches in height to British-born fighter Luke Barnatt.

"I don't know why Jon would pick a guy with such height and reach advantages," White said.

What Smith has going for him is a wealth of wrestling and ground experience, having won four fights by way of submission in his career. He's also worked a lot in the past with UFC middleweight Chris Camozzi, who possesses a dangerous stand-up game of his own and stands 6'3" so Smith has sparred with plenty of fighters bigger than him.

On the flipside, Luke Barnatt is a newcomer to MMA by all comparisons, having started training about three years ago with no previous work in martial arts, and looks like the fighter who will do everything in his power to keep this fight standing with his long reach and powerful jab.

Barnatt's ground game isn't suspect though because he's trained many long hours under UFC welterweight John Maguire, the master of Gypsy Jiu-Jitsu, and with the long legs at 6'6" tall, he could use those in a similar fashion to what 7-foot heavyweight Stefan Struve does to his opponents any time he's on his back.

Leading into this fight, Smith has a slight advantage because of his ground game and wrestling, which unfortunately Barnatt just hasn't had the time to master yet in his young stage of development in MMA, and he's coming in a little more beat up than his opponent. Look for Smith to target Barnatt's black eye if he's smart, because if an opponent's vision is even slightly impaired, he could be just a second slower seeing that crucial punch coming in at him.

Don't doubt however that Barnatt could give his opponent fits if Smith can't get inside in the opening moments and take this fight to the ground. It's a toss up fight, and though the odds seem slightly in Gilbert Smith's favor, Barnatt's scrappy attitude and exceedingly long reach could carry him to a win here.

Without further ado, let's take a look at how you all did:

CONFIDENCE GAME RESULTS

Harry Cooper (59 points)
defeated James Brown (45 points) to become the new MMA Torch Confidence Picks Champion. Unlike previous weeks, this one wasn't really close. After a good run at the title, the now former champion had an average day at the office. I'm sure he'll be back with a vengeance, very soon. Congrats to Harry, a well deserved win from a loyal and long time competitor. Well done, sir.

Next up for the reigning champion is Anthony Sinnott who came away with a very impressive 64 points, dropping only 2 points all night. Notable mentions for Joe Willams and Matt Page who both posted very credible scores; just not quite enough to earn them both a title shot.

Performer of the Night: Congrats to Harry Cooper for becoming a double champion. Like others before you (including me), greatness has been instantly thrust upon you.

Goat of the Night: I could be diplomatic and say it was a really tough fight card to pick from, but I won't. No excuses from you, Mr. Ben Heather. 31 points and a goose egg is shocking, really shocking!

Sandy Hook Case Exposed - the Discrepencies... a lot of them

I was staying away from this altogether but this video that was sent to me a couple of days ago from a professor friend of mine was too interesting to just ignore.. So interesting that I watched it twice.. I'm not into conspiracy theories and I'm not out to prove anything or change how you think but I do however question and challenge. I don't even have to ask that you watch this with an "open mind" because the discrepancies in the news reports, etc. will speak for themselves. There are a few longer versions of this on YouTube but this version will suffice.

UFC 156 title challenger Frankie Edgar: "Don't mistake my kindness for weakness"

EdgarFrankie_Wide_5.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"I don't think I have been in a fight where I have been the favorite. For me this is just what I'm used to. It's my normal role. I'm going to come here and I'm going to show up for a fight. There's never been a fight I haven't been prepared for and I haven't showed up for, and it's going to be no different come Feb. 2… I was always told growing up the loud mouth, the big mouth, is not the guy you have to worry about, you have to worry about the quiet guy. I guess that stuck with me. I will say this: don't mistake my kindness for weakness, because I definitely bring it every fight, and it's going to be no different on Feb. 2."

-Frankie Edgar talks to MMAWeekly.com about why he shouldn't be counted out against Jose Aldo at UFC 156.

Penick's Analysis: Despite some fantastic performances in the UFC, including several great title fights, Edgar's never gotten the respect he rightfully deserves. Not from all at least. He's got speed, he's got striking skills, he's a great wrestler, and he's a very active fighter. He is undeniably a challenge for Jose Aldo, and he'll be one of the toughest fights the Featherweight Champ has had under the Zuffa banner. Edgar is an unassuming figure in the sport, but he's one of its great talents, and were it not for some poor judging in August he may have remained Lightweight Champion. If he can do at 145 what he accomplished at 155, we'll have a new Featherweight Champion come Sunday morning.

