THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER 17 REPORT 3/26: Penick's live blog of Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen Ep. 10

TUF_17_wide_image_18.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

The Ultimate Fighter 17 moves on to the quarterfinals tonight with an all new episode on FX, as the first two of the four fights this round will take place. Things are picking up as the show heads into the home stretch, with the Finale event just two and a half weeks away. Join me right here tonight for another running thoughts blog as the broadcast takes place beginning at 9PM ET!

-Bubba McDaniel isn't thrilled with the quarterfinal draw he got, and he's mentally bothered by the image of Uriah Hall's KO over Adam Cella. That would stick with anyone, but it clearly weighed on McDaniel after the fight announcement.

-First quarterfinal we'll get will be between Kelvin Gastellum and Colin Hart. Gastellum doesn't think people believe he's got boxing. Jon Jones thinks Hart is "ok" everywhere, but "extraordinary" in his jiu jitsu.

-Hart admitted his last fight was kind of boring, and that he held his opponent down, so he feels he's got something to prove into this fight.

-Sonnen said he's not sure why Gastellum is pegged as a wrestler, as he sees him more as a brawler. Gastellum has confidence in his boxing.

-UFC Women's Champ Ronda Rousey joins a training session of Team Sonnen, following up on her word to do this after Gastellum won his fight over Bubba McDaniel. He said it was "awesome getting handled by her."

-This is why I'm interested in seeing Rousey as a coach in the next season. Now, whomever she coaches against? Probably not so much.

-Rousey gave a speech to Team Sonnen. She said fighting is about respect and respecting your opponent, but it's also about not respecting them at all, because they don't have a right to walk out of there with a win over you.

-Quick to the weigh-ins for the first fight. Clint Hester sees the fight hitting the third round. Zak Cummings sees the fight staying on the feet, and takes his teammate Gastellum in the bout. Sonnen says Gastellum never stops working. Jones expects Hart to pick up a submission off his back in the fight.

-Gastellum echoes the statements from Rousey, saying Hart "doesn't deserve to beat me."

FIGHT ONE: KELVIN GASTELLUM VS. COLIN HART

ROUND ONE: Gastellum landed an early left as Hart closed distance. They briefly clinched, but Gastellum backed out. They exchanged strikes and each landed in a wild flurry. Gastellum then knocked Hart down with a big combo, and he landed a vicious series of strikes on the ground and went out cold before getting knocked back to. Ouch.

Gastellum moves on to the semifinals with a first round TKO

-Hart congratulated Gastellum on the win and hoped he won the whole show.

-After break we're on to the training for the next fight. It's the first overall pick, Team Sonnen's Luke Barnatt, against the last pick of the season in Dylan Andrews. Sonnen said Andrews was misjudged, and he's not to be taken lightly, but he thinks the height and reach advantage for Barnatt is huge.

-Barnatt said he loved going to the ground despite being taken for a standup fighter, and he wants to break Andrews down before beating him on the ground.

-For Andrews, Team Jones wants him to make Barnatt "pay to be tall." Jones brought in his original Muay Thai coach, Stone Horse, for this season, and he said Andrews really clicked with him. Andrews talked up their relationship, and said they both got each other and that he saw Stone Horse as a father figure.

-Mike Tyson came in to watch this quarterfinal fight, and both Barnatt and Andrews were excited to have him their watching them compete.

-Barnatt called his home country of England a "horrible place," and said he felt he's sacrificed more than others. Andrews said he didn't want to settle for a "normal" life and instead wanted to be great at something.

-Andrews said the fight will end when Barnatt makes a mistake, and it's just a matter of time until that happens. Barnatt sees a tough fight coming, but he expects to win.

FIGHT TWO: LUKE BARNATT VS. DYLAN ANDREWS

-Side note: Forgot Barnatt is only 24. Looks much older than that.

