Former UFC featherweight No. 1 contender Chad Mendes will make a quick turnaround after his knockout victory over Yaotzin Meza at UFC on FX 6 as "Money" is reportedly scheduled to take on Armenian judoka Manny Gamburyan at UFC 157 on Feb. 23, 2013.
A featherweight bout between former division number one contender Chad Mendes and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season five runner-up Manny Gamburyan has reportedly been added to UFC 157 for the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Feb. 23, 2013.
Both men are coming off recent victories; Mendes over Yaotzin Meza at UFC on FX 6 last weekend (Dec. 14, 2012) and Gamburyan over Michihiro Omigawa at UFC on Fox 4 back in August.
Grant Gordon of the Glendale News-Press first reported news of the bout; however, UFC officials have yet to confirm the featherweight match up.
Mendes (13-1) is coming off back-to-back first-round knockout victories, most recently over Meza, who he finished in the first round in Australia. "Money" currently holds an 8-1 record under the ZUFFA banner (UFC and WEC) with the lone defeat coming to UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 142 last January.
After unsuccessfully challenging "Junior" for the title, Mendes will take on an unranked opponent for a third consecutive fight.
Gamburyan (12-7) only competed once in 2012, earning a unanimous decision over Omigawa. Prior to the victory, "The Anvil" suffered three consecutive defeats at the hands of Diego Nunes, Tyson Griffin and Jose Aldo.
Over the course of his nearly 14-year MMA career, the 31-year-old has finished eight of his 12 opponents; including notable victories over former WEC champion Mike Brown and Leonard Garcia.
It is unknown at this time if Mendes vs. Gamburyan will take place on the pay-per-view (PPV) portion of the card, or the preliminary card, which is expected to air on FX and Facebook.
UFC 157: "Rousey vs. Carmouche" is headlined by the first ever UFC women's bantamweight championship bout as Ronda Rousey attempts to defend her UFC title for the first time against Liz Carmouche. Also announced for the card is a light heavyweight contender bout of Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida and a bantamweight rematch between Urijah Faber and Ivan Menjivar.