The Latest Update On Maryse & Her Recovery Time

Maryse stated on her official website Saturday night that she has recovered from her abdominal hernia surgery on August 24.

“I met with my surgeon today and she said everything is perfect,” she wrote. “There’s a little bit of fluid inside by the incision and where the repairs were done, but its totally normal apparently. The scar healed really good and there is no infection. So the surgery was a total success. I’m sooooooo happy!!!”

The former WWE Divas Champion last competed on the July 25 episode of RAW. She was advertised to compete in the following week’s No. 1 Contender’s Diva Battle Royal, but bowed out after determining days earlier that she would undergoing surgery.

Eddie Alvarez says he didn't expect to win injunction, rails against "bulls*** lies" put forth by Bellator attorney

Eddie_Alvarez_wide_banner_12.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

On Friday, Eddie Alvarez attempted to gain an injunction against Bellator which would have allowed him to fight at UFC 159 this April. New Jersey Judge Jose Linares heard from both sides to determine whether or not to grant the injunction, and ultimately ruled that Alvarez's side hadn't reached their burden to grant the injunction, leaving the legal process to continue.

During the proceedings, the attorney present for Bellator made a couple of claims that didn't sit well with Alvarez, including representing to the court that Bellator had a pay-per-view fight with Michael Chandler ready and waiting for Alvarez. After the injunction didn't go his way, Alvarez decided to vent a little about Friday's proceedings, while respecting the judge's ultimate decision. Here's Alvarez in his own words:

Penick's Analysis: Alvarez might well be right that a trial may go much differently, and if Bellator has to try to sell their arguments about pay-per-view and Spike TV being equal to Fox in front of a jury, that may not go too well. I'm glad Alvarez is trying to stay positive through a trying experience, and one can only hope this case can be brought before a jury and sorted out much sooner than later.

Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson to meet Amir Sadollah Memorial Day weekend

http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc/2013/...al-day-weekend

Memorial Day might seem years away if you're caught in the current cold snap plaguing much of the country. But the first hints at what's in store for the UFC's annual late-May card are coming to light.

Sources told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani on Friday that Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson will face Amir Sadollah in a welterweight battle on Sat., May 25. While a venue for the unnamed event has yet to be determined, the UFC traditionally holds Memorial Day weekend cards in Las Vegas.

Thompson, a 29-year-old native of Simpsonville, S.C., made a memorable debut at UFC 143 as he finished Dan Stittgen with a devastating head kick. Thompson lost his most recent fight, a decision to Matt Brown at UFC 145, which dropped him to 6-1.

Sadollah (6-4), meanwhile, won TUF 7 despite coming into the reality show without a pro fight. He's won three of his past five bouts, but like Thompson, he's also coming off a loss, a unanimous decision against Dan Hardy in September.

Jon Fitch: Right Here, Right Now

UFC welterweight Jon FitchIf Jon Fitch didn’t already have a signature walkout song – “Rusty Cage” by Johnny Cash – the perennial welterweight contender could stride to the Octagon this weekend to the sounds of ‘90s one-hit wonder Jesus Jones.

“Right Here, Right Now” is the best way to describe Fitch’s focus heading into his intriguing UFC 156 main card pairing with Demian Maia this weekend.

After years of trying to figure out what it would take to get back to a welterweight title shot and attempting to chart a course for the future in his head, the perennial contender has chosen to simplify his thinking.

Sort of.

“I don’t believe in time; I don’t think time exists,” began Fitch, who put an end to a two-fight winless streak back in October with an entertaining unanimous decision win over Brazilian prospect Erick Silva. “(Time is) a man-made creation, and all it really is is the measurement of objects passing through space. Depending on what field of that you’re from, space is either ever-expanding or ever-contracting, so the objects in space that we’re measuring are never in the same place twice, so how can something strict like time exist if those things and those measurements are never the same?