ROUND ONE: Andrews came straight ahead and fired off some strikes, landing a decent combination before scoring a takedown. Barnatt was quick to work off his back, trying for a triangle and landing some elbows and strikes off his back. He worked up to his feet with an landed a couple knees. Andrews pulled off a nice takedown and worked to side control. Barnatt continued attacking from his back. Andrews defended well, and as Barnatt kicked him up he dropped back into guard. Barnatt landed some nice strikes off his back. Barnatt got up and Andrews went for a guillotine choke. He used it to roll Barnatt down, then transitioned to the back in a nice sequence. Barnatt tried to get up but Andrews kept him on the ground. Barnatt got out and to his feet. He landed a solid knee. He got in a a strike as well. Andrews scored another takedown into guard. He landed some strikes from the top, getting in a few elbows as well as punches. Barnatt tried to attack with the triangle again, but Andrews stayed out and rode out the round on top. Solid round, but Andrews takes it. Barnatt was winning off his back, but the last half was all Andrews.

ROUND TWO: Barnatt landed a few strikes early as Andrews came forward. Andrews fired back with a few hard strikes. He landed a big right hand. He got in another as he came in and clinched. Big power strikes there from Andrews. They battled in the clinch before Barnatt broke free. Andrew landed a couple more strikes as they clinched again. Barnatt landed a knee and regained position. He pulled off an excellent trip right to mount, but Andrews quickly got it to half guard, then tried to scramble. He then turned that into a takedown of his own. Huge sequence for him to get on top. Barnatt went for an omoplata, but Andrews got out. He tried to drop down with strikes but got stuffed. He passed to half guard. Barnatt kicked him off and got to his feet. Andrews landed a strike and clinched. Barnatt went for a kimura as Andrews took him down but couldn't' complete it. Andrews tried to go back to work from the top. Barnatt landed a nice forearm. Andrews stood up and passed briefly to side control. In a scramble he looked to take Barnatt's back. He grabbed a choke very high on Barnatt and Barnatt got out as the round ended. I'd imagine Andrews won the fight, but there could be a third round. And there is.

-Dana White was happy Barnatt got credit for his work from the bottom.

ROUND THREE: Andrews immediately pressed in with the clinch. They jockeyed for position and Barnatt fired off a few knees. Andrews tagged him with a right after they separated. He got in a left, and a few more punches behind it. He landed a nice body punch. and continued pressuring. Barnatt landed a knee, but Andrew fired back with a combo. Barnatt got his back standing, but Andrews got free and walked forward. Barnatt threw a jumping knee that was blocked. A very tired Andrews continued moving in and pressuring. He landed a huge flurry of punches against the cage. He finally knocked Barnatt down and landed a punch on the ground that forced Herb Dean to stop it. He was tired, but he sucked it up and finished that fight off in style. Very nice. That was a really nice finish from Andrews.

-Barnatt knew it was going to be a war, it was, and he ended up suffering his first loss. He got a pick-me-up from Tyson after the fight.

-Stone Horse told Andrews how proud he was after the fight, and Andrews reveled into the win.

Next week: The quarterfinals conclude with Josh Samman vs. Jimmy Quinlan and Uriah Hall vs. Bubba McDaniel.

Final Thoughts: Really solid fights tonight to put Gastellum and Andrews into the semifinals. I was especially impressed by that third round from Andrews. He was worn out from a grueling two rounds, but he kept the pressure on and was the better fighter in the third. He relied too much on his takedowns the first two rounds, not giving his striking enough credit, because that's where he was having the most success in that fight. I'm intrigued by both, and look forward to the other two quarterfinals next week.

BELLATOR 94
MARCH 2, 2013
LIVE FROM TAMPA, FL

FIGHT ONE: RONNIE MANN VS. RODRIGO LIMA (BANTAMWEIGHT)

- The winner of this match will earn their way into the next bantamweight tournament. That tournament is scheduled to run this summer.

