The following guest editorial was sent in to MMATorch by reader Ray Hunter:
Over the past few years, I've observed, read, and sensed a steadily growing frustration with the current UFC Welterweight Champ Georges St-Pierre. That frustration is predominantly carried by his peers and competition, secondly, and maybe equally, by journalists and MMA fans. Now, I'm not the biggest fan of GSP, but I think - for some strange reason I can't put my finger on - he is unfairly treated. I'll try to explain what I see.
Georges is a geek. He's a geek who would kick my ass, but he's still a geek. I think this confuses people in MMA. Our MMA world has a fragile ego with a cornucopia/abundance of insecurities. I'm not just talking about the fighters. So, it's hard for people to get their head's around the idea of this guy being a dominant alpha male amongst the toughest men on the planet. On top of that, he sounds like he's got an air bubble caught in his throat. I can't listen to him speak without swallowing repeatedly. Imagine for a moment that GSP sounded and spoke like Clint Eastwood, Bane or even Barack Obama. Instant cred. He's not going to be in the movies because of his voice.
It must be incredibly humiliating to be thrashed soundly by a man like GSP (If you are insecure). To be considered one of the elite 170 pounders of the fighting world, yet have no answer to the man-handling you endure in front of millions? Who wouldn't be frustrated, crushed, embarrassed. I don't know how many fighters I've heard complain about GSP's "smothering style." What are we here for? I'm here to watch someone with talent in multiple disciplines try to impose his will over others. You can see it in fighter's eyes and hear it in their voices... they just can't understand how this guy can beat them. They can't swallow it; it's a really bitter pill.
Look, if you want to beat GSP, go out and do it. If he tries to take you down, stop him. If you don't like him passing your guard, don't let him do it. If you don't like him punching you in the face, move your head out of the way. GSP pushes the pace, he hardly moves backward, he is constantly trying to improve his position. What he does NOT do is lay on top of people, or dance away from the fight. I've heard people say he's not a finisher and doesn't do damage. What?! Look at the after photos of his opponents. Look at the faces of Jon Fitch, B.J. Penn, Josh Koscheck, Carlos Condit. Ask them if they were feeling wonderful after five rounds.
I know that we are never going to hear a fighter say “GSP sucks because he won't let me win and that's not fair," but that's what I hear every time I listen to the Josh Koscheck's of the world. Just shut up and beat him then. Stop whining about his style, stop getting beaten down. If you can't stand up, be a man and admit the skill and dominance of GSP, then you're an insecure, tired dick head.
If GSP put on Bane's mask and spoke in that tone and cadence, people would have a different opinion of his fighting style and skill set.