“I joke around and tell people that I have my own scale for age also. I say that I’m turning 25 this year,” continued the 27-4-1 welterweight, who turns 35 at the end of February according to conventional thinking. “I believe that once you hit 30, you should be allowed to count backwards again until you hit 21. Then you have your second 21st birthday, and then you count forward again until you hit 40. From there I haven’t decided if I want to count backwards again to 30, and have a second 30th birthday or if I’ll just continue going forward.”

His laugh breaks the awkward silence that comes when the person who is supposed to be leading the discussion has no idea what to say next.

“The other aspect is living in the moment. Focusing on what’s in front of you right now is the best thing for you. If you start thinking too far into the future, people start putting limits on themselves that way. `In three years I’ll be this old, and that’s too old to make a run for this or do that’ because of these made up rules and regulations people follow that have been passed down from another generation or their peers or whatever. I don’t believe in that. I believe in creating your own reality around you how you see fit.”

The cerebral competitor adopted his new mindset after the roughest patch in his six-year UFC career, and a period of financial uncertainty.

After battling to an unsatisfying draw with BJ Penn at UFC 127, Fitch was forced to the sidelines with a shoulder injury. He returned at UFC 141 in December, and was promptly knocked out by surging contender Johny Hendricks in just 12 seconds, the first time he’d gone without a victory in consecutive bouts since the fourth and fifth fights of his career.

He was dealing with lingering injuries heading into the Hendricks fight, had to pull out of a planned fight with Aaron Simpson in the summer after suffering a knee injury during training camp, and felt the financial strain that comes with living in California and not fighting frequently enough.

In advance of his bout with Silva at UFC 153, Fitch talked about his need to open up a little more, and give the fans a more entertaining show, admitting that a loss would likely mean it was time to get “a real job” in order to deal with the fiduciary challenges he was facing.

What resulted was one of the most entertaining back-and-forth battles of the year, with Fitch coming away with a unanimous decision win, and the pair earning Fight of the Night honors.

“I think the biggest thing was just focus; eliminating too many thoughts and too many concerns about what was taking place in the moment,” said Fitch of the changes he made in advance of sharing the cage with Silva in Rio de Janeiro back in October. “Whether it was that one individual fight, that one individual training camp, or that one individual day of training – you can’t start thinking about what is this next fight going to bring me? What’s going to happen after this? Who am I going to fight next? All those things, I think I had too much going on in my mind to be really focused on being myself, and the best version of me that I could be for the fight.

“I didn’t really change much about my style or whatever, I think I just gave myself more focus for the individual fight, and that allowed me to be the best me that I could for that fight. I think focus brings another level of performance out of me, and I don’t think that next level of performance that I’m currently operating at will be something that people will be dissatisfied with.”

That is music to the ears of fans that are eagerly anticipating his showdown with Maia on Saturday.

After straying from his grappling base and seemingly plateauing at middleweight, Maia has been rejuvenated since moving down to the welterweight division, following up his awkward debut win over Dong Hyun Kim with an emphatic first-round submission victory over Rick Story on the same UFC 153 fight card that featured Fitch’s tussle with Silva.

Running through Story established Maia as a dangerous addition to the welterweight ranks, and a man some might choose to avoid, but not Fitch. He welcomes the opportunity to step into the Octagon with the decorated Brazilian grappler, and looks forward to the challenges that come with this matchup.

“I get excited for challenges like this, and this is definitely a big challenge,” offered Fitch of his impending meeting with Maia. “He’s a very dangerous opponent in areas where I’m strong, so it’s going to be a very fun test. He’s definitely very tricky on the ground; he’s got a slow, methodical ground game that is very smooth. He’s able to transition very smoothly into submissions and his control positions. He’s not super-vicious with ground-and-pound; he may grind and control you into the submission, but he may not do a lot of damage along the way.”

In addition to simply being one of the best grapplers in MMA, Fitch believes part of Maia’s success since dropping to welterweight has come as a result of his size. The six-foot tall Brazilian has long limbs, which allows him to do things on the ground that opponents might not be expecting.

Fortunately for Fitch, he’s got someone with similar attributes helping him prepare daily in San Jose.

“He still has a lot of reach, which helps out with striking quite a bit, but it also allows you to have a different type of leverage when you’re grappling. Tall guys, long guys, they have a different type of leverage when you’re grappling with them.