ROUND ONE: Troy Waugh is the referee for this fight, which is Mann's debut at bantamweight. Mann lands a counter right to a Lima leg kick. Mann catches a leg kick and lands a nice one-two. Rainse and repeat. Lima then catches a Mann kick. Mann is very patient, standing rather still while Lima circles at a frenetic pace. Lima lands a lunging uppercut, but Mann responded well. Lima gets a flash knockdown with a left hand to the jaw. Mann gets back up but is being bullied by Lima. Mann finally gets some distance and regroups. Mann was hurt, but seems okay now. Lima definitely has the speed advantage tonight, even if he is a little too wild. Lima's throwing solid leg kicks. Mann throws a kick and Lima catches it and unloads. Lima lost his mouthpiece during the exchange. Mann gets a nice little flurry in. Waugh returns the mouthpiece at the first break. Lima's doing well in these exchanges, but he's leaving himself open to a straight punch if Mann can land one. 10-9 Lima

ROUND TWO: Lima had a 37-15 advantage in total strikes in round one. 45 seconds before a strike lands. Lima landed a left hook. Lima catches a body kick and sticks his left hand on Mann's nose.

My cable went out, returning during the commercial break. My secret is out. I'm at home, not there live.

ROUND THREE: Daniel Straus is shown sitting cageside. If he's lucky, he will be there for 3-5 years. Har dee har har. Jimmy smith and the viewers on the Bellator app gave Lima round 2, so I will also. Lima landing straight rights and leg kicks. Lima comes forward with wide hooks until Mann grabs Lima and puts him on the cage. Lima grabs Mann's head in a guillotine position and forces Mann to the mat. Lima's working hard for mount while keeping the front face lock. Side control. Sorry, make that half guard. A very wide half0guard. Lima's landing soft punches galore from the top. Mann looks like he's quit. The cut has killed his tank. Lima's doing just enough to keep the ref off of him. Of course, Herb Dean would have stood them up 3 minutes ago. Not much to write about here. Dd you know Ronnie Mann is English? And he's wearing white trunks. Mann escapes briefly and dives in with a lunging punch. Lima wraps his legs and gets an arm in triangle. Lima baited him in by staying on the ground when Mann escaped. Lima isn't going to finish him with this one, but he's got Mann stuck. He's just holding the position and taunting Mann as if he's the poor man's Nate Diaz. 10-9 Lima

WINNER: Rodrigo Lima by unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (**) What I saw I liked. Lima was faster and had a better tank. Mann's been overrated for years, so it's impossible to know how good Lima is from this performance.

FIGHT TWO: LUIS MELO VS. TREY HOUSTON (WELTERWEIGHT)

- The winner of this match will earn their way into the next welterweight tournament. Houston has never fought below middleweight. Melo has never fought on American soul. USA! USA!

- Melo is four inches shorter, but possesses a two inch reach advantage.

ROUND ONE: George Ortiz is the referee for this fight. Houston's announced nickname is "That Just Happened." Guess who I'm cheering for. Melo grabs a plumb and lands a few nice knees. Houston gets a body lock and drags Melo down. Full guard, with Houston on top. Houston gets out and backs off. Melo lands a huge left kick and Houston is down and down hard! Of course, it was to the stones, so this fight will resume sometime int he next 5 minutes. We're back after about a minute. wild exchange from both guys, ending with a high side kick by Houston. Melo takes Houston down and sits in guard. Melo postures up and lands some solid ground and pound before diving back into guard. Pass to side control. Houston rolls onto his side and gets half-guard. Melo is landing a good number of right hands, and is starting to go to work with the left. and some right hammerfists. Melo postures up and lands a thudding right hand, and Houston is bleeding now. Bridge of his nose is bleeding. Houston gets back up and presses Melo against the cage. Houston separates from Melo. Houston is stalking, but not landing a whole lot here. He gets a bodylock and drags Melo down, but falls backwards and Melo is on top in half0guard. Whoops! Houston does well to get to full guard. 10-9 Melo

