Yancy Medeiros (9-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will drop two weight classes when he meets fellow lightweight Rustam Khabilov (15-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in March at UFC 159.
UFC officials today announced the bout.
UFC 159 takes place April 27 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The main card, including a headliner between light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen, airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.
Khabilov vs. Medeiros likely will be part of the prelims.
Khabilov, who trains with top camps such as Team Jackson-Winkeljohn and American Kickboxing Academy, recently made a splash in his promotional debut with a suplex that set up a knockout victory over Vinc Pichel at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale in December. It marked the Russian's fourth straight win and just the third knockout of his six-year career.
Medeiros, meanwhile, makes his UFC debut following a two-fight stint in Strikeforce, where he picked up wins over middleweights Raul Castillo and Gareth Joseph. However, the Hawaiian hasn't competed professionally in nearly three years and now makes his octagon debut in a much lighter weight class.
The current UFC 159 lineup includes:
Champ Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen - for light-heavyweight title
Alan Belcher vs. Michael Bisping
Phil Davis vs. Vinny Magalhaes
Pat Healy vs. Jim Miller
Cheick Kongo vs. Roy Nelson
Nick Catone vs. James Head
Al Iaquinta vs. Joe Proctor
Rustam Khabilov vs. Yancy Medeiros