“We have 185-pound champ Luke Rockhold, and he’s one of those guys who is a great example of that. He might not have the exact same base jiu-jitsu as some other people, but because of his length, he’s able to do some things that other people could never do, and I couldn’t do. Because of that, they’re able to hit submissions in different places that you wouldn’t expect, and their control is different in different ways.”

A talented grappler in his own right, Fitch showed off his defensive abilities on the ground against Silva, fending off a rear naked choke attempt for a large portion of the second round. He’s been called “unchokeable” for his ability to avoid getting caught, but while he appreciates the accolade, he’s not at all interested in putting the title to the test in the cage with Maia this weekend.

“That’s something I would rather not test,” he laughed. “Maybe someday if he would like to train together maybe I could try that out, but I would prefer to keep him as far away from my back as possible. That’s kind of a bad place to have Demian Maia.”

As much as he’s looking forward to the challenge of facing Maia this weekend, more than anything, Fitch is just happy to returning to the cage is quick succession. After enduring two of the most challenging years of his career, the soon-to-be 35-year-old – or 25-year-old by his count – just wants the chance to be active and productive in 2013.

“Getting the chance to fight regularly is pretty nice; it’s something you take for granted when you’re fighting three times a year. I’m super-excited to start off this year with a fight in February, and hopefully I’ll be able to crank out quite a few this year.”

TUF 17 Weekly Recap - Episode 2

We open our first regular episode with the guys arriving at the house after the elimination bouts. Bubba McDaniel feels like a kid again, Luke Barnatt appreciates the upgrade from his budget lifestyle and Gilbert Smith is simply awestruck.

While most of the crew is just excited to be in a fancy house, Josh Samman is worried about the impending fight between Gilbert Smith and Luke Barnatt. He doesn’t believe it was a smart pick and seriously questions Gilbert’s cardio. Bubba agrees that Smith’s endurance seems to be lacking. While teammates sniping each other is nothing new, even Team Jones’ coaches have their doubts. They convene a little coaching panel and echo many of the sentiments Josh and others hold.

As for Gilbert himself, he feels that there is a lack of positive affirmation (man, if only he knew what they really thought!) and doesn’t appreciate all the criticism. It appears that the pressure of the situation is starting to get to him. Teammate Adam Cella thinks that Gilbert is mentally breaking down. So we're off to a good start.

In the Gym

Things are a bit more positive in the world of Team Sonnen side. We cut to their training session and Chael introduces us to his coaching staff. He also informs us that he’s going to be participating in every workout his team goes through. He’s doing this so he can properly understand how the guys feel physically and mentally and figures the best way is to do it himself. Jimmy Quinlan says that the team, “is vibing very well.”

While camaraderie seems to be growing on Team Sonnen, Team Jones is already hitting the skids. As Gilbert leaves the room to check his weight, Bubba tells the assistant coaches that Gilbert is a wreck and doubts he’ll be able to perform in the Octagon. When Gil returns, his teammates confront him.

Considering past TUF outbursts, you might expect Gilbert’s reaction to include bunch of swearing and yelling, “Let me bang, bro!” but that does not occur. Instead, he responds with, “I’m not the one calling the shots" -- not exactly the most convincing of denials. As the coaches listen outside the door, Jon Jones decides to walk in and take charge. He tells Gilbert that he believes in him, knows he can win this fight and he should ignore all the other noise.

Team Jones finally gets down to training. Coach Jones trains Gilbert to use his big overhand left punch to catch the taller Barnatt. As Gil starts getting in the groove and moving, a few teammates start to believe in him. Both Clint Hester and Adam Cella start to envision Gil beating Luke.

Back at the house, Chael Sonnen decides to stop by and say hello. While he may act as if he's merely popping in for a spot of tea, Chael (shockingly) has ulterior motives. He pulls Uriah Hall aside and lets him know that his biggest priority as a coach is getting Hall on to the next round. Looks like Dana and Chael both have a soft spot for Mr. Hall.

Back at Team Sonnen training, we learn a little more about #1 pick Luke Barnatt. Born to a Jehovah’s Witness mother and “hippie” father, he has family dynamics that make Honey Boo Boo’s look like a Norman Rockwell painting. Coach Sonnen doesn’t appear to be too worried about Gilbert Smith negating the 6’6” Englishman’s reach.