ROUND TWO: Melo was very active in the first. I have doubts he can do that pace for ten more minutes. Houston lands a counter left, and Melo backs up. Houston lands several more strikes before Melo can retreat. Flash knockdown by Houston, I missed what the strike was. Houston looking for the rear naked choke, but he doesn't have hooks in and Melo wriggles out of the choke. Houston pounds away from half-guard before letting Melo stand. Nice shot by Melo, and Melo gets on top of Houston in open guard position. Melo with a blatant headbutt. Melo passes to side control and then north south, but the choke isn't there. Houston turtls and Melo lands a nice straight kick to the ribs before Houston rolls to his back. Houston isn't doing anything down here. Ortiz tells Houston he needs to defend himself, but Melo's not landing anything with finishing power. Melo's tapping away with short elbows. Houston has nothing off his back, so he rolls to all fours. Melo pounds away until Houston rolls and gets to his feet. For about two seconds. Back to the turtle position. 10-9, 20-18 Melo

ROUND THREE: Melo has outstruck Houston 121-50 through 2 rounds. Nice standing knee from Melo. Melo gets teh takedown, and is in half-guard with more than four minutes to go. Melo is peppering the ribs, and then going to the head. Ortiz is telling Houston to work or he's going to stop the fight. Houston bucks, Melo gets mount, arm-triangle, tap.

WINNER: Luis Melo by submission (arm-triangle choke) at 1:09 of round 3.

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (**) Nothing wrong with that fight, but it gets demoted a little due to Houston's impotence on his back. Melo's a solid veteran fighter, but has absolutely nothing for the top of the division.

_ Spike aired the prelim fight between Edson Berto and Bruno Carvalho. That was the best fight of the night. Berto with a huge right hand to knock Carvalho down. Carvalho with a triangle armbar. Berto gets out and finishes with a heel hook. Not back for 87 seconds of fighting!

- Twenty minutes of filler and commercials later...

- AUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

FIGHT THREE: DAVID RICKELS VS. SAAD AWAD (LIGHTWEIGHT TOURNEY FINALS)

ROUND ONE: Troy Waugh gives both fighters instructions, and we're ready to go. Awad takes the middle of the cage, with Rickels keeping his hands very high. Awad catches a front kick and lands a few nice punches before Rickels gets free. Nice exchange against the cage, with Rickels landing the last strike, which forced Awad to back out. Awad is keeping his hands at knee level. Nice double left by Awad. Rickels comes forward with leg kicks. Awad counters with a right. Awad catches a kick and gets a takedown off the fence. Rickels lands an elbow to the top of the head and gets warned. Top of the head strikes are illegal in Florida. Freaking Florida... Awad is trying to slide Rickels to the cage. 2 minutes left. Hammerfists from the top by Awad are nice Joe. Rickels gets to his feet but Awad gets his back and has a body lock. Knees from Awad to the thighs of Rickels are nice Joe. Awad with the takedown. Awad postures up and lands some nice hammerfists. Awad tries an axe kick, sucka. Awad backs off, but dives back in when Rickels sticks his head out. The round ends with Awad on top. 10-9 Awad

ROUND TWO: Awad grabs a kick but can't get the takedown. Awad pressures Rickels into the cage and gets a lateral drop takedown. Half-guard. Full guard now. Rickels explodes to his feet and gets a takedown of his own. Half-guard. Let's see what Awad has from his back now. Rickels working the body, and gets swept by Awad. Well played sir. Well played. Awad is in full guard, but it's better than being on your back. Rickels is very busy off his back, which keeps AWad from being able to unload. Awad gets a little distance, and gets caught in mission control for a moment. Back to guard, in the middle of the cage. Interesting chess match. Rickels is trying ot get to his hip, but Awad locks his hands behind Rickels' back which forces Rickels back down. Awad stands up and dives back in with a nie left. Back to full guard. Awad is just unable to pass. Rickels is looking for a triangle, but can't get past wrist control. Nice elbow from Awad. Rickels back to the feet. Both guys are winging wild punches here until they clinch. Rickels drops Awad at the bell. Awad is down, and this fight might be over. It IS over. BAD BAD AWFUL HORRIBLE $100,000 STOPPAGE! What in the hell just happened? Awad was on the canvas, then the bell rang. Awad rolled to his back. Waugh didn't call the fight, Awad took some breaths, then Waugh called it. That is just awful garbage.

WINNER: David Rickels by KO at 5:00 of round two.

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: Troy Waugh told the commentators between rounds that he decided Awad was out before he hit the mat, which is an ass-covering lie by an incompetent referee. Had he thought that, he would not have waited FIVE SECONDS TO MAKE THE CALL. Troy Waugh is the Troy Waugh of referees. Chandler is going to murder Rickels.

Upon two re-watches. Rickels landed a big punch. Awad was falling face first as the bell rang. He hit the canvas after the bell rang, but he landed on his arms. His head was never on the canvas, he was never out. After hitting the canvas, now in between rounds mind you, he rolled to his back and put his feet flat on the canvas with his knees up. He took a couple deep breaths, then Waugh walked over to him and stopped the fight. Troy Waugh committed grand larceny.

FIGHT FOUR: MIKHAIL ZAYATS VS. EMANUEL NEWTON (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TOURNEY FINALS)

ROUND ONE: George Ortiz is the referee for this fight. I'm still so pissed by the end of the last fight. Newton takes the middle of the cage, with his hands high and his chin tucked tight. Both fighters flicking jab feints early. Nice right drops Zayats briefly, but he gets back up before Newton can take advantage. More of a slip, really. Zayats with a nice right hand. Newton is looking for the killshot right hand. He's sitting back hard. Newton throws it but misses by half a foot. Zayats with 2 nice left hands, and a couple straight rights. Zayats with 2 more rights, but Newton counters and gets a takedown. Newton almost got caught in a triangle, but no harm done. Zayats is like a tornado on the bottom looking for a limb to snatch. Zayats gets to his feet, with Newton pressing him. Scramble, and Zayats reverses. Body lock for Newton, into a takedown, but Zayats reverses and grabs Newton's head. Newton rolls to top, and Zayats gives up the neck. Zayats trying to use the cage to stand. and gives up his back to Newton. Newton is softening up Zayats, thinking RNC. Not enough time to get it in though. Even round. 10-9 Newton

ROUND TWO: Zayats lands a nice body kick and gets Newton backpedaling. Newton regroups. Leg kick from Newton. And a side kick that lands hard to Zayats' gut. Newton misses a spinning back kiss by a foot. Zayats is bleeding near his right eye. Newton is throwing a lot of killshot right hooks, but hasn't come close to landing one yet. As hard as he is throwing them, he won't need 2. Newton slips on a spinning kick, but Zayats doesn't attack. Zayats lands a nice combination of punches, and spins out before Newton can counter. The action is slowing badly. Newton misses an axe kick. Zayats misses a spinning back fist. It might've grazed Newton. Nice 1-2 from Newton. Push kick by Newton. Zayats is very hard to hit because he's always moving side to side. Zayats sits back and lands a heavy right hand. Newton grabs a body lock and gets a takedown as the bell ring. Troy Waugh just ran in and stopped the fight. No, not really. 10-9 Zayats. 19-19

ROUND THREE: Newton gets underhooks and forces Newton into the cage. nice outside trip after 45 seconds, but Zayats got to his feet immediately and circled away. Nice right by Newton. Zayats starting to jab. Newton lands a stiff jab of his own. Newton drops Zayats with a huge right hand. Newton going for a rear naked choke, now a bulldog choke, can't get it, and Zayats is back up after dodging a spinning back fist from Newtwon. Zayats has a big mouse under his left eye now. Newton could've finished that had the cards landed just a little differently. 2 mintues left. Newton changing stances looking to spin, but Zayats backs out so Newton goes back to conventional. Spinning backfist from Newton after all, but there was nothing on it. Zayats is going to need to really pour it on. 75 seconds left. Zayats shoots and grabs a single. Stuffed. Zayats doesn't get it, clearly. Jab by Zayats. Newton responds with a kick to the body. Newton shoots a single and he gets the takedown. Zayats is looking for an armbar. he had it for about 2 seconds. 10-9, 29-28 Newton

WINNER: Emanuel Newton by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (**) Meh. I'm sorry, I don't care. Neither of these guys are top 20 LHWs, and I'm still pissed off about Troy Wuagh's bullshit. I'm going to bed. Insert Brock Lesnar speech here.