Meanwhile, Dana White hears about the Team Jones controversy and agrees with them. He has no idea why Jon Jones would choose this matchup. With everyone (save Jon Jones) doubting him, can Gilbert pull it off?

Fight Time

Round one starts off with a groin shot. Once that uncomfortableness is out of the way, the fighters get down to business. Gilbert follows his training and uses that big overhand left to  transition to a takedown attempt. He pushes Luke against the cage and then scores a single-leg. Luke immediately works his way back to his feet and scores a trip takedown of his own. Both fighters get back to their feet and clinch against the fence. Luke tries to work his knees, but Gilbert grabs one and forces him to the ground. Unable to hold him down, both fighters break up and move to the center of the cage with about 1:50 left. Gilbert quickly shoots in, but Luke winds up on top. Luke takes his back, but Gilbert reverses, scrambles and both are back against the cage with less than a minute left. After an ugly jump knee attempt from Barnatt, Gilbert closes the distance, but the round ends.

Gilbert grabs another single-leg attempt as the second round begins, but the two wind up pressed against the fence. Luke tries to scramble and winds up on his back, but Gilbert fails to hold him down. The two return to their feet and Luke answers with another outside trip takedown. He’s able to score a few punches and short elbows before they’re back standing. Gilbert tries to throw some haymakers, but his energy is gone. Remember Luke’s ugly jump knee from round one? He tries it again, and this time it lands perfectly as Gilbert rushes in for the takedown. Barnatt catches Gilbert flush and Luke scores a 2nd-round KO, Vick vs. Cruickshank-style.

Coach Jones is now eating all those nice words he mustered up for Smith. He criticizes him for letting Luke dictate the pace and adds, “Gilbert lost the fight before he even got there.” The light heavyweight champ also tests out a new T-shirt slogan when he tells his team that they have to be, “pissed off for greatness.” Josh Samman gives us the usual, “I told you so,” while Bubba McDaniel is a man of action -- not content to let Team Sonnen decide his fate, he calls out Kevin Casey in the gym after the fight, hopefully goading him into a fight next week.

It doesn’t work, and Chael announces that next weeks match will pit teacher’s pet Uriah Hall against potential victim Adam Cella. Hall tries to give some pro forma “anything can happen in a fight,” but he doesn’t seem too worried.

The show closes with a sneak peek into next week’s action, which promises one of the craziest finishes in TUF history. Does Adam Cella shock the world? Can Team Jones find some continuity? Will Mrs. Barnatt usurp June Shannon for reality TV gold? Make your predictions in the TUF Fantasy tournament and then find out next week on The Ultimate Fighter!

Overnight ratings for UFC on Fox 6 up from December event in key demo, average viewers

UFC_on_Fox_6_poster_7.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The UFC's 2013 schedule on Fox started strong, seeing an increase in viewership from December's UFC on Fox 5 card. According to TVByTheNumbers.com, overnight ratings for Saturday's Fox broadcast show an average of 3.76 million viewers, up from the overnight 3.41 for UFC on Fox 5.

Additionally, the UFC broadcast garnered an increase in the key adults 18-49 demographic, drawing a 1.8, up from UFC on Fox 5's 1.6. Peak numbers and west coast viewership will come later this week. December's event ultimately averaged 4.4 million viewers, with the main event (running over) drew an average of 5.7 million viewers.

Saturday's broadcast - headlined by a Flyweight Championship bout between Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson, along with Rampage Jackson's final UFC bout - is on pace to out-draw that card, and could ultimately best last January's UFC on Fox 2 event as the second highest rating they've drawn on the network.

Penick's Analysis: This is a great number for the UFC. There was no telling how weel the flyweights might draw on Fox, or whether people would be more inclined to tune in for Rampage, and we'll see if we get quarterly breakdowns where the viewership was at. Regardless, this is a fantastic number, and the UFC gaining viewers from event to event on Fox is a positive step forward. With another big event in April, they could continue gaining traction and will hopefully draw another significant number. As it stands, they destroyed the competition in their key demos, and that's exactly what they expect to do right now.