Darren Elkins nearly missed the call for his UFC on Fox 7 bout because of cell phone charges

For Americans visiting Canada, the cell phone charges can sometimes creep up on you. Your phone will work the same, but weeks later, you get a shocking cell phone bill. UFC featherweight Darren Elkins wasn't going to get hit with that massive phone bill during his trip to Montreal for UFC 158. He ignored phone calls.

[Also: Video blog shows the other side of UFC's Dana White]

Of course, that also meant he nearly missed his chance at filling in at UFC on Fox 7 after Clay Guida pulled out of his bout with Chad Mendes because of an injury.

"Up there (in Canada) I had my phone turned off," Elkins today told MMAjunkie.com Radio "You've got those ridiculous roaming charges and stuff."

His manager ran him down and broke the news of the potential fight. Elkins will face Mendes, the one-time featherweight contender, just a month after fighting Antonio Carvalho and winning with a controversial TKO. Elkins is on a five-fight win streak, so a win over Mendes could push him closer to a title shot.

It's the kind of fight that's definitely worth the roaming charges.

TUF 17's Uriah Hall: Ronda Rousey "kicked my ass" in guest Team Sonnen training session

TUF_17_wide_image_19.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

On Tuesday's episode of The Ultimate Fighter, UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey made an appearance to give Team Sonnen a day of judo training in the midst of their preparations. Given the built in storyline of Kelvin Gastellum earning that coaching session with a win over Bubba McDaniel, they showed Rousey in some grappling exchanges with him and only a few others.

Team Sonnen's Uriah Hall said this week he was happy they didn't show his session with the Women's Champ that day, because it wound up being quite the humbling experience.

"I said to myself, 'I can get out of this,'" Hall said in an interview with the New York Post about tangling with Rousey. "Then she caught me and I was like, 'Oh my God, this [expletive] is real.'

"You can't grab her and if you do grab her, you're [expletive]"

Hall's been somewhat of a polarizing figure during this 17th season of the program. He holds one of the biggest highlights in the show's history with his spinning heel kick knockout over Adam Cella, but he's rubbed teammates and members of Team Jones the wrong way through the season.

Still, he took his licks from Rousey in stride, and was jokingly happy his comeuppance wasn't put into the show.

"Thank God they didn't show that, because she totally kicked my ass," he said.

Penick's Analysis: Rousey's going to be a very beneficial coach for the fighters of season 18 who make it to her team. Her judo knowledge is vast, and in her brief appearances on past seasons of the show she's been able to pass some of that knowledge on to people in clear and impressive ways. Hall was another fighter who found out first hand just how effective she can be with her most dangerous weapon, and it was another good segment from a season which has had many.

Anarchist Jeff Monson gets on Russian TV and draws parallels of the US government and Nazism

http://middleeasy.com/index.php?opti...:organizations

A couple years ago when we interviewed Jeff Monson, his publicist gave me a call while I sat a Starbucks in Dallas, Texas -- waiting for the the press conference for Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum. She really liked the interview, except for one seemingly major thing: she wanted us to remove the mention of Jeff Monson taking psilocybin mushrooms. Her reasoning was simple. She believed kids would read that statement and not consider Jeff Monson their 'role model.'

I'm not even making this up.

She apparently didn't care about Jeff Monson advocating the need for everyone to be an anarchist, his controversial views about the Middle East, his anti-corporate stance, the need to not vote in elections, Monson's belief that communism is not that bad of a thing -- or even the time when he defecated in his pants during a match. In short, you guys should really read the interview. The only thing Jeff Monson's publicist wanted us to remove was a story of him taking shrooms, because she didn't want 'kids to be influenced.' She wanted me to censor a guy that has gone through his entire life banging against the need for any censorship in society. You could literally cut the irony with the tip of an iron.

Something tells me Jeff Monson's publicist failed to see this interview he did on Russia's RT channel, drawing parallels of the the US government and Nazism.

In 1989, the author along with several other paranormal researchers investigated a woman's claims that her small bungalow was haunted by two ghosts: the apparition of a corpse-like old man and a disembodied head that manifested in her attic. Before long, the researchers round themselves under attack by unknown forces culminating in the attempted hanging of photographer Jeff Wheatcraft. Besides documenting various poltergeist activities such as: human blood plasma, fairy lights and moving objects, the ghosthunters were vastly disturbed to find out that they the hunters are now the hunted!

Michael Bisping thinks Alan Belcher's "living in a dream world" into their UFC 159 matchup

BispingMichael_Wide_29.png

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

"He thinks I just throw wonky punches straight down the pipe and that he's a Muay Thai expert because he's been to Thailand. I've been to Thailand as well. Do you think I don't know how to do a flying knee? Do you think I don't know how to check leg kicks and all that type of stuff that you think you're gonna do? You're living in a dreamworld my friend. You wanna Thai box? Great. That's what I do best. Will I win against Alan Belcher? Absolutely 100 percent. Losing is not an option. I've come to far in my career for it all to go wrong now. I ain't going away. I want to be world champion and I'm not giving up and I need redemption for my last fight and that starts on April 27 when I beat Alan Belcher."

-Michael Bisping talks to UFC.com about his UFC 159 matchup against Alan Belcher (transcribed by MMAMania.com).

Penick's Analysis: Bisping's capable of more diverse striking than what people often give him credit for, but we'll see just how the differing styles of the two play out come April 27. I wouldn't be surprised if Belcher went for a more grappling-centric gameplan, nor would I be surprised to see the two of them toe to toe for as long as they're both standing. There's been a lot talking between the two, and it probably won't stop until the fight's finished.

Jon Fitch vs. Josh Burkman set to headline World Series of Fighting 3 in June

Jon_Fitch_art_wide_12.jpg

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

On June 14 in Las Vegas, perennial top welterweight Jon Fitch will fight outside of the Octagon for the first time in eight years.

According to a report from MMAFighting.com, Fitch's first fight for World Series of Fighting is set, as he'll take on Josh Burkman in the main event of WSOF 3.

The fight is a rematch of an April 2006 bout, which Fitch won by submission at UFC Fight Night 4 on Spike TV. Fitch was released from the UFC last month after a loss to Demian Maia, a release which caught the MMA world by surprise given his longtime top ten standing.

But he'll attempt to start fresh in the WSOF, beginning with Burkman, who has won two fights already in the organization. The former UFC competitor has won four straight fights, and is 7-1 overall in the eight fights since his own release from the UFC.

Though it will headline the WSOF 3 card, the bout will not be for a Championship in the organization, as the MMAFighting.com report confirmed it will be a non-title fight. The card will air live on the NBC Sports Network, the second event in 2013 as part of a multi-year deal with the network.

Lentz in for Gamburyan in Santa Catarina

Just days after being medically cleared from a previous injury and agreeing to fight at UFC on FX 8, featherweight Manny Gamburyan has again suffered an injury during training and been forced off of the card. Nik Lentz will now face Hacran Dias at the May 18 event in a showdown between two talented grappling specialists.

Santa Catarina Scores Solid Lighter-Weight Names

updated March 20

Four more bouts for UFC on FX 8 were confirmed at a press conference today in Brazil, all of them featuring prospects from Brazil's talent-rich lighter weight classes.

Lightweight Lucas Martins -- whose only loss came in January when he stepped in on short notice to face fearsome Edson Barboza -- will return to the Octagon May 18, taking on TUF Live alum Jeremy Larsen.

Veteran featherweights Manvel Gamburyan and Rio's 21-1 Hacran Dias have both recovered from injuries sustained in their recent training camps and are now set to face one another at the Santa Catarina event.

Now settled at bantamweight, Yuri Alcantara is a legitimate threat to absolutely anyone, while TUF Brasil alum Marcos Vinicius will be looking to improve his incredible finishing rate.

Finally, Brazil's top flyweight Jussier Formiga takes on 7th-ranked Chris Cariaso in the Octagon inside Arena Jaraguá.

UFC Returns to Brazil for Rockhold vs. Belfort

updated March 6

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will return to Brazil for the second time in 2013 on May 18, as the Jaragua Arena in Jaragua do Sul, Santa Catarina, will host UFC on FX 8: Rockhold vs. Belfort. In the main event, MMA legend Vitor Belfort returns to the Octagon after his victory in January at UFC Sao Paulo, where he knocked out Michael Bisping. Belfort faces Luke Rockhold, the outgoing middleweight champion of Strikeforce, who rides a series of nine wins.

In the co-main event, former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo "Jacare" faces Cypriot Constantinos "Costa" Philippou.

Seven other fights have been confirmed for the event, all of them featuring Brazilian stars squaring off against competitors from around the world:

Cezar "Mutante" Ferreira vs. CB Dollaway - middleweight
Rafael dos Anjos vs. Evan Dunham - lightweight
Francisco "Massaranduba" Trinaldo vs Mike Rio - lightweight
Paulo Thiago vs. Lance Benoist - welterweight
John Lineker vs Azamat Gashimov - flyweight
Fabio Maldonado vs. Roger Hollet - light heavyweight
Gleison Tibau vs. John Cholish - lightweight

"This is the fourth Brazilian state that we have the joy of visiting and another great achievement for the UFC," said Grace Tourinho, spokesperson for UFC in Brazil. "Brazilian fans still have many good things to expect from us in 2013, including live events, the next season of The Ultimate Fighter Brasil and the opening of a UFC headquarters in the country."

"Fighting in Brazil is always very good, and I'm honored to fight in the third different state in my country," said Belfort, who will be looking to earn his fourth win in his home country.

UFC's Dan Hardy plans future training sessions with St-Pierre, targets spring return

After a four-fight skid that had him thinking about retirement, Dan Hardy's evolution is continuing in the midst of a two-fight resurgence.

The former UFC welterweight title challenger is coming off a stint at Montreal's Tristar Gym to help champion and former nemesis Georges St-Pierre prepare for common opponent Carlos Condit.

And recently, the Brit revealed he is planning to train in the future with St-Pierre and the Tristar crew.

Quebec commission responds to controversy surrounding UFC 158 weigh-ins

There's been some controversy brewing over the last week surrounding UFC 158 in Montreal earlier this month. A video surfaced from Diaz's camp from the day of the weigh-in, showing UFC VP Michael Mersch talking to Diaz's camp about a tweak in rules.

"Here, they're going to allow you and Georges to have an extra hour. Just in case somebody doesn't make it," Mersch said in the video (which has been removed multiple times from YouTube). "But the good news is, they don't count the decimal. If you're 170.2 it's 170. If it's 170.9. it's 170."

Members of Diaz's entourage asked why they hadn't been informed of that quirk from the Montreal commission earlier, and Mersch's response is what's caused the most reaction.

"It's just something to keep in mind. That's kind of an off the record type of thing," Mersch said. "But keep that in mind. As long as he's under 171, we should be good."

The Quebec commission has now commented on the matter, confirming the fact that they don't "count the decimal", and according to a report from MMAFighting.com, they haven't in the last five UFC events to run in the state.

"I wish to inform you that, during UFC 158, no contestants exceeded the weight determined in their contracts," Quebec commission representative Joyce Tremblay commented. "Currently, the Regie does take into consideration the maximum weight determined by contract when it carries out the weight-ins before a bout. However, our regulation on combat sports does not take decimals into account. Their consideration is a question of interpretation likely to be debated between the two parties under contract."

Penick's Analysis: The "off the record" comment is the biggest issue here. It seems like it's simply the way Montreal conducts their weigh-ins, even though that runs contrary to every other North American commission which requires on the dot weight or below for title fights. But if that was the case, it's something the competitors should be made aware of well ahead of time, not shortly before the weigh-in. It may be a case of that information coming to Mersch and him passing it on, but it certainly didn't come off well, and gives fuel to the conspiracy theorists in the MMA world.
